LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Player Poll

Which teams and which managers do the players want to play for? Which do they not want to play for? Spoiler alert! The Angels organization got crapped on pretty bad. Ron Washington fared somewhat better.

The Red Sox acquired right-hander Jorge Alcala from the Twins. Jackson Jobe is having Tommy John surgery. Left-hander Shane McClanahan is seeking second opinions about the nerve issue in his triceps. His rehab is on pause. The Dodgers are moving right-hander Ben Casparius to their starting rotation. They are running out of pitchers.

Here we go – 10 tough games vs Orioles (3), Yankees (4), and Houston (3).

For today:
In 13 games against the Angels, Charlie Morton is 5-2, 3.60 ERA, and 63 Ks. For the season, he’s 2-7, 6.59 ERA.

Kochanowicz has faced the Orioles one time, earlier this year – giving up 1 run in 5-2/3 innings and getting the win. For the season, he’s 3-7, 5.61 ERA

Hoping for a win!

I think it will take a miracle for us to go 6-4. More likely, we go 3-7 or (god forbid) 1-9. Yikes!!

Rengifo gave us 6.3 WAR from 2022-24.

It’s a shame how this season has gone, but at least it allowed a clear path for CMo.

In 2025, Renfigo is the 2nd toughest guy to strikeout on the team after Schanuel. Has to be appreciated with all the hackers the team has. I’m not defending his early performance but he is more of a second half player. Last year, injuries took him out in the post-AS break. I’m all for trading him or stick him at 3rd and move Moncada.

Yes We really need another left handed hitter and Wade plays the corner outfield spots too . And after watching multiple innings of Soler and Ward flail at the plate and in the field I have to believe Late Night La Monte will be an upgrade especially against tough righties.

Actually what killed us here was losing Chris Taylor to the IL he was so versatile to backup short, 2B & Centerfield and is a much better hitter than Kingery.

Bachman has been a large disappointment to me, has not logged too many innings since he was on the big club in 2023. So I don’t think he has had a long enough run to progress. In 2025, only a total of 13.1 innings (with 10 BBs mind you). Of course, Perry likes making headlines. Here’s Sammy…

We should expect more of the same. Hard throwing FB, slider mix with an inability to command the strike zone. A manageable ERA but WHIP will remain high. Flash some brilliance but will not be consistent. I suppose he fits right in.

3 of those walks came in his 4th outing back but he still retire the side without giving up a run.

I’ve seen him pitch several times on TV and he’s been around the zone in each outing. My biggest concern is that he hasn’t pitched in back to back games yet although he did go 2 innings in his last outing.

Let’s collapse now. Then have our trade bait play well for a couple weeks. Then trade them. That’s a win for me.

Tyler would not be happy going back there — they treated him badly at the end of his stint there. Moreover, there is no way in hell Arte lets Perry help the Doyers get better…. especially when we are now competing in our division AND in the Wild Card.

Yep.
Look how well Canning is doing with the Mets: 6-2 record, 3.22 ERA

With the Angels, his lowest ERA was 3.99 (but that was in Covid year, and he had just 11 games).
Outside of that, his lowest ERA was 4.32 (went 7-8, pitched 24 games in 2023).

So, here’s hoping we can get a good haul for Ward. Move him now, before it’s too late.

Since his outing vs the Cubs he’s reverted back to the Canning we know so well. Good start followed by a few mediocre one.

Yet Canning’s WHIP , K/9, BB/9 were all better with the Angels in 2023 than they are this year so far with the Mets. the biggest is they have cut down on his HR/9 and he is generating more ground balls. But as I have shown here earlier he also averaging less innings and pitches per start than that 2023 season. Time will tell with him In his last 5 starts ( including the stellar pitching performance 2 starts ago against the Doyers Canning has a 4.84 ERA, a 1.61 WHIP , only a 1.58 K/BB while his HR/9 is much closer to his career average of 1.6 HR/9.

So it maybe a little premature to declare Griff completely out of the clutches of Evil Arte’s empire

Zach Neto
.281 / .318 / .503
127 OPS+
10 HRs
12 doubles
11 SBs (11/15)
2.6 WAR

Nolan Schanuel
.284 / .380 / .389
118 OPS+
13 doubles
13% K rate vs. 12.6% BB rate
0.9 WAR

Jo Adell
.223 / .296 / .473
113 OPS+
13 HRs (6 in 10 games in June)
24.6% K rate
0.4 WAR

Logan O’Hoppe
.236 / .268 / .457
100 OPS+
14 HRs
33.5% K rate
0 WAR

Neto is a star. Schanuel is a hitting savant. And most importantly, Jo Adell has arrived! I have real concerns about O’Hoppe, but for the sake of staying positive I’ll keep him included in the Core 4. Then supplement them with CMo and Rada in the next year or 2.

