LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Strikeouts

The Angels just straight up have to do something about all those strikeouts.

Peyton Olejnik got a mention in this Fangraphs AFL Pitching Scouting Report. The corresponding one about position players mentioned both Arjun Nimmala and Jake Munroe.

Looking back on the three team deal between the Angels, Reds, and Tampa Bay the Reds apparently won. Brock Burke pitched well for them. Josh Lowe was pretty so so for the Angels as we all saw. Gavin Lux was injured in spring training and never made it to the bigs in 2026.

The past seems to indicate that Albert Pujols will not be hired as field manager by the new regime.

Alex Anthopolous discusses the various soon to be free agents from the Braves roster.

Yesterday I linked about what clubs stand to gain if they extend a qualifying offer that gets rejected. Today I link what the penalty will be for teams who sign a free agent who rejected a qualifying offer.

Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin had surgery on his pinky finger.

Former Yankees hitting coach Dillon Lawson is now the Marlins hitting coach.

Agree with hiring Wash to work on defense. Who do we get for a hitting/not-randomly-waving-the-bat-around instructor?

The dodgers have come back from the brink before but last night’s game was huge for Milwaukee.

I figured Yamamoto’s starts as W’s for LA meaning the Brewers had to win 4 of the other 5 games. Not going to happen.

I’d still be Yamamoto wins his next start. But even assuming that, the Brew Crew would need to win 2 of the 4 games he does not start to advance. And that, even against Snell and Skubal, is doable.

We really need Snell to do a typical 5 inning, 100 pitch, leave a lot to the bullpen game tomorrow.

From the Fangraphs link Charles posted —

“Defensively, Nimmala didn’t look as spry as some of the other shortstop prospects in the league. He has great hands and a strong arm, but he’s a below-average runner, his approach to the ball looks labored, and his footwork isn’t clean. While it isn’t time to give up on him at short, I’m starting to think it’s more likely than not that he’ll need to slide over to third, and sooner rather than later.”

How about a move to 2nd? I can rock with an infield alignment of Baller/Cozart – Schanuel – Nimmala – Neto – Guzman

Or hire Wash to work with the minor kids in 2027. Quickly.

Old thinking. Gotta think bigger than that in terms of a rebuild of our minor league development and coaching.

Hire Washington as the big league infield coach and bench coach. Then pay him extra to install a defensive development program throughout the minor leagues.

Old thinking and too connected to the past in my opinion. I am not sure I believe anything that existed in the last decade+ is a good idea. I would start fully from scratch and build a completely different and new team.

Washington’s track record speaks for itself IMO. I’d love for him to influence the next wave of Angels players.

If he would create a series of drills and give the minor league coaches things to emphasize as the players were developed, that would be perfect IMO.

Thing is, I don’t think he would do that without some type of MLB gig. He can stay in SF as an infield coach if he wants. So we have to bring him here in an MLB capacity then utilize him to set up the minor league staff.

all these “drills” are things that every team has. It’s not a secret anymore. Not like Wash is inventing something new.

Pass. Just my opinion.

Washington sounds better in theory than practice. The D was still terrible during his tenure. He felt a little bit like Maddux 1.0 to me.

In a way, it’s cleaner whether he goes to 2B or 3B. It means there’s a spot for him and Neto.

Fewer strike outs?

Add more players like Schanuel and Meckler.

Luis Arraez at second base would be a godsend.

And I’m sticking with my Edmundo Sosa pick for third base. Tidy little 21.6% K rate is drastically lower than we’ve had at third base.

Neither of those guys walks at all, but they put the ball in play.

What happens to Guzman?

I want him entering next season as an unquestioned starter.

Jo Adell is having a material impact in Cleveland’s postseason run. Thru 6 games he’s slashing .250 / .333 / .458 w/ 8 RBIs.

Beyond my adulation for Jo, I think this Cleveland team has enough magic in them to go all the way. They play the same brand of scrappy baseball that y’all enjoy watching with Milwaukee and Tampa. Good luck to TB facing Messick and Williams in the next 2 games.

Moz made some good moves and less good moves at the deadline. This was one of the less good ones. I okay with trading Adell but the return should have been better.

Jo isn’t good though. He’s having a fine playoffs, but paying him $10 mil to ne a below average player is meh.

I like Cozart. Defensely ready for the bigs, and has some pop to work with

I actually think this was a win-win-win trade for both teams and player.

I wonder what Adell’s value was last offseason coming off 38 💣 and 115 OPS+? Probably brings back more than just Cozart imo
