Anyone miss the Devil Rays? I thought it was so cool to have Angels vs Devils in the AL and it was thematically interesting. Yeah, yeah, they were Devil RAYS, the stingray, but still. Even though it is a cooler name, their fans won’t want to go back as dropping the devil made them actually win.
What would be nice is if a name change would make the Angels win. The last time the Los Angeles Angels had a winning record was in 1964. I am serious. Since dropping Anaheim from the name, this team has not even won 81 games in a year let alone 82. even going back to the mocking “Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim” would be better.
It would also be better if the Angels SP can last long. Instead, Jack Knocked himself out early going only 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, striking out 1 and walking 4. The Angels being so utterly bad at ABS challenges did not help, nor were the umps willing to make it easy for them. Bullpen game it was, which is not a strength on this team at all.
Highlighted Recap
Things got bad early with a Ray’s home run
But the Angels rebounded and got gifted a run on a wild pitch to tie it
But things went south in the 3rd. Loading the bases, then allowing a hit is bad.
Walking the next guy is even worse.
Having to pull your starter is worst. Wait, no, what would be worst would be the RP almost getting out of it but allowing a grand slam. Which did not happen because Siri robbed the home run!
A bullpen game against the Rays and I am not feeling so good about this…
Yet, somehow, someway, it was still close, and it got closer with Logan’s home run in the 7th.
The bottom of the 7th was filled with bad luck as, SOMEHOW, Neto didn’t touch 2B when fielding a ball and thus there were no outs? Huh?
Which meant that instead of 1 on 1 out, it was 2 on no outs and yeah, that run came to score.
And a bases loaded walk brought in the other runner.
Down 5-2, the Angels tried to claw back in the top of the 8th, but a lineout double play squandered that.
The Angels tried again in the 9th, but alas, was not able to do it. Angels lose.
Upcoming
Angels head back home and face the Rockies. Road Rockies are horrible, so this is the Angels’ chance to disappoint us.
Tough day for California college ball today – UCLA and UCSB both eliminated now.
Meanwhile, OK defeated powerhouse Georgia Tech tonight, which was a surprise, given how dominant the #2 ranked team has been. Oklahoma has to do it one more time to advance, but it seems within their power.
I still hope GT pulls it out, because Burress, Lackey, Kerce and Advincula make it to Omaha.
Ung. Friggin orange cows.
When did Mick Cronin start coaching UCLA baseball?
UCLA out, congrats St Mary’s!
All weekend, UCLA has looked like the most overrated team in a decade. Disastrous with RISP, suspect defense, porous bullpen.
The four seed they just lost to twice was shellacked by Cal Poly last night, 14-1. UCLA should have owned them from the get-go, but looked like a team that shouldn’t even have qualified for the regionals most of the weekend.
I’m a Purdue alum and was following closely because they were a bubble team this year (but ultimately didn’t make the field).
Purdue nearly took down UCLA in the Big Ten Tournament, so the cracks were starting to show. UCLA walked it off after a late come back.
Yeah, they were definitely looking shaky late in the season, and not having Reddemann certainly hurt their rotation. But losing twice to the four seed, and being walked off in an elimination game in your regional – unprecedented and humiliating.
who’d a thought, either St. Mary’s or Cal Poly is coming out of this regional. As mentioned too many times, I’m most interested in the Eugene regional where the Beavers and Ducks will play in an hour and then again tomorrow if the Beavs can win this one. Ducks can send out their #3 pitcher while the Beavers use their #5. Fourth game but #1 is done for the season.
I’m watching the Georgia Tech game at the moment, and they’re losing to Oklahoma, which would just continue the string of upsets thus far. But it’s a football score so far, so I could see the lead changing a couple more times.
Lackey doing some damage?
Lackey absolutely crushed one over the centerfield scoreboard this weekend.
Honestly, if I were a team with the first or second pick in this draft, I’d be thinking long about selecting Vahn over Roch. He’s a serious talent.
He was someone I hoped would slip – but he just keeps delivering and likely moving up the board. Good backstops are hard to find. A plus defender that can hit is hard to find.
The whole package is a bit of a miracle.
A 20 yr old catcher hitting .412/.531/.801 with a 13% K rate? A 177 wRC+. Dude even has 15 steals.
Seems like a solid case for 1-1 in the draft.
Who are you rooting for?
Beavers first. Beyond that west coast teams in general
Wasn’t sure when it was two Oregon schools head to head
Great first round. Looking like there will be quite a few Monday games. College World Series is the best. So many times underdogs knock off great teams.
Valenzuela and Lee are two salty veteran coaches. When I saw the teams in this bracket – I knew UCLA could get challenged. Putting two California mid majors in their bracket was not fair for a number one seed.
Neto’s regression defensively is something else. He was at least league average a couple years ago, probably slightly above average at short. This year has been an absolute disaster for him.
think I’ll stop what I’m doing and check out UCLA-St. Mary’s. 5-4 in the 9th. Meanwhile Beavers look like they’ll win comfortably and face Oregon in a couple of hours. USC ahead, UCSB with a slim lead over Texas
still, we’ve won a bunch of games, 6-3 in the last 9 and now we’re 5th worst, not 1st worst.
Kind of wish Siri hadn’t caught that un-grand slam. If the ball had landed it would have taken out that buffet table full of food.
LOL I thought the exact same thing
That makes three sadistic Halo fans. 😄
I’ll repeat what I said elsewhere. It’s virtually impossible to win games when stiffs like Silent C(rap) are pitching, Soler is playing, Neto is playing bad defense and Trout refuses to swing at meatballs.
Soler is the Angels Giancarlo Stanton but a worse defender. Exactly the type of player this team doesn’t need. He should have never been signed in the first place unless it was on a minor league deal. Just a really dumb signing from a baseball perspective.
Sure. Though Stanton is a better hitter than Soler and the Yanks are a better team.
…well….there is that…
I do miss Simba.

Silent C is Silent But Deadly. He just reeks.