C – O’Hoppe
1B – Schanuel
2B – Moore
SS – Neto
3B –
OF – Adell
OF – Rada
OF –
DH – Trout

I’m leaning towards taking Avia Arquette at #2 and plugging him in as our franchise 3B.

Did I mention Jo Adell? Since 5/6:

Well, it is both an exciting time and a precarious time for Angels baseball, and especially for being an Angels fan.

With the win over the A’s yesterday we pushed our division record to 10-8 on the season. On the surface it does not sound that great, but considering the fact we started 1-7 it is pretty impressive. It means we have gone a combined 9-1 vs the Mariners and A’s in our last 10 divisional games.

For perspective at this time last year we were 5-7 in divisional games. But it gets tougher in the next two plus weeks. Alot tougher.

This is why I say it is both an exciting and precarious time. While it is great to actually look at the MLB scoreboard on a daily basis and know most of these AL games are meaningful for us in one way or another, (scoreboard watching and rooting against divisional foes in a tight race is one of the great joys of being a baseball fan ) as Angels fans we know all to well that the next gigantic Buttercup is waiting for us right around the corner.

It is TrAdition.

Think back to Shohei’s final season here in 2023. We went into August a healthy 5 games over .500 with a reinforced bullpen and playoff dreams in our collective heads. Then the Buttercup came. It was in the form of a devastating 4 game sweep at home no less and at the hands of the hated Mariners.

It started on Thursday August 3rd when we went to the 9th with a 3-1 lead and our reliable closer Charlie Sheen with the ball in his hand. But we had forgotten about TrAdition. Estevez surrendered a heartbreaking Grand Slam to a nobody named Marlowe. And that was the beginning of the end of our playoff dreams and perhaps retaining Ohtani longterm. The 9th inning was a hammer blow that massively moved momentum against us, and we went meekly away losing the next three games.

So, like most of you I am sure, I am enjoying the current stretch with a mixture of happy surprise and trepidation.

The suddenly resurgent Orioles are on deck and they have been blistering the ball lately, scoring an average of just over 5 runs per game in their last five games. We then face off against a powerhouse Yankees squad which just swept us at the Big A. But this time we are in New York. Seeing the Angels go 2-5 or even 1-6 in this seven game road trip is not out of the realm of possibility, especially if the Orioles managed to sweep us. Things like that happen, especially on the back of tough losses, like say if Kenley blows his first save by given up a three run jack to Rutschman or Holliday on Friday night.

We THEN come home to face a really tough Houston team with dominant pitching. We can see that they are taking that matchup seriously because they totally revamped their rotation in order to get their best starter Hunter Brown going against us in the very important first game (sets the tone for the whole series). Originally they had probably their weakest starter McCullers set to face off against Kikuchi, but no more.

Just like the Rangers did to us in mid April they pushed their top starter in the slot of the opening game of the series. In the case of Texas it was Mahle who shut us down and set the ball rolling downhill for us into being swept.

It is these kinds of strategic moves that OTHER teams make that we don’t that usually separate them from us. We may even have more talent, but the strategic part and the details are where we get beat… So what is our next move Perry ? What is your next move Wash ??

Just around the corner the Astros have Hunter Brown (1.82 ERA ) and then Brandon Walter ( 1.64 ERA ) waiting for you in the first two games, hoping to grab the all important momentum in that huge series, and perhaps even sweep us like the hated Mariners did in August of 2023.

I don’t have any trepidation at all. I enjoy myself when they win. Huzzah. They are not a very good team though, so I know they will lose same games fairly often. It doesn’t even matter who they are playing. When they are on, they beat the Doyers. More often, they are the type of team that struggles against the Orioles and Marlins

The next few weeks aren’t any tougher than the last few. You most likely would have made the exact same donkey noises if we’d had a hot streak 5 weeks ago.

Baltimore
Yankees
Houston
Red Sox
Nationals
Braves

If lot’s of things go right, we will be around .500 for this pile of games. Will they? Probably not. It’s not a good team, but it’s the team I watch. The Yankees will likely hurt us. Houston always beats on us. The other series are a matter of who has pitching on any given night…. and there’s a solid chance it will not be us. Shrug.

Do I need someone to make sure I’m not getting too excited and having too much fun right now? Hell no. I don’t. Am I gob smacked that all this braying boils down to “Wash so stupid, Perry SO STUPID.”? Nope.

