LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Thanksgiving Eve

Good morning Angels fans, how are you today? Have some links why don’t you?

Angels News

After getting a new reliever, Perry has stated that this won’t replace Raisel and that he is still in talks with him.

Shohei Ohtani is the ALL MLB DH! These “All X” things have confused me forever.

BOOM!
Hey D-Cell made it too!

Gausman is also on Perry’s radar and he also wants to get a deal done soon. Black Friday this please!

Around Baseball

Steven Matz has an offer from the Angels (amongst others) and is looking to sign this week! Aaaaaaand he chose St. Louis. Darn.

The Rays actually paid to keep their star player around for once. It was not cheap at all. This is so unlike them that the contract equals their budget the last 4 years combined.

White Sox get Graveman. Free agency isn’t dead yet after all.

Baltimore shopping Means. He struggled in the second half, may be cheaper than many realize.

Reds shopping Sonny Gray. He is actually available, unlike their other pitchers.

Oh yeah, the ALL MLB team has been revealed. Ohtani is on there twice!

2 Way Shohei

Remember Perry wasn’t very good at whatever secret analytics voo doo that the Rays, As, Dodgers and now Giants implore in their pitchers. The Angels are not in the business of taking pitchers who are kind of average results and making them great. So I wouldn’t cry over Delscafini, Ray or Gausman. Perry has to realize his limitations and just get guys who can pitch it regardless of the franchise they’re a part of. We saw that in his atrocious handling of the “run prevention” priority he mentioned last offseason.

Cobb worked out a bit because of the Madden connection and left over Rays magic. Syndergaard can throw so they’re gambling on health and some minor tweaks as he will be back to ace-ish performance.

On the trade market they need guys who know how to pitch already. There’s only so much development this org can do. I say he just goes all in on developing the pitchers in the minors and not trying to pretend to be the Giants.

As far as the offense, it’s pretty clear Perry thinks Rendon and Trout will be healthy. Throw in Ohtani and Walsh adjusted to 162 season, that really should be the core of your offense. Is it really necessary to add another starting bat? Marsh and Fletch should really be working on OBP and Adell continue to work at on his . He does need to find someone that can field the SS position and a pinch hit bat off the bench.

I agree with the main idea you put out here. I don’t think we need more offense and shouldn’t spend all that much on it. I am also all for buying starters for now and focusing on developing the young arms right… though this would mean the dreaded “short term pitcher deal”.

I do disagree with the idea that the Angel’s can’t develop anyone at the MLB level. I think they need to pick a pitching coach, any pitching coach, and surround him with guys, maybe like the Driveline guy we hired and some other guys from other orgs who focus on pitching, and then bring in MLB pitchers they have a clear plan for.

Cobb wasn’t an accident. He spent years sucking in Baltimore post Rays magic. Ohtani, who’s abilities are similar to Thors, could have been a disaster and wasn’t. Suarez, Sandoval even Barria to an extent. MLB level tweeking can be done and they might as well try it, but not rely on it completely.

Cobb claims that Driveline helped reestablish his fastball last offseason which led to his resurgence with the Angels. Even Ohtani admitted in other interviews that he went there for instruction and training last offseason ( although he would not give any other specifics) . Maybe the new driveline guy worked with these guy before he came on board with the Angels?

We have lots of offense if we’re healthy. I’ll be very satisfied with defense from SS and/or catcher.

I grew up with the Mets of the 60s and that’s still a great model. Bud Harrelson wasn’t a potent force at the plate but he could field. That was good enough for a team that had solid pitching. Seaver, Koosman, Gentry, with Ryan in the pen. You know that story.

So if we end up with this new guy at short but spend the big money on pitching we’ll be well off. After all, we’ve been crying about pitching for years.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I liked having a strong bench last year. I just didn’t like having it play 1/2 our total innings or what ever it had to cover. It looks like we’ll have a pretty strong bench this year too, depending on who we get to catch. That’s nice.

I’m not actually all that worried about Ol’ Cheap n Evil not signing any pitchers to long term deals. Sure, that may have been intentional back when he still had to get Weaver, Wilson, Burnett, Street etc off his books while all our young arms like Heaney, Richards and Skaggs failed to become anything, but do any of the guys writing this think Arte was like “Corbin, Wheeler, Cole, Bauer…. offer them one year contracts, I’m sure those will be hard to resist. Wait, what do you mean Strausburg wants more than one year!?!”

You’d think if I were, you know, a professional journalist with many laminated items in my desk, I’d remember that I had typed sentences like “The Angels are in on…..” in the past, but nope, apparently real professionals don’t work that way.

It’s hard to tell if something is sarcasm. Strong bench (Lagares, Suzuki, Wong, Mayfield) might be a joke. I’m not sure.

Well, Fangraphs has it as Upton, Gosselin, Mayfield and Thaiss. We have Rengifo/Velasquez as options intead of the Captain (if you like, or the Plumber, I suppose). Ward is also listed in AAA.

