LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Drama Day

Ronald Acuna Jr. called out Brian Snitker for having a double standard after Jarred Kelenic cadillacked along admiring his “homer” that didn’t clear the fence. Kelenic got thrown out at second. Acuna was benched by Snitker in 2019 for doing something similar. Snitker basically said “That’s different.” Yeah, it was different. Acuna Jr. stayed at first and didn’t get thrown out. We will see whether these guys will be able to bury the hatchet going forward. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was suspended one game after he went straight to social media to complain about the umpire who ejected him from a game. Davey Martinez and Jorge Lopez both got suspended for intentionally throwing at Andrew McCutchen the other day.

The Brewers acquired Cesar Espinal from the Royals as the player to be named later in their Mark Canha trade. Omar Narvaez passed through waivers and elected free agency. The Guardians just DFAd Triston McKenzie. He was good, but now he’s not. The Braves just designated Jose Suarez for assignment. He’s also not good. The Cubs will acquire Drew Pomeranz from the Mariners. I am not sure at this time who or what is going back the other way. The age of Nick Kurtz is upon us.

Luis Arraez is on the concussion IL thanks to his collision at first base over the weekend. Spencer Strider is now on the injured list with a hamstring strain. Not Aragorn!

Kind of a nice fortunate mishap for us on a mistake by the Pirates org. Rotation could have easily been altered to let a guy pitch where he grew up. Skenes went to El Toro in Lake Forest, so literally his backyard. Guess he’ll just have to wait a few years until he signs with us to pitch at the Big A.

This is a case of if he’d just said, “You know, he has a point, I just spaced out in the moment and didn’t pull him because I was busy managing a ball game.” he’d pretty much squash it. Even if someone wanted to bitch more, he could just say “see my previous statement” and there’d be no new shit in the fan.

The truth is that Acuna, who I really enjoy following as payer, also seems like an entitled prick. Thus manager types tend to react negatively to them when they piss them off.

The double standard. Ronald, is that the manager and coaches have to put up with you day in and day out while other players don’t piss them off as much.

The Angels dfa’d him as well last June then outrighted him to the minors before adding back onto the 40 man roster in last September . The Braves will probably do the same thing with him now (assuming another team doesn’t pick him up) He actually pitched pretty good for the Braves in the 3 games he was in. In fact Suarez last 7 Major league outings dating back to when the Angels added him back onto their 40 man roster on September 8th :
7 games 24-1/3 innings 1.15 WHIP 1.85 ERA 24 K’s. Unfortunately his achilles heel has always been the base on balls

Meanwhile EVERY inning Suarez pitched for us was total crap so there was NO EXCUSE for him being on the team for the entire time he was on the roster. Especially when we kept bringing him back on the roster while there were dozens of better lefty options we could have used. I plop this squarely at Arte’s feet and demand he come out and apologize to me for it. I am engorged with righteous fury and incredible baseball wisdom.

Obviously there was no other reason we kept Suarez so long other than we thought he was excellent because we are stupid. Because Arte is evil.

You’ve piqued my interest.

Reggie Jackson career stat line: .262/.356/.490
Reggie Jackson through 8 full seasons: .268/.362/.509 (not including his 35 game debut season) 49 WAR per bbref

Juan Soto career to date (8 seasons): .284/.420/.530 37.2 WAR per bb ref

The slash lines are comparable but Reggie appears to be the vastly superior defender and runner.

I just don’t like when young stars are compared to legends. I experienced (In ST) the aura of a few MLB superstars and when Reggie got to the plate the other team’s heart rate and blood pressure increased.

Just like all that Mickey Mantle comparisons to young Mike Trout. I know that well-known/legend players are there to be compared to, but I say give it 8-9 years before the media sycophants start crowning a new legend.

Yup. Let’s just see what 32 year old Soto is doing. I kind of hope he’s a 3000 hit guy cause there won’t be many of them coming up. Also, nothing other than Red Sox greatness pisses off Yankee fan more than Mets greatness. Plus, if the Mets win big it means the Doyers didn’t and Mets fans know how to have fun at a ball game.

Reggie grades out as an average base runner, though he could steal bases, but before he turned 30, he was a beast in right field. Over his first 8 years, Reggie had 35 total zone runs (defensive component of WAR) as was known for being able to dig a ball out of the right field corner and throw all the way to home plate. Too bad we never got to see that Reggie when he played for the Angels.

Reggie had acumulated substantial counting numbers like 228 SBs, 463 2Bs, 563 HRs, and 1702 RBIs, during a time when run scoring was suppressed and he has a lot of postseason recognition as well with 5WS, and 2x WS MVP while playing for the A’s and the Yankees. Reggie was also a 14 time AS compared to Juan’s 4X so far. Juan has his work cut out for him but he does have a Mickey Mantle OBA which is his greatest strength, and a superior OPS+.
