LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Return of Junk

June 20th brought the return of Junk, Janson Junk that is. Kenny Rosenberg was optioned to triple A as was Reid Detmers. Jimmy Herget went to the injured list. Fans traded souvenir balls in the outfield seats.

CBD companies may soon be able to advertise on MLB games and patches on jerseys. They just have to get certified that there is not too much THC in their product and get approval of the Commissioner’s office.

The Blue Jays hitting coach, Guillermo Martinez, brought out their lineup card on Tuesday and got himself ejected before the game even began.

Max Fried won his arbitration hearing against the Braves while the Marlins won their arbitration hearing against Jacob Stallings.

The Mets might soon get Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom back, but Tylor Megill will be out for a while. The Giants got Anthony DeSclafani back.

The Athletics designated infielder Matt Davidson for assignment.

The White Sox seem to be snake bit on the injury front, not literally but you know what I mean.

Thought one – will Arte be willing to increase payroll by approximately $45m (to around $235 million) per year to keep Ohtani?

Related to thought one – does losing the stadium deal make Arte’s increasing of payroll more or less likely.

Thought two – if the answer to one is ‘no’, the budget stays at approximately $190 million, then how possibly could the team afford Trout, Ohtani and Rendon?

Related to thought two – Trout and Rendon are essentially untradeable.

With that thought tree – I guess it all comes down to Arte as it always does.

Reply thought to thought one: Is $235M-117M=$118M for 5 starters our entire bullpen, 6 starting position players, our bench and the rest of the 40 man roster staff going to be enough to competitively field a team going forward? If $235M is not enough to effectively build a MLB roster so Arte should find someone who will spend this kind of money.

Jeff Fletcher had a great article in the OC Register looking at the overall team numbers. Its a great read if you can get behind enemy lines. Here’s the linky: https://www.ocregister.com/2022/06/23/whats-wrong-with-the-angels-a-look-inside-the-numbers/

One interesting excerpt which should not be as shocking as water is wet:

The bottom of the order has been a black holeThe Angels’ bottom four spots in the order have combined for a .549 OPS and a .296 slugging percentage, which are both the worst in the majors by a wide margin.
By contrast, the top five spots have an .820 OPS (2nd) and .476 slugging percentage (2nd).

So the bottom line is Perry gambled and lost big time on over a 1/3 of the starting line up. Unlike his predecessors that gambled more on starting pitching, our entire season hangs in the balance because of these rejects and retreads and not necessarily because of our pitching for once.

Performances from the past two nights are the reasons why it’s so hard to really quantify Ohtani’s value when it comes to giving him a new contract. Apparently, he added a full +1 WAR just based on the last two games alone.

Allegedly his baseline was the Max Scherzer contract. Is it only because it’s the largest contract right now? If the baseline is Scherzer, then does that mean that only covers the pitching part? How about the hitting part? How do you really value a player who pitches like Scherzer and who hits like Judge?

Oh, and it seems Ohtani can carry a team just fine. He did it last night, similar to how he carried the team against Boston on June 9 that finally ended the Angels’ nightmarish 14-game losing streak. He did it last night WITH a scrub lineup. It seems he’s at his best carrying the team when he’s both pitching and hitting, not only when he’s hitting.

Great comments.

Ohtani’s agent presented his contract extension hopes at 43 Mil – Scherzer money as someone else on the board called it.

Imagine if a team could get Ohtani for 43 Mil for only 5 – 6 years – this would be a huge bargain. The contract would end when Ohtani reaches 32 or 33 when he is still in his prime.

I don’t think the Sho is looking to be baseball’s highest paid player. What is more important to him is BASEBALL, baseball tradition, baseball lore, his legacy, playing baseball the right way and winning, and being honorable and humble in the process.

Shohei wants to be on a team that matches his values and aspirations. I think he’d take less money to be on the right team.

The reality is that there are probably teams out there who may pay more than 43 Mil and longer than 5 -6 years for the Sho. This puts a lot of pressure on the Angels with Rendon and Trout on the books.

I see Ohtani going to the Mets, or the Yankees, and playing for Buck S and returning to the man who got him on the Angels, Billy Eppler. The Mets would probably pay top dollar for him.

That would be a great deal for the team. And for a team like the Mets, Dodgers, or Yankees still allow them to build a quality 40 man roster.

But the math gets really bad here quickly.

Arte’s payroll limit: $190 million – $43 million for Ohtani – $38.5 million for Rendon – $371 million for Trout = $71.4 million for everybody else.

Of that $71.4 million, for the next two years Fletcher gets $6 million, Iglesias gets $16 million for 3 years so that gets us down to about $49 million to spread around the other 21 active players and round out the 40 man roster.

