Angels Bats Save Woeful Pitching in 7-6 Win

Bawston, a city that angers Angels fans of all ages. And look, they are starting a Cy Rookie. This will be ugly huh? Just another painful loss in the long line of “It’s so over” right when the “We’re so back” is now a distant memory…

At least the bats were here. Wait what? Yeah, a 6 run first inning. Seriously. No Cy rookie today, The Angels offense was fierce, and did their job, But can the pitching? Tyler Anderson went 4 and 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs (3 while on the mound, 2 by the RP) on 7 hits striking out 5 and walking 2. Not good. battle of the bullpens, and the Angels Bullpen is a SUCK.

That could have gone better

Slugfest? Maybe. Or maybe no one in the building could pitch. Whatever sounds better… or worse.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels went fast and hard right out the gate. Starting with a Neto leadoff home run!

1-0 Angels

They added run 2 on an error. LOLZ Sux.

2-0 Angels

Oh yeah, Mike Trout is back, and hit a 3 run bomb.

5-0 Angels

And Jo Adell made history with the first visiting team to hit 3 home runs at Fenway in the first inning.

6-0 Angels

It was glorious, and the SP was done after 1 IP.

Too bad Anderson gave up one in the 3rd on back to back doubles.

6-1 Angels

Things were going well, until the 5th, when Anderson gave up another run.

6-2 Angels

Make that 2.

6-3 Angels

And Anderson did not make it 5 innings. Not good. Strickland came in and blew, it allowing Anderson’s 2 runners to score.

6-5 Angels

The offense had to save the day. Jo Adell agreed and hit his 2nd home run of the game!

7-5 Angels

Detmers came in and did a good job for the 7th. Neris came in for the 8th and gave up a home run, come ON.

7-6 Angels

At least he got it to Jansen with the lead. And he saved the game. Angels Win!

Upcoming

2 more in Bawston, and then back home to face the Mariners.

They score 6 runs in the first inning and still almost lose the game? Yeeesh.

This is a problem the Halos have — they get a lead and then they get comfortable.

Mostly, everyone starts looking for HR’s. This falls on coaching and the manager and not putting emphasis on EVERY AB.

What i saw of the game, that second Sox pitcher was slingin’. A few hard hit balls, but some were at-em balls.

The starters are mediocre and the BP is bad. It’s not difficult to see why winning is a struggle.

We should be satisfied with the W by hook or crook.

They couldn’t even get the lose from ahead thing right.

We WON! Oh no.

Jo Adell? Getting off the interstate? Two big boy home runs that looked like they might hurt someone? Hitting fastballs? Why are you toying with my emotions Jo Adell?

Nice to see Jo Adell with a big game along with some improvement overall the past couple of weeks or so. Hopefully Chris Taylor won’t cut into Jo’s playing time. Keeping Trout at DH should be regarded as a must for the club but, we’ll see how it plays out. That creates a problem as Soler will need to play far more often in RF. So be it.

Any win in Boston, regardless of how it unfolds, goes down smooth.

I’m more concerned with Trout staying healthy and getting at-bats than I am with any problems Soler might or might not have in RF. Trout will be with us a lot longer than Soler so I’m looking at this long-term. A healthy and productive Trout, even in a losing season, bodes well for 2026 and beyond.

Exactly.

Life in the 5-hole? For how long?

Ron Washington said Mike Trout is still going to hit 5th tomorrow.

“He’s doing well where he is.” x.com/JeffFletcherOC…

I agree with Wash.

When a player is hot, don’t move him.

I’d prefer to see Trout hitting 3rd, with Neto and Schanuel ahead, and Ward 4th.
Have Adell and Soler switch places. Give Adell more at-bats, even if it means more strikeouts. Soler’s best days are behind him. Adell likely will never reach the heights that Soler got to, but, he’s still got more of a future with the Angels than Soler.

Neither Adell or Soler are replacement level players. Would not surprise me if Angels look to the free agent market for an OF that is at least replacement level. I can see both of these guys gone after WS.
Ward is to streaky for me at 4th. Maybe Wash just skips 4th and goes straight to Trout at 5. Just play with 8 batters.

You say “Ward is streaky” but baseball is a game of streaks, both for teams and for the individual players. You are unrealistic in your expectations and thus in your appraisals as well..

