LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Worst of Times

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

Angels lost again. Jansen proved AGAIN that he cannot be in a non save situation.

But at least the Angels have the 10th best announcing booth in MLB. Patrick O’Neal is why they aren’t in the top 5 as he got an F-.

And Neto got AL Player of the Week last week! Awesome!

Around Baseball

Worst news, ESPN is buying MLB.TV. Yes, you heard that right, ESPN is buying MLB.TV. This is after they bought NFL Redzone. How is this not a sports monopoly? Be prepared to have gambling ad infested sports while paying through the nose for ESPN + Ultra MAX or whatever it will be.

Oh right, and NBC/Peacock gets a few games. And no more Apple TV games. Netflix gets the Home Run Derby. Yeah, this is a really messed up timeline.

Tommy Pham is the perfect heel for MLB. He batflips a walk to start a fight, then picks a fight with fans online afterwards. Then he doubles down on what he said to a fan before deleting everything. And the ‘facts’ he was on about were that the player involved took adderall. You know, the ADHD medication? Yeah Tommy Pham everyone…

Speaking of idiocy, Victor Robles is rehabbing and threw a bat, causing him to be suspended 10 games.

The Rockies have a bigger payroll than the Brewers. Proof again that money does not equal results.

Houston was shutout for their 3rd straight game. First time this happened in 40 years.

A 6 way split screen in a Mets broadcast. That is certainly a unique angle.

Gabriel Davalillo was the top catcher in the 2025 international signing class and signed with the Angels in January.

In the DSL this summer. he’s hitting .302/.408/.518 with seven home runs and 23 walks to 21 strikeouts.

But it’s his underlying data that makes him impeccable.

That’s a horrible right side of the infield. And that’s not good against a team with contact skills and speed.

In game 1, the Reds had triples from players leading off an inning 3 times (first time a visiting team has done that)
In game 2, Elly de la Cruz, while on 1B, scored a run on a single. He did this twice.

What’s in store for game 3?
Kikuchi getting knocked out of the game in the 1st inning?
A perfect game by Nick Martinez?

For today,
Martinez has faced the Angels 13 times, going 3-3, with 3.02 ERA
For the season, he’s 10-9, ERA of 4.73

Kikuchi has faced Reds once, no decision, with 4.15 ERA
For the season, he’s 6-8, with ERA of 3.52

Angels are favored to win.
All I want is a Trout homer.

Stupid article alert:

MLB: Is Mike Trout’s Hall of Fame Plaque in the Hands of the Angels?

The article (Via horrible opining) that in order for Trout to make the HoF, he needs to be traded so he can play on a contender. Even in this schlock of an article, they state Trout’s 87 wins over replacement stat. Sure, while Trout would like to play for a contender, he doesn’t need to be traded to make it into Cooperstown.

Trout’s case for the HOF will be more damaged by his declining production in the latter years of career more so than not playing for a contender.

He looked pretty good last night BTW.

I absolutely agree.
Once he completes this contract, he will have played for 20 years.
Can you imagine the following hypothetical stats for his career, after 20 years in MLB:

  • 450 HRs
  • 1200 RBIs
  • 0.280 BA

That’s not exactly HOF stats, for 20 years.
These next 5 years could destroy a lot of the wonderful stats he’s put up.

Look at Pujols.
When he left Cardinals (12 years), he had 0.326 BA, with 7784 plate appearances.
Pujols did so poorly in 10 years with Angels (averaging 0.256 BA) that his career BA dropped to 0.296.

Nevertheless, I’m praying Trout can average 22 HR, 78 RBIs for the next 5 years (in line with Albert Pujols’ average during his time with the Angels)

Trout will be a HOF’er, but other than 3 MVP’s and 87 WAR as both mentioned he really y does not have the numbers for the HOF, 3000 hits, 500 HRs, !500 R/S, 1500 RBI, 500 Doubles, 500 SB. Post Season did not stop many of those in already in. The system in place for entrance is seriously flawed and allows to many not qualified voted in.

