Seattle Edges Angels 2-1

Tonight both the Angels and Mariners had their best starting pitchers on the mound and both were very effective.

Seattle’s Luis Castillo threw 6 innings of shutout baseball but was pulled after giving up a Luis Rengifo single to start the 7th inning. A stolen base by Rengifo set him up to score on a Logan Davidson double down the right field line. Rengifo’s run was charged to Castillo, netting the Mariners starter a stat line of 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 K, 2BB.

6 innings of 1 run ball is also true for Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi. The Japanese hurler allowed 4 hits, stuck out 3, and walked 1. The run scored in the bottom of the 4th inning when Jorge Polanco doubled in Cal Raleigh.

There weren’t a lot of highlights early on. Just good pitching and some nice defense:

As is the case far too often, the Angels failed to put up a shutdown inning after scoring. Conor Brogdon entered the game in the bottom of the 7th and served up a long home run to Mitch Garver.

The 2-1 Mariners lead proved to be the winning score. Brogdon put up a zero in the bottom of the 8th but by then the damage was done.

Seattle did not get any further ahead in the AL West as Houston pummeled the Braves earlier in the evening. Nor did Seattle’s lead over Texas grow as the Rangers beat the struggling Mets in New York.

Game 3 from Seattle is tomorrow at 6:40.

Angels have a -120 run differential and an expected win/loss record of 62-86. So, their record is 7 games better than expected. Guess that is what we have to consider to be a lucky season.

That fits what my Lyle-in eyes have been telling me. This team is last year’s team with better health and better luck.

I believe Kikuchi and Hendricks have brought some stability. Without those two, we’d be dead last, again.

Agreed. My eyeball view of this team is “meet the new team, same as the old team, won’t be fooled again.”

Yes, the Pythagorean analysis confirms this.

I went and watched Sunny Day Real Estate. It was better than watching this game, though both involve Seattle and a bunch of men being emo.

Teodosio’s well over that .200 mark Moore could never reach. Hell, Davidson’s gonna eclipse Moore’s performance too. Not that it means a ton, but depth is nice if we have stumbled on some.

These have been some seriously meaningful as shit games since August first. I’m glad we didn’t trade anyone important. Then we’d all be so bored. Who would we even be watching right now?

Going to a padres game this weekend. I genuinely can’t remember the last time this late in September I was at an Angels game with playoff implications. Prob when Tori Hunter was on the team. So anyway, maybe that’s just what it sounds like to be in it??

I said that the Doyers needed to trade a bunch of their prospects for a Kenley and a Detmers. Their relief pitching has been getting torched.
