LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Void

Fernando Tatis Jr. is suing to void the deal he signed at 17 to give up 10% of his future earnings in exchange for $2 Million smackers cash on the nail. He says the deal he signed in the Dominican Republic is illegal in California. I wonder if he will also sue his agent and the MLBPA. They are also taking some of his money.

The MRI revealed no structural damage to the shoulder of Zach Neto. He is day to day.

The Toronto Blue Jays acquired right-hander Robinson Pina from the Marlins in exchange for minor league right-hander Colby Martin. The Marlins just lost starter Max Meyer to hip surgery. Genesis Cabrera cleared waivers and has elected free agency. The Twins signed Jose Urena to a minor league deal.

The San Diego Padres just released Jason Heyward. The Blue Jays DFAd Spencer Turnbull.

Diego Segui passed away at the age of 87.

Awesome interview between Jo and MLB Network. Did you know he dealt with epilepsy as a kid? I definitely didn’t.

He’s been easy to root for from the day we drafted him.

Shocked, shocked I tell you!! – no one wants to upgrade the roster for 2025 but Arte is the Boss and maybe wants an upgrade before he goes to Big Billboard in the Sky.

The task is to finish with a better record in the second half than the first half.
The task is not to ‘just let the kids play’.

So seriously, what is one area of the roster or position you would you target to get to 87 wins? Could you even trade a prospect?

Me thinks we need to better at 3B mostly.

Ethan Holliday starting at 3rd for us in October for game 1 of the Wild Card will indeed be wild.

But seriously, we don’t have the farm equity to buy.

I’m usually wrong but I’ll say a pitcher would make the biggest difference. Someone with ERA lower than 4. IOW, a miracle.

Future roster
OF Adell (hopefully this is more him) Rada, somebody
IF Schanuel, Moore, Neto (hopefully his body holds up at SS) , a 3B
C O’Hoppe
DH Trout
Bench: Lugo , Paris (I think) someone good catching.

Man you look at the lineup and it’s coming together but still short a big bat now that Trout’s sun has set. They really need a real impact #3 hitter going forward , someone with an average in the .280s and 35 hr potential. That would solidify the lineup for 4 years.

Here’s the risk: Mike Trout’s first game was July 8, 2011 – almost 14 years ago. In those 14 years, the Angels have failed to obtain (draft, develop, FA sign, or trade) the necessary players to consistently win and make the playoffs.

Yes, we now seem to have a core emerging, but the depth of talent is not in the pipeline today to consistently win and make the playoffs.

My point is that the sense of urgency to build the winner has to be increased. Neto will be a free agent after the 2029 season. O’Hoppe and Adell will be a free agents after the 2028 season.

Getting one MLB player every draft will not achieve the objective. Perry needs to deal a few players at the trade deadline and deepen the prospect pool. In addition, he needs to “win the lottery” in this draft and get two or three major league talents.

Without this, I fail to see how the current strategy will achieve the success we all hope for.

Hence the need to both sell at the deadline and nail this draft. Also, maybe lock up Neto on an extension. His price could be a bit depressed due to his injury history. It is a risk, but one worth taking.

There is no way Neto is day to day. Even the most minor injury or irritation will likely take two weeks and that’s assuming that’s all it is. wouldn’t be surprised when he returns to see him removed rather quickly.

Agree Roy. But with 2 off days sandwiched around the Nats series the Angels are hoping that 6 days of rest will allow him to return for the road trip starting into Atlanta on Tuesday.

I think thats Wishful thinking so get ready for a lost Christmas with the return of either KKKKingery or Daddy Newman manning a blackhole at Shortstop this weekend before the Angels finally realizing Neto has to go on the IL

It’s a dark day in the MLB, as Dick Lovelady has been DFAed again. We all miss him already.

Remember how Arte failing to pay just a couple million more dollars to Jason Heyward was a clear early indicator that he just wanted to collect his millions from stupid fans and had zero interest in commitmunk to whining? Even if we have a top ten payroll? I do.

Man I wish we’d beat the Cubs out for that guy. Everything would be totally different.

We are 1.5 games out of WC contention, but some areas of concern:

  1. We have four teams trailing within two games of us, only two of those teams we play with regularity the rest of the season
  2. I fear Arte will sell a farm asset to BUY at the deadline based on WC “Contention”
  3. I propose that if we continue in WC “Contention” we sell Jensen at the deadline and slide Zefferjahn/Strickland/Detmers to 7/8/9 inning guys. IF Stephenson returns soon, sell Jensen as we’ll have another late inning arm back. A Jensen trade can help build the future.
  4. Arte Moreno does not approve of this message

I dunno. I am curious to see if the FO gets to trade guys in July.

