Angels lose 8-2, fall back to .500 again

For the final game vs the Dodgers this year, it was Reid Detmers vs Walker Buehler. This war not a fair outing at all. Really the only hope the Angels had was that they could use a Cy rookie against a team for once. That did not happen. At all. Reid Detmers in his second start went just like his first. He gets Houston next. Joy.

Recap

Trial by Fire Part 2

The Angels got a 2 out walk but that was it. Reid Detmers now had to go out there vs the Dodgers. It did not go well in the first. Back to back to back hits, a high throw on a groundball, 2 stolen bases, and a walk resulted in only 2 runs. It really could have been much, much worse. 2-0 Dodgers after 1.

Brandon Marsh got the first hit for the Angels. Reid Detmers walked, but the offense failed to score. Detmers almost got out of it in the 2nd without more damage but a groundball got by 3 defenders to bring in a third run. Then Albert Pujols hit a pinch hit 2 run home run. 5-0 Dodgers after 2.

Angels did not get shut out as Gosselin doubled in Fletcher in the third. Detmers finally had himself a clean inning in the third. 5-1 Dodgers after 3.

Despite the first two getting on, the Angels failed to get a run across. Detmers was still in there and got through the 4th no problem. Still 5-1 Dodgers.

The Angels went down quietly in the 5th vs the Dodgers ace. Despite a speedy Turner on the bases again, Reid Detmers made it through 5 innings. Still 5-1 Dodgers.

6th inning came and Upton pinch hit for Detmers with one on. He fouled out to end the inning. Detmers went 5 innings, 5 runs allowed, including a home run to Pujols.

Bullpen game

Now the bullpen had to come in for the 6th. Who would get the ball first? Why thy best name in gut Angels system, Packy Naughton! He was called up a few days ago and made his MLB debut today! After a bloop single, he put down the next two in order. Then someone ran onto the feild. It threw him for a loop and he allowed a ground ball to get through. 6-1 Dodgers after 6.

Buehler was out of the game. Not that it mattered surf this offense. They went down in order in the seventh. Mayers had the bottom of the inning, and he gave up a 2 run home run. 8-1 Dodgers after 7.

Runners got on in the 8th, and actually got a run across with an Adell double. Ohtani pinch hit walked to load the bases for Mayfield, who grounded out to the pitcher. Selman came into pitch next and Ohtani went into the outfield. He didn’t allow more damage and it was 8-2 Dodgers heading into the 9th.

Fletcher grounded out. Eaton grounded out. Stassi struck out. The Angels are now back to .500.

Upcoming

After a day off tomorrow, the Angels get a double header Tuesday vs Toronto. It’s a part of a 4 game series vs the Blue Jays. Oh and Houston after that. Next week is not going to be pretty. Please drink responsibly.

*are* we doing better than last year? I’d say definitely so. Taking into consideration the injuries we’re at 56-56. At our win/loss rate of 2020 we’d now be 49-63 and that’s rounding up (48.53 wins…but you can’t have .53 so we’ll call it 49 wins).

And if we compare it to our 2019, at that rate we’d be 50-62.

We have a tough stretch coming up but Ohtani will be hitting and that should help.

Who knows, maybe even Walsh could avoid TJS and play sometime this month, that will also help.

Take away the Ohtani explosion, Walsh becoming an AS and Stassi entrenching himself as a top flight catcher, what do we got that makes this team better? Outside of Rasiel, I don’t see that Perry has done anything to make this team better. Has he? This looks a lot like Eppler’s guys + Rasiel.

We also need to take away Suarez, Sandoval and Barria’s pitching and Mayfield, Lugares, Ward and Gosselin not being total black holes all day every day in the line up.

Also, if Rally Cat ever shows up again, snuff that dude.

I’m not a fan of resigning Iglesias since there are soooo many options at Short in this offseason’s free agent class (assuming there is ever an agreement on a collective bargaining agreement) but they all have questions:

Seager if he can stay healthy
Correa if he can stop cheating
Baez if he can run out a groundball
Story- If he can play al his home games at Coors Field
Semien- If he doesn’t have to play defense

It would appear there is probably someone on this list who Arte would be willing to overpay with a big splash but we have 3 pretty good young SS prospects in the pipeline in Paris, J.J. & Aloe Vera. None of these prospects will be ready for another couple of years IMO. So whats the answer?

If I were PTP I would just tell Arte that I’m gonna go all out spending on pitching first. Get a couple good arms, then go back to him, look at who’s on the market at SS, and ask what can be spent at that point. I’d almost go year to year at shortstop for a couple years and see what shakes out on the farm. Spend on arms and extensions.

Hey Gitch, I’m curious as to who you would go after and spend big when it’s comes to pitching this offseason? I’m to GA to look at who’s available but isn’t this winter a weak pitching class?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  VictoriousVIC

Man, it is weak as far as I can tell. That’s why I figure a trade will have to happen if we get a true big #1. We will likely have to gamble on some sort of Robbie Ray, Kevin Gaussman, Anthony DeSclafani type guy…. guys who don’t have year after year after year of goodness.

