If I were Perry Minasian version 2026…

Welcome to my version of the “If I Were Perry Minasian” series. In order to rosterbate responsibly, we will use the following guidelines.

It’s my favorite time of the year. A chance to sharpen my pencil, look at the players on the field, and come up with a plan to make this Halo team better. Perry and our new manager are both on “show me” 1-year contracts and they will need to move the needle closer to contending for a wild card in order to keep their jobs. My goal this year is to have a more compeitive team, with the ability to punt and sell away players at the deadline when we buttercup the season and are out of the race by June. We will have little to no extra payroll in 2027, with the ability to make the team look very lucrative on paper for a potential buyer. (As long as the Skaggs trial is wrapped up this year.

My needs this year are the following:

  • Additional need for IF starter, preferrably young and cost controlled
  • More defensive minded in the OF, with giving some of our youth a chance to take one of the corner spots
  • Top of the line starter to build this SP rotation into our stregnth
  • Stronger bench pieces for late game situations
  • A veteran closer to hold small leads

Trades

Now to shake up this team and get us a little bit of payroll flexability. Values for our players aren’t that great, but in my mind, Adell AND Ward are our two biggest tradable assets. First up is Jo Adell who has the most trade value:

Angels trade Jo Adell, Caden Dana, and Chase Shores for Sonny Gray, Brendan Donovan, and $5.5 million in cash

Here is why this works for both teams.

LAA: This works as long as we have an understanding that Christian Moore is not our long term 2B and we work all spring to convert him to our new starting 3B. I like his bat so much more here, and I think it solves our long term 3B problem if we can make this work. If he can’t get it done, or needs more time, we have Guzman to fill the role at 3B. Donovan is the MI piece that is cost controlled, plays good defense and is fantastic with the bat. He and Neto become the duo up the middle for years to come. Gray has a terrilble contract ($35 million with a $30 team option or $5 million buy out) We can finally get a front line starter that pushes everyone down a step on our SP depth chart. We have the option for another year of Gray in 27′ if we choose, and the money given in this trade will keep me right at the number we need for payroll this year.

STL: This is taken straight from MLB.com.

Biggest needs: Do well with the trades that are coming. (And young starting pitching.)

After the year-long transition from John Mozeliak to Chaim Bloom, a new era of Cardinals baseball is beginning, and there’s a ton of work to do. We’re likely to see at least two of veterans Sonny Gray, Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras moved, if not all three, and Brendan Donovan would be an appealing piece to a contender if he were made available.

The Cardinals get out of a terrible contract and pick up three pieces for the future, all with multi years left on thier contracts. Adell is the center piece here and STL has a track record of doing well with the development of players. Dana is a top prospect SP who could be MLB ready and I think Shores is also a nice pick up for them. All three help with the rebuild in STL. The payroll flexibility of getting out of Gray’s contract this year is the biggest move here. Adell’s projection of $5.5 million in arbitration and only having to give $5.5 million to the Angels is a $24 million savings for them to help build out the rest of their roster.

With adding Gray’s contract I now have to move Ward for pitching prospects. I have multiple trades that all work for this, and choosing the right one is something we should debate below. I’d also really like to get Turk’s take on the prospects available in a Ward trade. Here are the trades proposed with the # in the top 30 for each teams top prospects:

Royals: #27 Josh Hansel (RP/SP) and #30 Cameron Millar

Orioles: #29 Wellington Aracena (RP/SP)

Phillies: #25 Mavis Graves (SP) and #29 Cody Bowker (SP)

Reds: (This one is my favorite) #10 Aaron Watson (2025 draft) and #30 Luke Hayden

Marlins: #27 Liomar Martinez and #28 Nate Payne. This deal might cost the Angels a little cash to pay for Ward. I estimated $1.1 million

I’m going to choose the Red’s package here as I’m getting the best prospect, but I think any of these would work for us.

Angels trade Taylor Ward to the Reds for Aaron Watson and Luke Hayden

Ward’s value was at the highest last trade deadline, but I still think he can grab us a nice piece. Watson was the 2nd round pick of the Red’s in 2025, and he would be another building block piece with Bremner for the long term look of our rotation.

Why it makes sense for the Reds? Their window is open now and they need offense in the corner OF position which Ward gives them. His contract is reasonable and if a defensive minded Harrison Bader is getting $13 million, then an offensive minded corner outfielder at the same price makes sense. It’s a big ask getting a 25′ pick, especially a 2nd rounder, but you have to give to get.

Free Agent Signings

The Angels have a few holes we need to fill especially now in the outfield. Remeber the goal of wanting to be better defensively.

Angels sign Harrison Bader to a 2 year $26 million dollar deal

Bader is our new CF and pushes Teodosio to the bench and a defensive replacement late in games. Bader’s bat is a bit of a question mark, but he holds down CF for our pitching staff. We are so much better up the middle now on this team with Neto, Donovan, and Bader.

