LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Still With Us?

Hi all. Are you still with us? Hang in there. On Sunday, I saw a guy at the zoo wearing what looked to be a brand new Rendon jersey. The Angels have some of the most daring fans around, I guess. Speaking of which, Anthony Rendon aggravated his previously existing right wrist injury. Jared Walsh says he’s “a hands guy.” (Probably not what you’re thinking.)

Two Angels made the Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week. They were catcher Edgar Quero of the Inland Empire 66ers and right handed pitcher Landon Marceaux of the Tri-City Dust Devils. I wonder if those guys are getting paid.

Non-Angels Links

That was quick. The Twins designated Elliot Soto for assignment. Tyler Mahle pitched nine brilliant innings for the Reds. Go figure.

Brandon Drury, anyone? MLB Trade Rumors thinks he could provide the Angels a boost at second base. He’s an inexpensive bat.

Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena is on the injured list with left thumb discomfort. The Astros just got two immaculate innings in the same game from two different pitchers against the same three batters. This seems like it must have been rather embarrassing for the Rangers.

Speaking of embarrassing, at least this isn’t a Detroit Tigers site. There’s still that. (The link is about them using three position players to pitch in a 13-0 blowout.)

The Mets might soon get Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom back.

Tigers just blew a 1-0 lead in the 9th on a 3-run triple by the Rangers. The Cubs are on a long losing streak too. There are other terrible, awful, shitty no-good teams besides us, ya know.

If you were the GM, would you for 2023 like to see Trouty move to RFor LF? Maybe move him to 1st and put Walsh in the OF? OF of Walsh-Marsh-Ward doesn’t soud bad. Or an Outfield of Trout/Marsh- Trout/Marsh-Ward/Adell. Marsh is just like Walsh, having a hard time with hitting lefties. So, what about trading for Mancini, plays both corners and 1b? What would you do?

Trout won’t move to LF or RF just yet. He threw a fit when Joe was trying to snooker him. Jury is still out on Marsh.

Personally, I think the Angels should move away from Walsh, Not far from his All-Star breakout, cost controlled and good fielder. Should be a decent trade chip in a package to add OF depth. With Walsh’s ugly splits, it will be hard to build upon his stat line from last year. Can sign Mancini (2023 mutual option at $10M).

Machado doing so well in San Diego is a ball-buster for me. 2 years prior to him becoming a FA I zeroed in on hoping we would get him. Then the Dodgers picked him up when Seager was injured, but with Seager returning and having Turner at 3rd he became a FA. But we passed and a former employee of the Angels would later tell me, there were those that thought he was a head case an a “Gang-Banger”. Well, the very next year we got the most expensive 3rd in history and you know the rest of the story. Arenado is going to be on the market this coming off season, but why would we pay 70 million a year for 3b. Interesting how things turn out to woulda, shoulda scenarios and hindsight is 20-20.

I do hope that Rendon finishes his contract on the upbeat, that would help us out a lot.

I can see the MFNYY vs SD Padres in the WS. That would be cool, both have the pitching.

No thanks to Manny. Just last night I watched a video compilation of all the times he’s gotten into fights, or tried to intentionally hurt another player. He legit tried to throw his bat at a pitcher on a swing after the pitcher almost hit him with the previous pitch. I’m sure he’s matured over the years, but I just can’t stand that guy.

Unless there are some opt-Outs, the coming up Free Agent class is weak at best. SS does not offer anyone, but Trea Turner and you know the Dodgers will not let him go. Correa is paid 35mil per in Minnesota and likely will not Opt-Out. Swanson may end up a FA though that depends how much the Braves want him. Why down at the bottom of the list is Simmons who last night played 2B for the Cubs. Not suggesting we pick him up as a starter, but a very interesting bench player. Simmons would also fit our budget.

Not the Derby. I am interested in the Futures Game. Sunday afternoon, actual baseball game, chance to put on my GM hat and make rash decisions about players based off 2 at bats….

Dodgers are playing here that night too. Ill be at the futures game, 1st time for that. I’ve seen the doyer beat up the angels plenty of time both here and there. I do remember one year we went 5-0 against them and won the 5th game at home on a fluke. Probably the last time I remember have a one up on my doyer nation ‘friends’

For the game itself, not many if any good seats left. For the other events there is some good opportunities left. For the game the tix are pricey. But it a once every 20 years that SoCal gets this chance.

Yes, but as you know, he was 29 when we signed him…. so super old. And four seasons before we signed him he missed half a season hurt, so it should have been obvious he’s going to be hurt all the time. He’s also going to be in his late 30s when the contract runs out. We need to find all star third basemen who will sign three year contracts for half the going rate.

Stupid Arte.

Between tonight and June 29, we play 8 games against the Mariners, 3 against the Royals, and 3 against the White Sox. We need to go about 11-3 in these 14 games to redirect the season back to a good path. But I am sure that Mariners, Royals, and White Sox fans are saying, “great, we get to play the Angels, let’s hope we can sweep them.”

