Angels Shutout A’s for Once

Jaime Barria is on the bump vs the A’s in the 3rd game of the series. With the injuries and trades, his time to shine is now. And shine he did. 6 and 2/3 shutout innings against a very great A’s team. Gave the Angels a chance to win. The offense however, did not seem to want to win, scoring just 1 run. The pitchers would have to be perfect to win.

Recap

Golden Barria

The game started with a HBP by Barria. That did not go anywhere, however, and he got out of the inning no problem. Offensvely, Cole Irvin went through 1-3 1-2-3. Scoreless after 1.

Barria shut down the A’s in order in the second. The Angels gave Irvin some trouble in the bottom of the inning, but alas, continued to not score. 0-0 after 2.

A scary 3rd with 2 on and 2 outs for Barria ended with relief as he kept the A’s off the board. Then, after literal games of not scoring, the Angels finally put a run across vs Oakland. Ohtani doubling in Thaiss! 1-0 Angels after 3.

NOT SHUT OUT!

Jaime Barria had a lead and acted like it, shutting down the A’s in the 4th. The Angels got action going in the bottom of the 4th, but were unable to capitalize. Still 1-0 Angels after 4.

For the 5th, Jaime seemed to be cruising, and got through the inning quickly to send the offense back out there. Unfortunately, the offense didn’t like being out there and went down easy. Still 1-0 Angels after 5.

The 6th came and the 6th went, with Jaime Barria still on the mound. While he did give up a double, the lead was still there. Not that it seemed to be appreciated, as the offense went down in order. Still 1-0 Angels after 6.

7th time and Barria was still out there. Well, it may have been too much. With 2 outs, he loaded the bases, unable to find the zone. Still, 6 and 2/3 scoreless innings vs one of the best teams in baseball was a great outing!

Don’t Blow it please

Unfortunately, anyone besides D-Cell would be a bad move and he couldn’t pitch THIS much. So Maddon put in his favorite, Cishek. He immediately gave up a line drive right on the screws. Luckily, it was caught by Gosselin.

Even the Angels’ subreddit knows it

Now the Angels had to face their old friend Petit. A pitcher they just let walk for some reason.

Of course it is Cishek in first…

He shut down the Angels, keeping it at 1-0 After 7. 6 outs to go for the bullpen, an insurance run or 5 would have been handy.

Quijada was now in and it did not go pretty. He let one on, but got a double play. So far not bad, except Laureano was up. The A’s player who has single handedly wrecked the Angels. And he scorched one, almost a home run. A ball that would be a home run in 25 other parks. Maddon pulled him for D-Cell for the 4 out save. He got the out of it with a flyout. Exhale.

Ohtani was up first in the bottom of the 8th. He struck out. Gosselin up next, he flew out. Churches grounded out to end the inning. Still 1-0 Angels after 8.

9th inning time, 3 outs to go. No room for error. First batter, strikeout. Second batter, a flyout. Third batter, strikeout. Angels win!

Upcoming

The Angels face Oakland again tomorrow at 1PM. July is in the books now, 2 months to go. No Waiver trade deadline, the team is what it is now. Drink responsibly.

Angels draft Kumar Rocker 2022

also, kind of exciting, recent interviewee (thank, Jeff!) Ryan Smith made his AA debut yesterday and took the loss, 6 IP, 3 ER. The pen then gave up 7 more in the 11-1 loss. Davis Daniel was the hard luck loser in the 2nd game, 2 runs, 1 earned. I believe it was mentioned elsewhere (maybe here in this thread) that he whiffed 10, walked nobody. So the Trash Pandas got swept but those pitching performances continue our reasons for optimism.

my memory ain’t what it used to be. I dimly recall some Seattle pitcher (I think it was Seattle) who came up and was rudely treated by us. This year, too, so it’s not like I’m going way way back. Some heralded Seattle (if it was Seattle) guy.

Anyway, my hope for Detmers is 6 innings, 2 runs or less, which would be outstanding, and we get 3 runs or more.

Eric_in_Portland

turns out it was KC. Jackson Kowar. So that’s about the worst that Detmers can do. It’s the low bar. But as stated, I hope he looks good, if only for his self-confidence.

They were talking about this same type of situation on the TBS game today and the White Sox pitcher.

You just don’t pull up someone because of numbers in a situation like this, you are also looking for the hot hand, a pitcher that is on a roll.

Do Detmers recent outings reflect that?

After the Angels acquired Luis for Cron, Fangraphs had listed Rengifo as a fringe prospect, basically a guy who might really make in impact. On that same list one could also find David Fletcher.

At this point I think they can only offer him close to the minimum at about $135K without losing a draft pick.

They have about 2 more hours to sign him. Knowing Perry he better take it if he knows what’s good for him.

Although a last minute deal could be put together, it doesn’t look like the Mets will sign Rocker.

It might be dumb luck that the Angels passed over him to overslot the later picks, but the decision sure looks astute right now. Can’t imagine the vitriol that would be hurled at Perry right now if he drafted a lame Rocker.

