LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Need to go 3-2

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

The Angels BLEW IT AGAIN. I am so mad at how badly the bullpen just BLEW IT. Up 6-0, the Angels lose 9-7.

Angels need to go 3-2 in the last 5 games to avoid that 100 loss Season. It is looking rough man.

Oh and the Trash Pandas also blow it, now have to play a game 3. Ugh.

Around Baseball

As the Angels lose again, other teams clinch. Like the Rays winning the AL East.

The White Sox clinch a non losing season. Must be nice.

Women as well, as the LA Queens win the first WPBL champs! A CG shutout.

Or player accomplishments like Wheeler getting his 2K K. 96th pitcher to do so.

Not to mention clinching the worst hygiene in America with measles outbreaks in St. Louis. Oh, that is bad. Very bad. Like, Angel Stadium has had rat issues, but Busch had 3 MEASLES issues.

Other bad clinches include the Rockies with 4 straight 100 loss seasons. First team to do that since the Mets in the 60’s.

Also, at least one team has lost 100 every year since 2017. (besides 2020 because duh)

There has never been a season where 4 players have had 200 K in a season. Very close to that this year with 3 already and Riley being 7 away.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

All this discussion about next season(s) is very interesting. I think a lot of questions about “direction of the team” will happen during November. A few thinks have to be sorted (a little British in there) before December 1st. We will see the direction, but only partial until the new CBA is finalized and new owner in place.

Hey Mr. Joiner,

I just read your article, “Why a historic 100 loss season is the perfect cap to Arte Moreno’s Angels Ownership.”

It was beautifully written and drove every point home in a thoughtful manner.

The last sentence about Trout and Detmers was beyond poignant. That’s why I am so adamant that they only have 99 losses. As I said recently, I have no control over the team or how they perform, but I am very protective of it, as I have rooted for them for decades.

Yep.
A few weeks back the Rockies execs read Jeff’s posts about waiver wire position and pick position in Rounds 2 and later, and looked at each other and said “Oh crap, this guy’s right!”

I have question for the group. Realistically, the rebuild will take 3-5 years. I know that’s a little depressing. What would you like to see while the rebuild is taking place. There is or will be, a significant amount of budget available to spend, even if it’s only to a payroll level a little above 200M, and we don’t even have to spend that much. We don’t want to necessarily invest in premier players before we’re ready but we could at least try to populate our roster real major league ball players so the club was more interesting to watch while we are rebuilding instead of running a team like we currently have out there for the next 3 years. These players would be off the books by the time we started trying to put together a winner. Neto should be traded for future assets as he will not be here when we are ready to compete and he has value, but Schanuel might be an inexpensive option for the next 3 years until he’s a FA. Often people want us to be better but are emotionally attached to current players who need to be replaced.

Don’t sign anyone of significance. It just gives bitches fuel. Anyone making fore than about 10M a year while being a human being runs the risk of injury and failure and the general fan around here just can’t handle that. This gets even worse because said player will still get playing time. Which means being angry about “the paycheck” getting to play instead of “the prospect”.

Speaking of prospects, while that bitching used to be applied to situations where we had no blocked prospects, we may be seeing that change. We will need ABs to allow prospects to try and fail and try again.

On top of that, CtPG Guy deserves to go a few years without any “real” money spent on established talent. We spent ten years shitting on just about every player that made the mistake of agreeing to play for us. We deserve a cooling off period.

Just sign scrubs and stubbly old men for now.

That is certainly one path and I do agree that how are we going to find out if Nelson Rada and others are major leaguers if they don’t get to play everyday. We are going to have to suffer through some evaluating. We likely need at least several years of this.

I’ll say it differently but the same as gitch. Draft, trade for youngsters, only sign players for market contracts (playing time might be a big factor for a FA) that can be tradeable at the deadline for more youngsters. Wash, rinse, repeat. Be ready to sign big money FA 3 years from now, get in a position where you have trade able assets to be a buyer at the deadline.

It will be a minute. I’ll continue to enjoy the big A while it lasts.

Competitive vs Win it all?

My opinion only. Years ago, I decided to watch rebuilds for fun and enjoyment, I started with the Astros. Luhnow was (and is) a first class jerk but he did a very successful rebuild. #1. He traded or sold off all of his talent that were veterans. (Oswalt, Berkman, Lee, Pence, etc. #2. When he did that, he guaranteed 2-5 years of losses. #3. He restructured the FO to data driven. #4. He actually did a fairly poor job at drafting with a couple outstanding examples (Correa. Bregman, etc). #5. He did the waiver wire thing UNTIL he was mid pack and mostly QUIT. #6. He placed his best teaching coaches in the low minors. #7. When he had constructed a decent team, he then signed free agents to fill in where his draft/player development failed.