Look at it this way. The team’s gonna need to stay very hot for a long time to sell the idea of “going for it”. The FO is already succeeding. The team has obviously taken a step forward. But I am sure they have had plenty of meetings where they discuss the huge holes the team has and how bad the farm is and how it will impact Arte’s wallet. Also, they have likely discussed how fans have taken to Neto and O’Hoppe and how Arte will likely need to spend on them to keep that happy train rolling.

I doubt the conclusion was “just wait till Rendons off the books in a year and a half and all our problems are solved”.

I doubt VERY HOT happens. There are 8 teams at .500 now in the AL. As I see it the Guardians, Rangers, Royals and Twins can all take us in an 80 game season. The Red Sox too if they get any pitching and defense. I think if we slip a little, just become normal or even cool off a bit before the deadline, any thought of “we should go for it!” will wither.

It’s already a boon season. Team’s moving the right direction. Attendance is up. Unless the Angels are IN A WILD CARD SPOT come the deadline I think they deal. If anyone wants our players.

But we’ll have to see. I know people here are gonna be gobsmacked that no one wants to give us a top 5 prospect for any of our players, and may not want to give us anything for a guy like Anderson. And if the Angels take an absolute “we’re in it to win it” stance without being solidly in the play offs I’ll think it’s pretty likely that Arte has spoken.

JackFrost

Not sure why you think the “Guardians, Rangers, Royals, and Twins can ALL take us in an 80 (do you mean 162 ?) game season.” That has yet to be determined. I mean, which of those teams have swept the Dodgers (who are clearly the best team in baseball)? Which have taken 3 of 4 from the Yankees ?

Alot of people on this site are downgrading the Angels chances to compete for the playoffs late into the season. I would agree that there are weaknesses in the team, however, there are ALSO weaknesses in those teams you mentioned. For example, for most of the season Texas has not been a good hitting team, and frankly have been just plain bad. See Adolis Garcia and Corey Seager massive underperform… So, I don’t by any means think it is a hopeless as you and many others here seem to believe.

The main reason I say that is that some of our issues have built in solutions already in-house, such as replacing Hendricks with Detmers in the starting rotation…

I don’t think this team has played their best baseball over a 30 day period yet. And I think that very well could happen. That will largely depend upon getting key pieces back from injury, such as Moncada and Stephenson for the pen (which would free up Detmers to slide into the rotation which largely addresses the weakness of depth in the starting rotation).

As we know, every season is different. Even with talent, injuries and other problems can rank a season. See Orioles, Baltimore 2025.

I think figuring out if Neto is healthy matters. Otherwise, the Halos should see how the next few weeks go and make decisions accordingly. If they can hang in and maybe make the playoffs, that’s worth doing. They already have Joyce out for 2025. They have minimal OF options, unless Trout can play OF and/or Soler comes back healthy. So trades of Ward or Jansen will have serious repercussions. If Trout can play OF, O’Hoppe can DH and there may be some flexibility. Ideally, Soler could come back, look healthy and be traded. He’s the one piece that doesn’t leave a mark if taken out.

Everyone likes quality prospects and a future. But winning now helps also IMHO.

The best thing in these numbers is the difference between BA and OBP. He’s walking just a little more, which means he chasing less, which means he recognizing pitches better, which means he’s barreling the ball more often.

A lot of folks don’t get that walking isn’t about the walks. It’s what walking more tells you about a guys approach.

Adell looks much better this year and if it can hold up for another month – even at 75% of this production he will likely have crossed a line in development that he won’t go back across.

I love his athleticism and sure hope he has taken that step.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yup. Just keep walking some and hit .266. I loaf the 10 HR month, but if he hits like this and only has 5 HR in July and August I will still be stoked. His defense is also not bad now in CF and RF. He’s hit his WAR from last year at this point. If he stays solid he will likely crack 2 WAR, maybe 2.5.

He’s arb eligible next year. FA in 2028. Looking more like a guy we need to keep but the jury I still out.

One thing I dig about Jo/Zack/Logan/Nolan is that, for the first time in a long time, the vibe on the team is really good. I can tell because I kinda want a jersey of one of those guys down the line and I haven’t wanted and Angels jersey in forever.

Playoffs 2025!

40-and-40 sounds biblical enough to me. Where to beef up?

Law says this morning the only bat in the draft that might contribute in 2025 is Irish, and the only pitcher we could feasibly use is Arnold (due to his smoother mechanics and lower usage in 2025), the others were used more.

