Sunday Postgame

Today we got Jose Soriano. Will it be good Soriano? How burned up was the bullpen for today?

Inning 1

Zach Neto flied out deeply to Brandon Marsh to lead off the game after the approximately 45 minute rain delay. Nolan Schanuel then fouled a ball off of himself. He was apparently OK. Later in the at bat, he was hit by a pitch on the left forearm. That was a rough at bat.

Then we got our first strikeTroutTM of the game. Taylor Ward got a two out walk. Jo Adell also struck out.

Nolan Schanuel left the game to be replaced by LaMonte Wade Jr. He had a wrist contusion. Trey Turner struck out to lead off th3e Phillies first. Kyle Schwarber singled on a liner to right. Bryce Harper reached on a fielder’s choice while Luis Rengifo was busy throwing wildly out into left field for his first error of the game. The Phillies had men at first and third with one out. Luckily Nick Castellanos grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Inning 2

Jorge Soler grounded out. Logan O’Hoppe singled on a liner to left and Luis Rengifo did the same. Kevin Newman lined a single into left to load the bases thanks to some timid base running by Logan O’Hoppe. Zach Neto decided to mix things up by singling to right field this time. Logan O’Hoppe scored to make it 1-0 Angels.

Mike Trout got an RBI walk. 2-0 Angels.

Taylor Ward doubled to left to make it 5-0 Angels. Jo Adell grounded out to end the top of the second.

Brandon Marsh singled through to left field. Otto Kemp grounded out. So did Max Kepler. Rafael Marchan singled through the middle to make it 5-1 Angels. Bryson Stott walked. Trea Turner grounded out to first.

Inning 3

Jorge Soler walked. Logan O’Hoppe was out on a fly ball. Luis Rengifo reached on an error. Kevin Newman then hit into a double play to bring up the Phillies. Kyle Schwarber struck out. Bryce Harper grounded out to short and Nick Castellanos grounded out to third. This was a pretty dull inning.

Inning 4

Zach Neto singled past Trea Turner to start this inning. LaMonte Wade Jr. also singled and Neto went first to third. Mike Trout hit a sacrifice fly to score Neto. 6-1 Angels.

Taylor Ward struck out looking. Jo Adell did the same.

Brandon Marsh grounded out. Otto Kemp singled to right but was out on a force out. Rafael Marchan grounded out to end the inning.

Inning 5

Jorge Soler punched one through to left field for a hit. Logan O’Hoppe lined out sharply to right field. Luis Rengifo walked to bring up Newman with two men on and one out. He lined out to center field. Zach Neto grounded into a force out to end the top of the fifth inning.

Bryson Stott grounded out but Trea Turner singled through to right field. Kyle Schwarber struck out swinging. Bryce Harper also struck out.

Inning 6

LaMonte Wade Jr. hit one into the second deck to make it 7-1.

Mike Trout singled on a grounder to center. Taylor Ward struck out. Jo Adell struck out. Jorge Soler singled and Mike Trout was called out going first to third. Upon replay, Trout was ruled safe.

Logan O’Hoppe walked, driving Jorge Soler to second. Luis Rengifo hit into a 6-3 groundout to leave three LOBsters.

Nick Castellanos and Brandon Marsh both grounded out. Otto Kemp homered to make it 7-2 Angels. Max Kepler struck out.

Inning 7

Kevin Newman reached on the second fielding error by Otto Kemp. Neto reached on a fielder’s choice. Neto then stole a bag (sliding feet first). Mike Trout was out on a pop up to second. Taylor Ward doubled again. This time he only got one RBI. 8-2 Angels.

Jo Adell flied out to center to end the top of the seventh inning.

Rafael Marchan grounded out but Bryson Stott walked. Trea Turner grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Inning 8

Jorge Soler popped out to first. Logan O’Hoppe lined out to center field. Luis Rengifo flied out to Brandon Marsh. Gustavo Campero came in to replace Jorge Soler and Brock Burke came in to replace Jose Soriano. The Phillies went three up three down.

Inning 9

After Newman and Neto ground outs, LaMonte Wade Jr. singled to bring up Mike Trout, who grounded out to short. After Carson Fulmer replaced Brock Rurke, Brandon Marsh grounded out to second. Otto Kemp grounded out as did Max Kepler. The Angels won 8-2 and took the series from the first place Phillies!

