LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: MiLB Dealing

Good morning Angels fans! Games are almost here! Have some links.

Angels News

Angels sign Andrew Romaine to a MiLB deal. Hey, can HE be the backup catcher instead?

Ohtani is looking great so far in camp. He wants to get better too? Oh wow the work ethic, please don’t get hurt.

The Angels have been given a 38% chance to make the playoffs by Fangraphs, somehow. That’s nothing, though, since Baseball Prospectus giving the Angels a 68% chance to make the playoffs! Do they know some moves we don’t?!

Fangraphs seriously likes the Angels pitching. No idea why they keep building the fans up.

New Angels pitcher Michael Lorenzen is maybe going to hit this season? Even he is confused that he has a batting helmet.

Angels sign a pitcher! To an MiLB deal. Well, it’s something.

Maddon believes in Kurt, but says he declined from being overworked. Maybe this means more Stassi than last year.

Looks like Thaiss is getting catching reps in spring with the rotation… is that hope I feel?

Around Baseball

Youtube will stream 21 games this season. Honestly, I do enjoy them quite a bit, somehow they have fewer ads than on TV.

Braves extended Matt Olsen who they just acquired in a trade to an 8/168M deal. Well, he is far younger than Freeman, guess that makes sense.

NYC mandate says that Yankees and Mets players need to be vaccinated to play. Aaron Judge isn’t vaccinated, and the Mets may have plenty of players who aren’t either.

Tatis Jr. will no longer be on a motorcycle ever again. Therefore, from now on, he is bikeless.

Braves get reliver Collin McHugh. Because of course the Angels didn’t get him, they can’t have nice things.

Anthony Rizzo stays with NYY, which makes yet another Freeman suitor satisfied.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Mets are over 300M, Dodgers are at 277M and will probably add a little more. Yankees will be up there too if they pay a pitcher and Judge.

Obviously Arte hates winning, thus just 180M. Time to sell the team to Putin. That guy gets shit done and will have a 500M payroll. He will also just tell good players they play for him now. He will also not pay the luxury tax and let the MLB and owners to just speak up and let him know if any of them have a problem with it. Our players will also be almost frantically motivated. Putin. The answer to all our problems. Let’s go Putin.

If you sell to Putin the budget will be the same, he’ll say it’s 280 and pocket the extra 100M. The other 29 teams will just be threatened with their stadiums being nuked if they dare take the field against us.

WS Champs every year by forfeit, baybeeeeee.

Six years seems a long time for a 32-year old. But I guess 1B is a position in which you can have some sense of longevity.

OK, you’re right. So now you’ll be totally cool if we never sign a free agent over age 30 right? Or just sign the guys over 30 years old who are willing to take what, three year deals? Those guys are awesome. Or wait, just demand that really good free agents who are over 30 take short term deals from us, ie the CtPG dreamworld contract. I’m sure that’ll happen seeing as how Freeman just refused to do that with the last two WS champions.

Man do I hate bigtime free agents. PLEASE, for the love of Gah Arte, build that farm up.

Angels were never going to sign Freeman because he is a first baseman. I wish Freeman would have been a short stop then maybe something could have happened. Tired of hearing that the Dodgers can spend spend spend. Hope the Giants take them down this season.

Plenty of time before the season so I remain somewhat optimistic something cool happens.

If not, I’m convinced the real reason will have been the looming Skaggs settlement and nobody will be allowed to acknowledge it. Just “oh yeah we’re really feeling good about the guys we have” type stuff.

Cowboy26

Reply to  ihearhowie3.0

Doubtful it has to do with Skaggs. They probably have insurance for that.

I’m guessing its more about an impending extension for Ohtani. Arte is probably getting ready to spend a shitpile of money on Ohtani to kick in next year so this is why he doesn’t want any more multi year commitments right now.

We had those 2 free agents in a shortened 2020 with expanded playoffs and still missed the postseason. the AL is also considerably stronger and improved since then so 2020 status quo ain’t really getting it done.

This team cannot keep giving out 200-300 thousand dollar contracts. They need to start building on their farm system. That way you can make trades to improve the team. I believe Pujols was the first big contract that ruined what the team had going in the 2000’s.

I’m not a Joe Maddon fan, but the players like him. His choices with the Bullpen in the late innings were just mind blowing. Agreed he did not have a lot of choices but when it was known that one pitcher allowed base runners to score he did not get the memo and keep bringing him into games with runners on. I believe in the Stolen Base as it will distract the pitcher. I am aware the Geeks do like the SB because they do not translate to enough runs vs the runner being thrown out but they do not count the intangibles.

JackFrost

I have gone through this many times Grandpa. A manager HAS to use the players on his roster.

And unfortunately you can’t pitch your best reliever every day. That means a manager with a weak bullpen is FORCED to use certain relievers in non-optimal situations.

THIS is why it is so important to have reliable pieces in the pen and not just one guy (Raisel ) who you can count on.

Believe me, if he had Blake Treinen down there he would not have been going to Cisek.

what i see right now are four MIFs we know well – Captain Jack, Rojas, Fletch, and Rengifo.

