Angels drop opener in Baltimore 4-1

There were a lot of reasons for optimism going into this one. Mostly, the previous 7 times the Angels had faced Jordan Lyles. But, alas, these are the 2022 Angels.

Two Angels reached in the top of the first and things looked promising. Unfortunately they were stranded.

Chase Silseth worked quickly and effectively, throwing up a zero in the bottom half of the inning.

A great sight to see, Brandon Marsh stroked a nice single to center, stoke second, then advanced to third on the second inning. A Suzuki K and Villar bunt for an out kept Marsh from scoring.

In a city famous for crab cakes, it was all LOBster early on.

Baltimore got on the board first thanks to a solo shot by Adley Rutschman. 1-0 Orioles. Ryan Mountcastle added a second solo shot in the third to make it 2-0

2 more runs in the 5th were charged to Silseth but scored with Wantz on the mound. 4-0 after 5. These were the first two inherited runners Wantz has allowed to score this season.

The Angels finally got on the board in the 7th when the Plumber scored on a Suzuki sacrifice fly. 4-1 Orioles at the stretch.

And that was it for the Angels offense.

If you’re looking for a silver lining, Jose Marte looked good throwing 1 2/3rds innings of scoreless ball. His slider/cutter was nice. The Plumber hit, scored, and made the routine plays. Trout scorched two balls but has nothing to show for it.

The most impressive player in the game was Cedric Mullins. Dude straight covered sone ground.

We need to hire him yesterday. Our farm system is broken and drafting 20 relievers was not good.

Pandas pitchers are crashing back to earth. Bush and Kerry.

Kerry’s been crashing back for a while now. (although he only gave up 2 runs in 6 innings tonight) Ky Bush has been stellar except for his last 2 outings where he gave up 9 ER in his last 5-1/3. The good news is he’s still not walking anyone so maybe its a temporary dead arm thing? I’m excited to see him pitch in a couple of weeks in the All Stars futures game against the best young talent in the game.

You might want to check out some of the other 2021 drafted Panda pitchers as well. Mason Erla has been crushing it since his promotion to AA. He currently has a .92 WHIP, A 1.84 ERA and 7.0 SO/BB ratio. He has yet to give up a HR in 6 starts. And reliever Eric Torres has been lights out as the Trash Pandas closer this year . In 22 games he has 1.27 ERA , A .81 WHIP while averaging 14 K’s/9 Luke Murphy aint doing too bad either. The former Vandy closer has a 2.97 ERA, A 1.02 WHIP while averaging 10.8 K’s/9

And last but not least, the 2021 draftees aren’t the only successful pitchers on the Trash Panda staff. As you may have read in todays news crash, 2019 draftee Coleman Crow was just named Southern League pitcher of the month where in 4 starts in June he was 3-0 27 innings 1.33 ERA .177 BAA

Not too shabby.

So what you’re saying is the farm is totally destitute and we will get nothing out of it, especially in the pitching department.

This is impossible. The Angels don’t have any development staff. The MiLB Pitching Coordinator is really just one of those jumbo Topps baseball cards from the 1980s… probably Mike Scott…. taped to a wall. The pitchers just talk to that. When they have the energy. Because they sleep on the wet cement floor of their cell and live off 500 calories of MixMeat a day. I am pretty sure I know this for a fact.

Yes, but he is cheating… breaking it down near the handle. Bo broke his at the meatiest portion of the bat and sometimes right over top of his huge melon!

Nice LOBster line.

Trout, Ohtani, Ward and Walsh were a combined 1-14. When that happens, lights out – game over.

Is Walsh and his 14 walks to 91ks one of our big 4? Wow guess so

You know what’s really weird is his overall splits aren’t even all that different this year.

Don’t know what you mean by his splits tbh but his slash line has gone from .277 .340 .509 for .850 ops to .247 .290 .435 for .725 ops and his strikeout to walk ratio has gone from about 4/1 to 6/1. Would love if he got back to last seasons form

What’s the fascination with Silseth? A 5.8 ERA and 1.5 WHIP is impressive for a beer league softball pitcher, but trotting this guy out in MLB games is just embarrassing. He has options, get him back to Rocket City on the next freight train.

I’ll buy his stock…..might be a few more years before it pays, but he was pitching in the CWS last year at this time. In my decades long scouting career 😃 of over 4,000 games (same amount as Lying Spencer), I like his mound Grit.

Unimportant musings..

The skanks are on pace to win 116. For us to win 116 we have to go undefeated from tonight. We’d have to finish 78-0.

I’m setting the low number for making the playoffs at 86 wins. We’d need to go 48-30. If we were good that would be possible.

Since we’ve just passed the halfway mark we can double the stats (approximately). Shohei would end with 15 or 16 Ws, 36 HRs, 103 RBIs. Trout with 45 or 46 HRs but to finish at .300 he’d have to hit about .340 the rest of the way.

So you’re saying we still have a chance to win 116!

We’d go 48-30 before trout ever hits .340 haha. Prob finish .281 36 hr 0 sb 185ks in 144 games

I know you love your stats. I also know you know statistics don’t really work that way in baseball. First half performance is rarely a predictor of 2nd half performance etc.

At this point I’ll give us a 50/50 shot at 25th (or worse) team in MLB, or coming close to 81 wins. Betting it will be one of these 2 outcomes.

He hasn’t hit .300 since 2018. That ship may have sailed.

They wasted those prime years. Former fat kid is now a .280 guy w/power who won’t be stealing bases much anymore.
