LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Elite Speed

Mike Trout says he has more in the tank and expects to return to elite sprint speed. Zach Neto extension?

It’s official. The Blue Jays signed Max Scherzer.

Here are the power rankings for the teams in the World Baseball Classic. Here is the schedule. Spring Breakout will be a single elimination tournament this year.

The Dodgers dismissed Keston Hiura, Chuckie Robinson, and several other guys from major league spring training and reassigned them to minor league camp. Gavin Stone has had a setback in his surgically repaired shoulder.

The Cubs claimed infielder Ben Cowles off waivers from the Blue Jays. The Royals just DFAd outfielder Dairon Blanco to make room for Starling Marte.

The Padres shut down catcher Blake Hunt due to an oblique injury. They shut right-hander Bryan Hoeing down due to elbow discomfort. The Padres also signed Alex Verdugo to a minor league deal.

Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for killing his in-laws.

Walking my dog and watching the local high school team. Spring is the best time of year

The start of this year, concerning sports, has been amazing. We had a fantastic CFP and NFL postseason. The Winter Olympics were awesome. And now we have baseball back, with spring training and the WBC, and March Madness is getting ready to ramp up. I just hope the Angels can hold my attention until the Tour De France starts lol

If the Halos can’t beat out a bunch of guys on 10-speeds and tight shorts, we really are in bad shape.

I’m more into watching the countryside from the helicopter cam than I am into the actual race. With that being said, go Tadej

Also, the World Cup. For me, right up there with March Madness, bring it on!

Jurickson “The Next Trout” Profar. ANOTHER PED suspension. For 162 games. Not the Braves fans favorite signing….

😲😲😲😲 He shouldn’t be eating from the snack bar at the Dominican ball fields in the offseason.

Jurickson “former Rockies Great” Profar. He’s a solid immaculate grid guy

Today’s Spring Training game has the Angels vs. Jerry’s Aquabats. Since it is spring training, I will set the Angels runs scored Over/Under at 4.5 (during the regular season I would probably set that 2.5).

I’m just happy we didn’t make the ultimate pathetic move and sign Verlander or Max.

That’s dope. USA has Skenes, Skubal and Webb and nasty Mason Miller to clean it up. Heavily favored to win it all. The team is not even USAs best talent, unlike other nations who threw everything at it.

That Dominican team has good bats with manager Pujols at the helm. Pitching is nowhere nears USAs. Of course, Japan will be there but with Skenes or Skuball, can match up well with Yamamoto or Ohtani.

Excited to see Judge and Harper too. Tomorrow they play the Rockies at Salt River Fields. I love seeing Team USA play exhibitions here in AZ, previously 2006 and 2023, but all this time I figured their exhibitions and camp would be in Florida this year since that’s where the tournament is. And without Mike I wasn’t paying too close of attention.

a nice gathering of future HOFers.

Ohtani isn’t pitching in the WBC

Skubal is only pitching one game (against GB) and 55 pitches

Had not heard that and I would say that certainly looks like betting on the underdogs is a potential smart move

The USA team would be solid on the pitching front if Skubal was going to pitch more than once. We’ll probably see Kershaw toss more innings than anyone else and we all know how horribly he pitches outside of the regular season

With Mike Trout likely heading back to center field this season, Adell will transition back to his regular spot in right. And after a season when his foot speed was far from his best, he says his burst is back.

“I move pretty well,” Adell said. “I’m still at 28, 29 feet per second moving down the line so I can move.”

A full sprint this season, without the hurdles from a year ago, suggests the best is yet to come.

“I feel pretty good about getting back into right and getting back in where I have a comfort level in that corner and being able to cover ground,” Adell said. “So I’m excited to kind of just get back in that comfort zone and have Mike lock it down in center field. I know he’s excited to get back out there as well.”

“We need to help Mike — and we all pointed at Mike — get to the postseason,” Neto said. “He is, if not the greatest player to play this game, one of them. He needs to be in the playoffs.”

Baseball Prospectus projects the Angels to lose 95 games this year, the most in the American League. As we said, Neto is supremely confident.

“We all know and we all believe that, if we play with each other, and if we play how we want to play, there is nobody that can beat us,” he said.

You have to admire Neto’s confidence. Certainly, we don’t want players on our team who know that 95 losses are probable.

Liar. Clearly Neto thinks that he’s the smartest guy in the room. He likely thinks I’m not so smart and stuff. I am angry.

Random notes:

Detmers says he wants to reinsert his changeup back into his arsenal — I’ll believe it when I see it. He threw 2 of em in his last start.

Bremner has been working on adding a cutter to his fastball, changeup, slider. Hopefully we see him debut this week.

CMo getting time at 3rd is very interesting. You know Moncada is gonna get hurt eventually and in that case we can slide CMo over and fill 2nd with Paris/Grissom. Paris is having another strong Spring, and from the 2 games I’ve been able to watch he looks good and very fast. Presently, I still have CMo as the starting 2nd and Grissom + Peraza on the bench. Frazier and Madrigal are competing well too.

O’Hoppe doesn’t look completely lost at the plate. He’s being insulated with support in Suzuki and Stassi. Is the breakout happening this year?

Silseth has rebounded strongly in his last 2 appearances and should make the team imo.

I’ll take the 2B who strikes out the least. Need to change last year’s offense.

I would love to get back on the O’Hoppe wagon. Improve upon pitch recognition, not chase, and don’t try to hit home runs.

I just plain really like O’Hoppe and Neto. The main reason I hope for “magic prospect break outs” from some I guys I can’t even think of right now is so that it makes sense to keep those guys. They are great dudes who will lead a team well.

If Neto stays good and O’Hoppe gets good and the future isn’t a complete dead end I’d extend them both. I’d even do something risky, like if a pile of our young arms break out this year I’d trade Detmers and Soriano for MLB ready position prospects and see if we can get competitive in 2029 with those two locked down for a couple extra years.
