LA Angels Thursday News Crash:

The Angels acquired Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia yesterday. Everybody says all the pitches hitting Angels batters on Tuesday were not intentional but people did a lot of yelling nonetheless.

The Cubs just designated Vidal Brujan for assignment to make room for catcher/DH Moises Ballesteros. The Orioles traded right-hander Seranthony Dominguez to the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league right-haner Jauron Watts-Brown. The Tigers just designated Tyler Owens for assignment.

Red Sox just acquired Steven Matz.

The Mariners just acquired Eugenio Suarez.

The Cubs acquired Andrew Kittredge.

The Reds acquired Zach Litell in a deal involving the Dodgers and Tampa Bay.

The Astros will be getting infielder Ramon Urias.

Ronald Acuna is on the injured list with an Achilles tendon issue. He has gone back to Atlanta to have an MRI.

Getting away from the Angel dead-deadline day, how about the Reds and Braves game tonight? During the 8th inning, both teams scored 8-runs. Crazy-ass stuff.

Does it seem to any of you guys like PTP is not acting like a GM that is about to lose his job at all?

Just asking in case a few of you want to have a stroke.

He knows he’ll be a Walmart store manager in Texas or Oklahoma soon. No other MLB team wants him.

WHY SO QUIET?

Ward was another name that generated trade rumors as someone with another year of control, but this year’s market didn’t see promising enough returns for outfielders to entice the Angels’ front office.

At the end of the day, Minasian had two reasons why he decided to keep a low profile at the deadline. The first reason is the group of guys in the clubhouse.

“Looking at the club and where we currently are, and obviously, we’re very competitive, ‘why don’t we keep this group together?’” Minasian said. “It’s a really good mix. It’s the best clubhouse I’ve had in the five years I’ve been here. The players would tell you the same thing.”

The second reason is the development of the young core already in place.

“Being competitive in August and September is really, really important for this group,” Minasian said. “Not only for the now but for the future. Playing meaningful games, understanding there’s an expectation to win, showing up to the ballpark every day feeling like you have a chance to win over a six-month period.

“It’s hard to quantify, but I felt like it was very, very important for this group to go through that and to see what playing in August and what playing in September is like, with the amount of want to and the experience around them, will only benefit going forward.”

Welp. He is around them all the time. Maybe this is a secret unicorn clubhouse that’s so special they will get really really hot. It’s not probable, but it’s not impossible. I doubt he actually made this choice free of Arte. But I also doubt he made this choice free of the managers and coaches. Maybe he got an ear full of “special” from them too? I’ll never know.

Like I said, probly no happening. But hey, if it does, then damn, that platypus had his ear to the grind stone.

Could have dealt off the expiration contracts and kept the core. But, maybe it is a code word for extending Anderson and Jansen. Moncada and Heefo won’t be asked back.

I have to give him an F. Doing nothing at all would have been better. He gave the Yankees International draft money for an infielder who can’t hit, when this team actually could use some impact bats. Guys that can hit above the Mendoza line. And bringing back Luis Garcia, for a 3rd time? Why? Is he Perry’s bridge partner during the offseason?

Define meaningful baseball. Is playing .500 the rest of the way and being eliminated with 10 games remaining anymore meaningful than being eliminated with 25 games remaining like last year?

And starting over again next year with a somewhat limited budget.

Yes, my thoughts exactly.

This smells like Arte interference. There is no way we’ll ever know for sure, because obviously Perry will never admit that.

Arte probably saw the excitement at the ballpark with the last few wins, and decided he couldn’t stand “surrendering” the season at this point and seeing fan interest wane for the rest of the season. He wants to string along the casual fans.
Never mind that this exact strategy has been tried for a decade and now has us as the laughing stock of professional sports.

So they don’t need to get better now or in the future. They’re just good as is. Got it. I’m sorry, he’s deluded. All of the players that leave this year and next will still need to be replaced either with prospects that they don’t have or expensive players they have to buy. Makes sense to me.

Yup. I’m sure Arte was like “Trade who ever you need to trade, just do your thing” and this is what Perry came up with. The incredible benefits of 8 more weeks of the same stuff.

I think it’s clear the Angels are chasing .500. They can get close with their full roster. I told you all Perry is hunting at least 75 wins, he’ll be happy at 79-83 a 16 game improvement and sell 2026 tickets as “the year”

I’d say, his job should be on the line if the Halos play less than .500 baseball from Aug 1 thru the end of the year, to validate he was correct in choosing to not invest in future.

