Twins Outslug Angels

It was a pretty uphill battle for the Angels.

Minnesota struck first in the second inning when Royce Lewis launched a two run homer to center, putting the visitors ahead early. The Angels answered right back in the bottom half with a three run frame highlighted by Willie Calhoun’s RBI double and a two run shot from Samad that briefly gave them the lead.

But the Twins’ bats didn’t stay quiet for long. They scratched across a run in the third then pounced again in the fifth when Lewis went deep for the second time, this one a two-run blast to left. In 2025, Lewis is shining in Hard Hit percentage of 41.1%, well above league average. Los Angeles’ offense, meanwhile, stalled out after its early burst as Minnesota’s pitching settled in and the Angels’ bats fell silent through the middle innings.

The dagger came in the sixth: after a costly fielding error extended the frame James Outman crushed a three run homer to right center, stretching the Twins’ lead to four. As the game moved into the late innings the Angels needed a spark to avoid watching another one slip away in this homestand.

The Twins capitalized once again on Angels’ defensive miscues in the eighth. A pair of errors, one from Rengifo and another from Moncada, opened the door for Minnesota to tack on two more runs. Keaschall scored on the misplay. Royce Lewis reached safely. Willi Castro came around on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Larnach. Martin later doubled, keeping the pressure on.

Later in the 9th it was salt in the wound. Wallner doubled to the right leading to Outman and Gasper scoring. Keaschall signled, Wallner scored.

And unfortunately we didn’t have time to spark up any run. We fell short to the Twins, 12-3.

Let’s run it back! Bring back Moncada, Jansen, and Ward.

Angels lost 3 of their last 4 games by scores of:
4-10 (against A’s): Soriano gave up 8 runs in 2-1/3 innings
4-17 (against A’s): Kikuchi gave up 7 runs in 2 innings
3-12 (against Twins): Dana gave up 5 runs in 4-2/3 innings

Both the A’s and Twins have worse records than the Angels.

In just over 6 months, Angels will play their 1st game of 2026.
How do these 3 pitchers improve in that short span of time? Assuming all 3 are on the roster.
Kikuchi has contract for 2026.
Soriano has arbitration for 2026 (he signed 1-yr contract for $790K for 2025)
Angels still control the contract for Dana, as he’s in pre-arbitration.

Ooof!

Almost as many errors as hits.

On July 1, 2015 Jerry DiPoto walked out and resigned as the Angels’ GM. I viewed it as a very petulant act of a petulant man. I have generally been vocally anti-DiPoto since.

But maybe DiPoto was really telling us something a decade ago that was clear to him then from his vantage but has taken time to sink in to the die-hards. Maybe Dipoto was revealing to us how frustratingly terrible the Org truly is.

10 years later and I think we have to say Dipoto was right and made a good career move. I still say walking out mid-season was chickenshit. But we did not know the idiotic frustrations he was exposed to having to listen to morons like Molly Jolly, Carpino and Kuhl.

Dipoto was right. Abandoning Arte’s ship a decade ago was a very smart move.

For me there measurement would be how many times either team made the playoffs or were .500 or above since Dipoto’s resignation. It’s obvious the 3 Horseman of the Baseball Apocalypse are destroying Angels baseball.

Dipoto has underachieved in Seattle, he’s flopped in two AL West cities

He didn’t say he wanted Dipoto, just that the record says he was the best of the last 4 GMs. Seattle has performed better than we have since he left and the Angels have performed worse since he left. He recognized there was a problem and left. I would have waited until the end of the season but I would have done the same and have done so more than once in my career when I thought it was necessary.

At the same time, If I were hired to be the GM I would say you hired me to do this and here’s my plan. If I was not allowed to do what I thought was right, I would present my argument and if we were too far apart, I would resign. Like others have said, you get a budget and you should be free to work within the budget.

Yorke – “outslug” suggests the Angels slugged.

no offense Yorke, but this is the worst writeup ever. Unless this is some sort of joke, which would go well with the game.

I actually prefer this style of recap/write-up. Remember newspapers?

except Willie Calhoun is playing in Mexico, the only Samad I know is a Mariner, and Outman’s HR was a solo shot. I guess after a depressing loss I’m not in the mood to guess what Yorke is doing here.

Me thinks Yorke may be relying a bit too much on AI

As the guy who wrote Friday and Saturday’s games, i can say it takes a lot to keep watching that stuff.