Angels sign Kenley Jansen to a 1 year $9 million dollar deal

With Joyce still coming back from injury and no idea about Stephenson and his health (and terrible contract) I think having Jansen in for 1 more year makes too much sense. I’m a bit worried that it’s going to take more than $9million to get him as I projected $13million for this year, but FanGraphs says 9, so I’m sticking to the rules.

Having Kenley back also goes back to the Ward trade for me with BAL. The pitcher listed in the trade is closer material with a great cutter. I also wanted Kenley to mentor the young man and see how one of the all time best closers uses that pitch so effectivly.

Angels sign Chas McCormick to a 1 year $3 million dollar deal

We still have a need for an OF spot and Chas is a nice bounce back canidate. He’s hit in the big leagues, but had a set back last year with Houston and has cleared waivers looking for a starting job. The Halo’s can give him that to build his value up again for 2027. McCormick also gives us flexibility to work in one of four outfielders in RF in Soler, Trout, Teodosio, and Lugo. We also have Paris and Campero down on the farm. So we will have a camp battle for the RF position with Trout/Soler being the DH for the year. My money is on Lugo winning the RF job and Soler/Trout getting 1 day each in RF. Teodosio is the late game replacement, but I like our depth now.

Sign Jonah Heim to a Minor league deal worth $1 million if he makes the roster

This is another buy low move as the Rangers will be moving on from Heim. He’s again got a track record of hitting MLB pitching but had a terrible year in 2025. This is also a move for protection in case d’Arnaud goes down early, or if O’Hoppe can’t get it together. I think Logan will be our long term solution, but this move gives us some insurance just in case.

Here is my depth chart now:

Bader is a good match that I expect will pop up in many of these IIWPM pieces.

Though I suspect that Adell wouldn’t be a terribly attractive centerpiece to St Louis for a Donovan trade. He only has two years left, and one of those is in doubt given a potential lockout. I think they could get more reliable long-term pieces in another deal.

You asked my thoughts on the prospects in the Ward deal. It’d be unlikely that Minasian trades Ward for such a long-horizon prospect as Watson, especially given he just loaded up with 7 prep arms in the last draft, and has several more from previous drafts. I like Watson, but he’s likely a 4+ year project, in the same tier of talent as Slawinski, Mitchell and Haley from the ’25 draft – and just as variable.

I think Luke Hayden is probably not a starter long-term. I think he’s a low-leverage bulk reliever in about two years. His command is a big issue, and he didn’t show much improvement last season in high-A.

Ward doesn’t have a ton of excess value right now, but I’d probably look to Kansas City for a match there. I don’t like a lot of their younger pitching prospects, but they have a ton of MLB-ready arms who debuted last year, for example one of their deadline acquisitions – Kolek or Bergert (depending on the latter’s medicals). Not sure how the Dodgers value Adell, but I like them as a potential match for Jo, as their system is incomparably deep in OF prospects, far more than they can find MLB homes for.

In terms of the other mentions, some thoughts –

KCR, Hansell: Lives and dies on his curve, late-bloomer and old for his level, probably a bullpen piece. FB is pretty meh, so a lot of development and strength training needed to get to 5th starter outcome. Would be an interesting complementary piece in a trade though.

KCR, Millar: Another prep developmental arm. Definitely a lotto ticket. I just question if Moreno greenlights moves like this, or if Minasian pursues them, since he can get all he wants in the domestic draft and his Latin programs.

Orioles, Aracena: I’m a fan. I do think he’s a leverage reliever. The Angels have a lot of these high velo wish-he-was-a-starter types in Urena, Hurtado and Cortez. The cutter-dominant approach would be an interesting look in late innings.

Phillies, Graves: Haven’t seen him in action, so just looking at reports. Tall, low-velo lefty with not a lot of strength projection left. In a finesse lefty, you obviously want more command. Could hit a ceiling in the upper minors.

Phillies, Bowker: Vandy depth arm, recent draftee. Good changeup. The sort of collegiate pitcher that I would have preferred the Angels draft in ’25 over guys like Snead and Shores. If this were one of a couple pieces in a Ward trade, with the other being more MLB ready, could make some sense.

No problem. I like Bowker and Hansell too, but would just want more than each alone in an exchange.

My Taylor Ward play with the Royals would probably be something like Ward, Snead and some cash for Ryan Bergert and Drew Beam. (Hansell could also be a throw-in there, if the Angels sent back, say, $5M.)

It’s possible that Bergert might be a TJ case next year, but the upside is enough that it could pay off long-term over 5-6 yrs of control, and he’d be rehabbing during the potential lockout year.

Always look forward to the Biggiswrth cut at this. Great job!

