For the final game vs the Dodgers this year, it was Reid Detmers vs Walker Buehler. This war not a fair outing at all. Really the only hope the Angels had was that they could use a Cy rookie against a team for once. That did not happen. At all. Reid Detmers in his second start went just like his first. He gets Houston next. Joy.
Recap
Trial by Fire Part 2
The Angels got a 2 out walk but that was it. Reid Detmers now had to go out there vs the Dodgers. It did not go well in the first. Back to back to back hits, a high throw on a groundball, 2 stolen bases, and a walk resulted in only 2 runs. It really could have been much, much worse. 2-0 Dodgers after 1.
Brandon Marsh got the first hit for the Angels. Reid Detmers walked, but the offense failed to score. Detmers almost got out of it in the 2nd without more damage but a groundball got by 3 defenders to bring in a third run. Then Albert Pujols hit a pinch hit 2 run home run. 5-0 Dodgers after 2.
Angels did not get shut out as Gosselin doubled in Fletcher in the third. Detmers finally had himself a clean inning in the third. 5-1 Dodgers after 3.
Despite the first two getting on, the Angels failed to get a run across. Detmers was still in there and got through the 4th no problem. Still 5-1 Dodgers.
The Angels went down quietly in the 5th vs the Dodgers ace. Despite a speedy Turner on the bases again, Reid Detmers made it through 5 innings. Still 5-1 Dodgers.
6th inning came and Upton pinch hit for Detmers with one on. He fouled out to end the inning. Detmers went 5 innings, 5 runs allowed, including a home run to Pujols.
Bullpen game
Now the bullpen had to come in for the 6th. Who would get the ball first? Why thy best name in gut Angels system, Packy Naughton! He was called up a few days ago and made his MLB debut today! After a bloop single, he put down the next two in order. Then someone ran onto the feild. It threw him for a loop and he allowed a ground ball to get through. 6-1 Dodgers after 6.
Buehler was out of the game. Not that it mattered surf this offense. They went down in order in the seventh. Mayers had the bottom of the inning, and he gave up a 2 run home run. 8-1 Dodgers after 7.
Runners got on in the 8th, and actually got a run across with an Adell double. Ohtani pinch hit walked to load the bases for Mayfield, who grounded out to the pitcher. Selman came into pitch next and Ohtani went into the outfield. He didn’t allow more damage and it was 8-2 Dodgers heading into the 9th.
Fletcher grounded out. Eaton grounded out. Stassi struck out. The Angels are now back to .500.
Upcoming
After a day off tomorrow, the Angels get a double header Tuesday vs Toronto. It’s a part of a 4 game series vs the Blue Jays. Oh and Houston after that. Next week is not going to be pretty. Please drink responsibly.
*are* we doing better than last year? I’d say definitely so. Taking into consideration the injuries we’re at 56-56. At our win/loss rate of 2020 we’d now be 49-63 and that’s rounding up (48.53 wins…but you can’t have .53 so we’ll call it 49 wins).
And if we compare it to our 2019, at that rate we’d be 50-62.
We have a tough stretch coming up but Ohtani will be hitting and that should help.
Who knows, maybe even Walsh could avoid TJS and play sometime this month, that will also help.
Take away the Ohtani explosion, Walsh becoming an AS and Stassi entrenching himself as a top flight catcher, what do we got that makes this team better? Outside of Rasiel, I don’t see that Perry has done anything to make this team better. Has he? This looks a lot like Eppler’s guys + Rasiel.
We also need to take away Suarez, Sandoval and Barria’s pitching and Mayfield, Lugares, Ward and Gosselin not being total black holes all day every day in the line up.
Also, if Rally Cat ever shows up again, snuff that dude.
Victory for you again over those seditious A*te haters 💪
Who’s talking about Arte? But yes, victory for me, all the victories, all the times.
https://twitter.com/DetmersSZN/status/1424488744518778882?s=20
They should’ve taken a bag of baseballs for him at the deadline
Funny thing is, he ain’t coming back. He can get a better deal, and situation, just about anywhere else.
I agree, more more likely to get at least a longer deal elsewhere, even it’s only a extra year. He won’t be back
fast forward to next year, he’s probably our starting SS.
5/$38
I’m not a fan of resigning Iglesias since there are soooo many options at Short in this offseason’s free agent class (assuming there is ever an agreement on a collective bargaining agreement) but they all have questions:
Seager if he can stay healthy
Correa if he can stop cheating
Baez if he can run out a groundball
Story- If he can play al his home games at Coors Field
Semien- If he doesn’t have to play defense
It would appear there is probably someone on this list who Arte would be willing to overpay with a big splash but we have 3 pretty good young SS prospects in the pipeline in Paris, J.J. & Aloe Vera. None of these prospects will be ready for another couple of years IMO. So whats the answer?
