LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: AL Shutout NL

Morning Angels fans, have some links.

Angels News

Mike Trout was the only Angel All Star in the All Star Game this season. His first one he played in since 2019. Too bad he went 0-3 with a K.

But hey, former Angel Brandon Marsh made the team. And was one of only 2 players in the starting lineups to be batting over .300.

If anyone pays for MLBTraderumors, they have a piece on what the Angels should do for the trade deadline. I do not so, I will just guess by the comments that it is “sell everything damn it”.

Around Baseball

The AL shutout the NL 4-0. First shutout since 2013, 2hen the AL won 3-0.

Despite the NL being much better than the AL this season, they managed only 3 hits, which was close to the record of the worst showing of an offense in All Star Game history. Again tied with 2013.

Cody Bellinger wins the All Star Game MVP for his 2 RBI base hit in the first. A 16% WPA was the highest of any player this game.

The NL also struck out 15 times. Yeesh. Great pitching, or bad hitters?

AL has now gone 29-8-1 since 1988 in the All Star game. 48-45-2 overall.

Every team played this year. Except the Pirates. Fan voting sucks.

In non All Star Game news, MLB and the players are fighting over the 2028 LA Olympics. Apparently, the owners are the ones who want the players to play and are looking to punish players who refuse? Huh?

Turns out Rylan Lujo has the same agent as Fletcher (and Chris Cortez, Joel Hurtado, and a bunch of others).

My contact there reached out to me and asked if I’d like to interview the kid. Of course I would.

I’ll let you guys know when I get that set up. Let me know of any questions you have and I’ll try to fit them in.

Like him or not but until as good or better replacement is found Neto should remain and “no” Guzman is not a better replacement in the field or with the bat. Trading Soriano and Adell seems like good ideas, but the return should be better than another pitcher coming off of TJS as we got for Ward. Catchers are hard to come by who can call a game, field above avg. and throw above average and hit average, but we need a couple of them. We need a CF’er with wheels. With about two weeks to go until trade deadline it will be interesting what rumors get speculated for us in trades.

I would trade Neto before I would trade Soriano or Adell….

Neto has 3 more years of control and has produced 14.4 career WAR.

Jose Soriano has 2 more years of control, sad produced 6.5 career WAR, and has had TJS twice.

Adell has 1 more year of control and has produced 0.7 career WAR.

I know we’re all down on Neto right now but he’s easily the best non-Trout player on this team. I’m only trading him for a mega offer, the other 2 I’m trading this deadline

Plus Zach is hot right now.

Apr – June: .227 average with 32.1% strikeout rate
July: .300 average with 25% strikeout rate

His slugging is down a little this month but his OPS has climbed 4 months in a row:
Apr – .751
May – .786
Jun – .792
Jul – .814

This is the math that matters: when will the player be a free agent?

Adell in a little over a year.

Detmers and Soriano the year after Adell.

Then we get to Neto.

He strikes out waaaay too much and he is terrible defensively. On top of that that he has a lackadaisical attitude. Yeah, he’s talented, but to me the negatives heavily outweigh the positives…

Would have to look at WC contenders and see who needs a strikeout machine before I would say Neto could even be traded. Yes, he could be traded but I don’t think a trade partner would give us what the sims would. I would trade Soriano before Neto. Somehow after the brilliant start even Maddux isn’t getting him back to what he could do.

As an American League fan, it was an enjoyable game shutting out the National League. Sorry that Mike Trout did not get on base though. Only negative about anything to do with the event was having to listen to ARod-Big Poppi & Bonds, I just do not understand why these three cheaters are necessary as half of MLB fans look at them as I do? The HR by Lopez was 433 feet, it just looked longer 😎 HR Derby was as good as it gets with the last round. The new format was a good idea too.

The NL starting lineup was awful for an all star team. Not surprising to me they got owned.

2.5 weeks until the trade deadline. Time for some IIWJM posts I think.

