Detmers picks up first Halos win over Astros

Angels 3, Astros 1

Reid Detmers had the best start of his young Major League career, throwing six innings of one-run ball, and the Angels avoided the sweep Sunday afternoon.

According to the Baseball Savant pitch chart, Detmers was still fairly wild with his pitching, missing up with breaking balls at times, but he only allowed the one solo shot to Michael Brantley en route to his first win.

The Angels manufactured runs in the fifth and sixth, and Phil Gosselin hit an insurance home run in the eighth to secure the victory. Raisel Iglesias nabbed the four-out save, striking out Altuve with the tying run on second to end it.

Umpire Mark Ripperger’s strike zone was fairly big against both teams, and while Angels like Shohei Ohtani (two hits, two strikeouts), got hosed, the Astros also had a few balls called strikes against them in the ninth as they were trying to stage their comeback.

Brandon Marsh had another two-hit game.

Next, the Angels travel to New York for a makeup game then continue a road trip through Detroit, Cleveland, and Baltimore.

Quality costs.

He deserves it too. He has a WHIP of 0.896 !

That is lower than Max Scherzer, Brandon Woodruf and Gerrit Cole!

He’s probably the backup…..
Am I supposed hate him now that he’s a Giant? The Giants play way better defense than us FYI. Go to BRef and see for yourself.

Still got that sub .700 OPS? Still getting paid 19 million for 2021-23? And where were you going to play him, second second base? Are you really at the point that you are off cherry picking players drafted by teams other than the Angels to complain about and you’re holding up single games by a player as the type of on the spectrum porn that gets your nips hard now? We beg you oh mighty mouth breather, bring back Pete Alonso! Then go back to your corner, sit down, rock back and forth, drink your Capri Sun and eat your orange slices.

Shame on you. Brando was f-ing brilliant!

His performance in “Streetcar” was amazing.

It is a great movie. Nevertheless, Brando had a thing for over acting at times.

had a “thing?” Not sure if you understand what great acting is.

Emoting does not in and of itself equate to “over acting.” It depends on what the role/character call for…. Stanley Kowalski was a highly emotional whirlwind. That was the character.

Not all of Brando’s roles were like that. Check out “Last Tango in Paris” as an example of some alternatingly very subtle and at times passionate acting, both brilliant. Likewise you can check out “On the Waterfront” or a lesser know film called “The Men” in which Brando plays a war veteran. Both were very subtle.

I’ve seen Last Tango and On the Waterfront. Both great. Please don’t think I’m not a Brando fan, I am. I never said he over acted all the time. All in all though, my joke has now been sufficiently sunk.

Damm, do I hate the Asstros. Used to kind of like them when they first started digging out of the tanking hole, but now they rot in the same rathole of disgust reserved for the Sux and the Skankees. I even like the Dodgers better. Bastards. Good job today by a lot of people, Goose, Detmers, D-Cell. Adell’s catch last night in left was bleeding outstanding.

Not expecting to see Trout back this year at all. No reason to play in a meaningless September. Just heal up. I want to see this fully operational Death Star (if the pitching works out) next season.

Well, other than that May 3-19 stretch of games this was probably our toughest stretch so far and we went 8&10. Could have been worse, especially since those Doyers games we were putting out a SLC line up. The only reason I can find for wanting Trout back is the Sept 7-23 stretch where we go Padres, Astros, White Sox, A’s, Astros. By then it will be interesting to see what guys like Detmers and Bubba Gump are going and if Trout can make a difference, etc. It’s August 15. We have been playing 2 months with guys like Goose and Mayfield as line up staples. We are one game under .500.

Huzzah for the kidz getting better. We could really stand for Upton to go on one of his John Wick killing sprees right about now… or starting Sept 7.

I’m pulling for Upton taking on a Houdini character and disappear. Goose in left until Trout gets back. Let’s go.

Hey, I’ve been saying since March that I will be happy as a clam with a .500 record, a good draft, and some development from the kids. We may get all of that while Bundy sucks and the team misses Walsh, Upton, Trout and Rendon for long periods? Heck yeah I’ll take that.

Let see we’re 9-1/2 games back with 43 games to play and we would first have to leap frog 3 other teams. Considering we’re not chasing the 64 Phillies or the 69 Cubs or even the 95 Angels, you guys are nutz. Right Coach?

Unless the Angels just get INSANE hot September is going to be brutal. It could be highly developmental though. If guys like Marsh, Adell, Warren, Quesadilla, Suarez, Sandoval, Detmers and Barria come out of that looking half good I will be greatly encouraged about 2022.

We have to have a good off-season since we need to replace so many players who are on 1 year deals.

Cowboy26

So heres a list of the key free agents for us next year*:

Jose Iglesias
Kurt Suzuki
Alex Cobb
Jose Quintana
Dylan Bundy
Raisel Iglesias
Steve Chishek
Juan Lagares
Dexter Fowler

*Note: Gosselin, Junior Guerra, Jame Hoyt and Mike Mayers can be become free agents in 2022 if they are not tendered contracts thru arbitration.

Other than D cell ( a must re-sign) and Cobb (he has already indicated a willingness to return) I’m not sure any other players on that list interest me.

Thanks for digging that up. It is quite useful.

I agree, I wouldn’t be a happy camper if we just resigned everyone. However, that list also represents some positions that need to be filled.

I am curious (and this should be a group think, probably). Who do we target for:
Backup Catcher
Short
4th OF
and we should add a starter (or two) and some bullpen pieces.

It is a shorter shopping list than in the past. It is also just a different problem than, say, the Astros have been dealing with (which of our expensive soon to be FA can we afford to sign – see Springer and now Correa).

OF: Trout Adell Marsh Upton, in no particular order, Taylor Ward, that’s 5 right there.

Fair enough – with all the talk (here) about Upton being a short lived solution, I might have jumped the gun.

So, 5th OF – and you suggest Ward. Could do (cheapest, easiest option out there). Might even consider him a 3rd catcher (one can dream). Is it the best option?

In any case, part of the equation is filling out the bench. Upton, IF, Catcher, and ?? (provided we keep the same number in the pen).

As matthias points out, it’s not so much do we want to retain them (for the most part, no) its that we have to have players to fill those slots. Hopefully we’ll find that some of our kids can do the job.

I’m expecting we’ll write some “if I were Perry” articles mentioning who we want and he’ll do the usual, signing some no names. Maybe the next batch will be better.

Depending upon how Detmers and Barria do the rest of the way and in the Spring I am not sure I’d want Cobb either.

After Raisel of course I would like to see Jose Churches back and Goose is a nice bench piece who would be a very good pinch-hitter in late inning clutch situations.

I don’t think you can predict these outcomes just based upon present performance. There are swings in MLB; cold teams become hot etc.

So, case in point is Baltimore. They have lost what, 11 straight? We could be catching them at the worst time just as they have turned it around and are now hot. They are due to win some games. It is not as if they are totally devoid of talent.

I would not be shocked if the Orioles win that series in Baltimore coming up.