In the end, while the kids are showing improvement and wins are fun, this team/org are not ready for post season competition yet. Not even close. I actually WISH for trades that will likely mean we lose more games this year. But I do appreciate that, when the current roster clicks under the apparently ham fisted mangling of our manager who so much dumber than CoachDad, they manage to make me enjoy watching for a week or so here and there.

Erstad with the catch

Apparently Aaron Civale of the Brewers isn’t happy about being demoted to the pen and has demanded a trade.

Perry should offer Rengifo for Civale.

We get an average starter to upgrade the rotation.

Brewers get rid of a potential problem in the clubhouse, they save some salary, and get the potential upside of Rengifo.

Win-win.

Everyone’s hands are dirty in the Skaggs situation. Maybe if those closest to him (teammates, friends, employer, and family) fought for his health as much as they are fighting for legal relief, this might have been prevented.

He’s still dead, and nothing will change that, and that’s ultimately the most difficult aspect of this story.

It reminds me of when (AND I’M NOT GETTING POLITICAL HERE, SO DON’T EXPAND ON THIS) a judge or executive branch guy does something in ONE INSTANCE and I think “Holy crap. If you do that it can be applied 12 different ways to 100 different things down the line! Why are you opening that up?” Even when, in the initial instance, I’m sort of in favor of it.

Does ANYONE want to have to be held responsible for being around a junky who kills himself? Because that’s where this shit is heading. Gold diggers will sue management who will then need to “take steps” which will likely lead to rat rules, poorer people getting sued, maybe some sweet mandatory testing, insurance hikes, people who had a record of drug use in the past being far less hireable….

Sounds great.

Junky is gonna junky. And for a lot of them that means get dead. It’s not the rest of the world’s fault. Death is justice if you do things that can kill you. A judge should just toss this crap.

Here’s a nice write-up on Reid:

Five years later: Here’s each team’s best Draft pick from 2020

Angels: Reid Detmers, LHP

The best college lefty in the 2020 Draft class, Detmers went in the first round to the Angels and made his big league debut in August of his first full season. A mainstay in Los Angeles’ rotation in 2022 and 2023, he split the 2024 season between Triple-A Salt Lake and the big leagues. He’s moved into the bullpen this year and started off slowly, though he’s possibly turned a corner with five shutout innings in June. He’s amassed 3.3 career WAR to date with a 9.8 K/9 rate.

I’m glad Reid has been playing well of late. He is certainly an intriguing case. Most people feel his stuff is too electric to be limited to 20 pitches or so in a game. But maybe the fact that he is limited to such pitch count is what’s making him unhittable right now. So maybe unless something else comes up, leave him as a high-leverage reliever for now. He relishes the fact that he comes in close games and shuts down the other team. No need to mess with what’s working right now.

Angelz4ever

As I said on the other page, Detmers is channeling Bobby Thigpen. He looks to be able to close a game when needed and maybe be THAT guy later.

Would be great if we could get a good trade for Jansen, then move Detmers to being the closer. At least for this year.
Can decide on Detmers starting in 2026.

We will get something significant in return for Jensen, even if the trading team wants him as a set-up man.

That players survey was interesting to read, thanks for linking. I guess it is nothing we didn’t already feel we knew, but I feel it’s a sadly important data point.

Reminds me of those who like to say a new owner COULD be worse. That may be true, but it appears the odds are at least in our favor.

You also miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

I can buy that argument if it was 2017 and Arte had some recent hits or something but we’re a decade into this garbage. If you’re afraid of a new owner in 2025 you just have stockholm syndrome and probably shouldnt drive a car or eat sushi either because the world is scary.

That’s my point though. Everyone is afraid of this so-called new owner because WHAT IF he’s worse than Arte. That’s why I said no one would really know unless someone pulls the trigger.

I’m not sure things can get worse. I’m also not sure who is afraid of a new owner. But I’m also damn sure that the current owner blows and there are 1000 ways that a new owner/group can screw things up in their own special way. Both cats are alive in the box. Nothing wrong with giving it a shot, but I’m not expecting magic.

I was surprised that the Tigers and Mariners are where they are. Same with the Cardinals. EVERYONE wanted to be a Cardinal most of my life. I think a lot of this list has to do with winning. The Pirates would be last otherwise, but they have more hope than the teams below them. Cause of this, again, a little surprised where the Padres are….

Its just a reminder that this isn’t an imagined or intentionally-negative fan mental complex or something. The team was perceived well when they were winning, yes, but that happened to coincide with an era of baseball that was juuuust starting to embrace analytics deeply and our old-school coaching and organizational structure didn’t matter as much as it does now.

What we’ve seen is 10 years of a very similar consistent critique from players, ex-players, ex-employees, insiders who talk to scouts etc. and it all seems to come back to the executive level of the business being very slow to adapt to the changes the industry has made.

