Angels Lose Postgame

August 22, 2025

OK. So what we had was Tyler Anderson versus Assad. Anderson was nothing special. Kyle Tucker homered to make it 1-0 Cubs. In the third inning Seiya Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly to score Dansby Swanson. 2-0 Cubs.

We got through the next inning without any scoring, unfortunately.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Yoan Moncada homered to make it 2-1 Cubs.

Don’t worry. A Logan O’Hoppe double play and a Christian Moore strikeout were enough to finish the fifth inning. We can still complain.

In the sixth inning, Nolan Schanuel got a two out hit by pitch. Mike Trout walked. It’s like a rally, but without the cool stuff such as scoring runs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Yoan Moncada homered again. 2-2 tie.

Jo Adell then struck out. So did Logan O’Hoppe. So did Christian Moore.

I didn’t really notice anybody doing anything in the eighth inning. Detmers allowed no runs. Off we go to Kenley Jansen in the ninth.

Jansen gave up a homer to Pete Crow-Armstrong to make it 3-2 Cubs.

In the ninth inning: StrikeTrout^TM followed by groundout followed by strikeout. Game over.

Was at game tonight as I was invited. I ordered nothing other than a couple beers for my host and just watched. The level of NOISE is just annoying. It’s exactly the opposite vibe of chill and relax. It’s like ARENT WE ALL JUST HAVING THE BESTEST TIME!!

And then the Jansen intro. Jeebus. I mean really it’s just bad theater for the masses. Whatever happened to just coming out of the bullpen, running to the infield and throwing the ball.

I’m old but it feels like this game is more about trying to keep everyone jacked up versus just chilling and enjoying a game on a Friday night.

I can’t speak to your personal preferences Fan. But people enjoy games in different ways. I actually hate it at Angels Stadium when it is silent and dull. Not only does it seem “dead”, but I think the players are less enthused.

Just look at the energy in that Dodgers series — 44k + each game (and loud !) and the players were jacked up. You could feel the energy and the players were uplifted by it. So, I have to disagree a bit here …

It’s not the real excitement I have a problem with. It’s the clown show psyche up stuff. The super loud music and “let’s get loud!” What’s wrong with some chill when it’s not an exciting moment?

It’s a baseball game not a KISS concert. It’s ADHD central.

I actually really enjoyed that closer intro when I watched it live a few weeks ago. I wish they would do it for other star players. The angels stadium announcer is a snooze fest along with the dj.

Management doesn’t want fans to focus on the fact that Angels are a horrid team, lacking fundamentals in every area (hitting, fielding, pitching, running, managing).

So, they have all the bells and whistles for distraction.

obligatory Perry bashing: He has said over the years that he didn’t like the offers he was getting and thus didn’t make deals, but isn’t it his job to know about all players and thus be able to be creative and figure out deals that would work?

One scenario, and I’m not saying this is what happens, is that he talks to a team about Jansen, they offer a player or two, Perry rejects that and calls another team which does the same. But surely Perry and his staff would ask for a player and if that doesn’t work, know enough about the other team’s farm to suggest alternatives. But I don’t get the sense that Perry works that way.

I don’t believe Arte tells Perry who to trade with or who to trade for. Arte might constrain Perry in free agency but not in drafting and not in trading so it’s all on Perry…in my opinion.

Trout has to be more aggressive in his abs. He’s here to drive in runs, not get on base. That 2-0 meatball down the middle could have been the game. Also I don’t want Ward back. Whatever he’s going to make in FA is more than he’s worth. His defense is bad and we need to improve in that area. I think it’s a lot more likely a defense first player stumbles into a good offensive year than a bat first player stumbles into a good defensive year.

They need to be outside and low for him to swing at it. The previous AB for Ward was worse. 3 fastballs, middle of the zone, bat never moved. Sit down Ward!!!

He’s looking for the off-speed too much. Yeah, it is easier to hit the off-speed out of the park if you guess right, but with Palencia throwing gas at 99-100mph you have to look fastball. Maybe with two outs and nobody on you take a different approach…

But I think in that spot leading off the bottom of the 9th down by 1 run you just need to get on base …. Ward and Adell are following. In that spot he just needs to look fastball and try to put the ball in play… so I partially agree with you but not totally.

The book is and has been on Trout. He cannot hit the high cheese, for years now. He likes the ball down low and I think he is going up to the plate, patiently waiting to get one there. He used to be a comfortable 2-strike hitter, not so much now.

And even if he didn’t we likely wouldn’t score in the 9th so who pitches the 10th? I guess zef, who could have pitched the 9th…but then Kenley would have pitched the 10th and we’d have the same problem

He burned Chafin for just one batter, why not stretch him to pitch the 7th? You have Zefer, Stephenson, Burke and Detmers to cover the rest of the game. Jansen only comes in with a lead.

Yeah, agree. I have been saying something similar for awhile now; namely that Monty only knows how to manage one way : by strict rules. And that means never throw a guy more than one inning.

I mean, Detmers could easily have gone 2 innings. That in addition to what you said about Chafin. So, really even if the game were still tied in the 9th you would not have to bring Kenley in there… You just need to use your resources more efficiently instead of pulling guys so quickly.
