LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Pitcher Day

Most of the links are about pitchers today. I guess it’s pitcher day. Jimmy Herget got a little attention from the Pitching Ninja. Meanwhile, Michael Lorenzen got a lot of attention from Fangraphs.

The Astros are going with a temporary six man rotation because they will only have one day off in 34 days. The Royals acquired right hander Matt Peacock from the Diamondbacks for cash considerations.

The Dodgers are now having COVID related absences. Here is Kyle Schwarber getting himself kicked out of a baseball game. This is pretty intense. It’s a pitcher catching a line drive comebacker without using a glove. Speaking of line drive comebackers, Tyler Zombro just pitched a AAA game less than a year after having 16 plates and 36 screws put into his head. Holy mackerel!

Angel Hernandez doing what he does best (or worst).

Ok so I’ll humor you. What are you trying to point out here?

That players under team control make less?
That the Giants should have traded for France?
That Joc is overpaid?

Joc isn’t overpaid.
But Justin Upton still is and he can’t field anymore either.
I can’t point out a good player personnel move by another team with a better won loss record and lower team payroll now?
Thin skin here?

You didn’t point anything out. You posted some pics and some stats.

It’s still not clear if you’re saying France getting paid pre-arb money is the good move or if Joc is the good move.

This is a guy who would post pictures of other players and other GMs even if the Angels won the World Series. He is hoping you will get pissy and respond in anger. That is what he wants. Stop giving him what he wants.

We did have Pederson for a while, he fields well and is a cheap left handed power bat who the Giants signed on a one yr. How’s our defense going again, apparently it’s gonna be a issue yet again.

Hey maybe a dumb question, if so I’ll use my “1 dumb question per month” allotment now. Is Taylor Ward the “Taylor Blake Ward” that has done so much Twitter posting over the last few years? Usually the tweets were in support of other players or detailed stuff about baseball. That “Taylor Blake Ward” I really like and am hoping it’s the same guy. Thanks!

Just a happy accident. Taylor Blake Ward covers the Angels and is not one and the same with Taylor Ward the baseball god.

The Kyle Schwarber and Angel Hernandez links are linked. Schwarber is rightfully pissed. Hernandez called a terrible game culminating in a blown call in the bottom of the 9th that turned a 1-out walk, placing the tying run on base, into the 2nd out.

This video that shows you what Schwarber said is totally worth 5 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPFERnpO-QQ

It’s absurd that Hernandez is ever put behind the plate, never mind on a Nationally televised Sunday night game. But maybe at least this showcases how truly horrible he is.

And the umps have no accountability. Once you are in, you are in and considered tenured. Sure, you have the media and bloggers calling them out, but have you ever heard of an umpire being disciplined or demoted to the minor leagues?

fishfarm

To top that, he is super litigious as well. If he perceives he’s being shadow disciplined by losing post-season assignments he calls up Frito Pendejo and files the most dumb dumb lawsuit possible, given the abundant and downright abhorrent video evidence that supports the un-biased reason he doesn’t get primo assignments.

Was that game protested by the opponent? It certainly should have been because that is actually what the “protest” is for. It is for either a misinterpretation or misapplication of the rule book. Unfortunately the protest was removed as an option by MLB in 2021. But if that game happened prior to the 2021 season the protest should still have been on the table.

The last protest that was upheld by MLB was in 2014.

I’m not sure that applies. The skillset required for a MLB umpire are the same as for a minor league umpire.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Hernandez got his promotion because he was one of the few umpires with a hispanic last name and the minimum experience requirements.

Race Card only when convenient. Hernandez can get away with anything that a bad umpire can. He has sued MLB using the race card. Complain to libel press about how he’s treated and still the powers to be fear him.

I guess the impending 8 man bullpen limitation gets a reprieve. Now the question is will the Angels take advantage of this ? If they do it would mean both Captain Jack and the Jo Adell will be heading to the Great Salt Lake next week. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/04/mlb-mlbpa-allowing-14-pitchers-on-active-rosters-through-may-29-13-pitcher-limit-to-take-effect-thereafter.html

It would be kind of sad to see Jo go back down to Salt Lake. I mean, despite his defensive struggles, I do think he deserves a chance at regular playing time. Now is the time. I never want to wish injury on anyone, but it would be shall we say “convenient” if Rendone got some sort of new issue that put him on the 60 day IL. After all, he has been saying that his lower half is not under him and he’s not fully healed. Well, I have a solution, how bout getting fully healthy before you come back? Don’t play until you are 100%. That way we don’t have to listen to your excuses. We don’t do excuses here.

