LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Roster mixing

Good morning Angels fans, how is your day today? Have some links!

Angels News

The Angels beat the Astros last night. It is rather new, as the Angels have a horrible record vs the Astros all time. Maybe THIS year will be a good year. However, the Angels are still only 2-4 vs the Astros in 2022.

Speaking of the game, the Angels radio broadcast fell for satire. An intern will get fired for this.

Mike Trout is still DTD. Oh he might hit today, not that anyone believes Maddon. I worry too.

Anthony Rendon will apparently be having a lot of off days this year as well.

On the other end of the scale, Shohei Ohtani may play every game this year if he has his way.

Perry continues to shuffle his players around, Wantz is back up, Kenny is back down. That was fast.

The infield is rotating door, Maddon likes Andrew Velazquez and he may be the starting SS now.

Around Baseball

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo is sick of whining players who can’t follow rules. I mean, he has a right to be mad.

Rockies continue to confuse everyone by extending their pitcher Kyle Freeland to a 5/64.5M deal. Confusing since they can’t seem to make up their mind on spending or not.

Who us the fastest player in baseball? Looks like it is Julio, but Adell at number 2?

Hey look, 3 Angels

Meanwhile, the slowest players do not include any Angels! Well, except Kurt Suzuki, but he’s the fastest of the slowest!

Former Angel Alex Cobb is hurt. I bet people will blame the Angels for that.

Greg Holland has now been in MLB for 10 years. He has been DFA-ed.

The Mets have made a sensory nook for people to take a break from the noise if they need to. As someone who knows severely autistic kids, it is a nice gesture.

Look at it!

Games around Baseball keep getting postponed. Some teams have only played 9 games so far. The Angels have played 12.

Former Angel Sean Newcombe has been DFA-ED by the Braves. Come on Perry, get him!

Padres blink first, put ads on jerseys next year.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Good for the Mets. I have a few friends with autistic kids. We’ve spent a few innings out on the grass area out by the left field entrance.

I’m fine with Velasquez at SS until the trade deadline. He brings a damn good glove and one outstanding skill is more than Wade or Mayfield have.

Other than the fact that our 2015 1st round draft pick is hitting .333 .474 .600 1.074, with 1 HR (in a third of the ABs), I am not sure of your point.

Do you think anyone of us looks back fondly on the Angels 2015 draft? You have followed the fanbase since then right? (Or perhaps, not?).

If he doesn’t play Friday at home after an off day tomorrow, I will officially be concerned.

Trout couldn’t really help being hit on the hand, that’s a freak injury, but I think I was expecting him to be a bit more – I don’t know – rugged, sturdy, a work horse along the lines of Cal Ripken Jr. In addition to this hand injury he also missed some days this season with a tummy ache. Last year he had a calf strain which kept him out the greater part of the season. Granted, I know nothing about calf strains but it does not sound like an injury that makes you lose months of playing time.

If the team is paying him a bazillion dollars, he should be doing everything he can to get on the field, not milking injuries.

Actually he could have helped it. All he needed to do was turn his back into the pitch like most players do. It was stupid to pull his hands right into the spot the pitch was thrown ! He really could have avoided it if he just turned his body inwards so the pitch would hit him on the butt !!

With an off-day tomorrow, it may make sense to sit him today as he gets an extra day of healing.

I’m skeptical of everything they say about injuries, but with the off day tomorrow, keeping him out of the lineup today to get two more days rest makes some sense.

No this more about finding the best avenue of spending county tax dollars. If they didn’t utilize Angel telecasts then they would target some other show.

Of the 30 Major League Baseball teams, this might be the only use of taxpayer dollars to hire a baseball team for such mental health outreach.

So I have a suggestion . The County can simply stop spending their money with the Angels. If they think its ineffective stop running the adds. How does this get Arte in trouble?

Also its up to Arte how he and the Angels spends their PSA air time or the angel foundation monies. I’m not aware of any accusations of improprieties or misuse of funds. Are there any?

This is a much ado about nothing article. I’m not an expert but I actually think the adds are effective and am glad that there is more on-air platforms about mental health.

I’m glad someone is asking about the use of tax payers money. God knows we need ALOT more of that but somehow making this about the Angels sinister dealings is politicians trying to deflect their own culpability toward their constituents

History tells us that in the last 7 seasons we have an Achilles heel when coming up to facing Left-handed pitching. Against Right-handed pitching we hold our own, but this season a record is 3-4. But against those lefties we are 4-1, because we have more than 2 LH hitters. We have the hitters, jump on the train and enjoy this team and season.

One website says they have depth however no high level premium prospects…
I don’t wanna see Perry use the same strategy this year again. He needs to cherry pick for high level talent at SS, SP, and 3B in rounds 1-4.

It’s below your paygrade 2002….You see this is a recently drafted young prospect. Your specialty is commenting on already established studs.
This is the “hopeful early process”, just a seed that’s been planted and cultivated.
Your specialty is after the seed becomes a Sequoia. That’s when you share with us your special kind of wisdom and hindsight. Stick to your talents my friend, come back in 4 or 5 years to comment.