My one thought is, a 35-year old arm, Gray (who I really like) does not make too much sense as the Halos are not built to win now. Also a bit squeamish on Moore at 3rd but I can roll with it to see how he responds.

Digg’n Bader and Heim. Ward trade works and Jansen part 2 is solid.

Thank you!

Love how Rendon starts the year on the IL. That’s one pick you are guaranteed to get right, ha ha.

I get it, we have to take Gray’s salary in order to swing the trade for Donovan with our limited trade chips. Not a move I’d make but with Rendon coming off the books after this year if Gray is good he could be a high AAV guy on a 2 year deal, though.

You have to pick your spots to fill and you ran out of resources for third base. I think we’ll all have a hole in the lineup somewhere.

I’m certain Perry cuts loose Rendon before pitchers and catchers report. Sunk cost. But maybe Suzuki talks Perry off the ledge as Rendon and Kurt were teammates on two separate teams but I hope not.

I get the constraints of the exercise, but the 2 trades are counterintuitive to each other.

Also don’t think the Cardinals trade makes sense anyways. They have a plethora of outfielders as it is, adding Adell doesn’t really make much sense on their end.

And for us… if the trade was Adell and Shores for Donovan, that would be fine. But then we are just going to take on a $35 mil salary for free? That’s pretty hefty.

On a more broad IIWPM note: this is where I get a little confused when writing mine, because Gray is a consideration, however I’m struggling with how the $$ fits in regards to the numbers (his salary is $35, but his AAV is $25, which number are we looking at?)

You’re the one Shores bull on this site, Rex. I’ll be very intrigued (and surprised) if your all-in bet on the kid pays off.

STL is not a bad destination for Shores – need a good pitching development system to straighten him out.

I don’t know that there is a Shores consensus on CtPG, but I believe that you don’t spend a Top 50 draft pick on a bullpen piece, and Shores is a fireballer with poor command and a recent injury history that suggests it could be a recurrent issue.

Like Cortez and Bachman before him, Minasian is convinced that he can remake him as a frontline starter, and the health red flags are not a big whoop. I have more doubts. I’d happily include him in trades for high floor starting pitching (even with lower ceilings).

You have some of the same ideas I am turning in…. which is good, means I’m not too far off in the ort cloud. I think Bader is the only FA I would be really happy getting. Not because he’s some massive game changer, but he solves the CF issue for us and will be useful even if other young OF pan out. He’s a really solid roster piece that helps in a rebuild/load and after.

I traded for Watson too. He’s blocked pretty good in Cincy. He’s a good catch.

JONAH HEIM! That’s who I was trying to remember! Yes. He’d be a really good pick up that could really pay off.

I really like Gray and Donovan too, though that trade is a perfect example of feeding the human centipede we’ve built. We have no farm. You traded Adell and two prospects for a 40+ million in payroll expense (did you factor in Sonny’s 5M buy out?). We give up Adell’s trade value and two prospects to pay 45M on a pitcher we will lose next year and Donavan, who I really like, but he will just keep this loser pile company till 2028 and then he’s gone.

Even if you got players I really wouldn’t mind having, you burned a lot of resources because you don’t want to watch a team that is complete crap…. just mostly crap. The Arte method. Unless finishing 4th is just WAY more exciting than finishing 5th.

Ah. Duh. The cash you got.

Our problem is, when you try to really come to grips with how crappy the MLB roster is and how few prospects we have, there almost is no “good plan”. I’d be fine if we did what you listed out simply because I think I’d rather watch Gray and Donovan than Adell/Dana. All those pick ups are good pick ups.

My problem is we kinda sorta have almost the same team as last year again with a new condiment or two. Then we still have the same problems again going into 2027. When I look at the A’s/Rangers, even with Gray and Rendon coming off the books that winter…. we literally still need MORE than that to even shoot for 3rd place. Kinda scary.

I’m still digesting and thank you for the energy and enthusiasm- particularly as I am fully in apathy mode with this Org.

But I have a nit to pick right off the bat and on 1st reading.

Why would the Angels acquire a 35 year old Sonny Gray who is on the major downside of his career and is signed for $100m for the next 3 seasons? His 1 WAR this season cost $35m. Why would this team benefit from taking over that kind of contract when the playoffs are nowhere in sight?! Just doesn’t make any sense to me.

I like trading Adell and Ward (and others) but let’s get inexpensive youth in exchange not super expensive veterans in the sunset of their careers.

You are right – 2 years and $60m absorbed. Still makes me shake my head and ask why? Even with Donovan attached.

This go for it narrative is laughable. Perry cannot.”go for it” with 20 million to spend. There is no way to turn shit into marble. So unless Arte greatly increases payroll (highly unlikely) or Perry is an actual Middle Ages alchemist this is not a go for it year.