The reason he succeeded where others failed is A. he didn’t show preference to his draftees. If you can’t cut it, you can’t stay. B. He made some very bold moves. Some worked out and others bombed but he kept being “different.”

And finally, about 2016 or 2017, the local sports guy interviewed him. He did GM speak and said nothing except he was asked about data driven vs old baseball guys. He and Sig Mejdal made the data so simple. He showed one example. There was a reliever, Jose Mesa in rehab in the minors, on his computer for everyone to see, he typed in “Jose Mesa” and punched enter. The screen turned GREEN. It was designed if the old baseball guy just wanted to know what the data department thought of a player, just enter his name and it would show “ready to promote.” So trade everyone and buy out Trout, or you can’t do a rebuild and hold on to your veterans. If you aren’t going to do that, then accept a 2-3 year improvement but probably no World Series victory. Again, just an opinion.

But miracles can happen.

So during that rebuild period, did you celebrate every loss because it brought you closer to the ultimate goal or did you sometimes see yourself enjoying them win games?

Too be honest, at that time, I don’t think “cheering for a tank” ever came up. All I can remember was really hating games that should have been won – turning into a loss. That is the same today.

But when McLane sold to Crane, as is the same in LA, the tank had already started. The previous GM, Ed Wade, was already trading and selling off pieces just like this year prior to the announcement of this sale.

Emotion and fandom go hand in hand and that is why folks don’t want to see their favorite players be traded for prospects to build up the farm. But the funny thing is as soon as that player puts on different laundry (like Ohtani) that emotional love turns to emotional hate. Ahhh the joys of being a fan of a professional sports team.

Here’s my unemotional take. The team’s focus for the foreseeable future should be to build up its farm systems as well as scouting, coaching and player development. I don’t care if the big team totally sucks for a few seasons as long as the farm system and all synergies to it vastly improve.

That is why I’m in favor of trading Neto, Detmers and anyone who can net top prospects to strengthen the Farm. Let these guys develop together and in a few years a young solid big league team will emerge. At that point, supplement/compliment through free agency.

The beautiful thing is if it works it becomes a self-sustaining system with new young players replacing aging veterans and those veterans being traded for young talent before they fall off the cliff. That is how you build a top Org that is truly competitive season after season. But a team has to commit to this approach, invest in it and then build it. It takes time.

Absolutely. Crazy to think folks will think KSE sits by and wait for a 3-5 year rebuild. The owner is going to spend some dough.

With Urena, Detmers, FA pitcher 1, FA pitcher 2, RJ/Grod you are in the mix. The task will be to upgrade most of then positions on the fly while still allowing your minor leagues to develop.

That’s exactly the kind of thinking I’m concerned about, that got us onto this decade of molasses to begin with.

It’s not like there is a free agent class full of Coles, Beltres, Griffeys, etc that a rich owner could sign to boost our team by 20 WAR.

We should stay the course… finish the rebuild. Bye bye Neto and Detmers. Target 2029. 2028 if things break well. That’s only 2 years of suck. Minus a lockout probably.

But I’m such a big fan of the team and care so much that there is no possible way I could sit through a couple horrible seasons to move towards a decade of being good. No sir. I love them so much I want FA signings up the hole and a loss in the wild card next year followed by aging stars with big contracts I can moan about and 78 wins a year for five years.

I think if executed correctly it could be “the Angels have something going” in 2028. Might not be a legit AL West championship team, but a team with upward trajectory that would not be a surprise Wild Card team.

Of course health will play a big role.

That was why I posted “Do you want to be competitive next season (or at least soon) vs Do you want to win the World Series.” They are not mutually exclusive but they normally have different tracks. There are 26 spots on the regular season MLB roster. The average career is 5 years. So the farm needs to produce 5 positive WAR players every year. Not to deride any current player from the farm but they are not positive WAR players for 2026. So I see two tracks. 1. Continue to tank and any time you have a solid MLB player, trade him for additional prospects. That is a valid but a slow rebuild. 2. You sign single year FAs to make up for the lack of years of farm development. You only want to get a player that is better than what you have. Those are available and relatively cheap. Half will be a bust probably. Then at the deadline, trade for prospects even if only A/Rookie ball. That temporarily gets you a better team, and is relatively cheap. However, it can block for a year any possible minor leaguer that you need to promote. (I don’t see that being a problem with the current farm.) And 3. Don’t, Don’t, Don’t sign any 35 year old for your AAA farm team. Yes you might need someone because of an injury, but you cost all your promotable prospects a year.