Have you looked at other players stats ? Mookie Betts only has 4 hits in his last 25 AB’s… that is less than a .200 average. Is he “streaky” ? Maybe the Dodgers should get rid of him ?

How about Bobby Witt Jr. ? He only has 3 hits in his last 32 AB’s. that is less than a .100 BA. He must be pretty streaky too ! I think the Royals need to trade him.

I agree that taking a microscope to batting stats can skew any assessments and lead to funky conclusions. The ‘streaks’ don’t include good ABs that just result in an out. In the case of Ward, I haven’t advocated for a trade of Ward. I don’t know where Ward’s replacement would come from. I do think it is possible that Adell and Soler are not around next year. I really like Adell. He has done everything he can to be a good MLB player but it just has not worked out yet.

I do notice that the Angels BABIP is the second lowest in the division at .272 (before the game in Boston). A few more balls that fall in for hits would be a big help.

As regards BABIP that is a big thing… In Ward’s case his BABIP for the first two months was quite low. So, his AVG and SLG were pretty misleading.

I am still not understanding the logic behind DHing him when his last 5 or so injuries have all come on offense.

Keeping him cold on the bench for multiple innings at a time between at bats seems like it’s more risky than helpful.

I guess I get the concept of trying to do something different to try to preserve him but it doesn’t feel like it’s going to help. I hope I’m wrong though!

Whatever reset he’s done, maybe we shouldn’t mess with it.

Batting 5th, DH #27 Mike Trout

Mike Trout said he used the month that he was on the injured list as a “reset” for his swing.

I see your point. My position is that it’s simply a wear & tear time bomb with him.

Every moment/movement on the field increases the odds of him going down.

He can occupy himself with stretching, new age wellness, etc. whilst in the dugout.

If nothing else, maybe we’ll get lucky.

It’s a weak argument to be sure. Just Hopium TBH.

Social media guy that shares baseball stuff, mostly pitching obviously but he throws in a bit of everything. Does a lot of pitch tunneling overlay edits.

He’s definitely worth a follow if you like baseball highlights.

I mean, he objectively has the best fastball in college ball right now. It’s made for Pitching Ninja highlights.

But so did Bachman. And he has a 70 grade slider too.

Just comes down to your appetite for risk. I just think, if you’re down for that level of risk, why not go all in and draft Seth Hernandez?

He wouldn’t be my first choice at pick #2 for that very reason. I’m tired of the injuries.

He’s certainly fun to watch though.

Definitely fun to watch, and I’ll make peace with the decision if it comes to that. He has frontline upside.

But I also think he has a 50%+ chance of washing out with chronic injuries, and a 30% chance he becomes a late reliever. Gotta thread a lot of needles to become the ace he is now against college kids with metal bats.

Besides, we all know Perry is going to draft Arquette 🤦🏼‍♂️

Most of the draft gurus are convinced that Minasian will go Doyle, because: Quick to show. Big fastball, which Perry loves. And Tennessee connections (Moore, Joyce). And college performer in the SEC, which Moreno approves of.

Otoh, Arquette is probably the safest play, along with Arnold/Anderson. Outside of the prep talent, it’s kind of an underwhelming class at the very top, so there’d be worse things than drafting a high floor bat that the team slots into 3b or 2b in 1-2 years.

TrojanBoiler

That’s a positive way to look at it. I would rather have Arnold than Arquette I suppose, if we are going safe.

Farm is completely lacking bats in the upper levels though so maybe Arquette wouldn’t be the worst thing.

It’s as bereft of positional talent as I’ve ever seen it in the post-Trout era. One of the consequences of the all pitcher draft, right after the COVID draft, was depleting the system of impact offense up and down the system.

It’d be worth biasing toward offense this draft just to try to rebalance the farm a bit. They can always focus on arms in deadline trades.

a good day for me. The Angels beat the Red Sox. Hooray! I hate the Red Sox! And the Skanks! I hate both of them more than I hate the Dodgers! And we beat the Sux! Ha!

And the Beavers beat USC easily to make it to the super regional. Beavs won their last 3 games by a total of 43 to 4. That’s pretty wild.

Turley really growing on me as an Angels target. Was always a third round target to me, but maybe he’s worth a second round pick?

Arquette and Turley have been pacing each other all tournament – same batting avg, same # of HRs, probably same wRC+ after today’s victory. 50+ game on base streak for Turley, iirc