If I were PTP I would just tell Arte that I’m gonna go all out spending on pitching first. Get a couple good arms, then go back to him, look at who’s on the market at SS, and ask what can be spent at that point. I’d almost go year to year at shortstop for a couple years and see what shakes out on the farm. Spend on arms and extensions.
“Now Perry. I gave you the 2022 budget back in June, at the end of our fiscal year, of last season. I followed your projections and needs. Then came up with the budget that we will follow … We will follow the budget. Thank you. Let the Koi Boi know I am ready to see him on your way out.”
Hey Gitch, I’m curious as to who you would go after and spend big when it’s comes to pitching this offseason? I’m to GA to look at who’s available but isn’t this winter a weak pitching class?
Man, it is weak as far as I can tell. That’s why I figure a trade will have to happen if we get a true big #1. We will likely have to gamble on some sort of Robbie Ray, Kevin Gaussman, Anthony DeSclafani type guy…. guys who don’t have year after year after year of goodness.
This is another reason I’d extend Raisel. It doesn’t impede our ability to sign a really really good starter because there are none. But a lock down closer, plus a couple other good pen arms, then add DeSclafani to say Ohtani, Cobb, Sandoval, plus 2 other arms we already have? We could at least be competitive.
Semien if he doesn’t have to play defense? Legit what?
I definitely do NOT want a “Big Splash” spending on any of the first three guys.
Don’t want Story, or Correa or Seager. They are all flawed and yet will require a huge outlay of $$$.
I agree with you — just say NO.
I would not be opposed to bringing Iggy back for 1-2 years IF he can be had for a reasonable price. Yes, I know his defense has been disappointing, but my thinking is that it is a one year anomaly and next season will return to normal.
And despite his propensity to chase pitches out of the strikezone he HAS still come up with a number of clutch hits for us.
And most of all, he is MUCH cheaper than the options above.
Again, our Lions Share of resources need to go towards starting pitching,
Besides Chris Taylor is signing with us…little SS, some 2nd, LF, RF, CF when fatty is bloated and needs a day because his digestive track is in a slump….And I’m sure Re-done won’t be ready for opening day and will IL’it often next year too. Sure he can play 1st if needed……Chris Taylor solves all problems……except pitching.
We will get that old Giants guy, for too much for too many years
You mean the re-animated shell of Crawford? Man I hope not, at least at first glance. Is he any good defensively still?
It’s a big name, that is recognizable. Up in lights.
That would be a lot of hair on the left side of the infield….
Shampoo ain’t cheap, Arte won’t like it.
Head and Shoulders may just be looking at a new campaign
https://youtu.be/H1MT9fOAMHM
Plus do we really want to sign Yankee Lover Gerrit Cole’s Bro-in-law?
Nope. I mean if they have to sign him because they traded for some other team’s ace and have to pay him in addition to extending Iglesias to close and signing two other arms then sure. But just as a signing? Nope, don’t want him.
Though I also haven’t looked at him at all lately. If it turns out he’s Ozzie Smith and his big offensive blip this year matters less maybe I’d be OK. I know he won a couple gold gloves back around 2016, but that’s the last thing I really know on him.
Will Wilson? Is he available?
Only if we take on Cozart
Pay ourselves to pay Zack
I like Chris Taylor but I just don’t see him coming to Anaheim.
We will be able to find a 1-yr plug at short. I would stay clear of the big salary SS. We’ll need the extra cash for an Ohtani extensions. Iglesias has not been that bad as these fancy metrics make it appear to be but I’m onboard to try a new flavor.
His stats are a little wonky because he REALLY stunk it up early in the year.
That would be a waste. His hair length is just fine. The last thing Ohtani needs is extensions
If we didn’t already have Big Payday Tony at 3B ball & chaining us I’d be open to Perry trying another failed Eppl*r ( Zack Cozart ) move and signing Marcus Semien to a 3 yr deal and moving him over to 3B. Big huge long term deals suck 99% of the time people. IGNORE YOUR FAN AND HEARTSTRINGS AND REALIZE THAT WINNING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ONE PLAYER!!!! 💪 💪 💪 👈 🤘
On top of it the Mariners and A’s won. Every time I think we’re back in it…
There’s your problem. Baseball isn’t a thinking game
Well here’s some positive news. The Trash Pandas beat the Chatonooga Lookouts 26-3 with 23 hits today while the inland Empire 66ers beat the Visalia Rawhide 13-7 on the strength of 5 hits (now thats hard to do) The IE game featured the return of SS Kyren Paris from a 2+ month long IL stint . He had 3 of the 66ers 14 walks.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact the Angels will win 75-85 games a year for eternity
Was that your quote from 1971?
I don’t know, what did it say?
https://twitter.com/TaylorBlakeWard/status/1424533152425418752
The hit was an infield single in the first inning.
got better………..
