Rangers rain down Texas sized destruction on Angels

Angels 5 Rangers 10

Well, the series opener against the Rangers was less than ideal. I should have scheduled my root canal instead because then I’d at least be numb and feel less pain.

This game was terrible and there is no way around that. If you tuned out early, can’t really blame you. Who needs this much pain in one night?

Shohei Ohtani didn’t even make it through 4 innings and he served up a grand slam in the 2nd inning. The 4th inning was no kinder to him and in the end, Ohtani’s ERA ballooned to 7.56

Mike Trout at least gave us a 1st inning highlight in the form of this mammoth moon shot. Sadly, things went downhill fast from here.

Brandon Marsh also drove in a run, putting the Angels up (very) briefly 2-0 before the Rangers pitching staff shut them down until a 2 run homer by Stassi in the 8th (thanks old friend Garrett Richards!). No matter. It was too little, too late.

Defense? Not much better. Rendon had 2 of the 3 Angels errors. A whole slew (official stat, ok fine, it was 9 of 12) of Angels hitters struck out looking. I think the Angels probably even forgot to feed a hungry puppy tonight.

The Angels managed 11 hits and both Marsh and Stassi logged a pair. But in the end, this was a pretty ugly game. Days like this I am thankful this is a 162 game season – or should I be scared?

I don’t know how good Kyle Tyler was or could be but the Angels gave him up a second time to use Moran

Once upon a time there was hope and it all faded away quickly. Between the on-field performance and the sucky broadcast I bailed in the bottom of the 7th. I know the broadcast team is working remotely for no good reason but at least Gubi and Victor did a far superior at it in 2020, I also understand that part of this team is built on speed but how many times are we going to see Wade thrown out at home. Everyone is saying that we are suffering from a shortened spring training, but my question would be did the teams we’re losing to get a head start. We beat the Marlins but we are losing badly with-in our own division, I really hope it gets turned around.
Sorry for the length, probably my longest ever

I thought Rendon was supposed to be a great glove at 3rd base?

Maybe it was that he has a glove with “grate” sized gaps?

My kid, who plays 3rd base on his Little League Majors team, shouted “Oh my god Rendon, you have to make that routine play. I could have made that play”.

The yearly cycle continues: bad starting pitching with poor defense. Losing is not a surprise.

Awful game but the 500 pound gorilla is that Otani is batting .175 and has a 7.56 ERA. His second half was nowhere near his first half of 2021. I know everybody wants his baseball card and is all excited about his historic season. But I would not pay Ohtani $50 million a year or even $40 million . If he continues on this path, it’s going to be a long season.

Well, at least we’re paying Rendon $37 million a year to suck.

And once again, a former Halo goes to Texas and bites us in the ass… Kole Calhoun doing Red Baron-y things for Texas now, robs Shohei of a double.

I didn’t realize Jonah Heim and Corey Seager were both former Angels.

I’ve gotten used to the on-field product being garbage but the broadcast being fumbled so badly for this long is among the most offensive things this ownership/executive group has done.

To be so out of touch with your own fans and how they experience games/grow attached to a singular announcer etc. is just jarring. It’s like they’re just mailing it in at this point and don’t really care about this franchise.

And that is why I watch the pirate feed as they often have the other team’s announcers. Arte’s broadcast crew is atrocious. Gubie is great but everything else is shockingly bad bad bad.

I didn’t mind the Angels awfulness as much when we had Dick Enberg making the call. This crew takes it beyond my ability to cope.

Remember when the crew was Dick Enberg with Don Drysdale, Don Welles, Dave Niehaus, and Dick Nelson? I do. We lost all the time, but the broadcasts were STELLAR!

Why aren’t the Angel announcers actually at the game? Covid? Save Arte a buck or two?

Matt is a very important person with many important jobs. You should be grateful he decides to pop in remotely every other week to grace us with his calls, ok?

I remember a Ronald Reagan story he recalled where he would “call” games on the radio after he read teletypes from the game feed many decades ago…I can only imagine that broadcast was still be better than what we heard with less lag. I turned it off and may not watch any road games if this what we can expect. It was a bonus to hear how excited Matty V was about the Rangers grand slam 🙂

reading the teletype is superior to having video and calling it from a remote location. Reading the teletype means no delay between action and call (from the listener’s viewpoint). They’d hit a wood block to simulate the bat hitting the ball and then “describe” what happened, often making it pretty dramatic!

Because our billboard braintrust sincerely believe the fans are morons who are in awe of Big Names.

The Angels are run by people who finish 8th place in their fantasy league every year.

They have always been desperate to be seen as first class and go with Pujols Hamilton Matty V instead of pursuing quality.

Brett Kerry had another stellar outing today for the Trash Pandas tonight. he pitched 5 innings given up 1 run ( a HR) but walked only one. Ended up striking out 12 of the 17 batters he faced. That now puts his season ERA at 0.90 with 20 strike outs in 10 innings. Not bad for last years 5th round draft pick.

Not sure that we have done that for awhile. Of course its not like we’ve had any thing of value to trade away recently.

Here’s a story on Kerry’s performance . It must have been a slow day. https://www.milb.com/news/brett-kerry-strikes-out-12-for-rocket-city-trash-pandas

I think the TV announcers, presumably Matt V and Gubie, were not in Texas at the game. You could tell there was a bit of a delay in their play by play. Sorry, but I think this takes away from their ability to really capture what’s going on.

Any other respectable franchise would have fans forcing the hand of the media to ask why these choices were made. Luckily for carpino we are the only 12 people who watch an angels TV broadcast so nothing will change.

Wouldn’t shock me if Valentine became an acquaintance of either Arte or Carpino and campaigned for it. They’re easy marks.

Its no coincidence that Bobby V’s longtime friendship with the Mansion family got him in the door with Arte & Carpino.

I’m sure his infamous Angel past , didnt hurt either. This gives a good background of his Angel career. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/947491-red-sox-candidate-bobby-valentine-overcame-gruesome-injury-as-a-player

Get used to it, he is a team AMBASSADOR – he hangs out in the stands to get recognized and shake fan hands, make everyone feel good about the team (oh diamond club only but hey, not too shocking), is probably advising the team on personnel moves or handling players with personal situations and the occasional announcing spot