That seems better than last year, right? Is it ‘pretty strong’ – I don’t know – but even as is it is an improvement.

(This assumes, per Fangraphs, that Wade is our starting SS.)

Cowboy26

Fangraphs also has our starting shortstop as Tyler Wade when I thought his strength was as a super utility guy?

I agree. I am hoping that SS is a camp competition, and that they invite a few vets on minor league deals with a hope for a contract.

That said, even this group seems better than the 2B competition that Giovatella ‘won’ a few years ago – so still think we are in a better spot.

Cowboy26

I’m more concerned about the defense at the SS position than the lack of offense. Neither of our recent additions ( Wade or Velasquez) are well liked at short through published defensive metrics. Nor did Capt Jack for that matter. The only good defensive numbers (small sample size alerts) were unfortunately from Rengifo

No defensively minded OF? That is not good….

gitchogritchoffmypettis

You gotta remember that you just experienced the misery of an entire season of bench. If our starters were mostly intact last year a bench of Lugares, Suzuki, Gosselin, Mayfield, Ward and Rengifo would have been pretty strong. Problem is that that bench is meant to cover 300-500 innings in total, not 400 total games.

2002 – I’d enjoy a little insight into your life. Is there anything but bitterness? Are there happy times at all? From all of these angry posts, I picture you almost like the unibomber – in a little dark space with no windows and the light of images on your computer projected onto your sunken eyes. Do you sleep? Do you dream anything but angry things? On Thanksgiving Eve why not change it up a bit and tell us what you are thankful for – not to mention give yourself a break from all the bile. In the big scheme of things, this is just baseball. It’s unhealthy to be so single and angrily focused.

Stick to the topic PLZ.
So Matz, DeSclafani both basically signed for half of what we’re paying Syndergard………Un-fucking believable. Yep we have a 75 yr old GM who also happens to be a billionaire. Heck we could signed both of these guys and been done already. This is just damm stupid. I was actually thinking that these guys were gonna cost about $20M a year each and both made 29 and 30 starts respectively in 2021.. Arte go try to join Jeff and Richard and start a space exploration company…..Good Gawd!!

If we get Chris Bassitt, Robbie Ray, Kevin Gausman or trade for Luis Castillo then all my tears will all go away. Not holding my breath however, because we’re the Anjels and Arthur owns his fiefdom. Go Packy in 2022!!!

Arte is asset rich and cash poor. Like it or not, Arte does not set the Angels budget based on his personal wealth, but on the cash generated by the ball club. Wail, gnash teeth, and post pictures all you want, it’s not going to change.

The only owner I can remember who set payroll like Ahab chasing a whale is Mike Illich before he died and former Rangers owner Tom Hicks. Everyone else seems to use revenue generated by their team. It’s almost like it a business or something and they want to make money. Crazy. Evil.

It’s why I think so many CtPG people should just suck it up and become Doyers fans. Sure, there are ways to win with the money the Angels have, but to win the way some people want to, where you just buy insurance (a huge farm) and also just buy your way out of bad contracts (Bauer/Max) you have to be DoyYankSux. Some people just need to embrace their own weakness, love themselves, and go buy a blue hat. I have accepted the fact that the Angels, Mets, and Phillies are similar teams who will likely have similar track records.

Kind of fascinating that you seem to have no issue searching for and finding positivity regarding the unibomber, but when it comes to a baseball team that exists solely for entertainment, you’re the epitome of negative day after day after day.

Matz would not move the needle for me. I’d take Cobb and a few others ahead of Matz. Truthfully, I’m having difficulty seeing the Angels signing any starter for more than 2 to 3-years. Hell, maybe 2-years is the max length. Stroman wants 4 to 5-years, forget it fans, I don’t see him coming here. I’m good with that.

I don’t think we’d want Stroman on a 5 year deal. A 4 year deal is pushing it. I could be wrong but I see his peripherals taking a nose dive by his age 34 and 35 season

“We want to look for opportunities,” Eppler said. “In my dialogue with Steve and with Sandy [Alderson], it’s evident that we’re going to have some resources behind us. So I don’t think anything eliminates itself at the outset here.”

Appears he might not have to use his dumpster-diving skills(?) as much with an owner who likely wont demand a trade for a BIG BAT! after striking out on whomever it was that gave him a boner. Then had a tantrum when said boner signed elsewhere after the “take it or leave it” offer.

This reminds me of all the inaugurals from way back in the day I’ve read about that sound like they were absolute mayhem unleashed. They used to basically just cook a bunch of food outdoors, a huge pile of people got drunk, and they all just descended on the White House and the Capitol and had a huge mess of a party like in a John Hughs film. No one even tried to stop it. Andrew Jackson’s inaugural sounds like it was full on Barter Town.

The 20th Amendment was meant to shorten the lame duck months of a Presidency, but one of it’s pleasant side effects for politicians is it moved everything to the dead of winter and helped tamp down the wildness of the partying that happened when it was in early March…. in theory.