But if something else sort of cropped up, like an injured toe, or hangnail or something, then we could move Ward to 3B while Gump and Jo played with Trout in the OF.

That would be ideal !

Blake hasn’t played Third at the big league level since 44 games back in the 2018-2019 seasons and the defensive metrics were not very kind to him. His time there included 7 errors, a BIS defensive saved runs above average of -23 and a Range factor of 1.84 when the average 3B league range factor is 2.61.

I think I’d prefer Tony’s Tin Hip.

New agreement reduces pitchers to 14 from 15 so you will have 1 less pitcher

Cowboy26

Up to 14 pitchers (Ohtani doesn’t count against that total) so that would mean up to a 9 man bullpen. I would think it will be Iggy, Tepera, Loup, Archie, Ortega, Mayers, Barria, Herget and hopefully Buttrey. The A & W boys will probably be sent back down to AAA to keep sharp.

I don’t really see the benefit in sending Adell down right now. I like seeing Ward with the hot bat and I wouldn’t take him out right now, but I think that overall, Maddon could do some job sharing between Walsh, Ward, and Adell for the corner outfield spots and also use them to spell Trout and Ohtani (who looks like he could use a day off or two). Between all of that, there should be enough playing time so that Ward, Adell, and Marsh can each start between 65 and 85% of the games. We’re at the beginning of a stretch of days with no byes, so having some folks to play would be good.

I also don’t really see a reason to send Mayfield down. While we all like Velazquez’s glove, his bat has been non-existent. When Fletch returns, I think they should send Velazquez down.

I like your time sharing plan. In particular, giving Shohei a night off now and then is a good idea. Especially over the course of a full season he will need that.

Cap Jack already has his ticket, Spirit Air, dated 5-2-2022 or when Fletch reappears, Section A, Row 12, Seat C, it’s a window seat. He has a 4 hour layover in Albuquerque……….Cheap Arte.

Adell not sure……Wantz has only 1 inning so far. Do we go bold and send his ass down, “we don’t need no stinking 14 pitchers”.

Adell also might stick because I’m sure this “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” thing ain’t going away, eventually someone will need the IL.

I hope he can get his hitting mojo back. For a couple years there he seemed like a “mini -Vlad”. And the day after he signed his extension, at least to me, it looked like he couldn’t hit any more. With that being said he is probably my favorite player, or one of them, on the team. A lot of the plays he makes in the field make my jaw drop with “wow!”…

I’m hoping we see Marsh tonight. If we don’t, his stomach Flu may be something he is really sick with, and we all hope for a quick recovery. Adell has gone 2 games without a strikeout. And a shout out to Fletch, get back in the hitting zone by staying within yourself. Stay in the strike zone and your hitting will return and you’ll be returning soon.

Going for 3 in a row tonight and we will prevail 8-5 with Mike, Anthony and Walsh hitting well.

Good morning and a great day this promises to be. Last night we saw one of the oddest triples in history. The ball traveled all of 175 feet and Trout push a single into a double and then said, “OH what the heck why not” and pushed it into a triple. More for less.

So. Joe has a brain flash. Ward is hot and Shohei is not. I think I’ll put Ward at leadoff. A wave of a wand and presto 2 HRs in one night. Good for Joe and great for Ward. Wonder if Wally and the Beave saw the game.? lol

We are now still a half game out still, but you know we will win tonight again. 6:40pm start once more.

Lorenzen was just lights out in a pitching duel, just simply outstanding.

…and there’s this nugget:

In a murder trial, the defense attorney was cross-examining the coroner:
Before you signed the death certificate, did you take the pulse, listen to the heart or check for breathing?

No.

So, when you signed the death certificate, you weren’t sure the man was dead, were you?

Well, the man’s brain was in a jar on my desk, but I suppose he could have still been practicing law for a living.
