LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Let Camp Begin

Welcome to the last week of the off season. On Wednesday, Angels pitchers and catcher will report to camp. So will the pitcher and catchers of real MLB teams. If that isn’t real enough for you, college baseball starts next Friday night (and I might be at the Dirtbags game).

Here are the top three things to look for as we get closer to Spring Training.

Spoiler, number one is a TV deal. Six other clubs agreed to have their games produced and distributed by MLB. Here’s how those deals impact the Angels and us. The Angels have not yet resigned themselves to joining MLB.TV but they are expected to do so. Just how will that impact us as fans? Read this and find out.

Perhaps my favorite part about Spring Training is getting to see guys I don’t expect to see all year. The Angels released a large list of non roster invitees and I think five of them are the most intriguing to follow.

Being a good story and making the actual team are two different things. In looking at the NRI’s, I rated who is most likely to be in Houston on Opening Day.

Generally early round draft picks are invited to camp as a courtesy and to let the big league coaches get a look at the kids. But in each of the last four seasons the Angels have been the first team to promote a draftee from the previous year. This year, Chase Shores is the most likely to continue that tradition.

This heat from a 6 foot 8 pitcher must get onto hitters in a hurry.

Just because Shores could be the first guy to reach the bigs, George Klassen is the arm to watch for the rotation.

With continued development, Klassen is the guy most likely to get his chance in 2026. Part of that is due to Klassen’s stuff. The other part is due to the injury concerns in the Angels bullpen and complete lack of depth.

Grayson Rodriguez also has great stuff and he’s had some MLB success. Angels fans haven’t seen a ton of him, but here’s what to expect when we do get him on the mound.

I love me a sneaky good pickup. Every year some GM makes a non descript signing that makes them look shrewd. Call it hopium, but I think Drew Pomeranz is a sneaky good pickup.

I fully realize this call could come back to bite me right in the backside, but I like the addition. And if I’m wrong, there’s no such thing as a bad one year deal, right? Ha ha.

Nelson Rada is the one position player I am excited to see. He’s on the verge of taking over center field if he can just prove the ability to hit.

From around baseball:

Tarik Skubal won his record setting arbitration case against Detroit. I’m all for increasing minimum wage and giving arb eligible players more money, even if it means giving free agents less money.

Slotting in behind Skubal this year will be Framber Valdez. This creates a great 1-2 punch in Skubal’s walk year and gives Detroit some security at the front of the rotation in the coming years.

With Cease in Toronto and Valdez in Detroit, the Baltimore Orioles are running out of options to significantly improve their rotation. They are expected to pivot, but where?

Hopefully the O’s GM can access FanGraphs, because they say rotation options abound.

I hope you have a great weekend and link what I missed. I’m going to spend the weekend with my family. Last week I went to Vegas and caught the Eagles at the Sphere. Saw U2 there a while back. I went to both concerts with my mom, which is epic. If you haven’t been there for a concert, it is incredible.

Also, played catch with my son and a kid from last year’s farm ball team. There’s still nothing like baseball to mix activity and conversation about life. The boy is taking this spring off from organized ball but still wants to play catch with Dad. I’ll take it and enjoy every minute of it.

Remember when Michael Hermosillo was prospect in our farm system. He is now a coach in the dogers org.

Feel old yet?

Hermosillo’s trajectory reminds me of Raudi Rodriguez’s. Late-rounder with just enough speed/power to outperform in the torso of the farm system, but who struggled at higher levels, despite some tantalizing tools.

Here’s hoping Raudi breaks the mold.

Here’s the Hopium Huffs for me this season….

  • A combination of pitchers from the pile of Manoah, Detmers, Pomeranz, Perdomo, Sandlin, Romano, Suter, Stephenson and Yates pitches well and we trade them at the deadline for position player prospects.
  • Soriano pitches well and we trade him for some very good prospects. Jo Adell gets off to a hot start and we do the same with him for a lesser but still solid prospect return.
  • Jorge Soler puts up good numbers for the injured Mike Trout and we trade him to a low pop contender for some lotto ticket arms. We do the same with a rejuvenated Travis D’Arnaud.
  • We see Vaughn Grissom turn out to be a solid 2B and becomes Ben Zobrist. I like that guy.
  • We either extend or trade Zach Neto, who stays healthy.
  • One or more of Denzer Guzman, Kyreeen Paris or Oswald “The Patsy” Peraza establish themselves as solid and replace Rengifo.
  • One-third of the Rodriguez, Urenas, Dana, Klassen, Mederos, Aldegheri, Johnson, Cortez, Hertado, Farris, Fermin, Johnson, Silent C, Silseth, Bauchman pile show themselves to have made big steps forward this year and have a future with the team.
  • Tyler Bremner shuts everyone the fk up.
  • SOMEONE in our system establishes themselves as a real offensive threat and Moore moves to LF because Grissom is doing so well and he thrives there.
  • Our fking draft makes some sense.