Sadly, as the decades go by, HOF will be so diluted that 50% of those playing ball will be in HOF (as Veterans committee votes a ton of the players into the HOF).

Players who should not be in HOF

— Freddie Lindstrom: 13 seasons, 0.311 BA, 103 HR, 779 RBIs, No World Series, no All-Star games

— Ray Shalk, 18 seasons, 0.253 with 1,354 hits and 594 RBI

— Herb Pennock: 22 seasons, 241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts

There’s many more players I could add to the list.

Just an observation of what I’ve personally witnessed while visiting Portland. I used to work downtime on 5th & Alder. Even a decade ago I had some seriously whacked out encounters with street people, homeless skater gangs and such who wanted either my money or my life.

I loved a lot of what it once offered and still enjoy going back to where my daughter lives in the Pearl but we really mind locations and timing.

This past weekend I spent 4 days in the “liberal hellscape” that is San Francisco with my 12 yo daughter going all over the city doing a ton of fun stuff. Gorgeous city, never felt unsafe for a moment. Saw 1 homeless person the entire time. Yet a good majority of the country is convinced if they step a foot in that city they’ll be murdered by a homeless person taking a shit on them.

Your comment about well-run teams like the Brewers making the playoffs and I decided to use AI to see what really works. Let me know what you think…

Here’s what I found on the correlation between payroll and playoff appearances in MLB over roughly the past 20 years, based on available analyses and datasets:

Summary of Findings (Approx. 2005–2024)1. Top-Spending Teams Generally Playoff-Bound
Data consistently show that teams with higher payrolls are more likely to make the postseason. For example, Reddit discussions and fan data from 2024 suggest that 7 of the top 10 payroll teams made the playoffs, while only 3 to 6 teams from the bottom 20 made it—indicating a significant tilt toward high spenders FanGraphs Baseball+11Reddit+11LinkedIn+11.
2. Still Room for Low-Budget Winners
Despite the spending disparity, several lower payroll teams still make the playoffs each year. In 2014 and 2015, for instance, half the playoff teams came from outside the top 10 payroll clusters RedditThe Point of Pittsburgh. That suggests payroll isn’t everything—smarts, player development, and team chemistry still matter.
3. Cumulative Spending vs. Single-Year Payroll
Some analyses show that cumulative spending over multiple seasons has a stronger—but still modest—correlation with postseason success than a single year’s payroll. This points to sustained investment being more predictive than one-off splurges soar.suny.edu+15Wikipedia+15Harvard Sports Analysis Collective+15The Wall Street Journal+11FanGraphs Baseball+11sports.betmgm.com+11.

What This Means for the Angels (and Us Fans)

  1. Dumping a ton of cash increases the odds—but doesn’t guarantee playoff baseball.
  2. Building smart—through development and savvy trades—can overcome budget constraints.
  3. Over the last two decades, there’s a clear pattern: cheap wins still happen, but consistently winning usually requires investment.

The Angels are the favorites to sign Dominican SS Yeison Horton, projected among the top 20 talents for the upcoming 2025-2026 class, per source.

Horton was set to sign with the Yankees until they lost $1 M of their international budget by signing free agent Max Fried.

from BA – it’s 16th highest. more:
Once expected to sign with the Yankees, Horton now is set to be the top bonus signing this year for the Angels. Horton stood out at an early age for his lefthanded hitting ability, speed, defense and arm strength. He hasn’t grown much in stature since then, so he’s smaller relative to some of the other prominent prospects for 2026, but his combination of athleticism and offensive upside stand out. Scouts highest on Horton liked both his contact skills and ability to produce hard contact for his size against live pitching. It’s a thin build with more strength projection remaining, so while he doesn’t project as a huge power threat, there should be more extra-base impact coming once he fills out. He’s an above-average runner with an average arm who has the hands and footwork to stay in the middle infield, whether it ends up being at shortstop or second base long term

I respect all the opinions expressed in this thread. I’m not looking to initiate a jihad.

