Huge Angels Comeback Leads to 13-10 Win

Patrick Sandoval has done everything to earn a spot in the 2022 Angels rotation. Unfortunately he was placed on the IL today and our old, reliable bullpen was tasked with going 9 innings. It went as well as expected.

Jose Quintana, who started the year in the rotation, was given the start and promptly gave up two runs in the first.

The Angels matched those two runs in the second to make the score 2-2. The key hit that inning was Brandon Marsh’s first big league triple.

Then the Slegers really hit the fan. All 6 foot 10 of him just imploded, leaving the Angels in a huge early hole at 7-2. Miguel Cabrera had the biggest knock, a bases loaded double that put him closer to hit #3000.

It wouldn’t get any better Slegers helped the Tigers give more fans souvenirs and left down 10-2.

But just when the day looked to be done, there was a Halo Blitz. 6 runs scored in the top of the 6th with walks and hits galore. Once again Brandon Marsh came through with a big hit. That made two triples in the game for Marsh.

After 6 innings it was 10-8 Tigers. Detroit’s Kyle Funkhouser (love that name) was basically their Slegers today and left with a tenuous lead and 2 runners on in the top of the 7th.

Jared Walsh has been scuffling lately but he cashed in Ohtani on his second hit of the game (to go along with 2 walks) to make it 10-9 Tigers.

However, the ice cold Just Upton made the third out for the second inning in a row and the rally was over. Those two plate appearances stranded 5 base runners.

Still, the momentum was all on the Angels side. Mike Mayers came in and pitched a dominant, clean 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th. Then after a walk to Brandon Marsh, Max Stassi stepped to the plate and gave the Angels their first lead of the day.

A Shohei Ohtani sac fly punched in Jose Iglesias to stretch the lead to 2, then Goose put the dagger in Detroit with this bomb.

Austin Warren came on to pitch the 8th and 9th, securing his first MLB save with 2 shutout innings.

What a game! The largest road deficit overcome in team history.

They invented Tri-Tip… that’s pretty dope. It also is (or at least was) the car theft capital of Cali. Also, many squat and blocky women with painted on eyebrows. Why not love Santa Maria?

I think the car theft capital of California is my block in San Francisco where my catalytic converter was stolen 3 times in 5 months, at $3000 a pop.

I’m not a big fan of his home run calls, little too amped up but can deal with it. He got it from some Italian lady who would express a superlative moment by saying…..Santa Maria!”

Santeria is Caribbean, combining elements of African religions with those of Catholicism. So there is some relation to “Santa Maria,” or “Sainte Marie,” I suppose. 😉

The line is “Mongo! Santamaria!” which happens to be the name of a very cool Cuban jazz drummer. Excellent obscure pun.

Sure, we came back and swept the Tigers. Trouble is, when you’re as smart, muscular, successful and hung as I am you scoff at wins like this. Why were we behind to the Tigers in the first place? Beyond that, I only credit the Angels with 1.5 wins this series. Real man teams only count victories against >.500 teams. Also, our bullpen. Nuff said cause my time is too valuable and coffee is for closers. When is this team gonna elevate and evolve to synergize and zazzify so I can proudly blast their games in my Ferrari Testarossa? I can’t wear my diamond encrusted Angels hat and matching white rhino leather Affliction t-shirt in public until I’m sure A’ss fans can’t talk shit to me in their disgusting Old Navy clothes.

Yeah, Game 6 really sucked. The Spiezio 3 run HR was boring, so was the Glaus double giving us the lead.

I know we’re all thinking it, but I’ll go ahead and just put it out there. Do we really need that Trout guy back next year if we have Phil Gosselin on our team? I mean, Trout’s obviously done, and his contract will keep us from signing greats like Marcus Stroman. What do you think we’d have to do to dump him on some other team?

Mike Mayers is having a solid August. Used less and the results are better. His season stats are a little misleading due to May and the amount of usage. He’s bounced back and looking more reliable. With him, Cichek & Warren, the backend has improved and looking good in the last 30 days.

Cowboy26

Mayers would have even a better ERA if we don’t use him at all.

Um look at his August numbers. He was good in April and had a nice June. Also, his WAR is on the upswing. I think he was overused which is why his value and effectiveness is misleading.

It’s definitely audition time right now for the pen as to who stays and who goes. I think every arm is under the spotlight and not safe. Rasiel is talented and is welcomed back but salary demands may send him out.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

There are some teams like the Yankees and Doyers that could actually use him and drop a ton of money on him…. Red Sux too. We’ll have to see what’s up. Honestly, I think the sassy way the Angels bench pile is fighting out the end of the season with some excitement may help us keep Raisel better than if we just whimpered out.

Well it was a Great Game and the rush was fun. This team as it stands is like a piece of chocolate. When running on all 8 it cannot be stopped. Q and Slegers get bus tickets out of town, thanks for the memories.

So happy for Marsh too. I very much like his fielding. Hope to see Trouty in RF soon. He has the arm for assists at 2b and holding runners at 3b too.

Bring on the Cleveland “Whatevers”.

Look at the offensive numbers vs those teams in the losses. Pitching gets behind and the Halos just can’t muster any offense. Maybe it is due to guys being out, and some pitchers being overmatched. But if they don’t dig themselves into much too much of a hole early, and Angels have more quality at-bats, I could see a slight improvement. Based on the eye test, the offense in the AL West from Hou, Oak, and Sea seems to overmatch Angels’ pitching. And their starters and bullpens are more reliable. Granted you have the young guys and subs playing on the Angels’ side, therefore their starters can stay in the game longer due to less quality AB’s. Sandoval and Cobb made improvements,s which allowed them to stay in the game longer, but other guys struggle 5inning and beyond. No need to mention Ohtani because well he’s just Ohtani. I do hope we see more of Detmers and he continues to improve. With Marsh and Adell improving, maybe the Halos can win some series vs AL West opponents. That’ll tell me what this team is maybe of this year and what could be next year.

it was mentioned somewhere that this equals the biggest comeback in our history and that the previous one was 1986 so…was that the 15-14 (or 14-13, I forget exactly) game? 13-12, Schofield’s HR. Yes, just looked it up. That was a great one!

Wow, what a comeback. There was no way I could stay awake to finish that game especially how it looked early on. I have a love/hate relationship with night shift. Woke up to find they pulled it off.

Fortunately I was able to watch much of it on MLBTV replay. It’s really nice to see the kids are really starting the bring something to the table.

Oh holy crap, caught the score on my way to the doctor’s, figured meh, this sucks.
After doctor visit got the game broadcast again and they were coming back. Got home in time for the Stassi blast. I’m guessing we won’t hear too much more about Marsh going to SLC for some seasoning.
