Angels offense comes to life, ends losing streak against Padres

Angels 10, Padres 2

UFC star Francis Ngannou visited Angel Stadium Saturday afternoon. But in the game that followed, it was indeed the Angels offense that did the heavy hitting, carrying the team for what seems like the first time in forever.

The Angels had a Major League starter on the mound Saturday in José Suarez, but it did not seem to matter. Suarez didn’t get out of the fourth inning, and although Joe Maddon seemed to have a relatively quick hook, at this level, the starter cannot be putting the manager in situations like that. Lately, the starting pitching has been absolutely atrocious.

But it didn’t matter tonight, for once. The Angels scored in five straight innings, putting up a ten-spot as they ran rampant over the dregs of the Padres pen.

First, Jared Walsh and Jack Mayfield bopped homers.

Walsh would also crack a run-scoring double and single to cap off his impressive three-hit, 3 RBI night. Shohei Ohtani stole his 20th base, giving him a 40-20 season, and Jack Mayfield, David Fletcher, and Brandon Marsh (!!) also added multi-hit games in addition to Walsh.

Jo Adell threw a guy out.

I think it’s the equivalent to 99 MPH! Ha!

Adell, Sho, Trout, Marsh and Goose…….should create more runs.
If it doesn’t, give them a Baton and let them be a relay team.

She is leaving for FS1 to play second fiddle to the sports talk show hosts? Such a meh job. Hope it was not something the Angels initiated.

Adell’s throw a thing of beauty @ over 91 MPH.

Reminds me of Vladdy;s and Ichiro’s frozen rope throws from right to third to nail a runner.

We should get these two guys and make the PO’s in 2022!!! 💪 💪
Marcus Semien at SS, Avasail Garcia in RF and GOAT in CF and Bubba in LF
Garcia has a cannon ( of course he’s big dude and fast for his size ).

Nope keep Marsh in LF and trade Adell.
These two guys will cost the same as one Trout, Pujols or Rendon.
Forget about hoping the owner will pay for pitching because he won’t…….y’all know it and I know it. Hopefully we can get a good BP arm for Adell and maybe Reid Detmers will break out next year.

Yeah and I’d like the whole AL All Star starting lineup…….Do you actually think before you type? Reggie Jackson has 5 WS rings and was never a gold glover and neither was Manny Ramirez with Boston who has 2, is JD Martinez a good defensive OF?. How good a player was Scott Spezio who was our 1B on the 2002 WS team? BR says he averaged .255 15hr’s and just 70rbi’s during his 12 yr career. Semien’s FP according to BR is in the mid 980’s this year…….this ain’t 2016 or 2015 anymore and his improvement on defense is huge since 2018 when the A’s started their playoff run. The outfield defense was a clown show with Taylor Ward, Jered Walsh, Juan Lagares, Luis Rengifo and yes J-Up still sucks out in LF and will continue to be a bane to our team payroll until he isn’t. I love this statistic…….in 2019 the KC Royals were the second best fielding team in MLB second to only the St Louis Cardinals and lost 103 games….LOL!!!
Jose Iglesias sucks this year in the field and he’s a lot worse than Semien too, maybe he’s like Upton who can’t field anymore. Outfielders who are prone to offensive regression? LOL ( like Upton who’s raking in $21M from us! ).

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  2002heaven

I ACTUALLY AGREE WITH 2002! Semien’s developed into a solid SS and he can hit. If we could get a pile of pitching and him I’d be happy. I just don’t think we can.

Cowboy26
Legend

So because of Semien’s recent play in 2021 where he has only started 14 games at shortstop we can conclude that he has now developed into a solid option there? His 2020 defensive metrics were abysmal and 2019 numbers wasn’t exactly stellar-At least not to the level that PTP has claimed that the team is looking for. Even utilizing the Lyle Spencer quality grade in-person eye test for the recent Angels Blue Jays double header he did not look that comfortable at 2B (although he played slightly better on the road than he did at home)

I would much rather the Angels sign Javy to a 1 year pillow contract since he would be motivated to rebuild his value and despite a down year at the plate his defense really hasn’t suffered , Or maybe even Chris Taylor. His defensive numbers at SS or still very good he’s solid at the plate and gives us versatility at other positions.

Rtot (-1) Rtot/year (0) those are kind of average don’t you think?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I think you mistake the term solid for super… or strident… or something. I didn’t say he’s good, he’s just solid, not a major liability, like a -1 Rtot.