His most frequent comps remain Rob Deer and Mark Trumbo. Through roughly 1400 MLB at-bats, Deer and Trumbo have better slash lines than Adell.

Adell mashes HRs and that’s been it thus far career to date (1388 at bats). His defense is below average, his batting average is not desirable, and his on-base percentage is ugly. This data is even with his marked improvement this season.

Yes, Adell has “freakish” athletic ability however history has shown this does not always translate into outstanding baseball performance and results. Could Adell be a “Gold Glove” winning outfielder with “at or above” league average AVG and OBP while retaining the power? Sure – anything is possible. However, there’s no evidence thus far to assess that outcome to be probable.

IMHO, Adell is someone you consider to trade and not retain as a “foundational” piece to build around.

Have a good day!

Ward’s 1st year as a full-time player was at 28 where he had 3.5 WAR. Ward is a FA after next year and Jo is a FA after the following year. Ward has been a far superior hitter than Adell. I’m not sure either one of them should be considered part of our future.

8 years in the system and we have a low OBP guy who is a so-so to questionable right fielder who can hit some HRs now and then, but certainly doesn’t lead the league. This is why I always have an issue with a draft strategy that is “Choose the best athlete available”. Okay, he is a heck of an athlete, but is he a baseball player???

Yup. He isn’t GOOD yet. He is vastly improved and on the road to good. But that’s not GOOD just yet. I’d still hold onto him. If we had some stud OF prospect pushing for time I’d feel different. Or if we could trade him for a couple 50 grades.

I generally agree, you need to look at the whole picture and you have far greater needs. Nobody wants our junk, and that’s all people seem to be willing to trade. No one wants to trade players who are even reasonably good but you have to trade good players to get players. My position is that if we don’t think we will be a playoff team in the next 2 years, then we should move people who aren’t going to be here after that for younger players. Neto is the only position player that I would build around on the current team. Honestly, if I were Perry, I would be trading everyone (position players) but Neto and Trout this winter for younger players. I’ll be speared for this but Ward, O’Hoppe, Adell, and Schanuel, are not going to lead this team to the playoffs. With that said, as you mentioned, we currently have no replacements for any of them in our minor league system.

Jo’s first half stats: 243/.317/.483
MLB average: .246/.316/.404

Those first half stats were over 89 games, and featured above average marks in May and June, so he’s capable of sustaining league average on-base marks for long stretches with his present approach.

Sustaining his present approach is the challenge, and keeping him in RF helps in maximizing his value.

This is where they need to make some tough decisions when it comes to Adell, Trout, and Soler. I don’t see them releasing Soler or paying him 13M to sit on the bench. It’s likely they try to trade him over the winter if they plan to DH Trout and Play Jo in RF.

Hard for me to know if No. 10 is deserving for the broadcast crew but an F- for O’Neal is fair. Good call. O’Neal…sucks at PbP. Constantly trying to eat the mic. He has no feel and should let the game lead the conversation. Just no air between his delivery and the enthusiasm comes off fake. I think he’s fine doing intermissions with the Kings. I turn off the postgames (win or lose) when O’Neal has the mic. On the road, Erica gets the call, nice.

That god O’Neal does not come anywhere around the Lakers.

Wayne and Gubi are ok but Gubi is way too soft and political, afraid to callout the home team when botching a play. Not much of an analyst but he’s ok for a conversation. Langton 10x what Gubi does.

I like guys who know the game, analyzing the game. If a player over throws a cut off man or fails to get to advance on the base paths when he should have, I like to hear about it vs being ignored. It should be spoken about. The Halo radio crew is much more aware of the intricacies and nuances of how the game is played and don’t’ hold back. If a pitcher does not have it in a given night, go ahead and tell me what my eyes are already telling me. I don’t care about f’n Exit Velocities

In the 80’s, used to love listening to Harry Carry and Steve Stone call Cubs games. Harry was a big homer of course but Stone was super on top of analyzing the game. Made the broadcast worth listening to. Later on, the organization let Steve go to the South Side because they wore tired of his critiquing the home team.