I know that we have injuries but some of the roster decisions are baffling.

I’ll take the offense returning to keeping us in games and take my chances on the W-L record. If all of our sub .250 hitters can get at least back to .250 by the middle of July, we will win a lot of games. Once you pass Duffy in the lineup, we are just sink and sunk. So once our AAA players have learned to hit again, we are going nowhere on a fast track. It will at least be difficult for the A’s to pass us. 😁

Not trying here for an argument, but at what point do we reach do or die? When we are at the last mathematical number to be out, or sometime in August? See, I think we are at do or die now, and I admit that I do not know when do or die really is. The sooner we turn this mess around the better, so I believe do or die is now against some weaker teams. So when to you is do or die?

May doesn’t matter, June doesn’t matter, July doesn’t matter, good chunk of August doesn’t matter.

Mid August? Now we’re talking!!! Sayonara worthless 3 months of the season, the Halos are kicking it up a notch!!!

Seriously though, you’re never gonna sweep every series. But one of the few things Soth said (minus turning the page) that I really like was trying to win 2 out of 3 in a series. No massive win streaks but nothing like what we witnessed losing wise. These guys have played one great game in recent memory. The very next day they did nothing. It’s almost like they’re just expecting it to happen and when it doesn’t we get to watch the opposition rack up 0’s like nobodies business while our No hit throwing pitcher was saved from giving up 6 runs in one inning by a great catch.

Every team has injuries, that’s when you fight through and play .450-.500 ball til everyone gets back. Not our angels. They’re just seemingly going thru the motions. It’s a very boring product. I watched teams that weren’t going anywhere from the get go but they laid it all out there. I miss that.

This is a stiff left jab at our inept scouting and player development from mostly the last decade. Tony Gonsolin (Yeah as in Tuesday night’s starter) was a 9th Rd pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. He’s now 8-0 and now let’s review The Dodgers have since 2019 lost Yu Darvish, Alex Wood, Hyun Jin Ryu, Zack Greinke, Trevor Bauer, and Max Scherzer without as much as a hiccup. That’s a All Star starting rotation there Buttercups THEY SEEM TO SHIT OUT GOOD PITCHING LIKE A ELEPHANT….

Late 9th round (its the Doyers, always drafting at the end of the round).Again a lot of teams passed on him 30X8.5….and you forgot to mention he signed for only $2,500, slotted for a $163,000 signing bonus?

Seems to me that even Mr. Gonsolin is surprised by his success after signing for so little. That is way less than your favorite Ass’tro pitchers you tout for the bargain basement price of $10,000.

he’s 28 years and was drafted 7 years ago . so he should finally be producing in the big leagues . I suspect within the next 6+ years we will produce quality starting pitching again unlike Dipoto’s and Eppler’s reigns of incompetent player development.

As childishly absurd it is to consistently bring up players drafted in the 10th round that we missed on, it made me look at the 2016 draft by the Doyers. Wow.
Unless you subscribe to my deep-dark-web conspiracy that they cheat with secret gene altering injections that gives them baseball super powers, they are the best at drafting and developing MLB talent.

Thank you for these constant reminders. I keep forgetting that other teams are also in the market for players and also have the ability to draft players and also want good players. I always find myself thinking the Halos can pick and choose any player they want at any time, but then your thoughtful comments bring me back to reality.

The Pandas are the center of this organizations universe.

Future plans for the AA Panda pitchers? Will they promote the studs to AAA when ready? Or use AA as a holding pen and let them jump straight to the big club like Detmers, Silseth. Temps are rising along with the runs being scored at AAA not the best environment to develop.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Even with these guys at AA – the farm is still rated in the upper 20’s by most publications. Help that can produce at the MLB level is likely a 2025-2026 proposition.

Few of them at AA will be ready by next year…asking if they should avoid AAA altogether? Overall, limit exposure to Salt Lake with its possible damage to development.

Wondering the percentage of players who jump AAA ball and go straight into MLB and stay there. It does seem to happen, never play a full season at the AAA level. Maybe 50%.

Boy, oh boy, why was I so naive to believe 87-90 wins? We sure had fun at the start though, so there was that. Starting pitching is better, but the Blowpen may have different names, it remains the same. But how can the offensive game plan have fallen so fast and so bad? I can’t believe that anyone, but the players can be responsible.

I now think a POBO is in order. I’m not advocating the firing of Perry. He’s in the middle of a large organizational rebuild . If we got rid of him it would be lost and we would be in even worse shape than at JeDi’s Departure or Eppler’s End.

But a true POBO with real authority could manage the organization through these questionable moves by Perry that are not imploding the team.

ok, this set will determine where we go, up or down. A bad series and the season is over. A bad series and Perry will trade people away. I know…how can it get worse if we already have four or five automatic outs in the lineup?

But anyway….if we take 4 of 5…let’s see…29-35… then 33-36. Yeah, if we get to 33-36 we’ll have some hope. I think anything worse than that and I might have to become a doomer.