That’s it. That’s all I want. Oh. Plus my silliest “Packy Naughten for Cy Young” dream of all… Cole Fontenelle busts out big time at 3B.

Yes. Fan. I know. Hurr Durr deee Artehh sell teeeeem….

Said recently.
We only have 3 players that other teams want….. Zack Neto, Jo Adell and Jose Soriano. This team has never lost 100 games before, I’m betting on that coming to a end this season.

Yeah but F trading Soriano. We’re not the F’in Brewers. We’re the Greater LA franchise that could easily draw 3M fans if given a half a chance… maybe 3.5M given a contender. F that dermabrasion nonsense!

I suspect that Chase Shores will end up being the healthy, thus available, version of Ben Joyce.

What are the minimum numbers that Nelson Rada could post to justify a full-time job this year? I’ll go with .230 / .290 / 30 SB and +defensive metrics. Dare I say Gary Pettis esque?

Think he would need an OBP of .320 to make it worthwhile. Prefer he stays in AAA this year, unless he uncomfortably forces the issue.

Unless you’re the Yankees, the Dodgers, or the Mets, signing long term expensive contracts makes little sense. How many have worked out. The ones that have are the exception.

Then you better have a good Farm to grow players and add depth. If you aren’t going to spend money and have no Farm then you are really stuck in the mud – as the Angels have been mor more than a decade.

That’s an interesting plan for a guy that made his money selling media. So did John Malone, I imagine a huge piece of revenue would be gambling/fantasy revenue. MLB – can we finally put Pete Rose on the ballot and stop the hypocrisy?

Marcotor

Pete Rose KNEW the rules, they were clearly communicated to all MLB employees.

He said “FU to the rules, I’m Pete F’ing Rose and the rules don’t apply to me”.

So he deserves what he got. Banned. Not “hypocrity” at all. Those were the rules at the time. Sure it sucks, he was talented, “gritty”, and fun to watch. Plus all those hits. Except the corked bat ones.

Everybody counts, or nobody counts.

I guess Gaylord Perry shouldn’t have gotten in either for throwing spit balls – against the rules and gaining an advantage for his team. Nor should all the guys who took greenies. I met Rose – and he was a dick. But, he is the all time hit leader and gambling didn’t help him do it. I actually think the game would be better if each team had money on the line every game – and the odds would determine their take. Dudes would be hustling out infield grounders a lot more often – that’s for sure.

Still the rules. If anyone cheats at his place of employment and is caught lying in addition to the cheating, do they get a promotion or a raise or even get to keep their job? More than likely they do not. The Hall of Fame has in the last 19 years or so lost its luster allowing PED users in and now a guy caught cheating using a trash can, but the fans still pay to get in. The real problem is that the writers are decision makers and have very liberal views that many disagree with and that they believe that everyone should be in the HOF.

Why does MLB not just flat out make a list of banned players or for that matter let the MLBHOF do it themselves, then the voters can figure out who should be eligible.

Pete Rose does not belong in the Hall but using the behavior of the cross tops of the 60’s or the roids usage of the 90’s to justify anything about enshrinement is using bad behavior to justify bad behavior such as “All the other guys were doing it”, well all the other guys were not doing it.

HalosFanForLife

Believe it or not – I agree. But it’s comical that Bud Selig let PED’s happen and got in the HOF. A total joke. Everyone knew they were taking, even back then. He didn’t get rich enough to become a baseball team owner by being stupid. He let it happen and ultimately encouraged it.

Ohhh…. interesting. But also maybe wise. RSMs are in the toilet to an extent. This may actually be the time to buy the shell of an RSM on the cheap and build what you want. Like buying a blown out 1979 Chevy Monte Carlo for 3,000 and then spending 15,000 making it exactly what you want.

It would help if the Angels were good. But still, it’s not a bad idea for the team to own it’s own broadcast. Buy this junk and drop an LS in it baby.

I think TBS and WGN proved you don’t have to have a great product. My concern is that Arte will put more resources in building up the broadcast arm instead of improving the team. Of course, it might also prevent signing the next Rendon-level contract so there is a potential positive there.

nice to see Shores getting some good press and agree he could make the big club immediately; he’s better than Johnson I think and could easily have just as good as career as Bremner. I’m torn between wanting him to be in Anaheim right away as a Reliever or getting a starting gig in Alabama.

The biggest mark against him: he’s never had a successful full college season to date. He’s always struggled to locate, and he lost his starter role because of that.