Was I wrong about standing pat at the deadline? Yeah, oh well. Won’t be the last time either 😇.

What was I not wrong about? Neto and Adell are dudes. Neto is a star and Adell’s ceiling is tantalizingly high.

Trout is gonna have to succumb to being an eternal DH for the remainder of his career because Adell’s home is RF. Give me .240 / .320 / .500, 30+ 💣s, and GG caliber defense in RF all day.

Still going to hold out hope that we finish with 81 wins.

“staying pat at the deadline” is the correct answer – the goal is to have a competitive team in 2026 Perry didn’t mess that up. Nothing really could have been done with this team at the deadline anyways that would have made a difference in 2025.

What is Minasian going to do with Soler’s contract next year. Even more dead money.

He needs to be waived within 2-weeks, eat the cash. Giants are still on the hook for part of it.

As we can see, Trout’s a DH only now, we need a viable 4th OF with legs. Thus, Soler will be waived. Book it.

Therein lies the problem. Minasian can’t look bad to Arturo if he wants to keep his job, so he will stay and continue to clog the roster.

On big thing i appreciated about Perry, he cut Albert and Justin Upton. He certainly must have convinced Arte they were clogging the roster. I still predict, Soler will be bye-bye.

I remember Scioscia cutting Guillen during the 2004 playoff chase.

Team should have cut Guihiffy yesterday.

Yeah, I remember Guillen crossed a line and was put on the permanent shit list. I forget what the issue was but SocioScia was not taking him back. Jose Guillen had a cannon arm.

Perry muddled up this year to start the season roster (Newman, Moncada, cutting Moniak, Tim Anderson, JD Davis, Kingery, Hendricks –
I guess he had to find some bodys though)

then came the trade line and again, some serviceable players for 2025 but nothing more than that.

Jansen and D’arnaud are pros, they’ve helped but unless Perry finds WC in 2026 and help at 3B, Manager/staff, and of course, Pitching, he needs to go.

Through crap against the wall and none of it sticking. That said, I thought bringing in Moncada was okay, although injuries killed it.

at this point, I think Moore needs to plat every day, and Rengifo does not any PT except in the case of injuries. So glad Arturo vetoed the trade with the Doyers where we get Pages.

Yeah, the bodies and moves at the beginning of the year weee questionable as we sit here now. Moniak was a head scratcher given the shortage of OF in the organization. Funny, I thought Newman was a sneaky good pick up for the minimum but he just struggled.

A year ago Newman had a 2.2 bWAR and was local hero. Biggest disappointment since Matt Joyce.

Yeah. With a March time mind, Newman and Moncada were perfectly fine roster ads. They just didn’t work out, which happens.

It will be very interesting to see what they do next year with all the OFs. Specifically RF, CF, and DH.

I think all the 2026 OFs are all here in the organization now, so that’s the starting point, and with the money committed, it will likely start the same as 2025:
Ward/Adell/Trout and Soler

And I see four kids also that will be important depth: Rada, Teo, Lugo, Paris

That’s eight OFs that will get some at bats.

Internal options without FA or trades:

C: O’Hoppe
1B: Schanuel
2B: Moore
SS: Neto
3B: 🍍 12?
LF: Ward
CF: Rada
RF: Adell
DH: Trout

Bench: D’Arnaud, Soler
MiLB depth: Teodosio, Paris, Lugo, Kavadas

SP: Soriano, Kikuchi, Detmers, Mederos, Kochanowicz

RP: Burke, Joyce, Stephenson, Fermin, Bachman

Most pressing needs in order: 3B, SP, RP

I really like this with the addition of some Arte cash.
And I hope Aaron Boone gets fired and Arte go gets him instead of a previous former player with zero experience (Pujols, Torii) . Manager, after 3B, the biggest worry for me.

it may not be the ‘worst of times’, but it isn’t ‘great expectations’ either.