I was just saying the other night that Velazquez needs to stay in the starting lineup. Our offense is good enough that we don’t need another hitter.

With the way our pitching staff is generating ground balls this year, it makes sense to keep him out there.

Cowboy26

Well they could cut the bullpen down to 8 players thereby keeping the current bench ( until Fletch returns of course) but with our lack of starter stamina we would have a bunch of tired bullpen arms with only 2 optional players.

admkir

Reply to  Cowboy26

If the league goes with 13 man pitching staff, your 8 man bullpen is correct so we will be stretched out due to options. We will still have a decision to make when Fletcher returns. Maybe Marsh or Adell to AAA

GrandpaBaseball

Marsh? He leads the team in RBI, he is above average in the OF while playing all 3 positions, well maybe you are right, does he pitch?

admkir

No he doesn’t pitch and I agree about how he is doing. What I should have done was list everyone with options, which would have included players like Valasquez and Mayfield

You are spot on Admkir. the Angels cant carry more than 8 bullpen pitchers after 26 man roster rules are implemented May 1st. That means 2 relief pitcher spots will be in constant shuffle between Anaheim and the great salt lake. With the new CBA a player can only be optioned 5 times in a season and each option must be a minimum 15 days unless there is an injury.

Gonna be a lot of teams with recurring “hangnail” injuries this season so a pitcher can come back up before the 15 days are over.

Today Showtime will shine on the mound and pitching 6 innings and striking out 10 and giving up 1 run. We will take 2 of 3 and retain 1st place.

“Fatboy IS ONE OF the most injury prone players of all time and I feel really bad for him. Just imagine the numbers he would have right now if not for the dings and dents.”

I wrote that. I did not write that Trouty was the most injured. David Wright is also one of the most injured too, I agree.

“Cool. Thanks for clarifying. I too think that Grandpa was waaaay off in that comment. But then Grandpa is way off about alot of of things.”

Mike Trout has played in 67.3 % of his team’s games since the start of the 2017 season. He has missed 233 games in that time. Just shy of a season and a half. In his career Mike Trout has played in 82.1% of his team’s games not including 2011 or 2022.

So, to state that I’m waaaay off is a tad bit of let’s say an overstatement possibly. “Way off on a lot of things.” is accurate. Every season I state that we will be winners, I do predict that the Angels will win every game. Those statements amount to a lot of games to be way off on.

Mike Trout being referred to as “Fatboy” is a tongue in cheek reference to back in 2016 when someone posted that Trouty was fat in reference to his lack of playing time.

Just in passing if a player is involved in 150 games of 162 played, he would be in 92.6% of his team’s games. Mike has surpassed that 4 times.

Mike Trout is the GOST in my book, along with being my favorite player of all time.

Just the facts ma’am, just the facts.

Fatboy goes back to like 2014 when there was a comment about how Trout was getting too bulky and not stealing bases anymore… I know I said a dumb comment about him getting fat but there was a few people who worried the same. Not totally wrong though…. He was finally told by the team to focus on legs

MLBs 10 Nasty new pitches to watch:

Andrew Heaney’s slider

Heaney came to the Dodgers, redesigned his breaking ball to the “sweeper” style of slider, and now the lefty has a zero ERA and 16 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings. The spin axis of his new slider is more horizontal than his old curveball, producing a movement direction that’s more left-to-right than before. It’s working. Ten of Heaney’s 16 K’s are on his new slider — including eight in his last start — and hitters are swinging and missing at it over half the time.

If he sustains it over the season, good for him.

As has been mentioned, he was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the Halos. Too much inconsistency to keep around. However, it does beg the question, why was this not tried when he was with the Halos? Of course, for all we know it was proposed but he was hesitant. Once he was traded to the Skanks and then sent to the pen, maybe the lightbulb went on that he had to do something.

I sound redundant I know, but I just want to point out that at times patience is required when something is obvious that you have a hard time selling it because of a slow start. I have been on the win train since Spring Training with the Halos. We have the hitting! We have the Pitching! Being optimistic is so much fun especially when a plan comes together.

In 10 days huge decisions are coming. When the roster is pared down who goes? Is Velcro the new SS? Does Fletch go to 2b or Traded? Does Wade get unconditional release. Adell go to Salt Lake? Capt. Jack become a Bee? Tough stuff to decide, I’m glad that being in Fandom allows me to just watch.

Having a seat on the Angels Win Train makes watching the pairing down of the pitching staff easier than making the cuts themselves.

Yes I believe we will be in the Playoffs this season for sure. We are an aggressive team. We are a power team. We are a tough to defend team as we just keep running, 1st to 3rd, 2nd to Home, base stealing, constant moving and motion. The Angels are exciting and not the Angels of 2021.

Jump up on the Win Train and enjoy the ride.
