Now It’s Over Postgame

Here is the Angels fielding alignment behind Sam Aldegheri today.

After today the hurting stops for a little while, at least until Perry hires the next washed up outfielder to a multi-year contract..

Sam Aldegheri struck out the leadoff man but then gave up a single, a hit batsman and another single to make it 1-0 Astros. He struck out one more and then hit one more to load the bases. Barry Enright made a mound meeting at this point. Ramon Urias grounded to Rengifo at third who got the force out at second base.

Luis Rengifo grounded out to first. Mike Trout jacked one deep to left centerfield. Tie game.

Jo Adell struck out. Chris Taylor grounded out to third.

In the second inning, Aldegheri struck out the leadoff hitter and gave up a walk. He was over 40 pitches with only one out in the second inning. Jacob Melton, who had walked, stole second base. Zach Cole also walked. Mauricio Dubon flied out. A strikeout ended the Astros second.

A fly out, a groundout, and a grounder to third that was bobbled put Sebastian Rivero on first with two outs. Denzer Guzman singled. Bryce Teodosio walked to load the bases for Luis Rengifo, who struck out. Some people thought this wasn’t a styrike. What do you think?

If it was a ball, Rengifo would have had an RBI walk. The Astros failed to score in the next inning.

The Angels pinch hit Logan O’Hoppe for Mike Trout in the third inning. The Angels went three up three down. Colton Gordon came in to pitch against the Angels in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Angels couldn’t buy a hit after that.

There was no further scoring until Yainer Diaz homered in the top of the fifth inning. 2-1 Astros. Aldegheri gave up a single, a double, and another homer before getting pulled from the game. 4-1 Astros. Connor Brogdon gave up another homer to the next batter. 5-1 Astros. Jacob Melton singled but then was caught stealing to end the top of the fifth inning.

The Angels did nothing with their half of the fifth inning. Connor Brogdon gave up another homer in the top of the sixth to make it 6-1 Astros. Jo Adell was robbed of a home run in the bottom of the sixth. We headed into the seventh inning with the score still 6-1 Astros.

Z-Boy came in to pitch. He got two outs and then issued a four pitch walk to Ramon Urias. Brice Matthews singled and then stole second base. The Astros failed to score.

In the ninth Jayden Murphy came in to pitch. Jo Adell finally got a hit. So did Chris Taylor. Adell advanced to third on a fly ball out by Christian Moore. Carter Kieboom got a base hit to center. Jo Adell scored. 6-2 Astros. Sebastian Rivero got an infield hit. The bases were loaded with one out. Denzer Guzman struck out. Taylor Ward came in to pinch hit for Bryce Teodosio. He struck out looking with the bases loaded. The Angels lost by four runs.

Well, in just a few short months, I’ll find another Hopium or Ignoritall dealer and start my fixes starting off with some underwhelming FA signings and going into Spring Training hype.

Just say no. I say that in jest but with a drop of seriousness. I am afraid the only chance we have of Arte selling is for all of us (and the entire fan base) to stop showing up which includes giving up the Hopium.

Neto and Ward had the highest OPS, Trout had the highest OPS+. We had 6 guys with an OPS+ of 100 or more, with 107 being the lowest of those. The next highest was Lugo at 90. Soler and CMo in the 80s, O’Hoppe and Heefo in the 70s.

Stephenson threw 10 innings. I guess there are 100 ways to dissect what went wrong.

As the season was coming to a close I would question whether to put on my Angels shirt because they aren’t exactly a team that makes you feel like a winner supporting them. I did anyway and got a comment asking “weren’t they pretty good in the early 2000’s?”. Not the best feeling in the world. Thanks Art ✌🏻yay

Well, another season of Groundhog Day is in the can. Almost 25 years worth of poor management, suboptimal trades and acquisitions, performance deficiencies, and inconsistency galore.

From what I can surmise, we’ll be watching again next year. Maybe six months from now, I’ll be ready to watch again.

Maybe.

i have the feeling Arte won’t be able to sell until the Skaggs litigation is over. At that point it would be logical for him to sell out. He will be 80 pretty soon. This team needs a top to bottom overhaul, except for the ushers and the ticket takers. Most of the concession people are OK, too.

Drafting 12th is fine. As we saw this year, drafting 2nd, we took a guy ranked 26th. Predict we’ll get closer to the norm this year.

Curious who ranked Bremner as low as #26? He was a consensus early to mid-first rounder in most of the industry rankings.

D1 Baseball – 6
Fangraphs – 7
Baseball America – 11
Just Baseball – 13
Perfect Game – 15
The Athletic – 16
MLB Pipeline – 18
ESPN – 18

Those are the eight prospect publications I follow most consistently. And in Feb/March, several of those pubs had Bremner as a top five prospect. He didn’t slide that far after that.

Nice to see Trout rise in the last week of the season.

Maybe we can do 11 game better next season?

Trout was actually really solid across all of September.

Unlike most here, I am not blaming Trout as much as the medical staff. They seemed clueless on how to treat him correctly.

With all the digital, AI and “Hitting coaches” Trout had to (It seems like) figure it out on his own?

Sheesh

I am not convinced Trout figured anything out. It’s just that for about a week, a few of his swings connected and the ball flew far. We would need a much bigger sample size to determine if this is the good luck that followed bad luck and what is real. But we will not get that because the only contact with a ball Trout will be making for 6 months or so will be with a golf ball.

Frankly, until Trout starts spraying the ball and hitting doubles to the alleys, I do not think we can say he figured anything out. Swinging out of his shoes for HRs and connecting once in a while (while also striking out a lot) is not figuring anything out. This was a common problem on the team this year.

Having a top 10 farm helps – they keep graduating guys that allow them to contend on a budget.