While I have no actual idea, that’s never stopped me from throwing out ideas before.

Idea #1: as Arte’s white whale is no longer in the net he sits on his cash waiting to see if he can still buy the property.

Idea #2: Arte realizes the stadium deal is years away and decides to spend some of the cash he’d set aside for the stadium deal.

Of the two, I’d greatly favor idea #1.

rosstrade

Exactly, Jeff, the numbers don’t work out.

However, as an Angels fan we can hope that one of two things happen:

1) Arte spends more. If his is going to market the Angels as an “LA” team, then it makes sense for him to spend on a par with the Dodgers.

2) Shohei takes less money. If Arte presents a plan to make the Angels more competitive and offers Shohei an incentive-laden contract, I can definitely see him taking less money.

Keeping The Sho is good for Arte Moreno and is good for Angels fans.

Frankly, I don’t think this will happen. So, your idea to trade him may be the Halos best option if/when it’s clear they have no chance at making the playoffs this year.

Trading Shohei to the Dodgers or Mets would be a stigma or the Angels that will be worse than the Bambino’s Curse…..

As the budget stands today with no changes, Ohtani is already looking at a big raise next year and J-Up coming off the payroll, I believe Upton’s 28 mm and Ohtani’s current 5.5 mm would put him 10 mm short of the 43 mm. So if there are no other changes besides arb salaries the payroll will need at least a 15 mm boost. It could be more depending on other possible upgrades or it could be less if an Ohtani contract could be backloaded

Jeff Joiner

Thor costs $25 million. There’s an easy way to keep Ohtani. Of course the team gets worse under that scenario.

Senator_John_Blutarsky
Legend
Reply to  Jeff Joiner

Exactly. There’s been lots of failures to get the franchise to this point, but none greater than the farm system not developing MLB talent.

Arte is not taking payroll to $250M, so the only way to keep two superstars and one stupid contract is for the farm system to churn out low cost MLB players. Which is why if the team keeps Ohtani and Trout, the last three years will mirror the next 5+ years.

Jeff Joiner
Editor
Legend

Which brings me back to the 2021 draft.

The Angels constantly spend to fill 2 rotation spots and 2 bullpen spots each off season. Sometimes more. Thor, Lorenzen, Quijada, Teheran, Cody Allen, Matt Harvey, etc.

Makes me think Perry is trying to pull off a completely, or nearly completely, homegrown pitching staff for the last couple of years of Rendon’s deal. One in which Iglesias is likely the highest paid pure pitcher on the team.

It is a huge gamble, but after next year Loup and Tepera’s combined $14 million falls off the books. After this year Thor’s $25 million falls off the books. There’s $39 million.

But unless several of Bachman, Bush, Silseth, Murphy and the crew turn into good MLB pieces, the plan goes to hell quickly.

Not sure how I feel about CBD involvement with MLB. I am very against sports betting being promoted by MLB, so the CBD thing is in the same category for me. I realize there are a number of known medical uses but CBD, but many players have been suspended for use of marijuana, how do we know they did not use it for “medicinal” purposes? Seems hypocritical to me.

But Manfred seems to be all about money and little about baseball. No matter how they spin it the young teen players will see MLBs involvement with gambling and CBD and think it is ok to gamble and smoke pot. They say pot does not lead to harder drugs, but in my experiences with multiple individuals, that was not the case.

That’s my 2 cents worth. Please go easy if you disagree, I am just expressing my opinion. I am getting to be an old man who says what he wants. Oh and stay off of my grass!

I have no issues with anyone who uses CBD, marijuana use if you want is fine, but why does gambling and CBD use infiltrate MLB and MiLB and expose youth to these harmful items? MONEY, “SHOW ME THE MONEY”. Selig looked the other way while PED’s ruined MLB for years because of money. And that spineless slug is in the HoF. Hard liquor advertising has bothered me for years. Beer advertising never made me want to drink beer, but maybe it did. Smoking and Tabacco use involvement in MLB with advertising introduce me to smoking? Again, I am not sure. It really would better to keep some things out of MLB no matter the cost.

I do not care for Manfred and the way he leads baseball. I do not trust him at all.

If it wasn’t able to be absorbed into the blood stream through the skin, it probably wouldn’t be very effective as a pain reliever for joint pain.

CBD is the non psychoactive portion of the marijuana plant. Nobody smokes it. CBD is taken in pill or oil form.

It is really a natural form of Advil or Motrin but without the damaging effects to your kidneys and liver.

As far as actual weed, if it and alcohol were both discovered today the safer choice would be considered weed all day every day.
