LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Canceled Yet?

Is the 2022 MLB schedule canceled yet? Things seem to be heading that way. MLB now signals they are willing to cancel a month of regular season games.

Jeff Passan calls the lockout “Rob Manfred’s Disaster” in this free article on ESPN. Others also seem to be laying this fiasco at the feet of Rob Manfred. Do you think we have seen the end of Major League Baseball as we knew it?

The MLBPA intends to stand up for the rights of any players who choose to go play in a foreign league during the lockout. The player’s union set up a fully staffed training facility for its members in Mesa, Arizona so they can get ready notwithstanding the lockout.

There are no Angels prospects in this Fangraphs list of who they expect to be in their top 100 next year.

Derek Jeter is no longer CEO of the Marlins, nor is he a shareholder going forward.

The Yankees hired Hensley Meulens to be their Assistant Hitting Coach.

Wow. It’s almost like the MLBPA is saying “We want you to make it harder to not overpay us, but also have no limits on overpaying us… and also “the little guy”. We totally care about him too. But really. Pay us, and don’t use computers to figure out if it’s worth it, and also then pay us some more. Otherwise we may go on strike and then you won’t have the opportunity to pay us…. sooo…. take that!?!”

Lost in all the “owners bad locked out” BS is any memory of all the chest thumping the players have been doing for two years. I don’t know why the owners would have not locked out without a CBA, but I do know the players would have waited for a horrible moment and then gone on strike.

I also know they just don’t really have much of a bargaining position. They should just get on with it and continue to suffer for their art.

Bartlett Giamatti, we hardly knew ye.

Rob Manfred: I know it’s a harsh assessment, but I’ll say this: if his older brother was a child pornographer he’d have someone to look up to. (The leniency with the Trash-Holes was my last straw w/him, and it has only gone downhill from there.)

The only ones hurt in this garbage are the fans and the stadium workers. I hate Manfred but he is just a puppet.

We already knew Manfred was ruining baseball. Guess he had to take it up a notch.

I’m serious, a lot of me is very willing to let the season goes by and watch them both lose their ass. Of course employees and stadium workers suffer but with the great resignation era upon us, other work can be found. Not spending time watching 3-4 hour games, will promote a healthier lifestyle. I say this with a beer in my hand.

Whew! What a RELIEF!

With all that’s going on, at least SOMEBODY mentioned the gripping, vital story of the MFY hiring Hensley Meulens as Ass.Hitting Coach.

Hensley has had it with the life of being a butler on the Estate of Mr. Sathington Willoughby, who always called him “Jeeves,” which really chapped Hensely’s hide. “Seemplay NAHstay”, was all Meulens could say about his butlering gig for Willoughby.

(Or is it “buttled gig”?)

Good on him for the career move. So he’s only an Ass. Hitting Coach. Ya gotta start somewhere, and let this be a lesson to any of us who want to change horses midstream: finish peeing first, before you switch horses. Also: if you want to make it as assistant manager at an Applebee’s….well, just LOOK at what Hensley pulled off!

Asked whether Gary Sanchez, who consistently spits tobacky juice at the feet of “Meully” and laffs, Hensely had no comment. “To that query, I demure,” he said to a reporter at the Post.

This whole shebang just turned into a dogfight! Just think!

Just read his Bullcrap, he listened to the fans by wanting 14 teams in the playoffs. What fan wants that; the full season would mean nothing. 10 teams are enough. Pitch Clock in MLB, oh please no. This is more proof positive that the Owners and Manfred are trying to wreck the game. The owners are right about the competitive tax though, the richer teams will change things too much so the Yankees will always win, or is that the Mets? MLB is trying to piss fans off.

This fan wants more playoff teams. The owners are not trying to wreck the game. What is wrong with a pitch clock?

What does more playoff teams do but give a glimmer of hope to every fan who says if their team could just get in “anything could happen!” It cheapens the regular season. It makes divisional play meaningless. it makes *trying* to place well in your division even more meaningless. Might as well just let everyone in the “playoffs” and have a 162 game “playoff” to determine who goes to the World Series.

Yes. This is exactly like letting all the teams in the play offs and now the regular season doesn’t matter…. accept you have to win some regular season games to make the play offs…. and also more teams will try to win a few more regular season games a little while longer. That’s gonna suck. It’s way better when all but 6 teams are worth watching by September 1st.

I’ve been to MiLB games with a pitch clock. It was glorious. Imagine a live baseball game where you don’t have to get drunk to avoid admitting you’re really bored for hour #2 of 3. It’s dope. They actually have to do shit like continuously play baseball at the baseball game.

Galactically Stupid, dumb, moronic, brain-less, short sighted, asinine, greedy, selfless, my way, owners? You decide.

MLB is a business, and of course always has been. The big difference is 20th century owners protected the game itself. Now runners on second to start an inning, 7 inning doubleheaders, telling the blue to send the batter to first instead of throwing the ball to the plate. Allowing pitchers to much time to pitch between pitches, allowing batters to take a hike and circle around the plate. Not demanding better performance from umpires and then believing that Robo blue will be good for the game. No hard slides at Home Plate and 2b seemed like a decent idea.

The game now is out of control with owners that do not know the game. June 1st is my line in the sand and without attending one game this season. I’m on strike and I can outlast them all, funny stuff but true.

The players will lose this war, but not every owner can last a prolonged strike. If I can boycott, then there just might be many more thinking the same.

In all honesty, this whole process has gotten me to reevaluate today’s game. Between shifts, an over focus on strikeouts and extreme sabermetrics, I’m not as in love with it as I used to be. It also costs around 10x what it used to. Attending a game in decent seats with my family of 4 with food and a couple beers is now at least a $750 night. I cannot be alone in feeling I’ve got better ways to spend that money than on a sport that cares nothing for its fans.

it seems the biggest chunk of any revenue for them that matters is Playoff games.
So its a repeat of 2020 – a 60 game sprint and then the Playoffs

Buttercupped again. Oh well.

I had a blast at the Dirtbags game last weekend. Might just catch another college game this weekend. Spending time at the ballpark with family and friends is what matters.

Thing is, I might find I like that more. MLB is giving me an opportunity to find other pastimes. Not smart on their part.

Already looking at going on Sunday. I work about a mile from UC Irvine and that ballpark looks nice.

My son is 4. As long as we’re together, I don’t care which ballpark it is. Ice cream just tastes better at a ballpark and his smile is just as big at Blair as at the Big A.

from Mike Axisa

It should be noted the length of the season, how players are paid, and the schedule itself are workplace conditions subject to bargaining between MLB and the MLBPA. Manfred does not get to unilaterally declare players will not be paid for games missed. In 2020, the union gave Manfred that power under their March Agreement amid the pandemic, but that was a one-time move.

Plenty of relievers I would make a run at. No must-haves but some guys to take a flyer on; Jimmy Nelson, Hand, Boxberger, Strahm or a bit more AAV with Diekman and Tepera. No sure-things are left.