There’s an article on MLB.com that speculates what the Angels will do as sellers, with some direct quotes from Moz. Who once again reiterated that he is reporting to Molly, not Arte:

With a 38-59 record heading into the All-Star break, the Angels will be sellers, but how much they decide to trade away is the big question. Starting pitchers José Soriano and Reid Detmers are potential trade candidates, but also remain under team control through 2028. Shortstop Zach Neto isn’t a free agent until 2030 and could fetch a big haul, while right fielder Jo Adell isn’t a free agent until after next year and there’s a dearth of right-handed-hitting outfielders on the market. They also could look to move a reliever such as Ryan Zeferjahn or Kirby Yates and would love to see slugger and impending free agent Jorge Soler heat up.

I wouldn’t be averse to trading Neto at this point if someone offers an insane package and just let Peraza play SS everyday. If nothing else is holding back Moore in the minors then bring him up and let him play 2B everyday for the “2nd half” and see if he’s the long-term answer there.

Soriano, Reid and Adell should be no-brainers. Let’s promise Arte he’s not going to lose a lot of ticket sales when those three are traded so he would pull the trigger.

With each of these players, including Neto, you just have to ask if you actually believe the club will be competitive during the time they are still under control (2-3 years), and if not, do you plan to extend them or buy out any of their free agent years. If the answer is no then they need to be traded as soon as you get an acceptable offer.

Unless Arte approves a full rebuild, I just don’t see both Soriano and Detmers getting traded. I also think it would be foolish to depend on the majority of the SP’s on the farm make the jump successfully. For example, I’m not sold on Dana or Klassan thus far. I’d keep Detmers unless I’m blown away by an offer.

i think we’ve already experienced the upside on Adell, so I’d look to deal him. I’d also look at opportunities to move Neto. Yates, Bachman, and Silseth should also get shopped.

I would attempt to buy out 3 of Detmers FA years and extend him so that he is around for the next 5 years. If you could work it out, he would cost less than replacing him after he leaves. If he isn’t interested, I would trade both him and Soriano, as well as the others you mention.

I understand your thinking, but when has Detmers actually been good enough to actually keep.

He is 5th in strikeouts, 7th in FIP and has a very low BB rate. He has been very unlucky with the defense behind him. In my opinion, he is very underrated.

You’ve just made the case for trading Reid 🙂. This is his peak value

I don’t disagree. My whole point was if you trade Detmers and Soriano, you will likely not have competitive pitching until Neto is gone unless you extend him. I have no issue with keeping and extending Neto if that is the plan. But if they are not planning on extending him, even if it’s not now, then all the same arguments for trading Detmers apply to Neto. Detmers will be equally hard to replace. I’m just of the opinion that I would keep or trade both now. That is not how I feel about Soriano because of injury risk.

If we just keep everyone, unless we’re planning on spending a lot of money, we’re just keeping a last place team together.

Stats are subject to cherry picking and I have done that in the past, but if you look at his expected numbers you see a pretty decent mid-rotation guy. OTH, he could bring some good prospects in a trade. For me, at least two top 25 prospects and whatever else.

The only one I see at the moment who could replace Detmers is Walbert. I don’t see anyone on the farm who could step in. Bremerton is too far away to consider. Keeping or trading is a toss up for me. To me if he is not good enough to keep he probably is not good enough to trade.

I’m so ready to see Detmers go. He is just not it (at least with Angels development).

To augment the loss of Soriano & Detmers, Halos could snag some waiver wire veteran SP trash to get through until September. Halos get prospects and directly helps the tank for a blue chipper next draft. I agree, since PM is gone, we don’t want to rush starters from the AA/AAA.

Like FungoAle said below, the team could always pick up waiver wires when Sori and Reid are gone. This team isn’t going anywhere, so just fill the team with bodies until the season is over.

