If I Was Perry Minasian Ground Rules 2026

Welcome to another season of putting on our GM hats and laying out our visions for what Angels GM Perry Minasian should do to fix our ailing Halos. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to take the Angels existing roster and upgrade it to something respectable for 2026. Or tear the whole thing down and build the best farm you can. Whatever you think Perry should do, lay it out here.

Rules are important and here they are:

Salary information comes from Spotrac.com. In doing a 2 year average of payroll and adding in some guesswork, you must keep the Angels 2026 payroll at $210,000,000 meaning you have $24 million to spend before trades and non-tenders. You can backload a contract a bit to help it squeeze into the $24 million bucket but Arte has yet to do massive deferrals so no deferrals.

The list of players eligible for arbitration is here and you must you use their projected salaries if you keep them around. Conversely you gain their salaries if you non-tender them.

For free agents you must you the salary projections from MLBTradeRumors or the salary projections from FanGraphs. You can mix and match for what suits your needs.

Trades need to be realistic. While the simulator at baseballtradevalues.com is not perfect, it has been refined to be good enough to use for this exercise. Most of you won’t have a paid account to use the simulator so here’s a tip: go to the Trade Boards and type in the name of the player you wish to trade. A list of trades involving that player should pop up and you can see his most recent value. Search for players you wish to acquire and line them up. You can also try emailing me to run a scenario but with my schedule I can’t guarantee a quick turnaround.

Please keep in mind that players acquired via trade also have salaries and those must be reflected in your numbers.

So, let this be your guide as you prepare your own pieces and expect to see the staff’s versions rolling out over the coming days. Go all in for 2026 and try to save your job? Trade away everything and wish for better days? Maybe a bit of both? It is your call. Just be ready to back up your moves using logic and data and know you’ll get feedback from the board.

I am going to trade so many players you like for so many prospects you have never heard of and then sign trash…. it’s gonna be great.

that’s the best way to do it, for now. That plus a wise series of drafts

David Fletcher back on the board.

Does anyone know what happened with Fletcher? He was a quality player then all of a sudden he was basically ineffective. I’m unsure what changed.

Got traded to the Braves, where they didn’t have trout back pimple juices to consume, and tried to become a pitcher. Is probably still introducing translators to bookies as well.

I get it but he fell off a cliff here first. He went from one season being a quality player and a heart of the team to being a roster filler and triple A guy.

Yeah, that was a very steep drop-off production wise. Maybe too many late nights playing cards.

Before anyone gets too psyched up on this and thinks Ward will return something of value – per the Sim his value is quite low because of his salary/expected salary. So he comes in at a lowly 3.4.

The players with the most value are guys like Soriano (41.1), Neto (70.8), Detmers (31.6) and Schaunel (30.2) who are productive and inexpensive. Christian Moore has a 20.3 value and then there is the group between 9 and 15 which includes Joyce, Dana, Adell and Klassen.

O’Hoppe is valued at 3.9.

So – if you want to make a trade you gotta be willing to give up on some of the Angel youth you love so much. Don’t think you are going to trade Rendon or Trout for anything- they are huge negative values and no one wants them.

And there is really nothing on the farm of any real value. Most are valued at 1 or less. Bremner (16.3), Lugo (7.5) and Rada (8.3) are really the only exceptions.

So, the Angels have much of their “valuable” players in the majors. So, to make realistic trades, you will have to do at least a mini tear down and trade away guys at the major league level to build up the minor leagues. In other words, to rebuild this team you have to seriously consider trading Neto.

All of that is factual and definitely food for thought. I’m very interested to see what Perry does this year. Arte is the one who is totally clueless. He has a lame duck GM and coaching staff who have little resources to improve the team. If you want to save money, fire Perry and hire Suzuki as your GM and start a rebuild. I actually don’t think the team would be any worse than last year.

Looking at the payroll of the 40 man, including arbitration projections, is depressing.

Jeff can we be slick GM’s and sign guys to ridiculous back loaded contracts? Say Zac Gallen 3yrs 60mil; translated to first year 2mil, 2027-28 to offset that 29mil. Only asking to avoid that lazy leech Rendon’s final year of pay in 2026.

Read the rules. No backloading.

It all starts with hiring better front office baseball people, not players.
THAT MEANS PERRY NEEDS TO BE GONE AS WELL AS JOE PREBYNSKI THE DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT WHO’S HAD US AT #30 SINCE HE GOT THE JOB IN 2021.
What other team even wants our players who’s name isn’t Zack Neto? BTW none of that is gonna happen in one offseason either. This is yet another 5 yr rebuilding plan like the Cubs, Tigers, Mariners, and Astros all did in the past 15 yrs.

I realize it looks bleak with only $24 million but I with the right trades it really opens up opportunity. My series is wrapping up nicley and I don’t think it is hopelss in 2026. Are we a playoff team? Hopful but doubtful. Are we better than 2025? Yes and we are settting up for 2027 with little to no payroll. Making the team more attractive to a potential buyer. As long as Skaggs trial ends by then!

If they actually did things like you will be suggesting, then that would be true. Unfortunately, they will not do anything remotely close to that. I will go on record now saying that we will not win as many games in 2026 as we did in 2025. I do not think they will sit Soler, so I believe there is a very good chance for one of Adell or Ward to be traded. The wild card is that this is Perry’s last year so will he seriously attempt to win for reputational purposes or does he even care at this point.

There’s only $24 million in money to spend. And no 3B, no closer, two starting pitchers missing, etc.?

It sounds hopeless. Re-sign Kenley sounds like a logical move. I know Perry said they want better lefty hitting and a CF of some sort. Good luck with that.

$24m to fill all the holes with no farm system.

That’s like having a scoop of dirt to fill the Grand Canyon.

So Jansen was 10, Moncada was 5, and Anderson was 13 and Rengifo was 6. That’s already 34 but I guess it got eaten up with raises like Ward whose salary will likely double.

What would I do if I were Perry Minasian?

Hire a recruiter to find me a new job.

I have to keep in mind that this experiment is really “if I were the GM” and ignore Perry

BTW we took Reid Detmers over Garrett Croche in the 2020 MLB Draft.

Perry is signing up to staying. Don’t feel sorry for him. It’s his reputation on display. Who would even want him?

Minasian’s mostly terrible moves speak for themselves. Oakland/Las Vegas does way better with less money, and when they finally get into their new stadium, will leave us in their dust.