And the new MIFs in camp? Velazquez, Gatewood, Wade, Duffman, Wong, Stefanic

the problem is, the BIG problem is, none of these new MIFs are looking much better than our old MIFs. And that means it does not appear we have a playoff caliber SS in this camp.

Maybe the new ones make us better at the margin and nothing wrong with that but we should prioritize a new SS.

(right now i’d say Rengifo is the favorite to start at SS opening day)

Here’s today’s pics. Raisel brought some smiles to the team.

Still have no idea at SS who it’ll be, but to me its the biggest gap on the squad.

Perry says Arte has given him ‘no limitations’ – ok prove it; sign Correa now.

This team will hit and score, and there’s enough in the bullpen. And just maybe we have enough starters if (a) Barria/Suarez can take another step up and (b) Thor/Lorenzen contribute meaningfully. Bachman and Detmers will be a big help too.

And maybe Freddie Freeman shows up tomorrow – you never know.

Story away from Coors Field is a .241/.310/.442 hitter. I like his glove and we need a shortstop, but playing in the AL West he’s likely to be an underwhelming hitter.

Correa has almost no splits despite knowingly cheating at home for a couple of years.

He’s a dick, but far more likely to actually earn his money here in Anaheim.

Jeff Joiner

I get that. I’m just hoping Story doesn’t get paid like he’s a middle of the order bat when he’s likely to be just a tad better than league average.

When you say underwhelming do you mean even worse than the production we’ve gotten out of the shortstop position the last 3 years ? Cuz that wont be hard to beat.

Jeff Joiner

Reply to  Cowboy26

I mean underwhelming based on what casual fans will expect. He’ll get big money, people will see his overall numbers, then think he’s a bust when he does exactly what he should: .250/.330/.440.

That’s not bad, but that’s definitely not the middle of the order type bat Story has been portrayed to be in the past, either.

Not sure the Astros look like as sure thing as everyone here seems to think they are. Bregman is always injured (he is day to day already) and McCullers is also hurt again.

Do they have more pitching depth than we do? It doesn’t seem so, at first glance (though I know more about our prospects than theirs), but seems like Josh James might have to start to open the season, and Forest Whitney (their top prospect a few years ago) is still fighting back from injury.

Certainly Houston is not what they were a couple of years ago, but they are still quite dangerous, and they don’t usually beat themselves. Being able to win close games will be key for us against them. And guess what, that usually comes down to the bullpen. We need big years out of Raisel (again) as well as Loup, Mayers and probably Buttrey as well.

Yep. There are indeed.

I checked some of the Futures lines for MLB yesterday. The Astros were the favorites to Win the AL West at (-166). The Angels were a distant second at I think (+310). At least the Astros are not huge favorites like they have been in recent years when they were like (-350).

Still, I am taking a wait and see attitude with the Halos this year. They might as well be the Royals and Cardinals and playing in Missouri because I am in a “Show Me” kind of mood. No more blind optimism. The Angels will have to prove to me that their SP is good enough to win this year.

Still, Luis Garcia is solid and Framber Valdez is capable of tossing a really good outing now and then and otherwise usually keeps them in the game. We’ll see what happens with McCullers and Verlander, but we know what both those guys are capable of doing. In addition, if they get Correa back the offense will be quite good (will be even if they don’t).

JackFrost

So, I guess Joe is to blame for aquiring Julio Teheran and expecting him to be an asset to the rotation? And Jose Quintana. And I guess he was responsible for signing Albert to that long contract that ate up a huge part of the salary cap for a decade ? People might say, well he played guys like Watson, Cisek, and other bullpen stiffs, but he has to play with the roster he’s given. As a manager you pretty much have to play the guys on your active roster. Unless you are ready to claim that Joe was 100% responsible for roster construction the last two years then I don’t see how he gets blamed. You have to have a complete roster to win as a manager, with very few exceptions.

Ironically, Joe is one of the managers that managed to win with less than stellar talent while he was in Tampa Bay. Usually that kind of magic trick cannnot be accomplished.

And Joe has won Manager of the Year three separate times(2008, 2011 and 2015). I guess each of those years he just got “lucky,” right?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  JackFrost

Yup. That’s what I typed. I am saying it was Maddon who signed Tehran, Quintana, Albert… hell, let’s throw Allen and Harvey in there too. I am obviously laying ALL the teams problems squarely at the feet of Maddon.

So your hot piss answer is…

A) Made up long distance blame shifting bullshit followed by…

B) “Unless you are ready to claim that (Enter Manager) was 100% responsible for roster construction the last two years then I don’t see how he gets blamed. You have to have a complete roster to win as a manager, with very few exceptions.” This, of course, being an excuse one can use regarding ANY manager since they never have 100% roster control. It’s also an excuse hardly anyone was giving Soth or Ausmus.

C) The past was great, back before all of baseball started doing the same things he did ten years ago…. when he was winning with far from complete rosters…. before he was given a totally stacked roster in Chicago and still almost blew the WS in his own individual quirky style.

D) Followed by a sick burn where you imply I think he was “lucky”…. eight years ago.

