LA Angels Thursday News Crash: New Edgar Suit

It looks like Edgar Quero is going to get his first cup of coffee. In other White Sox news, they just DFAd Mike Clevinger.

The Twins acquired infielder Jonah Bride from the Marlins for cash. The Pirates swapped outfielder Bryce Johnson to the Padres in exchange for catcher Brett Sullivan. The Pirates and Nationals had a benches clearing incident. It doesn’t seem that they brawled, but a pitcher did get ejected for throwing at Andrew McCutchen’s head after having hit the previous batter.

Right-hander Casey Lawrence cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Baffling Injury of the Day

Jose Miranda injured his left hand by carrying a case of bottled water.

Slow Jo?

Have you noticed that Jo Adell doesn’t seem as fast as he was? There’s a reason for that.

Also, he got a torpedo bat.

Plus, notes on O’Hoppe, Neto, Trout.

Just checked and the Angels are currently 12th in runs scored, which is good, although the teams that have better records are scoring more. Not surprising though, is that we are tied for 27th with the Marlins for giving up runs with only Colorado and Washington giving up more. The good teams are all giving up more than a run less a game than we are which is the big difference.

Interesting — particularly because the general notion has been the pitching has been solid. The stats say otherwise.

Yes, and in particular, Houston is 11 and Texas is 5. Unfortunately, the Giants are 6 so it won’t be easier this weekend.

It’s been good more often than not but when it has been bad it has been horrible.

Opening Day, the blowout loss in Houston, and the 5 run inning in Houston account for a lot of our runs allowed.

When you have bad management, a bad manager, and a bad team, what we have seen the last few games will inevitably happen. I said when we were winning, and I will say as we’re losing, it’s a small sample size. We should know right where we are after about 50 games. I have my suspicions. As I have also said repeatedly, we need to play the kids and not play the retreads and roster fillers.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Let me kill the suspense. It’s still a team with a lot of meh players on it. So we will likely be a bad team. Because it is still 2025, and that is what almost everybody has seen the 2025 Angels pulling off.

“How good we are doing” will be relative to last years crap pile.

We will need to play retreads when guys are hurt.

CtPG Guy will not be happy till we have All-Star alternates at every position…. or he just gives up and becomes a Dodger fan.

This is how things will be after 50 games.

We’ll get MOAR KIDZ. Gotta let em cook in the MiLB. Which means TiAnderson has a job… Moncada… etc. If august rolls around and we have no injuries but still play Anderson at 2B then I’ll be all pissy about it.

Hey! The Blummer wrote a fun piece on the Angels that isn’t doom and gloom. Neither Arte nor Perry mentioned once.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6285779/2025/04/17/angels-tyler-anderson/

But don’t let the sub-90 miles per hour fastball fool you. On his start days, he’s nonetheless one of the most intense pitchers the game has to offer.

Ultimately, it was not, in fact, a party that day. Instead, Anderson said it was a form of the “controlled rage” that defines his presence on the mound. The loud utterance of a profanity, borne from frustration, serves the purpose of centering Anderson.

Predicting the sweep, our offense looks lost on this Texas trip. Trout looks like Joey swingnmiss Gallo. How could they not hit the worst starter in the game Corbin? Sad, our ‘’meh’ starting pitchers have done well enough for us to win a few of these. Today let’s hopefully not see Rocker make us pay for not drafting him.

So we have played about 10% of the season, we have a winning recored, and we haven’t put ourselves in an early hole. All good things, and we accomplished them without our best player from last year via WAR.

We do not have playoff caliber starting pitching yet and at this point, we really haven’t had any legitimate 3 and 4 position hitters in our line up nor have we had a lead off hitter. We have hit a lot of HRs, but we make too many outs, so not enough baserunners.

A 3rd of our line up has been pretty weak. Via OPS+ Anderson 80% below average, Adell 31% below average, and Rengifo 11% below average. Anderson will soon be replaced by Neto and there is reason to believe Rengifo will get better, making it easier to absorb Jo who will likely be in the line up for the rest of this year.

In 2027, when we have money, we’ll need to add a couple of middle of the order bats and replace Soler, who thus far has been very solid with a 279/352/525 slash line for a 152 OPS+, 50% above average.

We’re nothing like last year but we still have a number of holes that aren’t realistically going to be filled this year and maybe not next year either. We’re just going to have to be patient and wait for more kids to develop.