Sometimes you need old AAAA men. Bring up a guy early, say because you need to try to make a Japanese star and his mom happy, and his service clock is running for no damn reason while the rest of the team is Grissom.

Health and luck. It’s not totally impossible for the Angels to be pretty good next year. There is the chance a pile of Grissom/Schanuel types up their output and the pitching stays good.

It’s also possible the A’s or Rangers are a beast next year for the same reasons….

Kroenke & Moreno were most certainly talking before Molly’s promotion on 3/6/26. A 4 billion dollar transaction takes awhile. That story is wild on its own how it went down. Anyway, sale date will be remembered more often than an internal promotion for a decaying franchise.

Molly has done well, she’s been around for a lot of the stink but is leaving it better ultimately.

I’m sure dodger fans know ownership change dates, like Red Sox fans, etc more than who was hired for POBO, GM at any given time.

Might be true for those two franchises but in this specific case we had no insight into the Moreno Kroenke conversations and the previous leadership was incompetent. Molly’s promotion was the first sign of change that actually led to significant changes.

Back in the day… my employer was undergoing a restructuring. The CEO was “retired,” and they brought in a “turnaround specialist” to put lipstick on the pig so it was ready for market. The new CEO was an acolyte of “Chainsaw” Al Dunlup.

I was far enough up the food chain at the time to be involved in the restructuring conversations. The new CEO was relentlessly focused on finding every cost possible to write off. The focus was to maximize immediate tax savings, clean up the company’s financial sheets, and make future profit growth look much more dramatic. This accounting strategy is commonly known as “taking a big bath.”

The purpose of the storytelling:

With the 2026 season nearly complete, the Angels need to use the remaining days to finish the baseball version of the accounting “big bath” strategy. The remaining losses have to serve the purpose of closing the book on the Arte Moreno era in the most graphically ugly manner possible. If done fully for maximum effect, this can serve as a bold dividing line between “the past” and the bright, new, shiny future with KSE.

I’ll wallow in the “today” to bask in the glory of the future. I trust the team will do its “worst” in the remaining games to build the foundation for the glorious turnaround that is coming.

100% mean this with all due respect. We get it. If you can stomach and/or laugh at last night’s blow pen part 68 this year, good for you! The incessant tank (even if /s) talk gets old. It’s been old. We might get the best odds, the best picks and we might even nail them and we can ALL sing hallelujah together. We’ll get there. We’ll know, soon too. You’re the one that chose not to go to the 8/2 urena v miz (aka one of our best wins of the year), correct? Or one of the summer Sunday matchups we played great in. P12 was ready to hang up the commenting earlier this season, I gave my input that he was/is a valued member and I liked the dichotomy of his posts. Who cares about my opinion, probably only when it aligns with their opinion. Tanking in MLB is.very different than any other league. There’s no clear #1 pick this year. Maybe we get a few more $$$ to allot with a higher draft pick, we get a better waiver wire, is that really going to matter?? Genuine question. The athletics, who we want to be in front of, have been doing it better and different than us for decades. As much as I love hometown Wade Meckler, we aren’t getting many of those again (imo) and until proven otherwise he’s still a flash in the pan. It’s ok to root for the tank even if the hope for immediate success is opposite of NHL, NFL, NBA. It should also be ok to root for your team to win… especially if you’re spending time, effort, & money on them.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

None of this explains to me why 99 losses is really that much cooler than 100. Much less how winning one or two extra games in a 98 loss season is “better” in the long run as we try to rebuild.

All I ever read from guys like you is “We may not get…. a high pick. Any good waiver pick ups. Any draft picks that work out. Any international signings that matter. Any HS draft picks that extra pool money may help sign. ETC” and thus…. we need win #63? It is true that most of the things that COULD happen to help us rebuild as a result of being the 2nd worst team in baseball likely won’t happen.

I just don’t see what your side of the argument is offering me at all other than the ability to tell someone “Yeah, my team may suck, but as we continue sucking remember that we have NEVER lost 100 games!” as though the Doyer or Braves fan I am saying this to gives a shit. It’s like being proud of your constant yet slightly less drastic failure.

