Angels’ Win vs Rays is Approved!

Next man up is the common phrase teams say when injuries happen. For competent teams, this can be a rallying cry, as the players that get playing time were waiting for the opportunity and ready to prove their worth. On incompetent teams, well, it can be a dark humor way of thinking, as a “Someone has to do it” kind of way.

The Angels are of course incompetent. Last in the pathetic AL West, without even a .500 season since 2015. A team where prospects who were busts and old vets looking for one last season end up as a team of misfits. If you want playing time, it is the perfect team to play for as injury or suckage will open an opportunity.

But maybe, just maybe, a team in such a state can win a few games anyway. Not many, not for long, but enough so that the fans who watch can enjoy a bit of hope before having it crushed by reality. Most bad teams have a stretch of this in Baseball due to the length of the season. Are the Angels in the middle of one right now?

It all starts with the SP. Sam Aldegheri got the start. The Italian pitcher had a good WBC and got rewarded with an up and down 2026. Spot start here, bullpen there, not needed and sent down and repeat. With injuries to the rotation he has the chance to prove it again, and he certainly showed the fans that he deserved it. He went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 4 and walking 3. Against the Rays? WOW. You take that.

APPROVED!

Highlighted Recap

As the game was about to start, the team reminded us of something more exciting. SPACE.

Nice first pitch

Angels took inspiration, and found space in the OF for a 2 run triple in the 1st.

2-0 Angels

They added on in the 3rd

3-0

And after a SB, a 4th run

4-0 Angels

So that is hitting doing well. What about defense? Guzman provided that with a good play.

At least he can field

How about pitching? That was going great… until the 5th, when Sam loaded the bases and allowed 2 runs on a bloop single. It could have been WAY worse though.

4-2 Angels

Sam’s 5 innings of just 2 ER was pretty good. Would have wanted longer, and if the 5th wasn’t stressful, he would have pitched more, but he was pulled for Silseth, who pitched a clean 6th, then Farris, who did a clean 7th and 8. Well, mostly. The Angels got a BIG break when the ABS system broke down and the Rays couldn’t challenge at the plate.

Better to be lucky than good

To make up for it, Adell allowed the Rays to rob him of a home run in the bottom of the 8th.

Bruh

Farris pitched the 9th, getting 2 out and 2 on, and allowed a run.

4-3 Angels

Game on the line, Suzuki went to Zeferjahn. WHY!? Last year sure, THIS YEAR?! WHY?!?!! He walked the bases loaded and then, with 2 strikes he STRUCK HIM OUT!

ANGELS WIN SOMEHOW!

Upcoming

More Rays at Angels this weekend. Not Devil Rays vs Angels. That would be cooler.

Tonight’s lineup. With Soriano on the mound, I like our odds to win tonight and secure the series win versus the 1st place Ray.

The recent call-ups have provided a bit of spark.

Didn’t Denzer get two hits last night?

C’mon, bruhs, a prospect going 0-for in two games is par for the course. You have to give them weeks and months of rope, not two games. It’s a 22 year old facing the world’s best pitchers, often for the first time.

Houston has given Cam Smith 750+ plate appearances at 3B, and he’s still a wee 23 years old, and hitting .220. It takes time for guys to round into form.

Rather than look at hits and runs, I’d monitor contact and zone coverage with Guzman, which was his weakness last year, especially during his first cup of coffee.

It’s only 14 plate appearances, but he’s only struck out twice (once on a curveball in the shadow zone, once on a sweeper away). His in-zone contact rate is 92% (MLB average is 85%). Five of the balls he put in play were hard hit. Small sample size, but if fans are judging him on small sample sizes, that’s better contact and zone awareness than the very good rate stats he was exhibiting at AAA.

If he can sustain that, balls are going to find holes.

Absolutely. I said in the game thread last night (before his first hit) that he looks good at the plate and just needs the balls to fall in. Strikeout rate is promising so far.

We really need Wash back for no other reason than to talk to Neto about what a jackass he’s been all season.

Dirt is the worst possible type of manager for a player like him. He needs some tough love, not a surf buddy.

How about the Halos just trade Neto while he still has value and we never speak of Wash again.

He was supposed to teach fundamentals. However, no one on the team could bunt and then he blamed the players.

Yeah I didn’t necessarily love that approach either, but I would prefer that over the complete and total lack of discipline under Suzuki.

I think Neto in particular needs someone to push him around like that.

Rotation is the biggest enemy to the tank. Meckler, Siri, Mancini, Madrigal will crash back to earth soon enough.

Pedroia is one of my all time favorites. Love guys like him, Eckstein, Altuve, Dykstra, etc, play with such an engine. That’s what was expected of Madrigal and why he went so high. I doubt he’s back with us next year, but he’s showing what people saw. He’s showing signs of being a difference maker. I would love him on the Angels – I really would. I think guys like that have an effect beyond their stats on how they rub off on the other players. With that said, he’s absolutely the type of guy teams like for a playoff run. We should get a reasonable prospect for him even though he has no number on BTV for some reason. The other thing is to give him a deal -which will still be relatively cheap and have him in your locker room for 5 years.

