LA Angels Monday News Crash: Finally!

The Angels traded Jose Suarez to the Braves for right-hander Ian Anderson. He’ll be pitching out of the bullpen. Scott Kingery cleared waivers and the Angels outrighted him to Triple-A. Mike Trout is enjoying his switch to right field. Here is MLBTR’s review of the Angels offseason.

In other news, the Red Sox released Adam Ottavino and the Rockies will release Jake Woodford. The Brewers will release Manuel Margot. Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson will begin the season on the ten day IL due to his intercostal strain. Forty one year old Jesse Chavez just got a minor league deal with the Braves.

The Rangers placed right-hander Dane Dunning on waivers. The Rockies sent outfielder Nolan Jones to Cleveland in exchange for Tyler Freeman.

Right-hander Drew Thorpe will undergo Tommy John surgery. Of course he will be missing the 2025 season.

RHP: Seth Hernandez, Corona (Calif.)
The best prep pitcher in the class, Hernandez is tall (6-foot-4), projectable and athletic. And he has really good now stuff, with a fastball that’s flirted with triple digits, a plus changeup, a high-spin spike curve and a newer slider.
Commitment: Vanderbilt
Quit drafting college kids who can’t play in MLB (Matt Thaiss, Nolan Schanuel} We need great players, not scrubs who are still in AA at 27yrs old

True but I’d rather have him stretched out for when that time comes.

Although if they go towards mine and Gitcho’s dream of a starter followed by a guy who goes through the lineup once, this could be it.

Kikuchi is a lefty. Let him go until he can’t then bring in the righty Anderson to offset a righty heavy lineup. Or, after Silent C goes, we can bring in Detmers.

I imagine Reid will be used in multi-inning appearances.

He isn’t the most confident dude and sending him back down to AAA might destroy whatever confidence he has left. From that angle, I like the move in keeping Reid on the MLB roster.

Reid Detmers: “Obviously being a starter is where I’d like to be and I believe that’s where I’ll end up being eventually. But right now it’s getting off to a different path. I’m looking forward to it. Whatever way I can help this team win is what I’m going to do.”

Reid Detmers cont…”It is what it is, I’m not mad about it. I’m excited to go on with this new role and get things going.”

If the Angels are going make significant progress this year, it’s not going to be because of the players they added this winter.

It will be because of steps forward from the players in their young core.

🍍 🍍 🍍 away from Opening Day !!!

Seasons with little to no expectations are always enjoyable (to me)!

You know I’m ready. Y’all have posted about Suarez nearly 6,000 times since the trade, meaning that y’all are ready.

Two more fake games against the Japan Dodgers, and then it’s real.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Suarez has been traded. Your long nightmare is over CtPG Guy. Who will be the new “worst pitcher ever who doesn’t even care enough and gives up six home runs an inning in our hearts and represents how stupid and un dedicated to wins we are”? Cause I’m pretty sure we have that guy on the roster.

I actually like the Anderson pick up a lot. He was a 60 grade prospect 3 years ago. He has a good Fastball/Change up mix and a solid curve. He’s an Anderson, which is what the A stands for on our hat now. He’ll start out in the pen but can be switched to a starter if we want. Just gotta get him back from TJS this year without having to option him. .

And this is just the type of roster to do that with. I was expecting to get a bag of air and some thoughts and prayers for Suarez so this is a nice pick up

Boston Red Sox going for that extra ROY cred with Christian Campbell.

Team looked fairly good last night till it didn’t. I expect this a lot this year. It’s an improving team, but it’s still not a good team and over nine innings that’s gonna show up sometimes.

Jo Adell. Bro. I want you to be good soooo bad. Try picking a couple pitch locations off the plate to NOT swing at.

Didn’t realize what a prospect he was at one point. Before the 2021 season it looks like most outlets had him ranked as a top 10 prospect in all of baseball.

