Angels Win Finale vs. Twins 4-3

After trading blowout wins, the Angels and Twins finally played a close game today. Newly signed Angel Jose Urena faced off against Taj Bradley and held his own early.

James Outman remembered his Dodgers form and started the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the third. Outman would add a double and a walk for a really nice day.

That solo homer was the only run Urena allowed across 4 innings. He did live dangerously by allowing 4 walks, but he kept the Angels in the game early.

Mike Trout looks pretty locked in at the plate right now. The power isn’t yet there but the contact is. Trout got back that run in the bottom of the third when he singled in Sebastian Rivero.

Then Zach Neto gave the Angels the lead.

Minnesota battled back and tied it in the top of the 6th when Byron Buxton took Jose Fermin deep with Ryan Fitzgerald on base.

The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 8th. Bryce Teodosio has serious wheels and showed them off with a leadoff triple. A Mike Trout sacrifice fly brought him in and gave the Angels a 4-3 lead.

Kenley Jansen held that lead for his 473rd career save. The Angels win the series and hit the road to play spoiler in Seattle for the next 4 games.

Mike Trout is producing in the leadoff spot. Maybe he should stay there for the rest of the year.

Somehow, despite showing signs of massive diminishment of skills, he’s still tied for 12th (??) in OBP at .363 in the entire league.

And doing so while likely still nursing a knee injury.

Just shows how high his level is – 12th in the league is a down year for him.

along with the Moniak talk (107 OPS+) we could discuss Jam Jones, now with Detroit hitting .278, .922 OPS, 152 OPS+. Both have lopsided splits, with good to great home numbers, not so much on the road. Should we have kept either? both?

We traded Jam for Alex Cobb who was with us for one season. 2021 (77-85).
We released Mickey so we got nothing.

Even more recently drafted – a year after Adell in fact:

Jeremiah Jackson, now with Baltimore

.314/.346/.521 over 127 PAs

Just for discussion:

2015, 2nd round, Jahmai Jones
2016, 2nd round, Brandon Marsh
2017, 1st round, Jo Adell
2018, 2nd round, Jeremiah Jackson
2019, 2nd round, Kyren Paris

Angels took a high school position player within the top 70 picks each year for five years straight. All struggled in the Angels system, but the latent talent of several of these otherwise promising prospects was unlocked in other systems.

Many more names if we extend to round three and Latin notables (Arol Vera, Nonie Williams, Jacob Pearson, David Calabrese).

They’re having some luck developing prep arms of late, but last-mile development of prep bats is a chronic challenge in the post-Trout era, really going all the way back to the 2010 draft.

Once Minasian joined, he has put the brakes on prep bats and to a lesser extent, not invested in prep arms. But yes, the bat void has been snowballing.

Agree with the former, but prep arms have really been his signature. He drafted seven in the last draft alone.

Typical day for our Halos…

Feels like 90% of the time, “forearm troubles” means the obvious…worst.

I don’t give a rats behind about Seattle/Houston so I’ll tale the W’s if we can get them.

It would be sweet to mess with their playoff options in the final series

I’m with you. I don’t care much about the NFL and despise the NBA so when baseball concludes, I’m a bit sad, so let’s finish strong.

PS – I do love combat sports.

For the boxing fans & bettors, take Crawford over Alverez this weekend. I think Crawford is going to “box up” Canelo. Thank me later.