I’d be fine with Baez too. The thing is Semein’s gonna have had 2 seasons over 6 WAR out of the last three after this year. Baez is also still a pretty good player. I know a single reporter said maybe it’s an option, but I’m not so sure BAez will sign a one year deal and Semein’s not coming cheap either.

So meh. Sign me Raisel and two other solid pitchers and I’ll take Jonthan Villar or Freddy Galvis.

I am ok with an 2022 outfield of Trout, Adell, Marsh, and J-Up.

My concern is with SS and back-up catcher. Not comfortable with Jose Inglesias’ defense. Maybe Taylor Ward can back-up Max Stassi and play an occasion OF position. It sucks he got sent down and then got injured.

The biggest issue is the pitching. Esp the bullpen.

I’m not cool with J-Up at all, he’s been a disaster and lets just say he was probably part of the reason for why Perry’s here now. I’d like to see us go after Garcia or Schwarber who also is having a good year in WAS/BOS because right now were down to just Walsh and Ohtani for power and run production and that’s it.

In no universe do we pay an additional pile of money for a 4th OF. If we have Adell, Marsh and Trout, J-up can ride the pine to earn his 21M.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

But what if I just don’t like Upton at all? THEN can we just release him and pay him to crush the universe on some other team? Added bonus, then you can forget all about how I demanded we cut Upton and listen to me complain about how PTP cut Upton and now he’s killing it in Cleveland or what ever.

If we could get those two guys AND a gaggle of pitchers and a back up catcher I’d be fine with it. They’re good players and probably won’t be TOO expensive. Garcia though…. he’s streaky AF, like Upton streaky.

Nice win, but this continuing problem with the starter not going at least 6 innings is disturbing. Unless the new CBA calls out for a 65 man roster, with 35 active, then you can probably stick a fork in the 2022 season too. You can’t put that much load on a bullpen throughout the season and expect good things to happen.

What is your point? A guy in his 5th MLB season is having a breakout year. Well done him.

I guess call Dipoto and tell him what a lousy job he did? And call Dusty Baker and give him credit (Nick Krall, as you note, didn’t draft Mahle).

I think we had Mahle’s brother in our system once. He looked good for a bit, fell hard, then disappeared, iirc. No way to tell how young(ish) pitchers (actually, pitchers generally) might turn out (I speak as someone who had high hopes gor Felix Pena once). One should always have a surplus of young pitching, to mix and match if necessary.

Almost like he was a top 10 draft pick, with a reputation for a great glove, plus arm, and whose only (supposed) weaknesses were with the bat. Hmm.

Yup. He was a solid OF before last year when he got his brain lit on fire. I figured he’d be fine out there, I am more worried about him ending up with a 30% K rate in the MLB.

Brandon Marsh has now played 40 Big league games which is of course one quarter of the season . In his first 20 games he hit..143/.229/.206 with In his last 20 games including last night he slashed an incredible .409/.466/.576. His K rate per AB has actually increased 37% to 41% (although there have been slight improvements in the last 10 games) and I would like to see him steal more bases ( he has 3 SB in 4 Attempts)

Also right now Marshy has averaged 4.16 pitches per plate appearances which ties him with teammate Shohei Ohtani who is 17th highest in the league. Conversely Fletch is only averaging 3.22 pitches per PA. The League leader is Matt Olson at 4.30. The league average is 3.91 and as a team the Angels rank near the bottom at 26th averaging an anemic 3.80 pitches per Plate Appearance.

So I think Marsh could definitely he could be our answer at leadoff.Maybe starting off in a platoon role . He would be dropped down in the lineup against tough lefties as he continues to grow into the role.

Interesting idea and makes sense.

Marsh looks to be the best alternative leading, better than Fletch, Sho, or J-Up.

It would be interesting to see how Marsh adjusts to the extra pressure of leading-off with such limited MLB experience.

I have a feeling he’ll do fine.

Only one way to find out.

There will be injuries but Upton as depth is not bad and yes please invest money in pitching instead of a expensive SS.
I hope that draft of 20 pitchers is a sign that finally Arte has consented spending on pitching.

YES! Mid-Tier SS. Bench of Upton, backup C, some inexpensive (hopefully from our farm) IF.

All the rest of the money on getting 1-2 starting pitchers and shoring up the pen.