OR

I would actually not be opposed to bringing up Klassen, Dana, Aldegheri, and give them the “2nd half” in the majors working directly under Mike Maddux. The team still won’t be going anywhere far, but at least use that time wisely to have Maddux coach and teach the young pitchers (while he’s still with the team). Instead of this stupid “call up then send them down after one bad start” that the team has been doing regularly. Show the kids that one bad start won’t get them sent to The Chokey, but instead they will stay for the next two months with the major league team and that Maddux will be working with them. Would do more wonders for their development (I hope).

I’m on board with bringing up Dana and Klassen for the second half of the season no matter what. I think Pineapple had the 6 man rotation idea.

The next few months should be audition time. Nothing more than Spring Training for us.

Guzman every day.

Get Rada looks.

Peraza and Grissom a ton.

To Fungo’s point about not rushing the kids — if the FO doesn’t want to promote Klassen or Dana, there’s always the option to patch together a post-deadline rotation of Urena, GRod, Johnson, Aldegheri, Farris, Manoah (lol) plus whatever vet arms are hanging around on the waiver wire or free agency.

Maybe Kikuchi comes back, pitches well and boosts his trade value for the offseason?

Lots of options.

I seriously keep forgetting Grayson is part of the Angels. It is like my mind put him on the Rendon level IL and does not even consider him.

Urena, Grayson while it lasts, Kikuchi at some point, Johnson, and whoever else will help us get the first overall pick.

It’s not fun to watch but this is why Soler just needs to be in the line up for 2-more weeks. It likely will be futile but the team is not going anywhere. Plus, a 20-year old Rada who is not really crushing it at AAA, should not be rushed. Remember, that dude who always promoted players early, is gone.

I’ve settled on keeping Neto. Shortshops who produce .770+ OPS do not grow on trees and his deficiencies (bonehead errors and strikeouts) are remediable.

Unless some team blows you away with an offer, you keep Neto and try to get an long-term extension done while his value is somewhat depressed.

I’m sure I’ll catch some flak for this, but I like this infield — Schanuel (1B), Moore (2B), Neto (SS), Guzman (3B), Peraza (UTIL), Grissom (UTIL)

Clearly the Braves had some clever maneuvering. They surely had Gracia high enough in their rankings that they felt $2.6 million under slot was a great deal. Picked up the LSU commit with some of the savings. I’m guessing they like their draft because they executed a strategy with clearly some collusion and deals in place. No doubt Hirkschkorn sent out some decoy signals.

Disappointed that the All-Stars didn’t get to wear the team’s memorial patches, like Trout didn’t have a GA patch.

this is an updated Angels top 30 prospects from some dude on Twitter. Not to be taken super seriously but it paints a decent picture of where we’re at after the draft.

Honestly it isn’t that bad and has some promise. Trading Sori, Detmers, and Adell makes it even better

Trout reiterated to the media that he has a no-trade clause and doesn’t plan on waiving it. It’s such a non-story, unless Trout wants to make it one and he’s shown no willingness to.

Trout is phat and happy. He’s got hundreds of millions of dollars, a nice family, a beautiful home in Newport and a golf course. For a simple small town kid, what else does he need? I don’t sense that he has that drive to turn his life and his family’s life upside down to chase the playoffs.

if he was traded to Philly he could actually play his new golf course when in town. Living in NB doesn’t really help with that.

I’m sure he can get in plenty of golf in Newport Beach and surrounding areas. He can become a member at any private course he chooses.

for sure, was more speaking to the comment about Trout having a golf course. Doesn’t do much good owning it when its on the other side of the country from his home and team. Also, given its location in the NE, how much does Trout really get to play it during the MLB offseason due to winter weather?

Even if he agreed, we wouldn’t get anything back, just some salary relief, but Arturo would probably have to pay someone to take him. Unlikely.

It’s totally like that. It’s the same type of lazy reporting/thinking that used to go on over at the MLB channel in middle years of Pujols tenure, where they always touted the Halos preseason b/c of Trout and Pujols (even though Pujols wasn’t even posting starter playing WAR). He is owed so much money, no one is taking on his contract and giving anything in return. And Arte’ ain’t eating enough of the contract to change that.