Out of all the names on the trade deadline availability, I like McMahon as best fit and need (3B).
https://www.si.com/mlb/yankees/news/new-york-yankees-landing-spot-rockies-ryan-mcmahon-again

Do it. Klassen and Rada go back to the Rockies. CtPG explodes but it just may work. It allows Arquette/Ethan time to develop, and if it’s not one of them, 3B will be even a higher need. Analysts say Rada is Juan Pierre and Klassen is still a AA pitcher with a high ERA.

Just Look at McMahon’s career Home/Away splits:

Home .265/.344/.476
Away. .216/.302/.363

Its even worse this year ( OPS .895 vs .583)

I definitely don’t think the team should be a buyer at the deadline. No more Giolito’s please. As was said at the start of the season, the best strategy is to flip contracts to playoff contenders. I’m not expecting a Luis Garcia level return, but Jansen and Ward should fetch some talent.

There are 29 more games before the trading deadline, against the likes of Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York Mets, Seattle and Texas. If the Angels are still within striking range of the WC at that point, then I’d agree with you. But if they are no better than a .500 team, then I’d say trade to continue improving the club in the future.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Honestly, those 29 games will pretty much tell the tale. If we are legitimately in the hunt, not at .425 and “just a few out”, then I’d at least understand if the FO said they want to give the current roster a shot. Those series will show us if we are legit or not. If we win a lot of those games we would be in a pretty solid position.

I’d still make trades. But I’d at least understand why Perry doesn’t.

unless they have an insanely good record in the next 30 games, they shouldn’t buy. If they’re still in the WC hunt, I don’t think they should sell either. I could envision a scenario where trading Rengifo, Anderson, Jansen, or Hendricks makes sense even if they’re still on the fringes of the WC race. I don’t really think they should trade Ward unless they’re completely out (which is possible).

I’d say we could sell Ward & Jensen and replace them respectively with Lugo & Detmers-Or at least Jensen. Jensen will bring in a nice haul. Ward has increased his trade value.

McMahon was an All-Star in 2024, and this season, he’s hitting .225 with 12 home runs and 25 RBIs. The 30-year-old is also a solid defender.

OBP. SLG. OPS. OPS+
.324. .404. .728. 95

Other than empty homeruns….which we have Trout and Ward to supply, I’m just not feeling it. Furthermore, the Yankees are supposedly interested in this guy and have better prospects to choose from.

I’m in the let 2025 happen as is and continue to invest in the future by selling assets to the highest bidder.

I’d trade Rada and Klassen if it really solved 3B. McMahon is the issue here. He doesn’t have a 100 OPS+ in Colorado. He’s 30 already and signed for 2 more years. I wouldn’t want to sign him longer. He is a good defensive 3B.

But really, he’s a lower contact Alberto Callaspo for two seasons. Not a long term fix.

I happened to leave on the Angels MLB channel after the game yesterday to wear Angels Talk came on and the hopium level was at fever pitch. This season, to this point is a nice story with some growth but projecting this team for the playoffs is nonsense. They have been really fortunate with the health their starting pitching and still are just .500. This team is very prone to up and downs like most young teams are and we should just see how it plays out.

Yup. So much more has gone right for these guys than wrong this year so far. It’s just not an indicator that the team’s close to squaring off with the Tigers and Yankees in October. Not at all. Even the hated Astros. YEAH! We beat em some. They don’t have Alvarez. All their pitchers are hurt. Walker has been cold as hell. At full strength both the Astros and Rangers man handle us.

Good job thus far Angels. Good building. But we’re still half done.

RIP Diego Sequi. As the article says, he was a member of the Seattle Pilots and Mariners.

He was the starting pitcher on opening day 1977 (the M’s first game) against the Angels. The Angels won that game 7-0 behind Frank Tanana. Tanana went the distance giving up 9 hits. This was my second season as a fan of the Angels and with Rudi, Baylor, and Grich in the lineup, I had high expectations.

Former Angels Dave Collins and Leroy Stanton started for the M’s.

Yep, I think he hurt his arm in the 1977 season but kept pitching. In 1978, his K rate per 9 innings dropped to 5.2 whereas between 1975 and 1977 it was 9.4, 8.1, and 7.6.

Greedy and inept Angel’s Managers ruined his arm. His innings pitched and just how quickly they ramped him up are pretty eye opening. Ryan’s durability was part DNA oddity and part Bill Singer “Yoga” stretching along with Jimmy Reese’s guidance on conditioning.

We used to sneak into the Big A in the 70s but had to get there before the employees so we were there at 2PM for a night game. We would peak out from our hiding spot and would watch as Ryan ran every step in that stadium.