Followed by Jake Smith Draft: 2021, Round: 6
2 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits 2 K, 1 walk…..
Followed by Eric Torres Draft: 2021, Round: 14,
1 inning, 0 runs, 0 walks 2 K
202120G0!
Technically it’s the 202119GO! Doesn’t sound or look right……..
Need to meet with marketing and focus group it.
You gotta embrace more the concept of the 202120 and what the act signifies than the actual 19.
202120…. the feel good action baseball movie, same production company that did the Chilean Miners movie…… Jonah Hill has already signed on to play Perry and Steve Buscemi is Arte.
How about Edward James Olmos as A*te?
EJO played Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1950’s and early 60’s. Danny Trejo ( Machete movies ) has played too many bad guys already.
Glenn Albanese Draft: 2021, Round: 15 also on that A+ roster.
Watson trade, Jose Marte already promotion to AAA.
Sunday, 2 innings, 1 run, 2 SO, 0 walks, 3 hits, 33/22 pitch/strikes
Cappy loss, but there were a few positives to take out of it. Such is the way when your in the middle of a let the kids play second half.
Can we have two game threads? One for the bitter, angry folks who just want to vent and spew venom about everything. The other one a slightly more upbeat one? It’s getting depressing. I feel like people are channeling their anger about a lot of non-baseball things around these parts.
It would never work. I would contaminate both of the threads with my constant cheerfulness.
Hahaha we’re just tired of sub .500 teams. It’s gotten so bad that you’re celebrating them actually being .500
Who made you fan patrol? This is an Angels baseball board and for the amount of time, money, and energy that I invest into this team I have every right to vent my frustration.
Of course you do. But the site has been taken over by such blatant, constant toxicity! Look I can understand being frustrated with the team and injuries- I share that. But I’m getting a bit tired of all negativity all the time. There’s enough of that in the world- I watch baseball to escape it.
As an example, Captain Jack has been a highlight for the last few weeks with 7 HR. He grounds out to the pitcher with the bases loaded and you are ready to completely forget his contribution over the last month and want him gone. It’s that kind of toxicity that I’m talking about. It feels over the top.
Sorry 71, I hope I’ve no beena source of tis for you. I’ve done my share of bitching, but I honestly try to look at the positives as well.
Oh I’ve bitched too for sure. And have also been negative. I’m guilty too. But a mixture is nice. There are positives about being .500 under the circumstances.
How about a image?
Sometimes I get the sense that the people in the game threads, and on other threads, actually believe that Arte or some Angels guy is reading what they type on this board.
They aren’t. The only people who read your latest complaint about Cishek and grit and why didn’t we sign Kirby Yates…. oh wait I mean Trevor Rosenthal…. wait, I meant Mark Melancon, yeah, him…. is the same guys who already read those complaints from you 25 other times.
I have a background in this stuff, so I may know somewhat what will actually show up in reports the executive suite sees. How about instead of boring the shit out of your fellow fans you….
Be very negative on the media nodes they actually pay a guy to monitor. When season tickets are cancelled, or offers are turned down, or Twitter is sour, they actually do record that data and ponder it if enough people are doing it.
How do you know?
From college and then from work. Never worked for a baseball team, but been in plenty of marketing departments.
So, you don’t know. Just guessing, I guess.
Thus the phrase “may know somewhat”. Reading comprehension was never your strong suit was it? Or are we on the sauce and mad dog commenting again?
So you don’t know? Then just say it. If you don’t like being wrong, just don’t be wrong. You don’t know everything, otherwise, you wouldn’t be slumming with the likes of us. Fans that just do things and say things they like and feel they need to say. Change the world on your own time, please.
Get off your high horse, and enjoy.
Thus the phrase “may know somewhat”. Reading comprehension was never your strong suit was it? Or are we on the sauce and mad dog commenting again?
What fun!
You just should have said you’ve seen 4000 more games than Lyle…..
My eyes have seen 4000 Powerpoints on instagram interaction with likely subscribers versus current average spending and blah poop…. try a blue background.
Leadership is peaking in or at least, someone in the tree is feeding second hand info on what is being written. Case in point. Daron Sutton, I’m convinced he was shit canned due to CTPG.
Thanks.
Know your worth Queen! Break up with that man Arte and his team! Find a man who values what you bring to the table, like Hal Steinbrenner!
Why can’t we cheer for our team and jeer for the problems it has? Why?
A lot of ppl would straddle both camps, though, I imagine–I can easily see myself doing that. The thing is that there are some irritatingly bad elements with this team–a lot of it in the bullpen, but also weak lineup (for the time being, at least) and questionable defense when it doesn’t make much sense, but there is also a lot to be hopeful about, esp the huge strides that young arms have made that were very much on display during this series.
