Postgame May 24, 2022

There is no Lagares. Still. this game appeared to be heading in the wrong direction in the middle innings on singles by Upton and Suarez and then a homer by Julio Rodriguez in the fourth. 3-0 Mariners.

Mike Trout hit a homer in the fourth to make it 3-1 Mariners.

Taylor Trammel drove in a fourth run in the sixth inning. 4-1 Seattle. Taylor Ward singled in the sixth and Mike Trout tripled him in. 4-2 Seattle. Ohtani grounded out but it scored Trout. 4-3 Mariners. Jared Walsh was hit by a pitch. One man on and still only one out except the Mariners challenged and Walsh ended up striking out. Max Stassi struck out. End of inning.

Andrew Wantz walked Upton. Andrew Wantz walked Frazier. I’m sure there’s some kind of plan here.

The Mariners loaded them up with two outs in the top of the eighth but didn’t do anything with it. Neither did the Angels.

In the ninth, the Mariners also did nothing. Stassi K. Duffy K. Angels lost.

Wanted to say something about Perry and the realities he faces.

He came into a system with really no farm and approximately $100 million committed to 3 players and then approximately another $50 million committed to other payroll.

Arte set the budget which gave him about $40 million to work with. Not a lot given all the holes. That’s what leads to players like Wade and Duffy.

Then $60 million in dead money with Upton and Rendon (neither of which were his doing). And also Fletcher’s injuries.

Loup has become terrible but this was a signing we all liked. Really unpredictable for him to become this bad.

The bottom line is Perry stepped into a bad situation with a bloated payroll, no farm to speak of, many holes on the roster, no depth within the organization and a severe budgetary restriction.

I think property judging his performance requires us to include these realities.

You summed it up perfectly. Without injuries at the start this Angels team was very good, the GM is no better than us at predicting who will go down as result of injuries. Trout and Wade have returned for injuries twice each. Rendon and Fletcher were unfortunate injuries for sure. Pitchers are even more difficult to predict, and we have had our share there. Blaming PTP is ridiculous. He has done the best job of the last 3 GM’s that the team has had. The amateur draft is around the corner, and it is always about luck. But PTP did well last season. As for having Duffy and Wade along with Rengifo and the others in the cast, Perry did well there too, with as little as he had in the budget. You may not like Squids hitting but it would have been worse if SS had been covered by Rengifo all this time. When we needed a SS many here thought that Moreno was going to spring for a big name and hold back the chances of signing a big name and then neither took place. Arte sets the ceiling every year and it is impossible to become the hero GM under his cap. So those that think it’s easy, let’s hear your ideas next month, otherwise quit complaining.

I know what you think of me, but regardless I’ll state my opinion.
Loup plus resigning Iglesias was the predictable absurd blunder risk that was made to put our efforts and resources into a bullpen rather than a good starting rotation including last year’s MLB draft. Money was the reason yet again

What! How many games did the Blowpen give away in the last 5 years? PTP rolled the dice and are starters are good this year. Lorenzen and Thor were great signing for fitting the budget. You have just flat out got 20-20 hindsight and are blinded by the light of what to do now. I hope you post you Ideal Angels draft before it happens. How about researching the teams that you think will be trading to stay in the hunt and what the Angels should do before the trading starts next month. We don’t even need pictures, just make your suggestions.

A 24-13 start. How the mighty have fallen.. to 4th place.

But.. were they really ever that mighty???

At this rate Angels will be sellers at the trade deadline.

And another wasted year which is bad for Trout’s case even though he signed the dotted line for that $425 Million contract so he shouldn’t be all that shocked..

I don’t vote as often as I should for the All Stars, but I voted today and was amazed, Ohtani was not leading in the DH voting. And Trout is behind Judge. Ward is hanging in though in the OF race. After that we are rather weak in the polls, as we should be. This is just not our year I guess, so I guess I’ll go check out the draft board and see if there is a good SS that we can get. 😂

JackFrost

Trout is indeed behind Judge, but it is hard to complain about that. If Mike finishes 2nd to him in the vote I’d have no problem. Whatever the case he’ll be a starter like always…

Hope Ward hangs in there. That would be very cool for him.

One arm, one pitcher, one man, we may never see this person throw a Perfect Game ever again, much less a No Hitter. I don’t believe guys with MA’s have changed the game by so much. BTW f*ck the MFNYY and the Cheating F*cking Asstros, they deserve to play each other and have bottom of the ninth blowpens and No Hitters. I might just dislike both of those teams, you think! Altuve is up there in the ranks of cheaters with Bonds, ARod, Ortiz, Rameriz, Palmiero, and IRod and Piazza.

Now that’s out of my system I can return to normal programming. GO ANGELS!

Your exactly why I’m here…
We always have to dislike some other more successful team than we are post 2009 ALCS because the abyss has been ever since the final out of that series. Worst farm system in MLB, just a never ending BS no excuse for having no pitching and defense every damm year. Meanwhile on the other side of town the other guys lost Trevor Bauer and Max Scherzer and haven’t missed a beat ( Tony Gonzolin and Tyler Anderson combined 17-0).

Looks like MacKinnon isn’t capable of switching positions, or the Angels wont because he’s not 5’8 140.
Isn’t it time to send down Marsh to AAA for a little refresher course?
Move Walsh to the OF and give Mac 1st base. Take a look for a week or 2 and see if his bat does anything to help this anemic offense. If he isn’t an auto out its an improvement .

Marsh is basically hitting .180 for the last month. He is our best defender and his glove will be missed. But they need to start looking at him striking out 3 times a night is hurting his development.

