LA Angels Monday News Crash: We’re Underway!

The good news is that the amount of news to link is significantly improved now that Summer Camp is underway. The bad news is that there is a lot of bad news. Happy birthday, Shohei Ohtani! Griffin Canning says his platelet rich plasma injection has worked and he feels ten times better. Here is a public service message from Debbie Trout.

At the first simulated game of Summer Camp Masahiro Tanaka took a Giancarlo Stanton line drive to the head but he says he is all good. He has a mild concussion and will be going into concussion protocol.

The Opt Outs

It appears that David Price has opted out of the season. Felix Hernandez has also opted out of the season. Cleveland bench coach Brad Mills also opted out.

The Positive Tests

Salvador Perez and Miguel Sano have both tested positive for the coronavirus. Also testing positive are Socrates Brito and Blake Cederlind of the Pirates as well as Genesis Cabrera and Ricardo Sanchez of the Cardinals. A “small number” of Seattle Mariners have also tested positive. Follow along the tracker here, from our very own EIC!

I’m looking forward to a postable schedule, which should be available in a few minutes. I don’t like 6 games vs the Dodgers and it looks like 7 out of 10 games vs the Rangers will be in Texas. We’ve only had a quick glimpse so far, so I imagine it’s balanced out somehow. 6 of 10 vs the Astros at home.

So we get neither a home opener, nor a home closer. F*** Manfred.

I never thought I would see the day that Mike Trout sets a bad example (even if it is inadvertent).

For those that missed it, he is wearing an N95 mask, which the CDC still says should not be used by the general public. Second, he is wearing the mask in a manner that makes it no better than a regular surgical mask. N95 masks require BOTH straps and a self test to make sure it is sealed properly. Without the second strap, the mask can’t be sealed properly to his face, which means it isn’t providing the extra layer of protection that N95 masks are meant to provide.

To be fair. His neck is too box for that strap.

You would think these billionaires would have gotten the correct PPE for their Investments. But the if everyone was healthy, the show would go on. #notevenhelpping

Yeah, I’ll give him that.

Worn properly, N95 masks get hot and stuffy. It really isn’t an appropriate mask for playing any kind of sport. Regular surgical masks would have made more sense, and cloth masks with the team logos would have been the best so they could be washed and re-used.

So it’s probably not Trout’s fault that he has a N95 mask, but he should at least wear it properly.

should get a copper weave fabric surgical style mask ( copper is anti-microbial ). These masks can be reused after a hand washing.

Brito doesn’t really have COVID, he’s just been partying too hard with Bill and Ted!

I always wondered about Socrates’ last name. For 10 bonus points, what is Aristotle’s last name?

They haven’t even figured out how to have consecutive practices without having testing issues. And they expect to bring teams in from out of town and have full series played?

I just don’t see it.

Seeing Trout running the bases in a mask just once again gave me the feeling that these guys shouldn’t be doing this.

Nick Markakis just opted out of the season, btw

So is there any chance now of King Felix hitting his pre-retirement milestones? Not too many players fall off the statistical cliff as fast as he did, when he hit 30.

Re: positive tests, Angels are testing THEMSELVES. Contractor hasn’t shown up, good Lord. Story at MLBTR, Rosenthal tweet. Likely Teheran and Thaiss compromised, not in camp.

MLB TV, over the weekend saying that now is the time to get sick. Get well. Get in shape. Get into the season when your team could use you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