“All I ever read” is quite the statement. Literally any of can take any angle on one another’s post. Generally negative unless you’ve been leg wrapping.

I’m not really trying to argue. No real point to make. Rooting for the “tank” is cool. I kinda get it. Maybe overkill on here a bit since like I mentioned, MLB draft isn’t like NBA, NHL or NFL. So I commented as such.

It’s ok to root for your team to win, always. It’s kind of the whole point of the game.

Have you hung out with gamblers? Who is more fun, the person who bet on the over or the under? Go under all you want, might even make sense. It’s more fun to root for the over and for your team to win games. Simple. No family guy cut away gag needed.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Oh. Are we playing stupid terminology games now instead of answering the question?

Like “I’m not really trying to argue”…. as an introduction to your argument?

So you’re saying there is no benefit to winning 63 instead of 62 games… other than vibes. Which is fine. While P12 enjoys a little semi-pointless strategy while his team absolutely sucks.

At what stage of team building/culture is it good to talk about finding a way to win/knowing and learning how to win?

Walk offs and come from behind victories are usually used as catalysts for turn arounds.

Our walk offs last week should be celebrated, I hope we see more of those from M&M. There’s positivity from last nights game, things we learned/need to be fixed too.

Rooting for a tank can make sense. Out of all the sports leagues, tanking in MLB is the least effective for a rebuild.

9/22
— Total brainfart Rengifo, err Neto.
— Neto didn’t strike out. See, I can say something nice about him.

9/20
— He also leads the team in strikeouts and errors. This speaks volumes about what the team feels about Neto. Maybe Neto’s general immaturity rubs the guys the wrong way.

9/15
— It’s easy to hate Neto and want him traded. His immaturity level is off the charts(regardless of what Gubie says). He needs to drop his stupid nickname, the gold belt and wearing blackface.

9/12
— I have been told that he is great ballplayer. We should be happy with him. Neto sucks.

I am completely aware of the benefits of the Halos losing the most games possible. As I mentioned the other day, I had the same feeling about the Kings making the playoffs last year. I understand the greater good for the future of the team.

However, I don’t see the need to hammer us constantly about the tank and celebrate the Halos losing.

I don’t hate Neto, but still want him traded, as I feel that he is worth more in young prospects than he is on the field. I don’t see this team miraculously getting better quickly like other teams have.

However, my Neto sucks comments are simply to annoy you. It was immature and I will stop posting them as long as he doesn’t do stupid things.

You’re telling me you relentlessly rail against Neto, the objective best player on the team, in a concerted effort to troll me? I don’t believe that for a second, but even if that is actually true, jeez… that is just sad dude lol.

I don’t post with the intentional goal of getting under your or anybody else’s skin. Meanwhile, you’re admitting to trashing Neto just to spite me? To believe you means accepting that you’re acting like a dick to me simply because you don’t like my posts. Think about the logic there. You’re complaining about tank talk being exhausting, while brainlessly hate-posting about Neto just to trigger me (not that I believe that, but still). Crazy 😂

Apples to oranges maybe, but Reid Detmers is putting up a lot of WAR this season too. So is Mike Trout. Neto is good but i wouldn’t say he is running away with it.

Yea, that’s true. I should’ve said over the last 2-3 years to be accurate.

You know what, shout-out to Trouty. He got thru 140+ games and delivered 4.0 WAR. Maybe it’s just me, but numbers-wise it feels like he left so much meat on the bone

Relentlessly? Living off of a little hyperbole there.

Yeah, I rail on Neto when he does stupid things. It’s not my fault that he’s had an off season. Even if he is a pretty good ballplayer, I have never cared for him. Washington may have been the only manager to getnthrough to him, but I feel that Wash failed everyone else. I love Trout and Meck and still bring it up when they mess up. Honestly, I think I bag on Moore more than anyone.

The fact that it annoys you and you actually went back to look at my posts is hysterical to me.

All good, I understand your POV. I recognize it’s probably very annoying to read my tank comments. It’s the same way I get immensely frustrated when I read “Neto sucks” for the millionth time, only for those same people to be completely silent when he does anything positive. My frustration lies squarely on me, not on those who are sharing their opinions (no matter how wrong they are).

I don’t really understand your point about the Urena/Miz game. I bought that ticket months before I knew the pitching matchup, and it happened to be the same weekend as Spider-Man. I chose to surprise my brother with movie tickets before he went on a 3-week trip. I would make that same choice every single time.

