Postgame Loss 5-1

Simeon Woods Richardson versus Yusei Kikuchi today. Two of yesterday’s pitchers are already gone and we have some new faces in the bullpen. You can’t tell the bullpen without a scorecard.

In the first inning Zach Neto got a hit and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Unfortunately, the Angels were unable to drive him in. The Twins were all over Yusei Kikuchi who contributed a wild pitch to the six hits and one walk by the Twins. 3-0 Twins.

In the second inning, Luis Rengifo got a single. The Angels didn’t score. The Twins continued to hit against Kikuchi. He started off his half of the frame with a pitch clock violation. He gave up one more run on two hits. 4-0 Twins.

Zach Neto homered to put the Angels on the board. 4-1 Twins.

The Twins continued to hit and Luis Rengifo contributed one of his patented throwing errors in the third inning. Yusei Kikuchi got his second pitch clock violation to load up the bases with no outs. He was replaced by Ryan Johnson. Johnson retired three in a row to get out of the first inning in which the Twins didn’t actually score. 4-1 Twins.

In the top of the Angels fourth, two Angels struck out and then Nolan Schanuel fouled one straight into his kneecap and left the game unable to walk. J.D. Davis came in and finished striking out for Schanuel. Brutal! They are calling it a right knee contusion.

The bottom of the fourth and all of the fifth inning were scoreless. Reid Detmers came in to replace Johnson on the mound.

In the sixth inning, Zach Neto hit his third hit of the game putting a man on with one out. Woods Richardson was replaced by Brock Stewart. Zach Neto stole second base once again while Mike Trout was batting. Then we saw the second strikeTrout of the game.

Taylor Ward flied out to right to end the top of the sixth. Double doubles in the bottom of the sixth (Ty France and Brooks Lee) made the score 5-1 Twins.

Griffin Jax came in to pitch for the Twins. Let’s hit some Jax! O’Hoppe struck out but J.D. Davis managed a hit to bring him up to a robust .167 average. That’s almost as good as Tim Anderson. Rengifo and Adell struck out. Jose Fermin came in to make his major league debut for the Angels. He walked a guy and then struck out a guy. Buxton popped out and Correa struck out. Not bad, Fermin!

Louis Varland replaced Griffin Jax and retired the Angels in order. Garrett McDaniels returned the favor in the bottom of the Eighth.

Mike Trout flied out to second. Taylor Ward grounded out to short. Logan O’Hoppe grounded out to second. The Angels lost this one 5-1. Zach Neto had a great game. Everybody else not so much.

Some disagreed with me stating it’s still early in the season, but I’m gonna say it again: we got the same Kikuchi from Seattle days. Which is not very good, Like Anderson he signed really fast, knowing he just got lucky (Houston) the prior year.

I don’t think Detmers is “stretched out” to start games but, its time. I’d rather see Silseth or basically anyone else get starts over Hendricks.

Silent C should be allotted more time to hopefully work through it.

I guess they were “finishing” their AB’s when they needed to, lol.

Seriously the most confusing hitting philosophy I have ever heard. Like they have somewhere else to be lol.

Yeah, if I want to finish quickly I just swing three times in succession regardless of where the pitch is. That is the way you “finish” your ABs and at the same time get zero walks in a game.

That somewhere else to be… is bed. Haven’t you heard? They are tired, they were up late the other night. Only thing worse than them facing (Any Pitcher With A Pulse and air in his lungs) is not getting their proper amount of Nite-Nite. These are just kids. Lots under the age of 25, brains require lots of sleep. Otherwise, it’s a loss, after 1 inning.

Why sign mediocre pitcher free agents like Kikuchi and Hendricks?

That’s what happens when you draft 20 pitchers in a single draft and have nothing to show for it.

Bad decisions beget other bad decisions.

Totally agree. I questioned both the Kikuchi and Hendricks signings when they happened. But I was especially displeased with Hendricks. We have kids in the minors I would rather hand the ball to than Kyle Hendricks.

Hendricks can’t be allowed to start that game on May 1st. It is the start of a homestand and you need to get off on the right foot. It is also the start of a new month (May). We can’t afford to give games away like that. And he is going up (or would be) against a tough customer in Mize.

Dana or Klassen needs to be starting that game.

Klassen isn’t ready to start yet. His control is still problematic, despite the Ks. It’s just the state of the rotation that makes fans want to grasp at any prospect once they string two decent starts together. Klassen really needs a couple months of solid development before being rushed to the bigs.

I’d also expect Caden to get rocked a bit when he’s next called up. He’s having more luck with his slider in AAA, but he’s going to need good command of the fastball to get MLB hitters out.

And beyond those two, the farm is really as rough as the MLB club right now. The Pandas in particular are struggling top to bottom.

Well, at least we have some guys that can swing the stick down on the farm….. oh wait, we don’t, that will be address in the 2030’s

At least some of the pitching looks semi decent with a tiny bit of hope.

Let me ask you honestly TT…. if the Angels brought up Klassen tomorrow do you really think he would do any worse than Hendricks? Let’s say it this way; what are the odds he would pitch better than Hendricks? I would think they are pretty high …. I don’t think I am grasping at straws here, I am just fed up.

Kyle Hendricks should not even be on an MLB roster. I mean, his ERA is approaching 7.00 !! He is throwing lolly pops up there and the Angels think they can win a game with that? He hasn’t pitched into the 6th inning in any of his last four starts. Don’t you think Klassen could do that at least ? Frankly, I would take my chances with his lack of control. Unless you think that starting the kid (many, many teams as you know have brought guys up from AA to start games in MLB) will irrevocably damage his fragile, youthful psyche.. Do you think it would damage his fragile, youthful psyche?