Yeah. He was a big deal. But then, so was John Lamb. we’ll just have to see. But this is the type of thing I actually want PTP trying to do right now. He could try this five times and fail four of them, but if we get a solid pitcher for nothing out of it for the next 4 years who cares?

Anderson was a prep pitcher though – the riskiest of all first round player types – high risk, high reward. And of the top five players taken in the 2016 draft, three were position players, and none have delivered even 1 bWAR in their careers.

The draft is risky, period.

Of the fifteen highest WAR players from the 2016 first round, ten are pitchers. So there’s nothing inherently riskier about choosing, say, a college arm over a prep or college bat. In fact, pitchers tend to hold their value longer (by a nose) among early draftees over other player types.

We know the Angel lack good communication skills. Maybe some arm fatigue, other health issues? Doubt he’s getting ALL his work in outside of games after 7 innings of ST.

Unfortunately they seem to like that Quesadilla guy. If you can find a taker for Suarez, you could find a taker for Quesadilla.

I’m glad to see that Suarez has moved on as I personally don’t trust him when it matters most. That being said, I do think he was in better shape than previous seasons and I always attributed his lack of success early in seasons to a lack of conditioning. It will be interesting to see what happens with him in ATL.

6.1 BILLIONS dollars for the Boston Celtics! I mean, yah, they are probably the most valuable team in the sport. But WOW.

Almost got to wonder if Cohen’s method of just blowing up the salary structure will work if it nets a bunch of WS titles and fan fervor so your team’s value goes to 5 Billion…. though in reality that’s a pretty iffy proposition and every season that you lose 100M trying it eats away at that value.

I struggle to understand how NBA teams are a better asset than an MLB team. I go back to the Suns who sold for over $4B, while Arte apparently couldn’t get $3B for the Angels.

Why? There are twice as many baseball games as NBA, and baseball stadiums have twice the capacity to watch love. Is it all TV money? Salaries in the NBA are crazy but its a smaller roster.

I can understand why the Celtics are worth $6.1B, but it doesn’t make sense to me the Suns are worth more than the Angels (?) without understanding more of the underlying financials.

Suarez gone? Yes! First good news of the spring.

MartyMcBigFly

Glad to see Suarez go for anybody. He and Sandoval were the most frustrating pitchers to watch. They would hit a hundred pitches by their 4th inning of work. Speaking of frustrating, last nights game was just that. Leaving guys on base then kicking the ball around enabling the Dog-hairs to cruise. I know it’s only a spring training game but if Wash had challenged that blown call at first it would have saved a lot of wear and tear on the pitching staff and the team on the field. Jansen looked really rough too.

TrojanBoiler

Suarez owned a 6.02 ERA in 2024 but fared slightly better against left-handed batters than against righties. He allowed an .806 OPS against left-handers compared to .892 against right-handed batters, and he struck out 21 of 83 lefties faced.

Good news, he only gave up an .806 OPS against lefties.

But we Still need more right handed setup guys. IA has never pitched in relief before so other than long relief stints I just dont see him helping the team in those middle innings when our bevy of left handers are getting hammered and our right handed setup guys are over taxed. I still think there is another move out there as I dont understand why you need the Perdomo/Quijada/Burke three headed lefty monster in the same pen

But as a starting option, depending upon his ongoing rehab from TJS, Ian Anderson this could be a steal

Cowboy26

Exactly. Ian averaged 4.0 BB/9 in his first 3 MLB seasons before the knife. Not great but adequate with his K rate being close to 1 per inning. He pretty much averaged the same (3.8 BB/9 & 9.0 K/9) ) in his 15 minor league games last year. I would be curious what his velocity has been . if it’s way down he’s probably had to get too fine with his control against major leaguers which has been hard to do during this rehab period.

I’m sure Perry and the boys have some data on him but if they can get him back anywhere where he was in 2020 & 2021 this could be a huge pickup for the ball club. Now he is eligible for Arbitration starting in 2026 but if considering the low risk if he shits the bed the Angels can just release him.