You can see the critiques of the Rockies here and its basically that they’ve never adjusted or adapted, they just run it back every year and the team is eroding in every way. We aren’t on that level but we are suffering from a similar issue. The things Arte maybe didn’t need to invest in in 2005 are important to spend money on now with today’s generation of players and competing franchises. We just got pitching and hitting labs in Arizona – yay! — but its like buying stock way after it already popped. We aren’t winning because we are lead by people who are reactive and not proactive. There is no innovation or fire burning to figure out the puzzle. Its just a lot wanting to do what worked in 2005 and being confused that it doesn’t.

Washington was at the bottom of the “want to play for” and near the top of the “don’t want to play for” lists.

One player comment who didn’t want to play for Washington: “…because I want to use my cellphone”. Clearly spoken by a millennial.

As for the Angels, no surprises – it’s what CtPG regulars have known for 10+ years: “They just don’t know what they’re doing top to bottom. That’s what I’ve heard.”

In spite of it all, the yutes are winning.

Not a surprise, and nothing as fans we already don’t know about.

Also supports the fact that the team just can’t sign any FA they want to, when fans complain about why Perry didn’t sign him, or why Perry didn’t throw money at him, or Perry could have had him for this $$, etc. The feeling has to be mutual. These players aren’t robots. If the offer is similar and the choice is between the Angels and say, Giants – probably an easy answer for the player.

But LOL on Washington and his hatred for cellphones.

To put it in starker relief: There were 126 respondents in the poll, and not a single player said the Angels has a reputation as a “good” place to play, and 19 said it was a “bad” place to play. Even Tampa got 10 positive votes, and they play in a minor league park.

Those are pretty serious headwinds when it comes to FA bidding.

Both my daughters ended up following the Kings but have no interest in the Angels.

And so congrats to Kopi on his third Lady Bing this morning! – another sign of an organization to emulate.

Sheesh.

It’s even worse when you think there’s most likely an Angels player in that pool of 126, and that player/s couldn’t even muster enough (fake) enthusiasm for their own team.

That cell phone reply is grandstanding as that was not implemented until ST started. The Halos haven’t contended in ten years and that is because the FO has to contend with the usual baseball business pressure and an owner that falls in love with a shiny top shelf FA and then overpays them for no pay-out.

Frankly, with 4 or 5 teams that break the budget every single year, there’s really no need to listen to the Halos, or other third tier team, when the Yanks, Mets, Doyers, Padres and one or two more teams will annually push piles of cash at players and more than likely make it to the PS.

If the Halos can start winning (2026?) then that player will go ahead and wait to use his cell phone until after he gets dressed after winning games and heading towards a post-season appearance.

It’s probably misleading to say that Washington was at the bottom of the “want to play for list”. He was tied for #10 with AJ Hinch. 14 managers didn’t receive a single vote in their favor , so the chart makes Wash look lower than he actually ranked.

Same for the magnitude of folks saying they wouldn’t want to play for Washington as a manager. Of the 126 players surveyed, only a small minority chose to answer that question (40), and only 4 total had bad feedback for Wash. (Same as the number of folks opining that they’d like to play for him.)

Fun with statistics.

Thanks, your points are accurate.

Anonymous surveys have a multifaceted perspective. On the one hand, they encourage honest feedback by shielding respondents from potential repercussions, which leads to more accurate and valuable data. On the other hand, they can pose challenges in verification and follow-up, and some might misuse them to provide harmful or inaccurate information. That said, it’s a bit humorous that for all the hype, Washington does not seem to be a “players coach”.

I think there’s a fair amount of conflation of the manager and the organization. The separate question that suggests players find the Angels have a bad organizational reputation speaks to that, so that Wash getting a handful of positive votes regardless is notable to me.

The first comment on the survey leader, Bochy, said “A lot of championships” so likelihood of postseason success seems to be a major factor in the responses.

None of the players said “TAXES” or “PISSING AWAY MONEY ON A HIGH COST OF LIVING” as a reason to not want to play in a place. So obviously they aren’t a factor. And clearly we should all expect a flood of good free agents to head to the Reds soon…. the data has spoken.

when I read the article yesterday, my initial conclusion is there are four MLB players who have never met or spoken with Ron Washington.

Why are you trying to dampen my echo chamber? Are you not aware that Arte has devolved into being basically satan? That Perry is stupid? Do we need to tell you again? It would be a shame if you went your whole life not knowing about this. We will save you from your stupidity. Strap in Turks, and we will educate you so that you know the Angels org has been crap for a while now since it seems like maybe you were not aware of it…. which is the same as loving Arte and sitting in a tree kissing him.
