Bittersweet Win Postgame

Today we had Jose Soriano versus Hunter Brown on the mound. In the first inning, after a Zach Neto flyout and a Yoan Moncada strikeout. Mike Trout blooped a double into the Astros weak spot. Apparently if Jeremy Pena can’t get to it, it might just drop in front of Yordan Alvarez.

Taylor Ward walked. Jo Adell grounded out to short. Oh well.

Jose Soriano promptly gave up a walk and a base hit. Luckily he got Jose Altuve to hit into a force out at third. Carlos Correa struck out. So did Jesus Sanchez.

Inning 2:

The Angels were retired in order. Soriano struck out the first two batters but then gave up a walk. Jacob Melton grounded out to take us to the third inning.

Inning 3:

Hunter Brown followed suit; striking out Peraza and Neto and walking Moncada. Mike Trout grounded out to second. Soriano retired the Astros in order.

Inning 4:

Therefore, Hunter Brown found it necessary to retire the Angels in order. Jose Soriano retired the Astros in order.

Inning 5:

Oswald Peraza homered to put the Angels up 1-0.

Soriano retired the Astros 1, 2, 3.

Inning 6:

Yoan Moncada appeared to have injured himself on a swing and a miss. He continued to bat and was out on a grounder to first. The remainder of the inning went nowhere. Taylor Ward walked and Jo Adell singled, but thanks to outs by Trout and Rengifo, the Astros get to bat again. It’s OK. The Angels got through the inning and even got their first double play of the game on Jose Altuve.

Inning 7:

Lance McCullers Jr. came in to replace Hunter Brown. Two quick outs brought up the mighty Oswald Peraza. He singled and subsequently picked up a stolen base. Does this guy suck or what? Zach Neto struck out to end the top of the seventh. Astros: strikeout, groundout, strikeout.

Inning 8:

Yoan Moncada walked and Mike Trout doubled him in to make it 2-0 Angels.

Taylor Ward walked for the third time of the day. Jo Adell struck out. Luis Rengifo reached base and scored Mike Trout. He seemed to be shaken up on the play. 3-0 Angels.

d’Arnaud got hit by a pitch but Lugo and Peraza both were out to end the frame. Luis Garcia came in to pitch for Soriano. Ramon Urias doubled to left and bloodied Taylor Ward on the forehead around the bridge of his nose.
There was a delay including a golf cart ride. Luis Rengifo went to left field and Christian Moore went to second. Jacob Melton struck out. Pena also struck out.

Inning 9:

A.J. Blubaugh came in to pitch. Zach Neto flied out to center. Yoan Moncada struck out. Mike Trout grounded out 6-3. Kenley Jansen came in and retired Alvarez, Altuve, and Correa in order. Saweet! Angels shut out the Astros 3-0.

With Anderson on the 15-day IL, who steps up next? Do they pick Aldegheri or somebody else?

Nice game for Trout and Peraza.

Hope Ward heals quickly. He’s a Bulldog so he’s tough.

Jordan threw another gem for IE today. They’re 7.5 games up in the standings for the second half of the season and look like playoff shoe-ins at this point. Will be fun watching him, Alvarez, TGA et al compete for a second championship this season.

They secured second half playoff position earlier this weekend – they’re in. Fresno (who they just played) are likely to join Rancho, San Jose and the 66ers in the playoffs).

(Was live posting Jordan’s two Ks of Ethan Holliday in the game thread – neither were close.)

Soriano obviously has the goods. It’s taking a while to put it all together and that’s to be expected coming from double TJ’s in 2020 & 2021. So he’s really on schedule and .just needs to trust himself.

Though to be fair, he never looked like a given prior to the pandemic. The team didn’t protect him and let him go to the Pirates for a year, and the Pirates didn’t protect him either in the end.

Two years ago, he was a short reliever in a depleted bullpen. Much credit goes to Soriano here – he’s really put in the effort to reinvent himself.

As a 17-year old International sign, nothing is given. I’d say Soriano always had the live arm to make himself into something. Soriano is looking good to me. Just hope he is not too over-coached by the Angel brass.

Yeah, I’m talking less about him as a 17 yo, and more about him as a 23 yo that virtually everyone had given up on as a prospect.

He peaked on BA’s Angels Top 30 at #7 in 2020, fell off it entirely the next year, and never appeared on it again. He was largely written off five years after signing.

The fact that the Angels signed Jose Urena off of the scrap heap tell me they are primed to play meaningful games in September!!!

He’s pitched for 10 organizations to date. Maybe the 11th time is the charm.

And 5 of them just this season. Outside of 3 disastrous innings with the Mets, he hasn’t been a bad pitcher, but I’d rather see one of the guys from the farm pitch meaningful innings rather than Jose.

Whomever designed the outfield fence and scoreboard at the Astros stadium must have been drunk.

Really, good on Jo for speaking out. That’s an outfield more designed for Squid Game than pro ball.

I note that it’s Jo and not Trouty taking leadership on this issue. Jo is becoming my favorite Angel

Differing opinion and sure to draw thrown sandwiches at me. How much of this is Twinkle Toes Taylor just being Taylor? I think a lot. I’m not wanting to overreact here as there are other parks which have similar metal or unpadded wall features. Personally, I like to see quirks, nooks and crannies in baseball playing fields. The Astro players play 81 home games there and I’m not sure there has been complaints from internal or they would have been redesigned. Maybe I’m wrong. I think you just need to know how to play the park and have a proper understanding of the purpose of the warning track.

What’s wrong with a little padding?

FungoAle

Where there is a way, padding should be added but at Wrigley, suspect with the Ivy it cannot be done? Even with padding, some walls are not too giving. Angels stadium the walls are built to flex, not sure about right but in general, you pull up before a collision.

Trout with two doubles and no K’s. More of that, please.

Angels pitched well this entire series after getting absolutely mauled in Arlington.

Even with one of the doubles being a pop fly that dropped, I’d be happy with this version of Trout for the rest of his career. He was swinging snd making contact.

In the post game interview he talked about having difficulty seeing the ball again, though.

I find it mind boggling that Trout looked like he was flailing up there and then today was so different. Can one of the commenters who was saying that Trout is toast kindly explain to me why the result was so different?

I said he was toast. And apparently he said he is having trouble seeing the ball. So today he was swinging and made some contact, wouldn’t you think this was an outlier compared to the last 20, 30, 50 games? Personal story, I didn’t realize how bad my sight had depleted until playing golf or surfing, and I couldn’t see where my ball ended up after a tee shot, even though it was on the fairway, with surfing, it it was overcast, I couldn’t see a set wave coming and would get caught inside and drilled because I couldn’t differentiate between the water and the sky. If his eyesight is going wonky ( I became nearsighted), it will definitely impact his ability to hit, and if he doesn’t address it, it only gets worse. The split seconds that you have to react as an MLB hitter, gets multiplied with eyesight issues.

Taylor will bounce back. That faceplant to the wall was merely a flesh wound compared to last year’s fastball to the face.

On a personal level, I hope he is okay and makes a quick recovery. From a team perspective, I would like to use the opening to give Lugo or anyone else they want to bring up as a test run for next year.

It would be a good opening for Rada, but the way things go on this club, I suspect they’d just call up Chris Taylor.

Let’s play as many players for the rest of the schedule – players who the Angels believe could make an impact for 2026

There’s no reason to sit Moore. He’s not hurting the Angels’ playoffs chances, so let him face all pitchers – the great pitchers, or the bad ones.