I believe the most likely scenario is that one of Trout or Soler will play RF and the other will DH. Adell will play CF. For all the love of Moore, he is currently 23% below average as a hitter. Our catchers are 16% and 24% below average as hitters and all of our CFs are well below average. 3B is the same if Moncada leaves. And even among the others, For all his HRs, Adell is just 6% above average and Schanuel is 10% above average with a sub .400 Slg% at 1B. I believe the line up will look very close to what you have listed, and as a result, we should not be expecting great things in 2026 if it does.

Internal option could be Guzman at 3B, but I’d prefer the team sign someone, maybe to a 1- or 2-year contract and let Guzman learn the position before bringing him up.

Guzman has come crashing back to earth in AAA. His bat isn’t as close to MLB-ready as Rada’s is

I expect Peraza to be the utility man, but I suppose he couldn’t do worse as a regular than some of this year’s crop of free agents.

That is the way I see it too, Oswaldo “Geico” Peraza, insurance only. Halos will need to solve their 3rd base from outside the organization.

I believe that Moncada is our best option at 3B if healthy. If he needs surgery, let’s get it done now to ensure he is healthy and rehabbed for ST. Let Peraza finish the season at 3B to see if he is the answer for Utility infielder for 2026. DFA or release Rengifo to start getting the stink out of the locker room.

I really like Teo’s defense and speed as those attributes don’t have slumps. I’d give him a shot to see how his bat plays as I really don’t see Trout playing in the outfield. Adell is a pretty right fielder but isn’t good in center.

I think the criticism of Patrick O’Neal is harsh and unnecessary. He fills in and does a decent job of it. Not being a regular PxP guy, he does not get a real opportunity to hone his craft. It takes a lot of guts to get behind that mic, fight the butterflies and announce the game. This is typical tearing down by trolls rather than building up.

I swear his tag line could be “fan bro takes the mic” … he’s like a Halo Honk disciple thrust into a position.

I agree – he does a bang up job as a fill-in. Much better than Jose Mota’s few attempts at PxP in the past when they had some scheduling / personnel issues.

I think it’s more a situation of “cheap Arte” hate than anything. Patrick is just caught in the crossfire.

Agree but the cheap-Arte frustration has lots of better landing places than Patrick O’Neal.

I like Patrick tons. He does the Kings pregame show there too, but the Kings would be kicked out of the NHL if they let him do hockey PXP. Him and Jarret Stoll are a nice pregame though.

Victor, Matty V, Wayne – I like them all for awhile, but they can quickly be insufferable too – they are similar but having them rotate helps.

A lot of Patrick’s appeal to me is the fact he is indeed a fellow So Cal bro, so it’s like a buddy from high school is calling the game. I’d hate to hear Patrick call every game but I’m glad he is in the mix. At this point, Wayne can take the rest of the year off and I’d be happy with Matty V/Patrick at 50/50.

All those other teams in the Top 10, I would listen too usually over the Angels broadcast half the time.

Im also watching the Mets a lot more than the Yankees for 4pm games this year – that’s a true MLB Booth, then at 640 pm it’s over our guys and a big step down.

Gubi is awesome, the problem is his partners think they are entertainers so they go clown show – its ok but to gets mundane. I’d like to see a broadcast with more baseball and less clown show – that”s the Angels main problem.

Woah, woah, woah. Are you disparaging the great Jose Mota??? Whom without, we wouldn’t have the classic gem “Play well enough until something good also happens for you!” , or whatever the quote was exactly, and he is a CSUF alumnus. He is actually a really nice guy and very approachable. I would love for him to be the play by play guy, his quick translations from Spanish to English, and the English gaffs perfectly sync with the product on the field! If we are not going to get a Victor Rojas, then we may as well go 180 opposite.

Robles heaved the bat toward the mound, he did not “Juan Marichal” the bat. He got tossed. The pitcher did not. Yet another stupid umpiring decision.

Having been hit by pitches three times already in the series by Las Vegas pitchers, including a fastball to the ribs from Estes a few days earlier”