I’m not going to apologize for wanting the best lottery odds. It will be hysterical when we end up with the 6th pick anyways, and then you can remind me how useless all my pining was 🙂

It’s all good. Root for the tank, I’ll root for wins. We can both be Angels fans.

You can also literally just scroll past his comments like they are a homeless junkie on the side of the road if you want. Don’t even have to read them. The only thing that gets old is gaggle farmers who declare the thing they want poopoo’d “old”.

Sadly, you are both fans of a team that has put you in a bad situation. You are sort of the ten year old bright eyed boy who wants to demand victory no matter the circumstance because “sports” and “America” and “never give up”. That’s a good thing. He is a the owner of a wrecked car who is trying to see the value in removing undamaged chunks of the wreck and selling them…. get at least some lemons to make lemonade to then get money to buy more lemon tree seeds.

You demand positivity. He looks for the positive aspects of a negative. You think it’s stupid to “root” for your team to lose. He thinks it’s stupid to win meaningless ball games if it costs us even a slightly better shot at signing released Rule 5 casualties as we rebuild. Both are valid. Both are old.

Then there’s me. I’m just incredible.

That’s it.

calling out someones fandom because they have a different idea than you is weird, yes.

Then calling out specific games they didn’t go to and whatnot, also weird.

We all find what we find weird. Some commenters are all about the tank. Cool. I’ve supported it and know the reasoning. I voiced my frustration hearing about it as often as we do. I enjoy the angels winning more than them losing, especially in the fashion they did last night. Maybe tank talk needs its own thread. Who knows.

c’mon man, I know you’re not saying you need a safe space from tank talk. just scroll past it, you’ll be ok. only 5 games to go.

I’m definitely not saying that. I prob create the oppo of a safe space on here at times. But the tank shit can get annoying, especially since it guarantees the littlest return rate to success than every other sport. I like my gambling, over/under analogy, I used.

I read JHW links today, felt the same about the loss, then see champagne bottles (I get it, trying to make light of a shitty situation/seeing the positive). None of that changes anything I’ve posted today.

Just because MLB’s draft has a lower success rate than other leagues doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still want and root for the best draft position possible, in all rounds. Its literally setting the franchise up for a higher likelihood of future success. You clearly have convinced yourself that to do so would make you a bad fan, but you don’t need to project that onto others here who are looking at the long game instead of these meaningless ones.

This is a blog with dozens of different personalities, seems kind of excessive that you take such umbrage with Pineapple, who is almost always full of positivity. He tried to spin last night’s crap game into a positive by noting it could be beneficial when drafting. The hill you’re dying on about it is coming off pretty weird, tbh, especially after you saying you’re trolling him by constantly bashing Neto.

Do you also realize I’m Angels2020champs and NOT AngelsFanInHell, right??

Kinda embarrassing. How dare two people on a blog kinda agree and kinda not agree. Soooo weird.

Look, it really is ALL good. Again, I understand the glass half full to losing/tanking. But I should be allowed to be annoyed by the losing and manner in which we lose. Eventually, we’ll want to talk about our culture and how we need to learn how win winnable games… maybe even some of the ones we shouldn’t win (like the athletics win last night). I addressed it ONE person, seems like they took it ok. As for everyone else, uhm ok! Definitely entitled to your own op

Nope, not yet.

Our loss to the As tonight would also make it much harder for us to fall from 2 to 3.
Just sayin

The Giants have 5 more wins than the Angels. We have 5 games left. Giants have the tie breaker over us.

Here’s what I pull for:

Athletics win every remaining game including tonight.
Angels sweep Seattle to end season.
Dodgers sweep Giants this weekend.

We avoid 100 losses.
We get maximum odds.
We get 2nd position.
We get to Shufflebot to end the year.

And for all you pessimists (realists probably) please note that a turnaround similar to the White Sox can happen.

You are correct, it could. But I believe they started from a much better place. I hope for the turn around to be as brief as possible, but like the article yesterday pointed out, there is no visible short term path unless some of our minor leaguers become something they aren’t currently.

I’d much rather stack the deck statistically in our favor than do what we’ve done for a decade and rely on “sticking with the core we have and adding a few free agents and trades” and expect to suddenly compete.

And people wonder why I want to shitcan almost every bullpen arm we have. The bullpen, coupled with Suzuki’s use of it , is horrible.
