Bullpen game goes exactly as expected, Padres defeat Angels

Padres 8, Angels 5

I suppose there’s a reason that teams don’t just trot out bullpens every single day. It’s not exactly the best pitchers on the team who will be showcasing their talents on the mound when you have to resort to a bullpen game.

A combination of Mike Mayers, Sam Selman, and Jake Petricka combined to allow the Padres to score eight runs in the bottom of the second, and unsurprisingly the Angels could not recover. Petricka, in particular, threw sixteen balls and eight strikes, walking three and allowing one hit in just 1/3 of an inning.

Juan Lagares and Jo Adell each homered, but obviously it was not enough against that Padres second inning blitz. Shohei Ohtani did not appear.

a slanted pro-San Diego writeup included this:

“At one point, San Diego hitters worked four consecutive walks, including three that plated runs with the bases loaded.”

Worked? No, not really.

Hey someone was needed to hold a bat and stand there until ball 4 was issued. That takes effort.

True, couple of multi-run homers appeared to mark it close but this game was lost when the lineup cards were exchanged. Joe planned in a loss. That run of Angel pitchers is a loser 9 times out of 10.

I thought the same thing myself.

The only way Joe manages the game this way is to lose.

Especially with inserting Petricka in the second Inning.

Any update on Detmers? Or is this a viral TJS?

Looks like he is back with the team, but having been off since Aug 21, might need a few days to be in pitching shape (especially if we want him starting).

Detmers had covid? I was shuddering just watching him chewing his fingernails in the dugout last night. Don’t people know that hands / fingers into nose, mouth, eyes is the most effective way to spread germs?

Germs? He’s now shedding the Delta Variant antibodies. If anything his teammates should be flocking to sit next to him on the bench to get into his spray path

Adell’s hitting over the last 15-20 games has vastly improved.

In addition to a triple, Marsh just missed hitting an HR too.

After giving up 8 the Angels did make it interesting while riding the tank.

they didn’t quit though, so that’s good. Petricka is, unfortunately, not good. And he’s old and has been around and we should not have him on our team in 2022. If we do then it’s our own fault. And by “we” I mean Perry.

Rather try out journeymen now than in camp or next year.

It is not excusable.