This team, much like teams from earlier in this century, before 2010-sans 2014-15- has grit. I’m so used to the team folding and not being able to come back in a series. In the old days (since 2010ish), had the Halos won the first game and lost the second game, you knew that the other/better team was going to take the series, every single time. Though I am not watching the games, I am reading here and watching Lameday. Time after time they are fighting back and winning series when they are tied 1-1.

Well, that extra 254 Millionz (Plus deferrals) just doesn’t buy what it used to when it comes to payroll. Gonna need to trade for another 30M worth of talent if they want to be sure they can buy a title this year.

In other good news, the boys in blue in the Ravine got their arses

Got to hear most of this on the way back from Phoenix, went for Ketel Marte Bobblehead Night at Chase Field, good game. Fun to listen to the Phillies broadcast on SiriusXM. They weren’t happy.

I haven’t liked Montgomery’s decisions, or strategies at all times, but it’s nice to hear a manager talk like this, even if it may just be lip service:

“Every game now matters,” Montgomery said. “Every series matters. And when you play a team like that, you get a taste of what it’s going to be like later in the season.”

Was day drankng — bottomless mimosas brunch with the wife — but I was still checking the score. Happy Wardy is keeping the Illadelph hot streak alive. Peaking at the right time… now trade his ass pronto. Seeds of something good starting to blossom.

They are 49-50 this year.

Our last 60 games, we are 33-27. Pretty good.

if we do that in the last 63, we will end up with 85 wins and miss the playoffs.

I predicted 86 wins and WC berth before the season.

I feel on target with 86, just not sure if that’s enough to sneak in the postseason

Definitely don’t trade him for nothing. BUT the proverbial iron is hot! Great position for the team to be in IMO.

Exactly. No need to trade him for a bag of balls. But if some team dangles two 50 grade position prospects for him, well shit, trade the guy.

But I’m in favor of trading anyone if we can fetch a return.

I do not think Ward will be part of a future contending Angels team. He’s only getting older, and he is streaky. Trade him at his current max value.

They have not won a Sunday game at home since April 20th vs the Giants.

16-15-1 in series if I counted correctly. On run differential they’ve out played their totals but this suggests that they should be a game or two above .500. Unfortunately they were swept a few times. They have up go 39-24 to sniff a chance at the playoffs, not likely but I think they end 79-83 or 80-82 if they stand pat at the deadline. Unfortunately if Schanuel is broken, that hurts. Moore is out until at least August according to the radio broadcast. Soriano has to hold up.

Perry will tell us they had a 15 game improvement and “headed in the right direction”. For Perry, a 75-win season will make him happy.

The Angels are also with the 7th hardest remaining schedule with only 6 games from now though August against a team with a losing record.

Oh, and faces 4 Division leaders in the Dodgers, Cubs, Tigers, and Trashos.

Buy, sell, or stand pat, August is going to be brutal.

Angels have won series at LAD, at Philly, at NYY, at Boston, at STL. The team is no pushover but unfortunately nobody on the team is going nuclear. An optimist would say that Neto, Soler, Rengifo, O’Hoppe and Ward are due all due for a sizzling 2 week period and of they all landed together they could make a nice 8-2 stretch that would get within a game of the WC of even the 3rd slot.

I’m currently in the Dominican Republic and caught part of today’s game at a random bar. It was on because Soriano is from the DR.

We have a decent 1-2 with Soriano & The Kuch.

Trout only went 1-4 but, he’s on top of it. He’s not getting blown away by the fastball, which is something I feared
in recent years.

It seems fairly obvious now that his various injuries hurt his timing more so than him being physically unable to catch up to fastballs. My 2 cents at least.

Yet hes going up to the plate hunting for a walk. he was never like that before its kind of sad.

I also think His long time philosophy of taking the first pitch should also be junked . hell get much better opportunities to hit if he is more aggressive early in the count.

I understand. Particularly on the 1st pitch meatballs that he takes.

If he’s now a DH that bats .280 with a .380 OBP, so be it, so long as he’s available for 500+ at bats.

Expectations must be tempered at this juncture.

Not sure that Trout is to that point yet. Granted, it’s only 16 games now, but for July Trout is hitting .281/.432/.561 with 4 doubles and 4 home runs out of his 16 hits. Maybe this is Trout’s season peak, and he swoons over the last 2 months, but I still see a bat that will hit 30+ home runs. And if he takes a walk every now and then instead of always swinging for the fences, so much the better.