I guess I was totally wrong. Joe doesn’t seem old, out of touch and as pathetically hooked on his buddies as Soth was. He’s also totally managed the shit out of this team, warts and all. How could I have missed it? We should totally sign up for more years. All of the bitching about past managers, but finding excuses for the Maddon we demanded, makes total sense to me now. Thanks.

All I asked was, does he seem like the guy you thought you were gonna get when you begged for him? Do you want to keep him through say 2025? If yes, do you have any reasons to keep him that aren’t similar to what his mom would tell me? Because, as far as I can tell, all of these things could have been said of Soth, and even I was in favor of him going away just cause I figured it was time to try something new.

Ha ha. I have given my reasons here many times before and I don’t feel like regurgitating those. Just because you can’t remember discussions that happened on at least several occasions here doesn’t mean I am obliged to keep having them.

You compare him to Soth here, and for the majority of his career as Angels manager Scioscia had much better starting pitching (Colon, Weaver, Wilson, Escobar etc),and a far better bullpen. The last couple of years of Sosh the SP was thin, but he had more than ample opportunity to win us a 2nd WS trophy and failed in the playoffs time and time again. And the last few years of Soth he couldn’t even sniff the playoffs.

So please stop with the Scioscia apologetics while cherry picking the seasons Maddon had flawed rosters to somehow make a terrible attempt to argue that he is a bad manager and that Soth is as good if not better. That plane is not gonna fly.

You still just can’t answer the question can you? So… you’re a yes on extending Maddon? “I’ve given my reasons before” is a candy assed response, especially because I am addressing something YOU JUST TYPED.

And I’m not comparing him to Soth. I am comparing our collective attitude towards Soth to your excuses for Maddon. I asked a question. You came back all Billy Bigballs. But hey, why explain yourself? Just tuck em in and ask the mirror if you’re pretty. I guess the same excuses that didn’t cut it for Soth do cut it for Maddon in your mind because…. reasons.

I mean, you literally could have gotten away with “eh, I’d give him a little more time, see what he can do… can’t think of anyone I’d rather have right now”.

Poop emoji. 💩 Muscles. 💪 . Ha. Ha. Haz.

Don’t be thick. I gave more than enough of a justification in my first comment, that you decided to unceremoniously attack with very weak arguments.

Here it is in a nutshell: Maddon has proven multiple seasons at the Big League level that he is a very good manager. He did not forget how to manage overnight. He wins when given a solid, complete roster, and even sometimes wins with a good but not great roster. Guess what, in his short tenure here with the Angels as the Field Manager he has had very flawed rosters! Do you know what that means ?

If you give the man a solid roster he’ll win. He hasn’t gotten that yet.

Perhaps I have to go step by step like you’re a Third Grader, because that appears to be your emotional level.

So, yes, you do think the excuses that we weren’t accepting for Soth or Ausmus, such as roster construction and past wins, do apply for Maddon and you’re inclined to keep him longer term…. plus you’re Billy Bigballs and some stuff. Got it.

I’m OK with the hippie sticking around and sleeping on the couch for a few more years. Ideally, wait until later in the season, make sure he doesn’t have any Silver Alerts this year

Yeah. He’s not very good. I think early 2010s Maddon is gone. But, as was the case with Soth for a while, I can’t really think of anyone who I think would be sure to do better right now. I sure don’t want to just fire him, but I also don’t want to extend him past 2023 unless we start seeing some actual “Joe Maddon” teams.

Scioscia runs a much funner camp because his mouth was always running. Its days like this i miss him and Dino.

Joe is just cool.

In general, Maddon is the least of the problems with the franchise.

Not to single you out, you’re just the last comment, but I wasn’t asking a political question. I just want to know if people think Joe’s slippin since his late 2000s heyday or if they think we should extend him.

Eh, I think he has his quirks, like Scioscia did, and many managers do. I’m more meh if they extend him, and okay if they bring in someone else. Joe’s Cishek use was Maddoning last year, but that is/was his quirk.

Yeah, hopefully his worst quirk this year is announcing player position movements before anyone’s talked to the player about it and loving Kurt Suzuki

Perry. The perfect GM statement. “We are trying to do stuff because we want to do stuff. We want to get better in the rotation, the bull pen, as hitters and on defense, as well as in the training room, the score board operator, the locker room guys, the ticket sales counter and the nuts guys… they need to be saltier…”

I wish he would just come out and tell the world who he is trying to sign and for how much and who he is trying to trade for and what he’s offering. Sure, opposing GMs would then drink his milkshake, but I’d probably feel better right?

That’s not enough to contend. We’ll probably carry 8 pitchers this year so we need at least 2 more viable arms until the kids are ready . I noticed Quesadilla’s still on the roster I’m wondering if he’s already penciled in as the mop up leftie out of the pen . Also I’m curious what the Angels plans are for Gerardo Reyes He allegedly was going to make the team last year out of ST until his shoulder injury shut him down

Due to Perry’s penchant for inactivity, I’m guessing he sees Bachman in the pen by June. And that might be a beautiful thing. Need some gas.
