Angels Lose Houston Finale 8-3

The 2025 Angels take the field intent on doing 2 things: striking out and hitting dingers. Today was no exception.

After falling behind 2-0 after three innings, the dingers part of the equation kicked in. First Zach Neto extended his career high HR mark with a solo shot to get the Angels on the board.

Mike Trout followed with a single that was absolutely roped. In most ballparks it would have been a double, but in Houston it bounced off the high wall and perfectly to the left fielder. A runner on base meant the next dinger put up a crooked number. Really, any ball hammered this hard should net a crooked number.

The 3-2 lead didn’t last long. Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi was squeezed on a first pitch strike to start off the bottom of the 4th. He brought the next couple of pitches up just a bit and one was roped for a double. The next went for a game tying single. By the time the inning was over, Houston had tied the game. Another run in the bottom of the 5th put the Astros up 4-3.

Kikuchi had a subpar game today but it wasn’t horrible. In 5.2 innings he struck out 6 and only walked 2 but he got hit around quite a bit. Houston racked up 8 hits against him to go with the 4 runs. Ultimately he was charged with a 5th earned run after Chase Silseth inherited Cam Smith at first base with 2 outs and allowed him to score.

Houston activated their Luis Garcia today and he pitched pretty well overall. He did allow the 2 home runs but he also struck out 6 Angels and only allowed 3 hits in 6 innings. Garcia also did not walk a batter. Houston has the far better Luis Garcia.

Down 5-3 heading to the 8th inning the Angels needed another dinger. Logan O’Hoppe popped a single then a rocket off the bat of Zach Neto looked to be that needed dinger. But it went inches foul and the Angels stranded O’Hoppe.

Houston added an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning when Cam Smith came around to score after he should have been picked off trying to steal second base. A communication error by Neto and Chris Taylor allowed Smith to reach second safely and he scored with 2 outs in the inning. Defense has been an issue with the Angels all season. Houston ran wild all day, stealing 4 bases.

By the time diminutive cheater Jose Altuve’s 2 run blast opened up the score, the game was over. An 8-3 lead was just as insurmountable as 6-3 but did further damage to the Angels run differential.

A split in Houston really isn’t bad. Now it is on to Kansas City for 3 games.

many mentioned, back when we were 49-50, that the August/September schedule was looking difficult. So no surprise. Still, we are at a pace where we can challenge the 2021 total of 77 wins. Whoopee.

Well, they did make sure to post their 10 strikeouts minimum daily requirement!

Angels may set record but at least for this game they were on par with their opponent. Asstros struck out 9 times.

In a way the maddening thing is the overwhelming sense of meh. It’s not like the Rockies, where you know they are going to suck 80% of the time, and it’s not like you can reasonably expect a good week or two. They are just going to bumble around under .500. Madness, I tell you. Madness.

Sad thing is: Angels hang on to a player for years, before letting the player go, at which point, he is signed by another team and performs better than he ever did for the Angels. Then, that player gets DFA’d.

EXAMPLE: Jose Suarez.
Angels kept him for 6 years, during which time, he had a 5.47 ERA.
He played 3 games for the Braves this year, with a 2.45 ERA (better than any year while with the Angels). Braves DFA’d him, and no other team has since picked him up.

This is why the Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014, and hasn’t even won one playoff game since before that year.

Angels will hang on to their players (the ones that come up through the farm system), no matter how badly those players hurt the team.

The Braves (although they have a worse record this year) are not afraid to DFA players who will harm the team’s chances to win. They don’t wait for the player to destroy a team’s season.

That’s why teams like the Braves (whether you use 10-yr, 20-yr, or all time records) are a far superior team than the Angels.

Angels will have a better chance to win, once they stop hanging on to players like Rengifo (through 7 seasons, he’s averaged 1.6 WAR. The average MLB player has a 2.0 WAR).
7 freaking years of Rengifo.
2026 makes it 8, because I fully expect Angels to sign him.

Moniak and even Jeremiah Jackson are playing well this year after we dumped them.

I maintain that Moniak is not doing well. He has a negative bWAR and is only hitting in Colorado

Fair enough, but he still has 18 HRs, fields decently, and would be useful on a team utterly lacking in OF depth.

I agree that Moniak is not really doing well but also agree, he’d be useful as we lack OF depth but not that useful. My beef is that Moniak was let go to make room for Tim “Soft Jaw” Anderson.

So since the team sucks and nothing positive to talk about there I’ll share positive Halo story. So proud of my boy. His cousin is a dodger fan and never shuts up about how much the Angels suck. My 5 yr old cut him off and said “I’m an Angels fan no matter what”. Damn near brought a tear to my eye

He should have give his cousin a peace sign. Then said, two, two sweeps this year.

More disappointed in myself for watching this. I told my wife I was headed to the front room to watch it, and she just asked why I would watch that, you know they’re going to lose (they were up 3-2 at the time). I said because I like the self-torture. Well, here we are.

I’ve been at it since 1961. My wife who’s been with me for 42 years thinks I’m insane.

I met my wife in 1974 and became an Angels fan in 1977. My wife didn’t make it through this past winter and my love of the Angels isn’t doing too well, either.

You probably mentioned it before but very sorry to hear about your wife. I met mine in 78. Been an Angel fan since their inception when my dad followed them. He was a swing music fan so he listened Autry’s radio station KMPC. Also, he grew up in the Bronx so he hated the Dodgers.

thanks, brother, appreciate it. Funny about the Dodgers. My Dad was a big Brooklyn fan. Campy, Duke, Jackie, Furillo, Hodges…that was a team that could be loved. Before my time pretty much. Compare that lovable, or at least likeable, team to Garvey, Cey, Lopes….and it has just kept getting worse.

Me too. She insisted I go to Games 6-7 of the WS even though I was convinced I would bring bad luck. Those two games were the highlight of my fan career. I’m convinced the Rally Monkey I bought right before the Game 6 rally is the reason we won. 😀