Having said that, I’ve come to make peace with the fact that we are very much a mediocre team this year, but with a few choice (even if pricey acquisitions) and better health overall, we can be pretty competitive next year, and this makes me somewhat happy on average.
Agree 100%. Well said. I do see a lot of positives. Baseball is a fickle game. You lose superstar players and it’s really difficult to compete. Look at the Padres right now after losing a superstar. So while I’m disappointed – I also think perspective is important. .500 under the circumstances is pretty decent.
I wish I could say it’s pretty decent. Let’s be honest” it sucks. But the math combined with who’s on active roster says that 2021 is probably a lost cause and, as long as we spend the rest of the season evaluating possibilities for 2022 and plan wisely (or hope that FO does smart things), I’ll take it.
I am actually pretty optimistic that we wont be needing to fill too many holes between now and 2022 opening day (assuming no work stoppage.). The prospects that we have have matured to the point that we might actually expect them to be useful. I just hope that we don’t expect them to be what they arent (yet) and we get some good insurance policies if they stumble.
I enjoy saying rude things about some of the players. I have my favorites. I don’t badmouth Marsh, Upton, Fletch. You remember how badly Fletcher started the season. When Marsh whiffs I might say “he’ll be fine with experience”. When Upton pops up in a key spot I’ll say “oh dear”. I wasn’t crazy critical of Heaney.
On the other hand I’ll never like Ward or Cishek as players. When Joe brings in Cishek or Mayers or when he brought in Slegers I let him off the hook, blaming Perry. Which is the same as blaming Arte.
I know. Its not logical to excuse Marsh but not Ward. But anyway, I enjoy being sarcastic when we run ourselves out of an inning. Or leave runners on base. You can’t spell tradition without a capital A.
Somewhat the opposite for me with regards Ward. Not his fault that Team JeDi picked him in 1st round, and, fwiw, he has emerged as a near perfect bench piece if he’s used within his limits.
It does seem like it’s a bunch of people who hate their dad and have to suck off their boss who have found a safe space to vent their frustration and sense of powerlessness. Could be worse though….. I can’t read ANY Reddit political stuff without drinking a lot first.
That’s gross and you should be ashamed for posting it
Yes. Reddit is horrible.
So true. I don’t participate in any social media except this site (if it can be considered social media).
Only thing that can make EVERY problem worse is complaining about it. That being said, this a sports team super fan site, this is what they are. Gate keeping is about as cool as fruitless venting in my opinion, even if it’s couched in smart Alec, sassy, or sanctimonious speak. Let’s the kids play and let the folks speak. It’s all for fun anyway
Yep. It’s pointless. Just got sick of the ultra-negativity.
Based loaded, Mayfield hits a dribbler to the pitcher hahaha PATHETIC team
If it weren’t for the injuries, you wouldn’t even know who Jack Mayfield is.
Not so much pathetic, just unlucky that all our sluggers are on the DL.
No it’s pathetic. Stop trying to sugar coat everything. This organization needs to step it up. It’s time
Dude – chill out. No need coming in here all jacked up. Mia happens to be right. It’s not sugar coating. The injuries have been devastating. There are a lot of positives in their being at or around .500 under the circumstances.
In the .500 zone, once in a row is cute, then it becomes two many after that.
If the owner was paying attention to the game, if he really truly cared. We would be out of this mire by just doing things better as the owner of a professional sports team. But Arte makes his money, so he doesn’t care nomo nomo. Can’t you see?
Yeah, step it up! Force these players to stop getting injured!
Obviously you could do a better job stepping this team up!
Have you applied?
You tell em Seabass! You’re gonna whip this fanbase into shape aintcha! Can’t wait. By the way, I Kegel 250 Lbs. Is that a lot?
Ps I don’t want to know who he is. Keep him away from this team. Cute story but NAHHH
I agree Mia – I actually think it’s pretty great they are .500 on August 8 given the unbelievable rash of injuries.

Arte’s paying $30M for this: “Albert Pujols said he enjoyed catching up with former team #Angels this weekend: “I still have a great relationship with 95 pct of those guys over there“
So who is the 5%?
Gosselin
Ohtani. It’s 100% of the reason Pujols is gone.
Nope, Walsh.
Walsh.
Why would Pujols be mad at an outfielder that would take his place when he would DH?
Come on. Who is the Asian guy on the team that was blocking his playing time?
I was thinking Maddon.
Oh well. Detmers looks like he can hang, Adell and Marsh look improved. That’s all good. This season is now about the future not the present.
Which is what we say every year
“Just wait until next year, we’re definitely built/in place for a playoff run in 2-3 years though” over and over again.
2185 for sure!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQB2-Kmiic
I’m old enough to have heard it being said in 2001, just saying.
I think Cy Rookie only happens against the Angels and rarely in our favor