It’s good to see Barria (and Sandoval) emerge as legit starting options for 2022, but it’s probably still a bit risky (at least) to expect that they can be reliably expected to fill starting roles next year. As per excellent points raised by FS1971, the team has a few important holes to fill, for respectability in 2022 (no one really should expect much this year, I think–Perry is being wise to punt as he did on deadline). Given that Ohtani probably won’t be a a “full time” pitcher in the foreseeable future, a six-man rotation has to be planned for and a full time top of the rotation pitcher and a couple of veteran mid-to-back of rotation arms (someone like Cobb for instance) would still be needed. Ohtani can take the 2nd spot and a combination of Barria, Sandova, Suarez, Rodriguez, and Detmers could probably take the 2 remaining spots, plus fill-in for injuries and some of the bullpen roles. Resigning the Church Battery is probably important (barring an opportunity to sign a comparable closer cheaper–i.e. something that probably won’t happen) if we want to restore any hope of stability in the bullpen, coupled with hopefully better dumpster diving plus creative use of all the “interesting” arms with options that we have suddenly stockpiled. Add a good (but not necessarily excellent) replacement shortstop, a good “backup/halftime” backstop and a defensively capable backup CF, and suddenly, we should be back in business for 2022. Many of the pieces are already on hand: Church Battery and Cobb are already in the fold and hopefully can be resigned within reason. Adding an extra back of the rotation veteran hopefully won’t be too difficult and at any rate, not as important as having a front of the rotation arm. I would not actually mind bringing Joe Churches back, if it is more economical than going after one of the premier FA SS’s. Eaton and Lagares would make for good defensive 4th OF and retaining either or even both, would be helpful in either relieving Trout (wherever he plays next year) and backing up/insuring for Marsh and/or Adell. Trading one of Adell or Marsh, plus Canning and one other prospect, as per FS1971’s suggestion, for a youngish potential top of the rotation starter with future control seems very doable, if a bit costly.

Senator_John_Blutarsky
Legend
Reply to  h27kim

I agree Sandoval has shown a lot this season, but I still have my doubts about Barria.

If a staff ace emerges internally (Detmers?), we’ll be in a great position. If not, we’re going to need to acquire.

h27kim
Trusted Member

I don’t think we can rely too much on internal resources, period. So out of 6 possible rotation spots, I’d figure that a combination of the 5 prospects we have can fill only 2. Acquiring a potential top of the rotation arm with future control is a must, I think, even if the price involves Adell or Marsh and Canning, plus a longer term prospect like Adams (as per FS1971’s thoughts), and we’d still probably need to add 1 or 2 veteran arms with mid rotation potential (depending on whether we keep Cobb).

Reply to  h27kim

Kim, I 100% agree with you regarding the need to add more SP.

It’s easy to get excited (I definitely am) about the progress some of our young starters have made, but it would be a mistake not to add more starting pitching.

My cousin and I were discussing this very topic yesterday. I told him that, in my opinion, you always have to assume that roughly 2-4 (at minimum) of your starting staff will either 1)underperform, 2)regress, 3)face injury, and in Ohtani’s case 4) will he be able to keep up the pace? + he often has his turn in the rotation skipped.

So while something like …
Ohtani
Sandoval
Cobb
Detmers
Rodriguez
Suarez
Barria
Canning
…. is definitely a nice core, there absolutely are question marks there with each one of them.

I would want to add maybe 2 starting pitchers to go directly into the rotation, and add another 2-3 that can be in the minor leagues. This would give us a ton of depth, and even (probably) make our bullpen better because some of those starters can be stashed in the bullpen a la the dodgers.

Probably a very bad combination: someone who was extremely highly touted before his stock fell a bit, but is still represented by Boras who wants him to be signed as if he’s still a top 3 pick, if not the top pick. :/

Barria. Apparently the man wants a job in 2022.

The sour mope “we just let Petit walk!” is second only to the “we could have had Vlad Jr right now!” bullshit.

Yes we “let” the pitcher who was no longer under contract with us “walk” back to the Bay Area where he’d played all his seasons accept one with us and where he still owned a house that he still lived in. He signed a contract with the A’ss at the literal start of the off season to boot.

You fellas do realize that sometimes a guy just doesn’t want to be on your team, right? Not because your team did something wrong, but because he misses Casper Dog and the view from his back porch or any number of other reasons. Why find weak ass stuff to bitch about when there are plenty of ACTUAL things to whine like a ten year old girl over with this team?

Yusmiero signed a 3 year $14.5 Million contract with the A’ss No way Billy would have ever paid that kind of coin or made that length of a commitment to a middle reliever. Considering the A’ss lack of financial resources its interesting that Beane’s would allocate this amount of their budget to a set up guy but it has definitely paid off for them.

But relative to V Jr., I cant pet your Gritch on this one gitcho. I don’t see any similarities between Petit and the Baldoquin fiasco. If they define success as when preparation meets opportunity, dumping $11 million on a completely unheralded nobody prevents the utilization of either of these important ingredients and just makes us look like the biggest dump asses that ever ran a professional baseball team. With this lack of preparation I’m sure Jerry would have tried to make a trade for Sidd Finch given the opportunity.

I went looking for our 104 game w-l records since we started losing, which mean starting in 2016. What really stands out is how horribly we finished in 2019 when Ausmus was our manager. If it’s of any interest to you, here are some numbers

2016: 47-57. From that point we were 27-31, finishing 74-88
2017: 50-54. Then 30-28 to finish 80-82
2018: 52-52. Then 28-30 to finish 80-82
2019: 54-50. Then (yikes) 18-40 for a 72-90 record.

This year’s 52-52 fits in nicely with the last three full seasons. I’d take 30-28 like in 2017 and a final 82-80 record. It’d be a lot of progress from 72-90 (and 26-34).

The only reason to look at the past is to see “why” it happened, like history is meant to learn from. Every season was because the pitching sucked, and it took all the way from 2015 to 2021 PTP, to address this system wide issue. After this years draft I finally have hope for the future of this team.
