Baseball is Back! WeekendLinks in HaloLand

Yes, you read that correctly! Baseball is back! (Tomorrow)

The Angels will open the 2020 Spring Training Campaign on Saturday, February 22 with a split-squad matchup against the White Sox and the Royals. Manager Joe Maddon says the regulars are not likely to play, but baseball is baseball!

User KelN90 writes a FanPost quickly summarizing the Angels’ roster and what kind of production we can expect out of each position. Doing our job for us already!

Brett Anderson destroys the A’s…(and says what all “slegna” fans know about that nasty Coliseum…)

Anthony Rendon is back after having gone home for the birth of his second child…

David Ortiz blasts Mike Fiers…by my count, the players that have been angry at Fiers for ratting out his teammates include Astros on that roster (the cheaters) and Ortiz…makes a person wonder…

In addition, also looks like the Astros are doing great!

I know we have had issues with Forbes in the past, but maybe it’s a new era…in any case, they saw through Crane a long time ago

Poor Kershaw…after Game 1 of the 2017 World Series, he was on his way to turning his postseason legacy around…he reflects on it

Sure, the Angels have pitching injury problems, but everyone on the Yankees is dropping like flies, including Luis Severino…Gerrit Cole must be wondering where all the other starting pitchers are (not that he wouldn’t be doing the same thing on this team)…

Move over, Andrelton Simmons…there’s another defensive wizard on the up-and-coming

I don’t know what happened to Angels social, but it’s amazing so far…

Finally, I must say I cackled at this joke…

I admit I don’t pay much attention to the Dodger injuries so I didn’t know until today that Verdugo has a back problem.

And the Red Sox are ok with that and are waiting for him to get healthy. I bring it up because it tells us that their concern about Graterol was phony. Otherwise they’d have balked at Verdugo, too.

And this confirms to me that there was some restructuring going on due to angry Sux and Doyer canvases, thus putting me on the pro Arte side.

I hope one of these days we find out which prospects of ours were in the original deal and how that changed.

This is why Rob Manfred is Finished as League Commissioner, the fans and players are now at risk. Imagine angry Dodgers and Yankees fans flooding Angel Stadium parking lot and Houston fans coming in with a chip on their shoulder, our parking lot is going to look like Dodger Stadiums, with 10x the police presence and that is going to be repeated across the country, this is going to be ridiculous. The complete and total lack of justice, the drip of more damning bad news, the lack of any real league oversight while this was all going on, the blaming of the union, the disastrous rollout of every single part of this. Rob Manfred is completely done and his most important act as League Commissioner is accepting responsibility, Resigning, and calling for an independent investigation and interim league commissioner to oversee the Astros/Boston scandal. Fans need an outlet which isn’t vigilant or violence, or displaced anger online, and to use the fans as a weapon to enforce the rules through sheer anger and negativity with no MLB resolution what so ever is beyond a scandal, it’s a malpractice, it’s dangerous.

I already knew there are worse people in this world than the Astros cheaters.

This did, however, make me look up Reddick’s stats. His Avg and Obp in 2017 are off the charts compared to the rest of his career. It’s almost like he knew what was come ng.

That’s ridiculous. The dude cheated at a baseball game. Family is off limits. Just goes to show how tough keyboard warriors can be when they can hide behind anonymity.

If I heard somebody in the stands say that, I’d tell that person to STFU. Boo all you want, but there are lines.

Agreed, the reaction is now over the top. As far as something in the stands in the way of threats at the Big A, the offender would be escorted out in a hurry at the demand of the fans, would not be tolerated as well it should not be. Booing is fine, but getting so worked up you yell threats at the Astros players is just poor judgement.

I have never understood the fascination over Ortiz. He’s the biggest hypocrite I’ve ever seen in the game. I still remember his interview on hammering players getting caught used steroids and how they should be banned for life. A year later he gets caught and SILENCE.

Screw Ortiz. If I had my F bomb for the month I would use it right now lol.

If anybody needed another reason to subscribe to The Athletic, I just finished Joe Posnanski’s profile of Rod Carew in his Baseball Top 100 series. Best baseball writing since Roger Angell, and if you haven’t read The Summer Game or Late Seasons, do so. NOW. Joe’s profiles run from December 18 to Opening Day and he’s up to #35, George Brett. Just plain excellent.

Wow. That Wilder/Fury fight…. what a shit show. The fight couldn’t have looked more like Wilder went in thinking “he’s white, pudgy and lucked out last time. I’m not even gonna bother keeping my left hand up.” Wilder should change his name to Huggy Bear, fought like an out of shape twat, took an early beating, looked like he gave up by the end of 4, and then the excuse explosion began via various media mouths. I have never heard so many commentators and ex fighters grope for reasons for Wilder getting his ass kicked. I stopped counting after the 7th “reason” Wilder lost that didn’t involve just getting punched a lot, but they just kept making up reasons. Fury had a plan and you could tell, other than smothering his close in combinations late in the fight, he totally executed it. I was really surprised, I thought Wilder was gonna come out like a mad dog but by round 3 it looked like the ref was just trying to keep Wilder from looking too pathetic. I’m glad you didn’t pay a bunch of money to go see that.