Hendricks has had five starts total – and was serviceable in three of them. The first month of baseball is not even complete. Klassen has only had four starts, and in the first two he surrendered 11 runs in roughly five innings total. He hasn’t pitched six innings in a start this season yet.

I think the same short-termism that would argue to promote Klassen from AA after two five inning starts with high K totals is the short-termism that would jettison Hendricks after two poor starts.

I don’t want to fuck up another prospect’s development by rushing him to get shelled in a season that no one is expecting to legitimately contend in. If there’s going to be turnover, I’d rather give those innings to a guy like Detmers, who has seen plenty of major league success. Or if a prospect is to be rushed, stretch out Johnson, whose arsenal is basically what we’ve already seen, and whose command is plus (and was plus in college). He pitched to a 2.21 ERA in NCAA play last year, was durable and had BB/9 and WHIP values that were vanishingly small over 100+ innings.

Klassen is basically a reliever figuring out how to maintain control over six innings, and repeat that over multiple starts. He never had a successful year in college or in the minors until he started putting it together across 93 innings last year.

Fair enough. So it seems you do think it could f_ him up psychologically or in some sort of way…. Personally, I would rather see Detmers used in the bullpen, but not in middle relief. We lack a reliable lefty down there and I think I would rather have him as a high-leverage, late inning guy to face lefties as opposed to a middle reliever, which is sort of wasting him.

What about Dana ? He did already get his feet wet up in the bigs.. from what you’ve seen from him the last few starts in MiLB does he project to be serviceable at this time? You said earlier you thought he would get shelled, and yet I seem to remember a couple good starts recently, and it looks like he has a 2.25 ERA over four games and 19.2 IP at Salt Lake….

It’s not just about harming their confidence – it’s that there will be much less patience at the MLB level to let guys like Klassen and Dana work through things. If one of them surrenders five runs in an inning via walks, wild pitches, and a couple knocks, they’re going to get pulled in the second inning. So what sort of accelerated experience are they actually getting by pitching in a context where they’re over their heads?

Dana had one nice outing in Sacramento (one of the kinder parks to pitchers in the PCL), but otherwise he hasn’t pitched into the sixth in any other outing. In his latest outing he got pulled in the 4th inning after almost 90 pitches.

I’d like to see Dana work on a consistent release point, fastball command, sequencing, and sustained success with the change and curve. He’s making some progress in month one on the change – let’s give him some time to make progress and go deeper into games consistently.

(And in general, it’s worth watching these games on video, and not generalize to forcefully from box scores and game outcomes.)

Of course I understand the point about watching the games instead of simply looking at the boxscore. Unfortunately, I have limited free time and much to do with work etc… Not sure if you somehow make money or a living off of your studies of MiLB, like writing for journals or submitting stuff to Fangraphs etc.. But as stated, there are only so many hours in a day.

Completely a hobby. Got into baseball as a kid through minor league ball and it stuck. I don’t expect others to have the same appetite, and there are honestly times when a video or audio broadcast of a MiLB game has 5-10 concurrent streams at most. Just saying that with prospects in particular, the box score doesn’t always telegraph the onfield action.

The thing about Hendricks is that his stuff limits him significantly. You can call it “short termism” but he is not going to get better. He is what he is. Could he have an occasional decent game? Sure. But the big picture does not look good with him…He is new to the AL so teams are getting a first look at him, or maybe he has been seen in interleague once or twice … but he is not well know. And to that point he has gotten progressively worse after his first two starts..

The writing is on the wall with Hendricks. He doesn’t have the stuff to get Major League hitters out consistently. You can only do it with smoke and mirrors for so long before the game is up. I think it is up for him, and last night was indicative of that.

Why? Lots of teams do that kind of thing. These guys have worked their whole lives to get that chance. It is not like they haven’t also dealt with adversity either… Most are not likely to break even if they had a rough outing… Now, continuing to throw a guy out there who is failing is a different story. I think it is irresponsible to do that… But that is not what we are talking about here.

No they don’t need to start. Dana and or Klassen won’t turn this around and they are not ready for prime time. That is doubling down on stupidity.

Dana is 21 in AAA. When the Angels are sitting home watching the postseason on TV this October, Dana will *still* be 21.

The idea that he needs to be in the MLB *now* is a bit crazy, when he’s younger than most college pitchers who will be drafted this summer. He got shelled last Sept, and struggled in spring. Let him pitch in the PCL for 60-80 innings, and if he’s still coasting, promote him.

It’s been Moreno’s injunction since CJ Wilson – not a dollar spent at the top of the pitching market.

That they’d give three years to Kikuchi, who turns 34 in a month, is bit baffling. Like giving three years to Stephenson after two months of decent performance.

Yet these risky decisions, already with limited upside, will just reinforce Moreno’s prohibition on high level pitching acquisitions.

And how has that worked out for Arte ??

I also wonder about that comment since by all reports the Angels were in the Cole sweepsteaks until the very end … it was them and the Yankees, so I imagine that Arte decided to make an exception in that one case ? Of course he lost to New York in the end, which as we know resulted in the full tilt emotional reaction signing of Anthony Rendon.

Could have given Fried 8-years. Or Burnes at 6-years. A short term contract provided to a pitcher is not the worst thing to happen while the team is developing everyday players. One bad outing by Kikuchi and people are hitting the panic button.