BannedInLA

He’s been, roughly speaking, a .280 hitter since returning from the. DL on May 30th.

.280 is the new .300 in today’s era of crappy batting averages.

Trout’s stupid “I jump in the air and twittle my feet, pat my head, then caress the shaft of the bat and start walking towards 1B. Clearly I got a walk right?” move is getting kind of pathetic. It’s so predictable that when he does it I am both sure that umps have seen it on video a couple dozen times and are inclined to ring him up for it and generally you can be sure it was a strike anyway and he bottled it.

I’m really glad he is doing well. It’s a relief. But pitchers don’t fear him anymore than they do a guy like Castellanos or Semein now. That’s good, but not GOOD. They sequence him like a guy they know they can strike out and…. they are often right. And the stupid little dance or the quizzical gazing off into the CF distance like he’s never experienced having a pitch blown by him before…. that whole act is kind of sad.

Thing is, I bet he gets better. He’s got a ton of skill, and you can see he’s more into hitting than slugging lately too. I think if he sticks with that we could see his BA up to .280 by the end of the year with a high 800s or a 900 OPS. What does he have? 6 doubles? He’ll still get better I bet.

Not being facetious but I don’t understand the question. There is no chance of WC so not understanding the buy/sell “difference”. If there are no changes this trade session then this team won’t make a WC for another 5 years (at least 3 years).
The main issue is still revenue generation, imho. MLB needs a revenue plan now so teams can plan after 2027.

No worries.

The question is basically: If we are in the mix, the team may not sell but they’re fun to watch.

The alternative scenario is that we suck ass but, trade players and “build” for the future.

More of a philosophical question. I’m partying down here so bare with me. Haha

What makes you think that would improve our organization?
BTW what’s stopping THE OLD RICH GUY from inviting and recruiting other investors into the fold? ANSWER IS POWER AND DECISION MAKING AUTHORITY. Heck he could probably recruit another $1B worth of investors (we’re a big market team after all….RIGHT?) BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT HE DOESN’T WANT……..

I said it months ago. Even if we are looking this good come July the org is still crap. The core isn’t going anywhere even if they catch a case of the sads this August. If you can get position players prospects for any of our guys with less than a year or two of team control do it.

The fact that the team looks so good now makes me even more determined. Finish the build.

I always want the team to win. If that means we have hope, and maybe don’t sell Kenley (who seems to love playing here) or Ward (who has another year of control), I am ok with that.

Who knows what we might get in return, but unless things fall into our lap we can’t count on someone else’s cast off prospects to significantly help in the future.

Except for the fact that they’ve been swept by 6 teams this year (Toronto, Yankees, Jerry’s Boys, Tigers, Twins and Rangers}. None of their SP’s has a winning record, in fact they all have 6 losses or more. Their bullpen is Kenley Jansen and……..?. The whole lineup sucks except for Neto and Ward. They’re are either playing OVER THEIR HEADS OR ABOUT RIGHT AT THEIR LEVEL THUS FAR.

Its happened more than just randomly this season Toots in addition to those series they have also put-up stellar series performances against “better teams” by

winning 2 out 3 in St Louis
Winning 2 out 3 at home vs the Guardindians
winning 2 out of 3 in Tampa Bay
Winning 2 out 3 at home vs the Giants
Winning 2 out 3 at home vs the Blue Jays
Winning 2 out 3 at home vs the Mermen
Wining 5 out of the 6 games played against the Chowds
Taking 3 out 4 from the Yankees in the Bronx
Winning 2 out 3 from the Braves in Atlanta

This team has ALOT of flaws and lays too many eggs against shitty & struggling teams Pirates, Twins,Marlins,Oriolesx2 & the Nats) but they have shown consistently this year they can compete against ANYONE in the league and its been along time since that has happened even during the Unicorn years.

Hard concur. The notion that we’re a pushover or laughingstock has disappeared because Zach Neto, Nolan Shanuel, Logan O’Hoppe, Jo Adell, Jose Soriano. etc, exist. They are legit building blocks and I think Perry has done enough to demonstrate that he’ll draft a few more foundational pieces.

The future is brighter IMO.

We’ll see, not many people around here happy with the fact that we passed on Kade Anderson last weekend, along with investing on young relievers which is so 2007.
PS……..if I had Zack Wheeler or Tarik Skubal available to nail down a World Series save or Mariano Riviera I’d take Skubal or Wheeler. SP’s and 3 inning relievers are the new way to win in MLB.