Angels WS betting odds are now $80,000 which I believe means $80,000 for a $100 bet or 800 to 1. That is slightly better than the White Sox which pays $100,000 or 1000 to 1. Might be worth putting $20 down just for fun. It would pay $16,000 in the unlikely event.

I honestly thought today that I’d like to just be a fan of another team starting now.

But as others have said, I’ve been an Angels fan way too long now and I don’t think I would do it.

One day Arte will sell and then things might change.

Looks like the Halos will get to do their annual “spoiler” role in September, you know occasionally knock off a win against a team in the playoff chase. I didn’t say they play the role well, but they’ve had lots of experience at it. It’s the best I’ve got for keeping this team intact at trading deadline.

As a GM has Perry Minasian ever put together a winner? Hmm, do you really think the ’25 Angels are playoff bound? Next season Trout, Jansen, Anderson, Ward will be another year older, not necessarily better but older. Is Trouty going to be better or is this a career year for Ward or will Jansen be resigned? I do not at all understand what the fu-k just happened by not improving this team by trading older players for a few younger ones as other teams have done. Ward has no value in packaging him with Jensen or Rengifo, or all 3 together to say a Toronto? This is how team sports operate by making sound and smart moves, not standing pat with a losing team and saying they are going to play meaningful games for the next two months. There is a lot of spin going on here.

I think they would have been better off doing nothing at all. They pissed away In. Signing bonus money for a guy hitting .153, are the Angels hitting instructors are not going to improve that. All but 2. On this team are hitting below .250!!!! That it terrible. Why bring back Luis Garcia? He has sucked this year which is why the Dodgers already cut him loose. Just a stupid, incompetent trade deadline for Perry. Grade- F

Home games we should just take the field to this music. With a new black City Connect Jersey. “ … and the agony of defeat” spelled out on the back of the mound in white chalk.
Hopefully by 2035 we’ll string together some drafts, off-season signings, trade deadline deals. Maybe be around .500 and get SUPER LUCKY one of these years, and finally have the Thrill of Victory!

Baseball Prospectus Angels playoff odds: 1.3%
Fangraphs playoff odds: 3.5%

As the Mariners are playing the Rangers tonight, one of these teams will win, and the Angels will drop a half game further behind WC3. So, even without playing a game tonight, these odds will diminish further. The WC3 holder will be six games over .500, and the Angels will be three games under .500.

I keep reading in this thread that the Angels are in contention. Perry Minasian says, without qualification or irony, that the team as currently built is competitive.

Can’t say I share the same definition of contending or competing when the odds of missing the playoffs are in the 97-99% range.

Parlayed on top of the play-off odds, the contention comment is comical when the team is trolling well below average in MLB wide key statistics. Just not a solid fundamental team in many areas.

I would have thought coming into this year on the heels of the Luis Garcia and Estevez trade, he would have doubled down this week and acquired a six-pack or more of prospects to build out the farm. Angels need position player prospects desperately. If you trade Jansen, the playoff odds above would not drop.

Plus, many of the teams actually in contention – with fairly robust playoff odds – got stronger at the deadline.

But yes, from a fundamentals standpoint, the team is in the bottom third in so many categories in the AL – especially when it comes to pitching and defense. It really only stands out for the slugging.

Many of the aggregate metrics mirror the team’s place in the standings, and it’s strange to try to spin the 11th best record (of 15 teams) in the AL as some sort of competitive placement.

The Angels had a better record than currently at the deadline in 2019, 2021 and 2023, so it’s not like the current context is novel, or suggestive of impending improvement.

As I mentioned above, Vegas has them at $80,000 for a $100 bet to win the WS or 800 to 1 which I think means they view their chances of that at approximately 1/10th of 1% or .0001.

Math like this is why I just can’t understand the sentiment of “let’s see the season thru.”

With the choice Perry made, there is a miniscule chance of playoffs, and a 0% chance that he upgraded the farm with anything that can improve the future of the team.
With selling off, the playoff chance would probably be 0%, but with some possible or even probable chance of improving our future (depending on how he traded).
The latter seems so logical to me. Especially after seeing a decade of trying the former.

With all the roster moves, several people have or will be Dfa’d. The waiver wire is where Perry really shines. Turning this squad into a contender is not over!
