There was no score for many innings. Mike Trout did make this cool catch.
At the end of the fifth inning each team was working a one hit shutout. Zach Neto led off the sixth inning with a hit. Andy Pages got the Dodgers second hit but he was thrown out stealing second. Chase Silseth came in to pitch the seventh inning. After eight and a half scoreless innings, the Angels brought in Kirby Yates to serve up a walk off homer ball to Freddie Freeman. The Dodgers won 1-0.

These SEC guys are bigger than MLB players. Just huge dudes. I think it’s because size plays with these BBCOR bats.
Georgia in particular always recruits for mashers, because they really play in that park. But many of them don’t translate to the MLB, so there’s a lot of fool’s gold in that system when one approaches the draft.
Of Georgia’s four best hitters last year, three were draft eligible, and the Angels drafted two of them (Slate Alford in the 10th rd, Ryland Zaborowski as an NDFA). NYC acquired the other (Robbie Burnett) as an NDFA, and still hasn’t played him yet.
Both Slate and Ryland are at low-A, Slate struggling, and Ryland cruising, but as a 24 yr old hitting teenage pitching.

I like the lead changes more than the bombs. I think at this stage college should go wood. They could use the synthetics like Baum – but the sweet spots are so big on those bats.
Yeah, I’d like to see that, especially in the CWS. Have to always look at deltas between the Cape and D1 results, because so much of the success of some of these guys is down to the playing equipment.
Totally agree. That’s why these big guys that hit the ball hard here – don’t always play. Take Grahovac and Hacopian, I think they are both high risk/high reward guys. I’ve seen them both hit bombs under the label – and that don’t play with wood.
Why do they continue to use non wood bats
Mostly economic reasons. Metal bats are cheaper and last longer. A lot of baseball programs at smaller institutions are just trying to stay solvent and alive. It seems like a small difference, but replacing hundreds of broken wood bats each season costs thousands of dollars.
A lot of the metal bats are actually provided for free to college athletic depts on corporate sponsorships. It costs little for the manufacturers, and metal bats are super durable.
Last reason: they produce more offense. For the same reasons the MLB keeps tinkering to produce more balls in play, metal bats result in high exit velocities and more longballs, and that brings [more chicks to the yard], uh….more people to the stadium and to TV games.
NCAA has used metal bats for 50+ years.
I knew the entertainment aspect, I wasn’t sure about cost difference after such a long time. I played baseball with wood bats all the way through and softball first with wood and then aluminum. My kids used metal only. The record for home runs at my HS was 3 when I went there and it stood for ten years until my junior year when a guy hit 5. Back in the day hitting the ball over the fence with a wood bat was a significant accomplishment. When my sons played in HS guys hit more than 20 HRs in a season with metal bats.
More chicks to the yard. Yep. Chicks dig the long ball. Economics isn’t a problem with the composite wood bats. They may break less than some of the regular composites. The Baum and the Louisville composite basically don’t break. My kid trains every day with his Baum and has had it two years. The Louisville RA13 is considered perhaps even more durable. And they are $300. The most common bats in college this year are the Combat, Select Power and the Goods. Pretty much $350 to $500.
Well, as of last year, the NCAA was still evangelizing that it was largely an economic issue, and are pretty fussy in the regulations about the precise dimensions and surface details of a permitted bat. I imagine even slight dings to a composite wood bat would trouble the rulemakers.
If they even wanted to change, of course.

Mike Trout should be available, but there’s no indication owner Arte Moreno has relented on his unwillingness to move his franchise player. With the failures of a majority of their cheap offseason signings, the Angels are left with Jorge Soler, Kirby Yates and Adam Frazier as their movable free agents. Perhaps they dip into highly controllable players to deepen their future talent pool, but such deals — whether it’s outfielder Jo Adell, who’s a year from free agency, or breakout infielder Oswald Peraza or strong-armed relievers Sam Bachman and Ryan Zeferjahn — are not the sort of thing the Angels have considered in past seasons. I was not for trading Trout but it’s gotten to the point where he is keeping therefrom moving forward because he doesn’t want to move out of CF and they won’t make him.

Angels held their own vs the Juggernaut that is the dogers. We are waisting Reid Detmers who held the gold standard hitless for a while and scoreless. We got beat by World Series hero Freddie Freeman. Angels offense didn’t show up and Trout Sucked. But we were in it all game. No blow out, no game over (Ballgame) being said. This was a game that we could have won fielded by a team of castoffs, retreads and last minute subs. This was a game most weren’t expecting. I was invested throughout. No need to hang you head here.

Trade them why ? To what end ? That won’t change our coaching and development in the minors. Trading them won’t shift the piss poor management of baseball operations at all levels. The fans should at least be able to get some enjoyment from watching the few players we have with talent and ability that we drafted and that came up in our org.
Trading away our best young players for pennies on the dollar doesn’t change anything. It makes it worse.
Short-term pain for long-term gain. It would be the opposite of selling for pennies, we’d be trading them at peak value.
Are any fans actually enjoying this? Lose 100 games with Soriano, Detmers, Bachman or lose 110 games without them and get an injection of prospects into the system.
Questions to ponder — Are we committed to paying Soriano and Detmers after 2028? Do they even want to stick around?

You are saying “peak value” but the reality is that once a team puts a player on the market and it is known that the owner wants out, then the buyer has the leverage. No way for instance we would get back close to equal value for a player like Soriano. This is one of if not the main reason I tend to be anti-trade….
You don’t trade for the sake of trading, you trade if you get back what you need and the buyer would not have leverage.

There are no bargains in Free Agency unless you pick them right. Last year’s free agency windfalls will make players more patient to wait out free agency. Detroit should have ponied up and not been so cheap in their offer to Skubal. Everyone will be pointing to that deal moving forward. Get the value now. Imagine Imagine picking up 4 of these studs and having a new owner committed to winning with basically only Trout as your big contract. 2028 could look very different. Keep Trout – sell the rest. Love Neto over arb years, but that’s why you get value. Lots of stuff to move before the deadline. Get off the unicorn and sell.
Have to identify who the right guys are and match with clubs that are going for it. The Dodgers, Yankees, and Brewers at least would be likely trade partners. A lot of these tams might not be trading because they are not competing.
For sure – but there will be plenty of teams looking for some of our pieces. Pretty much every playoff team could use Detmers or Soriano. A few teams could use Neto for sure. Will they mortgage the future to win now is the question. Since we are more than a year away, it’s no brainer moves for us – especially if Arte is now going to sit on his checkbook.