This may be blasphemy but what about trading for Conteras and platooning him at 1B w/ Walsh when vs lefties? Contreras is better vs lefties better OBP and significant power. It would put less stress on Stassi and buy time for Walsh to get better. Stassi could be a pricy back up, but Contreras is available and could fit many areas the Angels are of need or just upgrade. Walsh has potential gold glove but does make mistakes and his avg vs lefties is okay but power is soso, and OBP needs to get better.

With the talk of Trout having an all time HR record against the Mariners, I thought I would check out how he is doing in other categories (yes, I know how sad it is that I am focusing on Trout stats rather than our win/loss record).

Trout is now at 80.3 in all time bWAR – having passed Joe Dimaggio, Curt Shilling, Pete Rose, and Jeff Bagwell. (Soon up, legends that once wore an Angels uniform in Rod Carew and Nolan Ryan).

I also got to looking at other HOF categories for Trout, and of course is already a lock for the HOF with his stats – with one exception.

In ‘Hall of Fame Standards’ he is *only* at 43 (HOF is typically 50). This is because this metric factors in longevity and counting stats. So, I wonder, if there is anyone out there better at these types of calculations, that could help me guestimate when/how Trout might meet this final threshold?

I guess I have to ask myself: “Do we really have enough to make the playoffs this year?”

I think that we do.

We have a pretty good pitching staff 1 – 4.

Ward, Trout, Sho, Walsh….

Bullpen may come around (esp Loup, Tepera, Iggy…).

There are so many holes in the lineup, though. We’d have to play a stretch of amazing baseball where we start firing on all pistons to make up some ground to get into the playoffs.

I read the Halos have a 14.7% chance of making the playoffs.

This is better than 0%.

It’s on Perry to make the adjustments.

Nevin seems to be Joe Maddon Extra Light….

You need starting pitching, a SS, and the bullpen collapsed. That was supposed to be the strength of this team and it turned into diarrhea right before our eyes. There isn’t any manager in baseball living or dead that can turn this team into a winner……..NONE!!

Don’t forget 2B and 3B, we currently have utility players in those positions. We need more OF. Marsh is imploding, Adell can’t field, and the jury is basically out on Monte Harrison who hit in the low .200s in the minors before being called up.

Sorry, 2002Heaven, NONE is not the answer.

We’ve got 4 good starting pitchers and two studs in Sho and Sandy.

The bullpen can come back, it was good at the start of the year.

Sure the middle and bottom of the lineup suck. But with Trouty, Sho, Ward, and Marsh up top, there is still strength in the line-up

Senator_John_Blutarsky

For the Halos to make the playoffs Trout, Ohtani and Walsh need to be nails every game – AND the bullpen has to deliver in high leverage situations.

Those things haven’t happened consistently over the past 3+ seasons, “better coaching” isn’t going to make it happen now.

call it a conspiracy theory, but I’m thinking Adell is still in SLC to prevent the two most hyped Halos prospects since Brandon Wood from flaming out on the national stage.

rosstrade

Agreed. It’s unlikely. But, it can happen.

Bullpen is the key.

And, finding serviceable pieces to shore up the defense and provide some baserunners at the bottom of the line-up.

I’m with you Charles. Had the Angels had 1 more offense play, sure, but Seattle was atrocious w RISP so the game was a lot closer. Gave up too many flippin walks. They need OBP and another bat and some power. Back to your point, winnable game. It’s funny cause the beat writers outside of Blum finally realize there’s no threat after the top 4. This has been an issue since early May. Walsh hasn’t improved vs lefties and plate discipline, but it’s still not good enough even if he does. They need to also add a reliable bullpen arm. My pessimism is Angels need to beat bad teams and Perry needs to add to the team so they can catch up sooner vs later. Hes let this go on for over
1.5 month and the fill ins tell me he’s not even trying. Who’s confident with who’s being called up?

JackFrost

Yes, and right around that time we led all of MLB in .SLG and HR’s.

This is what a few key blown games can do for you, in a negative way. It started with the umps and the review offices in NJ screwing us on the Trout slide play at home in the Friday night home game against the Blue Jays.

We had the momentum and in fact were on the way to victory. If we go on and win that game as we should have it changes the whole Toronto series, and obviously what followed. There would have been no 14 game losing streak, no embarrasing Sunday loss in Philly and most likely we split or win that home series vs. Boston. It would have changed everything. Maddon would still be the manager.

And let me remind everyone that the ruling on the field was SAFE. There was surely not clear evidence to overule the field ruling and take an Angels run off the board. THAT one scandalous decision was the beginning of the end for us….

Some of the review calls going against this team are frustrating and head scratching, but they aren’t to blame for this offense falling off a cliff.

JackFrost

In the series I referenced the offense did not “fall off a cliff.” In fact, the Angels lost the last three games of that series (including the Friday night game with the review that screwed us) ALL by 1 RUN ! The scores were 4-3, 6-5, and 11-10. We scored plenty and all were tightly contested. The last two games also featured a series of highly questionable ball and strike calls..

So, in theory we could have taken 3 of 4 instead of being swept, had the umpiring not been decidedly slanted against us.

What is the point of trading? I mean, what would you trade Lorenzen for ?

He is making approx. $7 million this year. If he pitches more or less at the same level he has for the rest of 2022 he would be in line for a little raise. Maybe we should try to keep Lorenzen, offering a 2-3 yr deal ?

On the other hand, if one thinks Bachman would be ready for the rotation next year and you could flip Lorenzen for a decent middle infielder we could do that. I would probably trade him in a two for one with Quijada for Lux if that was possible, just because we desperately need to improve the offensive production of our middle infield.