This is another reason I’d extend Raisel. It doesn’t impede our ability to sign a really really good starter because there are none. But a lock down closer, plus a couple other good pen arms, then add DeSclafani to say Ohtani, Cobb, Sandoval, plus 2 other arms we already have? We could at least be competitive.

I definitely do NOT want a “Big Splash” spending on any of the first three guys.

Don’t want Story, or Correa or Seager. They are all flawed and yet will require a huge outlay of $$$.

I agree with you — just say NO.

I would not be opposed to bringing Iggy back for 1-2 years IF he can be had for a reasonable price. Yes, I know his defense has been disappointing, but my thinking is that it is a one year anomaly and next season will return to normal.

And despite his propensity to chase pitches out of the strikezone he HAS still come up with a number of clutch hits for us.

And most of all, he is MUCH cheaper than the options above.

Again, our Lions Share of resources need to go towards starting pitching,

Nope. I mean if they have to sign him because they traded for some other team’s ace and have to pay him in addition to extending Iglesias to close and signing two other arms then sure. But just as a signing? Nope, don’t want him.

Though I also haven’t looked at him at all lately. If it turns out he’s Ozzie Smith and his big offensive blip this year matters less maybe I’d be OK. I know he won a couple gold gloves back around 2016, but that’s the last thing I really know on him.

Of course you do. But the site has been taken over by such blatant, constant toxicity! Look I can understand being frustrated with the team and injuries- I share that. But I’m getting a bit tired of all negativity all the time. There’s enough of that in the world- I watch baseball to escape it.

As an example, Captain Jack has been a highlight for the last few weeks with 7 HR. He grounds out to the pitcher with the bases loaded and you are ready to completely forget his contribution over the last month and want him gone. It’s that kind of toxicity that I’m talking about. It feels over the top.

Sometimes I get the sense that the people in the game threads, and on other threads, actually believe that Arte or some Angels guy is reading what they type on this board.

They aren’t. The only people who read your latest complaint about Cishek and grit and why didn’t we sign Kirby Yates…. oh wait I mean Trevor Rosenthal…. wait, I meant Mark Melancon, yeah, him…. is the same guys who already read those complaints from you 25 other times.

I have a background in this stuff, so I may know somewhat what will actually show up in reports the executive suite sees. How about instead of boring the shit out of your fellow fans you….

  • Cancel season ticket packages and tell them why.
  • Respond to their social media negatively, with a point, such as “I’ll buy tickets to this promotion they are advertising when they stop making me watch Bundy.” Etc.
  • Downvote and dislike their social media stuff.

Be very negative on the media nodes they actually pay a guy to monitor. When season tickets are cancelled, or offers are turned down, or Twitter is sour, they actually do record that data and ponder it if enough people are doing it.

A lot of ppl would straddle both camps, though, I imagine–I can easily see myself doing that. The thing is that there are some irritatingly bad elements with this team–a lot of it in the bullpen, but also weak lineup (for the time being, at least) and questionable defense when it doesn’t make much sense, but there is also a lot to be hopeful about, esp the huge strides that young arms have made that were very much on display during this series.

Having said that, I’ve come to make peace with the fact that we are very much a mediocre team this year, but with a few choice (even if pricey acquisitions) and better health overall, we can be pretty competitive next year, and this makes me somewhat happy on average.

Agree 100%. Well said. I do see a lot of positives. Baseball is a fickle game. You lose superstar players and it’s really difficult to compete. Look at the Padres right now after losing a superstar. So while I’m disappointed – I also think perspective is important. .500 under the circumstances is pretty decent.

h27kim

Reply to  Fansince1971

I wish I could say it’s pretty decent. Let’s be honest” it sucks. But the math combined with who’s on active roster says that 2021 is probably a lost cause and, as long as we spend the rest of the season evaluating possibilities for 2022 and plan wisely (or hope that FO does smart things), I’ll take it.

I am actually pretty optimistic that we wont be needing to fill too many holes between now and 2022 opening day (assuming no work stoppage.). The prospects that we have have matured to the point that we might actually expect them to be useful. I just hope that we don’t expect them to be what they arent (yet) and we get some good insurance policies if they stumble.

I enjoy saying rude things about some of the players. I have my favorites. I don’t badmouth Marsh, Upton, Fletch. You remember how badly Fletcher started the season. When Marsh whiffs I might say “he’ll be fine with experience”. When Upton pops up in a key spot I’ll say “oh dear”. I wasn’t crazy critical of Heaney.

On the other hand I’ll never like Ward or Cishek as players. When Joe brings in Cishek or Mayers or when he brought in Slegers I let him off the hook, blaming Perry. Which is the same as blaming Arte.

I know. Its not logical to excuse Marsh but not Ward. But anyway, I enjoy being sarcastic when we run ourselves out of an inning. Or leave runners on base. You can’t spell tradition without a capital A.

h27kim

Somewhat the opposite for me with regards Ward. Not his fault that Team JeDi picked him in 1st round, and, fwiw, he has emerged as a near perfect bench piece if he’s used within his limits.