Shores is all velo and body, and it’s all wishcasting beyond that. Perhapses and maybes. I agree w/ Fangraphs that you probably want him to cook in the minors for a couple years, in hopes of a long-tail starter outcome:

Between rust — the righty blew out in 2023 and missed most of two seasons — and his immense stature, it’s not surprising that Shores has trouble throwing strikes and hitting spots. What we don’t know is how well he’ll be able to grow in that regard as his career progresses. On the one hand, he’s a solid-average athlete with pretty good body control for his size and a frame that often requires a little patience. This presents paths to a starting role. Perhaps he’s better able to locate his sinker as he gets further away from surgery. Maybe his change, which moves plenty, ticks up with reps. It’s enough to warrant development as a starter, even if the strike-throwing, fastball shape, inconsistency, and shallow arsenal seem like a ticket for the ‘pen. Were I scouting for a team, I’d recommend exhausting Shores as a starter while turning him in as a 70-30 or 80-20 to wind up in relief.

Yep, nobody cares how hard you throw ball 4. But his stuff is filthy. If someone figures out to teach him control – not expecting command – just control – and he could be special. Definitely a high ceiling guy – but the floor is there too. Right now he’s just a thrower, but boy can he throw.

He just has to prove he can throw a full season, in any capacity. Let alone throw 100 innings.

Then he has to learn to pitch. He has one plus weapon right now, his heater. And that’s 65 grade. Depending on the scout, Shores’ slider is average or slightly above average (50-55). His change is way, way behind. His control is below average.

Compare Joyce and Cortez, who were 80 and 70 grade on their heaters at the same career point – that’s largely down to FB shape, movement, and location. Then compare Bachman, who was 70/70 on his FB/SL combo at draft time. Shores is behind all three, and none of those three have become a sustainable weapon in the Angels’ pen or rotation as of yet.

When you’re looking at an oft-injured player who doesn’t yet have a starter’s arsenal, and starts out behind three similar profiles who have disappointed thus far, all you can do is say: by golly, wish upon a star, I hope so.

Well, no games as yet, so I’m just studying their farm and getting to know their bullpen and SP pipeline. I already know the positional players pretty well.

As everyone knows, their rotation is their weakness, followed by their owner.

With all the veteran bullpen arms coming in, I kinda doubt he makes the team. It’s a much deeper group than we ended camp with last year

I kinda hope, after things get rolling in the MiLB season, the Angels find a way to sort of pepper some young arms in for innings this year. All that veteran grit in the pen, plus Maddux… it would be cool to see Johnson, Cortez, Snead, Shores and maybe even starter prospects like Klassen and Walbert get a few days and a few innings just soaking up being around those guys.

Then maybe a few of them come up after we trade away guys mid season.

cookmeister

if Snead and Shores get innings, that’s either really bad (for the big club, and potentially their development), or really good (for their development).

Well, as long as you don’t need any actual proof Shores is better than Johnson.

Because I am a servant of the god of pitching chaos I actually don’t care. I’ll be bummed if Bremner and Slawaski can’t be starters. But seriously, a nasty boys style pen of Cortez, Johnson, Shores all able to go two innings and the dream of a functional Ben Joyce or some other guy closing…. I’ll take that and be happy.

eh, I don’t necessarily agree. Arbitration is not a free market. It’s formula based.

Ohtani has the largest increase in Arb 2- Arb 3 in history (from what I have found) at a 150% raise. I’d say he’s a pretty unique case and one that would command more earning power than Skubal.

Even if you apply that same 150% raise to Skubal’s 2025 salary, you come in at $25.375, which is short of the midway point

Now I’m not saying the Tigers shouldn’t have offered more (Imo they should have offered more like $21-22), but the ask of $32 mil and then reportedly not budging/negotiating is pretty gnarly

Apparently the record arb number for a starting pitcher was David Price, 10 years ago at about $19 million. Doing the math, it’s easy to see why Tarik won.

it’s not as easy as just “winning” saying he’ss worth more than $19 mil, because of course he is. They had to prove he is worth more than $25.5 mil under the arb system, which apparently they did. It was a risk, and it paid off so good for him, but it was definitely wildly unprecedented

It was idiotic. The rule for last year players allows them to compare themselves to free agents. The Tigers offering any number that started with a 1 was stupid.

Skubal had so many data points and was coming off of back to back CY. The Tigers offered only a few more bucks than David Price won with fewer accomplishments over a decade ago. $25 million and I’m relatively sure the Tigers win that. 22-23 million and I think they would have had a shot.

Price probably over-priced himself, but he was much closer than the Tigers were, so he won.
