Angels Pen Blows Heaney Gem, Angels Swept

This one doesn’t even deserve a writeup but Andrew Heaney pitched great and Shohei Ohtani hit the first HR of the post-Pujols era.

The Rays swept the Angels. Are they that good or are we this bad.

Answer: We are this bad. Maybe even a little worse. Hope that the walking wounded heal and put together something resembling a team but wow, at this juncture the chances of that happening seem pretty remote.

Mike Mayers pitched scared and Felix Peña’s long-awaited season debut was more jittery than my pacemaker after a quadruple espresso. Anything else to add? Nope.

Overall we come out ahead on this day. And I must respectfully cover my ears/eyes for any knee-jerk comment that says “SEE? We drop Pujols and we still suck” … yes we do, but at least we are headed in the right direction.

Honestly watching Fletcher suck has been the hardest thing so far. Had high hopes for him. Seems like the scouting report is out on him and he’s got no answer. Looks lost. And Trout….smdh.

What I think is …

Before he left, Albert let the cat out of the bag.

If you think we are bad now, just wait and see how things stink up in Anaheim.

Albert told everyone that Mr. Moreno does not care for any of the players. It’s just business to him.

So prior to that speech the players didn’t realize this is a business?

Incredible.

I have found the silver lining. Ok, I might not really believe it but here goes….

We started out 7-3 as we all remember. Since then…..we have achieved the mystical 6-14!!

Yes, we are 13-17 but there you are. Embedded in 13-17 is “6-14”. We will now play .655 ball the rest of the way, as we did in 2002. That will give us another 85 wins and we’ll finish 98-64.

Doesn’t matter how good an offense is if the bullpen gives up 8 runs late.

Really good pitching by Heaney. Crap afterwards. This is a game good teams win.

I’m stunned and bewildered at the outcome. Why would the team waste all the good vibes from the day’s events and fall to immediately embark on a long winning streak?

I’m not saying I’m cool with trading the whole team and blowing it up, but at this rate I’d rather trade Trout and everyone good to rebuild the farm. We could get a massive haul for him and Ohtani. I just couldn’t care less about their individual stats if the team sucks. Here’s to Artes personal humiliation.

You would never get enough to rebuild the farm by trading two players – even generational (or all-time) greats like Trout.

Rebuilding the farm would take years of development. I am not even sure a Astros style tear down is even possible anymore, as it implies most teams are all in year after year, and that is just no longer the case.

IDK, JeDi did it pretty quickly in Seattle…

Sure, but not by trading to fill up the farm.

Seattle was rated as the No. 5 system going into 2020 and moved up to No. 3 overall in a special midseason ranking by Baseball America. But the Mariners’ top 30 prospects, per Baseball America, feature 24 homegrown players who started in their system – 18 were drafted and five were signed as international free agents.

We do only have five guaranteed contracts for 2022. Now, what we do in terms of rebuilding the farm versus just buying free agents is another story. But at least, we will finally have some salary open. But I have no idea what the rebuilding plan actually is.

Those five guaranteed contracts will cost $112,000,000. There’s no doubt that budget will be a limiting factor just as much then as it is now.

Funny, I just read that in a SI article and then came back to see your comment. Yeah, good point.

20 players is too much to get from dumpster diving, so my guess is Arte will approve purchasing one big name and send Minasian straight to the junkyard so they can fill the rest of the roster cheaply in bulk.

Had a great time at the ballpark for 7 innings.

Mayers looked wrong from the get go. No velo, no snap. Is he still sick?

I wondered why Pena was kept down so long. Now I know, he’s as weak as Mayers.

Heaney pitched a gem, Walsh made a couple nice plays at first, but the bullpen blows.

Well, we picked up nearly the entire bullpen in the final few weeks. Let’s buy/trade for bullpen arms.

Contrary to expectations, I am thinking that the starters may be all right.

This team rarely ever puts it all together.

Good starter performance with some run support = bullpen blows.
Early runs = starting pitching blows, bullpen looks great, but too little too late.
Solid pitching for the whole game = all-you-can-eat LOBster buffet.

Step 1: Persuade Arte Moreno to spend on a solid scouting and development organization.
<mission failed, you can stop reading now>

Step 2: Make sure Trout, Rendon and Ohtani get lots of rest days to stay healthy and if they do get injured, leave them on the IL a few extra days “just in case.”

Step 3: Recall Pujols from DFA instead of releasing him.

Step 4: When pitchers are doing well, play close attention to pitch counts and times through the lineup, when pitchers are doing poorly, give them extra pitches so they can work through it.

Step 5: Walsh is too young to handle the pressure of a key lineup spot, so make sure he always hits after Upton/Pujols (since he’ll be back) and never after Trout/Rendon.

Step 6: Leave Fletcher at leadoff no matter how much he struggles. This ensures fewer at-bats for Ohtani and Trout as they will hit #2/#3 instead of #1/#2.

We have given up as many runs as COL and only two less than DET… and only DET has a worse runs scored to runs allowed. Good stuff

This team doesn’t deserve any analysis. It’s mostly Arte’s fault. He was at the presser when they signed Pujols but not at the presser when he released him and just sends his crony out there.

This isn’t even close to the worst team the Angels have fielded. But at least then we had literally no expectations that they should be any good. This team, has a good foundation, but as long as Arte is the owner, I can’t see them going anywhere. Who wants to work for the guy that fires scouts and spends most of your payroll before you even have half your roster filled out?

Like it……and then we turn the fountains into a volcano……I’ll call The Mirage in LV tomorrow and find the company that did their volcano fountain. Or, possibly arrange several garbage dumpsters on the fountains in centerfield and just burn tires in them when a pitching change is made. Black smoke would be a nice effect, and screw the environment, we’re in end times anyway following this team.

Bad owner employing bad executives who hire bad managers to sign bad players who are coached badly.