I like him. I yearn for him to play well. But I think Adell is in more danger than we may all think. IF Paris is any good come say July. Or IF an MiLB OF gets hot. With Neto taking up his spot in the line up, if Adell is still crap and they have to get Paris ABs he’s gonna be in trouble.

Granted, we still likely hold on to him and then play him if Rengifo, Ward or both are traded. But it’s not like Adell has the “you’ll start most of the games all year” mandate this year. He’s got to pull it together semi-soon or I am fairly sure they start hatching plans that involve him less.

Fortunately, there isn’t necessarily a lot of urgency to do anything right now. We don’t have any other options as you have pointed out but I do agree his leash is getting shorter.

He’s always started off slow….. might be how he rolls. Fingers crossed, decent defensive in CF, learn to steal some bases like Paris….. Hit 245, 23 HR’s, 65+ RBI…few more hot streaks, few less cold streaks.

go Jo?

Yah. There’s gonna be plenty of “showcase” happening too. See if Anderson can get hot and be traded. Anyone named Anderson. For example. It’s just part of being on a rebuilding team. Puting out “the burst line hup parsible!” cause we demand the win isn’t what is always gonna happen. At least for now they also have to try to create trade bait. Or at least they should.

Guys like Adell, Detmers, Dana, Paris are mid-season issues.

I like this idea. Like that carnival game where you dunk someone by hitting the target. If an ump misses a ball and strikes call the catcher moves out of the way the next pitch. Better than robo umps and that will bring out more fans

So true. That’s why the Doyers suck with Will Smith. The Giants got no where with Buster Posey. The Cardinals were like Yadi Molina? Garbage. Jorge Posada? Almost zero value to the Yankees. JT Realmutto. Vanilla value. Salvi Perez. The Royals are always talking about how little he really matters. Darren Daulton, Tony Pena, Jason Varitek, Terry Steinback….

I think your hot steaming pile of take is that a good catcher is hard to find and thus some teams have had to win without one. But I also think just about every team that has a good one has a pretty solid advantage over teams that don’t.

Actually. How many teams HAD a really good catcher and sucked? The Twins in some of Maur’s catcher years? The Carton Fisk White Sox? The teams Benito Santiago was on?

Klassen was lights out last night on Wednesday… too bad Pandas’ bats MIA.

Sammy Natera struck out all four batters he faced in relief, which is awesome, but I don’t understand why they’re using him strictly in relief this year. Thought he was a starting prospect. In any case, wonder if they’ll be moving him along soon. Hasn’t given up any runs this year in AA yet.

Sounds like Klassen is getting prepared for when he gets called up to Anaheim. Pitch your heart out and get zero run support.

Must Be fun to know that less than perfect is probably a loss. Would do wonders for your confidence as a pitcher.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Eh. Speaking as a guy who pitched for a team that lost all but five games while he had an ERA just over 1 and two Ks per inning…. it doesn’t matter all that much. I was a little mystified when I managed to LOSE a no hitter. Defensive errors are WAY more of a piss puddle for a pitcher than wins and losses. Losses happen. But if you know you pitched well it doesn’t suck much more than if you played OF. What DOES suck is when you get a guy to ground out and he end up on 2nd base.

Twebur

True, A little grittyness goes a long way….more worried that kids like Jack Koch, Soriano, eventually Detmers, Dana start to form some bad habits knowing that that run support isn’t very supportive. More of a focus thing.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Twebur

Even as a meh high school pitcher you pretty much just learn to focus on the next pitch, next batter, etc. I’m sure it’s hard for CoachDad to hear, but at a certain mental level you don’t give a shit that your team is crap and your W/L record stinks. You can go 4-8 but you still feel OK if your walks and runs allowed were low. You got your change up to work well. etc. You make a summer ball team if you’re good, even if you have a losing record.

Sure, you’d love to win the championshit too, but most pitchers get to pitch for poop teams, and in college they play at App State, not Vanderbilt. They’ve been doing it since little league. So it’s not like it warps you into a bundle of nerves regarding run support. If you get a big lead you’re relaxed. You’re pissed when you give up runs, even if you have a big lead.

Pitchers are narcissists. Should we be concerned?

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

I think, if I remember right, Natera is being built back better? He was injured for a long time and they are throwing him multi-innings in AA right? They do that a lot in AA. Throw a guy four or five, then another guy 2 or 3 innings…