Mis is an absolute freak. A Maddox with 15k’s is crazy. 104.5 – crazy. 103 on final pitch -the craziest of crazy. Please keep the tank on – so next year we can get Striker Pence who has reclassed as a 2027.

Just like Joyce found out, the arm and shoulder only has a limited amount of lightning.

The true freak was Nolan Ryan. He was throwing bullets at age 40 and never experienced a major arm or shoulder injury.

He threw a mid-80’s ceremonial pitch in his 60’s!

Roy Hobbs

In addition to being a freak of nature, he trained really well with his arm in a bucket of rice, and I don’t know if anyone paid attention to that. He had great mechanics and he threw traditional pitches. Some of the pitches guys throw today put tremendous stress on your arm.

HalosFanForLife

The wild thing is some guys throw hard and barely have issues, but clearly almost all of them do have injuries. To me, Skenes and Mis make their velo look so easy – where other guys look strenuous. Doyle, for instance, looks very strenuous to me. Joyce does too. Ryan made it look easy. Of course it’s all the work not in games that makes it look easier than it is.

Really good point. Many pitchers back in the day didn’t become pitchers until after being drafted out of HS. Kids now start pitching at 8 years old and very early are throwing breaking balls.

That and pretty much with travel ball these kids play year round. When I was growing up it was seasonal. All the kids who played baseball played other sports in the off season.

4–1 in our last 5. Only loss directly caused by Suzuki running old man Yates out there in the 9th to blow his chance at career save 100.

Starting pitching is showing its teeth and will keep us in most games.

28.1 innings
2.54 ERA
1.06 WHIP

MLB: Sori, Detmers, Urena, GRod, Aldegheri
MLB IL: Kikuchi (shoulder), Silent C (TJS)
AAA: Dana, Klassen
AA: R Johnson, Hurtado

Bachman since 4/29
17 innings
1 ER
14 inherited runners
1 inherited runner scored

Silseth since 4/29
14.1 innings
1 ER
15 inherited runners
6 inherited runners scored

Lastly, our hitting is borderline watchable without Soler, Moncada, and Lowe (tearing up AAA).

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us continue this mini run into something bigger. We’re light on bullpen arms, our lineup is patched together by AAAA players, and Suzuki is an AI chatbot personified, but the starting pitching is legit.

When we send our AAAA players back down, we will go back to losing almost every game. Replacing Adell, Schanuel, O’Hoppe, Moncada, and Lowe will go a long way towards improving the team, even if it’s with other guys on our current 40 man.

Winning isn’t a priority so I’m not benching any of the younger dudes this season. Schanuel hasn’t been healthy once this year and needs to put on the IL immediately. O’Hoppe’s bat is showing some signs of potency this month. Maybe his broken hand has healed? Adell is killing me, but he has 6 more weeks of JOne and JOly to get hot.

No reason to ever see Soler, Moncada, Lowe again.

I agree with you in general, but I’m pretty sure that Soler, Moncada, and maybe even Lowe, will be back in the line up once healthy unless Perry and Kurt have an epiphany. It will be interesting to see what happens.

If I were moving forward and trying to build a winning team, I would not have Adell, and Schanuel on the roster next year and I’m good with O’Hoppe as the 2nd catcher for now.

Let Madrigal, Pazuzu or Trout leadoff. Duh.

Well, yes, of course. I have been saying this for a couple of months. First off, he strikes out way too much to be a leadoff hitter. Waaay too undisciplined, even though his pitches seen per AB is not bad. Your leadoff guy should not be such a free swinger. This is obvious.

Next, moving him down in the order can send a message like “Look Zach, don’t be so entitled and full of yourself. You have to EARN a privileged position on this team, such as regularly hitting top three in the batting order.” I’d move him to 6th where he was for one game a little while back. Maybe this wakes him up and causes him to focus more on each AB and not just swing for the fences etc.

Neto should be benched for few days and made to read a baseball manual about running hard even if you think an out is going to be made or your ball is going over the fence.

Starting pitching came thru once again.

Can we have a serious conversation about Neto? Just in today’s game he had another terrible error and K’d 4 times. The one time he made contact he decided to to walk out of the box costing himself 2nd. He plays the game like a child and is in desperate need of an ego check

I said in the game thread that he needs a ball buster to get him in check. We all know Dirt wouldn’t dare coach him up.

Sac bunting to set up Neto is the single dumbest thing I think I’ve ever seen a manager do. Maybe worse than an IBB with the bases loaded.

And he put icing on top with the bullpen management. The dude is an imbecile. We won in spite of his asshattery.