So Glad that we can see the end of winter ahead of us and we soon will enjoy Terry on the telecast proving that we have made it to Spring Training games and the season is right around the corner. Having Joe as the new leader will be fun also as he never has the same line up two days in a row and that will provide endless posts. Watching games will be more interesting as good hitting is like the watching people enjoy potato chips, “bet you can’t eat just one” type thing, as one hit will lead to another. Our collective fingers will be crossed hoping that our pitching is solid enough each night and that they can make it to the fifth inning or better. Every season fans of the 30 different teams feel the same hope and anxiety and that ST will be good enough to provide a winning start to the season. GO Angels!

It has to be a giant improvement. The two times I was able to go to Arlington, their stadium was as bland as could be. Especially since it was next door to the Cowboys stadium, which is about as gaudy as any sports stadium on the planet.

“it’ll blow over by spring training.”

Just another out of touch billionaire. This is going to be a season long thing, every time they show up in a new city that scab will be ripped open. The push to “move on” from the commissioners office and Houston is just going to make this all worse. No one feels like justice has been done, strip the goddamn title, Rob. No one won in 2017 and they shouldn’t be allowed to call themselves champions and profit off it it. The last World Series winner in the AL West came in 2002. Clearly the public embarrassment wasn’t punishment enough.

Get ready for guys to be thrown at, brawls on the field, hard slides, pimped home runs. Drama finally comes to MLB. The days of players lacking in personality is over, I think.

David Ortiz shows the world he is who we always thought he was.

Thanks to big pharma for beating the Asterisks, I guess?

I sure am glad that owning Asstros stock is not in my portfolio. And David Ortiz is now relegated to only being popular in the New England area alone, where cheater’s are accepted as they bring home the “it’s only a piece of metal” trophy’s as ill gotten gain. Red Sox will visit us too this season, and the fans will let them know that we know that cheating is not taken lightly on the “left” coast. Some games are just going to be more fun than others in ’20.

Mia

Exactly! And we shouldn’t be worried about the sensibilities of cheaters and their sympathizers. For the sport to move on, the Astros have to lose the title, otherwise you make the cost of cheating palatable. I worried about this back on the old site, that if they weren’t harsh enough in their punishment that it would just embolden others.

Manfred can still salvage this, he just has to make a statement that he didn’t feel like the Astros showed proper remorse and that he felt like more punishment was needed after listening to the players and fans.

Have to disagree, Mia. Manfred can’t solve this or anything else. He is toast. You can bet that the owners are burning up the cell phone minutes getting organized to dump him ASAP. I just hope they have learned from this debacle. It is never a good idea to make a freaking lawyer the face of your business. They have their place, but it isn’t running an organization!

If they fire him, the problem still stands. The punishment wasn’t enough.

So, either they bring in a new guy who will discipline them properly, or changing the commish won’t help the current opinion we all have of the office.

Vacating the Astros title would be nice. Even compared to the titles won in 2004, 2007, and 2009 where massive steroid cheats fueled runs the Astros look bad.

That was a couple of players on each team. The Astros was a team wide, organized effort.

Mia

I’m of the opinion that knowing what is coming is worse than steroids. Because, like you said, it’s not the whole team. In Houston most position players are tainted, the pitchers benefitted by pitching with more run support. It’s just a top to bottom cheating scheme.

And when a player gets caught on roids we actually punish them with suspensions. Ortiz can still get f**ked, though.

Cheating is Cheating, no degrees, no one to ten rating, no one being worse than another, CHEATING is never a course of action that is acceptable in any circumstance. Cheating is a ways and means of coming out one top for a reward and done against honest people. Cheating to win is stealing and rates right up there with lying. i raised a lot of children and everyone was taught the same way and l can trust each and everyone of them. I really do dislike Cheats, liars, and thieves and l do not believe in second chances in most cases.

Mia

Would you rather have your entire lineup know what pitch is coming, or have your #3 hitter on steroids? I know which one I’d choose, and it’s the more effective option. If I had no soul.

All cheating is bad, yes. Stuffing the ballot box to win homecoming queen and stuffing the ballot box to win a mayoral election are both cheating. One is worse than the other, though.

GrandpaBaseball

Reply to  Mia

l do not see it as a choice to determine if it is cheating. Both are cheating, can’t be compared side by side because MLB slapped the hands of the cheaters in both scenarios. Cheating after the 1919 scandal was what saved the game along with Babe Ruth. Today like the Steroid Use Era were handled very poorly. The integrity of the game is in question, If severe penalties had come down for Steroid use for cheating maybe the sign stealing would not have happened but that is speculation only. In both cases there existed a fear of the Union and that is just wrong. Get it right in the next agreement and eliminate all cheating in the future. Being expelled from the game with no pay or future benefits being the penalty should do it.

Jeff Joiner

I’d hardly call purposely losing games cheating. That’s pretty much the polar opposite of cheating.

Yes, baseball had to establish credibility after the Black Sox. But nowadays the issue is guys trying too hard to win.

Manfred has botched this whole thing. Way too long between Red Sox punishment and the Astros. Now he’s just strung it out and it’s all going to reset the clock once he announces the results from the Red Sox. Everyday he waits, the worse it gets with the black cloud moving more and more over the start of the season.

Ortiz finished his age 40 season with a numbers that soared, which team mates is he the most afraid of exposing how he did it. It was Boston 2016 when Ortiz slashed .315/.401.620, numbers more akin to a late stage Barry Bonds then a 40 year old whose slugging when up 100 points, his BA when up 4o pts, his obp 50points, what was Ortiz on?

You’re right, only my respect for Glaus changed. But l’m not sure that the Angels knew, but it would be hard not to be aware of Steroid use today.
