Five Angels made the list of nominees for All-MLB Team. Two of them are outfielders. How did that happen? I heard our outfielders sucked. Maybe there is a reason Perry didn’t trade those guys. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Andrew Chafin were the Angels “key additions” according to Fangraphs. They generated -0.1 WAR.

Lucas Giolito will miss the wild card with an elbow injury. Jake Burger gets wrist surgery. Liam Hendricks gets ulnar nerve transposition surgery.

Management Gets The Axe

The Twins fired Rocco Baldelli.

The Giants fired Bob Melvin.

Bruce Bochy.

The White Sox are pretty much firing everybody. Anaheim is one of the places being said to have “managerial uncertainty.”

Management Gets To Stick Around

Somehow Carlos Mendoza gets to stick with the Mets.

Pirates manager Don Kelly gets an extension. Ben Cherington gets to remain with the Pirates as General Manager.

Here’s my question. Think about baseball and basketball and how many former good to great players became successful managers and coaches and how many were failures. locally, neither Jerry West or Magic Johnson could do it. Joe Torre was a very good player who had success in baseball. Ted Williams and Frank Robinson couldn’t do it. Dusty baker was another good player who was successful. there are others but the list is short. Larry Bird and didn’t Jordan try as well. Elite players very rarely make good coaches and managers because they were so gifted very few really thought about what they were doing. There are exceptions like Tony Gwynn. It would be very high risk to hire Albert or Tori without any experience.

There is no verification. Only that he is a speculative possibility. Not saying that it wouldn’t be just the sort of stunt that Arte would do, just that for now, this seems to be “Ohtani to the Bluejays and he is on a plane headed to Toronto right now”

Washington would be 74 next season. The only job he should be seeking is the Presidency – where age doesn’t matter.

I kid…I kid.

The only thing that bothers me about Washington not being retained is that Perry was front and center on the announcement. Perry should have been let go first, with the new GM / POBO / insert title here determining that cleaning house was the first step to getting a new regime in place.

The spin from the baseball media seems to be starting to solidify around the position that not picking up Washington’s option is that the Angels were somehow turning a corner under him. They were 2 games under .500, but their run differential suggested they were worse than that and so did their poor defense (supposedly a Washington strength). Washington is a good coach but not a good manager.

Teams typically do not lose 189 games over two seasons and keep the manager(s). I think that is all we are seeing here.

I don’t think even Arte is that dumb, but if it happened it would end up being and embarrassment for both Albert and the organization. Plus I just don’t see Albert being an organizational guy. He would speak his mind. it could be very entertaining.

Unfortunately:
A: Never throw up a challenge to Arte regarding baseball dumbness. He mandated a trade for Vernone Wells and the signing of Josh Hamilton when they needed pitching, not an outfielder.
B: The Angels are already an embarrassment, having missed the playoffs for 10 years straight, having lost 99 games last year, set a new record in team strike outs this year, the whole Skaggs fiasco, Hamilton fiasco, Rendone fiasco, stadium deal fiasco, etc., etc. I frankly don’t think he can get embarrassed.
C: Albert’s postgame interviews could possibly be entertaining, though I wouldn’t want him as a manager.

Yes, very hard for a good manager to overcome the doings from a bad GM.

Could be that Arte just retains Perry just to give Albert a chance. Arte saves some coin on both positions. The nightmare scenario.

Perry chose to fire Maddon years ago. The team was better with Maddon than Perry. Perry’s time is sadly just about up.

Yeah totally. Sure, you complain about PTP being a puppet endlessly, but all the sudden he switched on his Rasputin vibes and made Arte get rid of Ray Ray and Wash to save his job. What a weasel. I heard from Alana whose sister has home room with him that he wears the same socks two days in a row too. Probably a psycho killer….

I personally like Ron Washington. He’s a good baseball guy. Little bit concerned of the health moving forward and having to take a LOA for extended time and forcing in someone not ready to take control (aka Montgomery).

Stylistically, if site members prefer, I can name names so you don’t have to plow through the players in that link trying to figure it out. We will see a lot of similar articles in the next couple of months about non-tender candidates and Rule 5 eligible players. “Top 50 Free Agents” is another popular article for this time of year that would be like this.