The Reds were the club I most wanted the Halos to trade with at the deadline, before Perry decided to make things meaningful through inertia.

The NL Central? Three of the six playoff contenders came from that division, and Milwaukee had the best record in the MLB. The Cubs were quite good, and the worst team in the division, the Pirates, were no worse than the Angels really.

To a certain extent, we diehards share some blame because for this travesty of a franchise as we keep paying attention to Arturo’s pathetic team. Some of us even contribute to his wealth.

As a UCLA alum, I no longer watch or attend their games or contribute $$. Maybe next year will be the same for my Halos unless and until wholesale changes are made.

In many ways, this was the worst season ever, and I’ve been a fan since 1961. I didn’t enjoy it at all.

Enjoy the offseason everybody. Per my custom, I ignore the playoffs whenever we’re not in.

I, too, am a Bruin.
And, I do not like the direction that UCLA administration is heading, in general. Instead of doing what’s good for students, they are going what’s good for their pocketbooks.

As for sports, we are about to get our first ever 0-12 football season.
Who in the world hires DeShaun Foster as head coach. Although he was a great Bruins RB, he had no head coaching experience at all!

As to the Foster hire, it was a total mystery. They let go a coach who had been to a national title game, had significant experience both in college and the NFL, and had an offensive system that could score points. Kelly wasn’t perfect but he was a credible coach. Foster was a strange hire except based on his UCLA pedigree. They need a fully experienced head coach. And they likely won’t get one. The basketball team at least has that.

Kelly wasn’t let go; he left on his own. He didn’t want to deal with the NIL BS, and he didn’t like recruiting. It’s easy to defer that stuff when you’ve got Nike money coming into the program like he did at UCLA.

The AD, both guerrero and jarmond, in addition to chancellor block, are to blame for the current state of UCLA football.

Foster never should have been hired. It was an oh, fuck, I’ve got to do something move by the AD because he got caught flat-footed when Kelly bolted to Ohio State. Fost had never even been a coordinator, why the hell do you make him the head coach?!?!?! It defies logic.

The problem now is that the AD is still part of the search committee for the new HC. Jarmond should’ve been fired as well.

The one small sliver of hope is that the new chancellor understands the importance of funding the athletic department and the football program accordingly, as it leads to greater overall revenue. He learned that when he was the President of the University of Miami, which is where UCLA hired him from.

I meant to say it’s easy to defer recruiting and other recruiting activities (even though NIL did not exist when Kelly was at Oregon) when you’ve got Nike money flooding the athletic department, specifically the football program.

I’m in no way stumping for the angels. I took the kids to SF & SD this year for baseball. Next year we will make those same trips, while adding SEA & ATH. The angels do offer me the best dollar value to take them to a sporting event. I paid $20 for 4 tix last night (tick pick), used my $20 Karl Strauss parking voucher to get food, spent maybe $40 in the stadium (stickers for my kids sticker wall & sweet treats).

Taking them to 49ers, All Blacks, Kings hockey & traveling to see other baseball teams/parks are all far more expensive.

That’s about it. Everything else from what’s on the field, to who’s running every department is Åtrocious.

In the last quarter of a century, I can’t remember another journalist on the Angels beat that is more of an advocate of the *Angels fan* than Sam Blum. Not the owner, not the team, not the office flacks – but the fans. In fact, from Lyle to Jeff Fletcher, there’ve been many journos that are simply outright hostile to Angels fans, snarking on or belittling those who do not flatter the front office and ownership, or cheerlead really bad teams.

Blum basically makes the suffering of the average Angels fan audible and visible. Some just don’t want the truth aired in public – and some find the transparency *repetitive*, but a decade-plus of losing is fucking repetitive.

(And that’s my monthly use of the fitting and necessary qualifier for this club.)

I hope the Angels will not be signing Pete Alonso.
Sure, he hits homers.
He’ll be 31-y/o by 2026 Opening Day.

Fortunately, he’s looking for more than the $24M/yr that’s already baked into his Mets contract, which he’ll be opting out of.

The Guardians are a good example of a team decimated by injuries but has organizational depth, not a lot of great players but decent depth players and they just walked off down by 3 in the 10th inning. AL Central champions.

Good riddance. Hate to say it but- I’m not going to miss Angels baseball this offseason. It’s a crappy product from a crappy Org. I’m relieved this frustrating season- which followed the last frustrating season etc – is over.

If the team decides to skip the entirety of ‘26 to go fishing or play golf, I wouldn’t mind. I don’t get any pleasure from this Org.

All you suckers buying season tickets and giving Arte money will hopefully rethink that.

Now that hockey is starting, I am fine that the season is over. I look forward to next season, as I do every year.

I don’t have any expectations, so I can’t be disappointed. As long as the ArteChrist owns the team, it will be a mess.

Go Padres!

Angels will have 6th pick in all other rounds.

The 2025 Angels finished with the 5th highest team ERA in franchise history, excluding the shortened 2020 covid season. Thus 60 Angels teams in franchise history had lower team ERAs than this team.

And worst team batting average in team history.

5th worst team ERA.

Most team batters k’s in team history.

Most pitchers used in a season in team history.

Extended the years of longest consecutive losing seasons in franchise history.

Finished in last place again.

Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

But, wait, there’s more: Rengifo and 90% of the roster will be back for 2026.
Because, we improved on last year in terms of wins, and we’re trending upwards.

Do you think we pay Rengifo?

He got 9M this year – and I am not sure there isn’t better value out there. He is listed (at Spotrac) as a SS with an expect 10M payday. I don’t see the Angels paying that, and I can’t see them outbidding anyone else in any case.

I think Moncada, Jensen and Ward are more likely returns.
