LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Spring Breakout

Spring Breakout starts today. It’s a four day prospect showcase. The rosters are here. Focusing in on the Angels, Christian Moore will be the headliner. The Angels have 27 players eligible to face off against the Cubs prospects on Saturday.

The Angels got no-hit for about half a game yesterday. Chuckie Robinson singled and drove in Kyren Paris to tie the game late.

Bobby Witt Jr. got hit by a pitch and suffered a forearm contusion. Carlos Estevez has back tightness that has put him behind schedule.

“I have no interest in working with this ownership group,” St. Petersburg mayor Ken Welch said today….

And half the owners in MLB all winced and moaned “Buh mah expansion monies!?!”. So if the Tampa issue can’t be solved until they can force a guy who can’t be forced to sell to sell and then new owners find a real stadium deal and EXPANSION and it’s billion dollars in fees can’t happen till Tampa gets solved what will all these poor owners do?

Better yet. How long will Arte hang on to get that extra pile of money?

Suarez is also still on the team.

The Rays could probably move to a different city quicker than getting a stadium deal done.

In my unasked for opinion, this mess is on MLB when they knew that the Tamp Rays (Then Devil Rays) facility was too small and was made for circuses and concerts.

Who the Hell builds a roof like that on a large building in Florida?

That area of the Gulf for whatever reason typically doesn’t get hit directly with hurricane landfalls. But it sure seems like things would be better if the moved to Tennessee, NC, Portlandia. TB doesn’t appear to be a baseball city.

Hence why I’ve read Orlando would make more sense. Probably would’ve when the franchise was awarded, too. The NBA chose Orlando.

Put a stadium either across the street from the Magic or near a freeway.

MLB is saying they are committed to keeping the team in Tampa, but i bet they’d do some magic and move em to Nashville and then promise Tampa a new owner and new team if they build a stadium….

Orlando looks like a very reasonable option for the Rays.

15th largest media market, ahead of Minneapolis
Only competes with the NBA for sports dollars

I’d imagine the tourist thing could help, too. I went to my first Angels game on a Disneyland trip. I can’t imagine most families who drive to DisneyWorld have an MLB team nearby.

Just move the team up the highway into a location fans can actually access and it will do fine.

Leverage. Harder to extort a group for a couple of billion if that group has the possibility of landing the A’s or Rays through relocation.

Once everybody has a home it will be pay through the teeth or don’t get a team.

….until they can force a guy who can’t be forced to sell to sell…

Source? because I believe they could force Sternberg to sell if enough owners ( 2/3? 3/4? something like that in their charter) voted for it. At the very least the Owners could take away his annual revenue sharing money since the Rays dont spend jack shit on players. And Im pretty damn sure they would have to approve any moves to other cities

Lets see whether Manfraud and the bloated fat cats really give a shit about improving the ownership situation on Tampa or if this is just hot air Bloviations.

This is the lineup I would like to see opening day with regnifo and Neto probably out

Anderson 2b
Ward. LF
Trout. RF
Soler. DH
O’Hoppe. C
Schanuel. 1b
Adell. CF
Moore. 3b
Paris. SS

Probably not going to happen but with wash and his coaching staff better coaching for youngsters then in minors

Plus Moore has played exactly ZERO innings in spring training or the minors so I doubt you see that until many innings of adjustments in the minors. If he makes the team out of spring he will play second base virtually everyday

I’m usually pretty even keel about spring training. Guys are working on things, results don’t ultimately matter, matchups don’t matter etc…

But yesterday might have been the worst game of the spring

The offense was absolutely horrendous. 1 hit from the starters. Horrible at bats. No plans at the plate. zero threats

Pitching overall was fine (Soriano struggled with command again) but that leads to something else that bothered me from a managerial perspective:

Why did Soriano and Joyce even pitch yesterday? Soriano is slated to probably pitch game 2 of the season against the White Sox in two weeks, and Joyce is most likely the 8th inning guy. Why even allow the white sox starters the chance to see those guys? Seems like a blunder

It is way too far out to let match ups dictate work schedules. Soriano and Joyce needed to get some work in yesterday and with it being Spring, there is no guarantee the guys they faced yesterday will be the same guys they face in two weeks.

Besides, the pitching game plans in games that count vs. those in Spring Training are substantially different.

??? Not really. And the season is two weeks away, not two days. Plus, video exists. Plus half the guys they pitched to won’t be on the sox roster. Plus the pitchers in question will be throwing different (we hope). Why ice skate uphill on this stuff?

cookmeister

pretty much every guy in that lineup yesterday for the white sox yesterday minus Meidroth is going to be on their opening day roster

the angels (and a lot of MLB teams) used to not throw their starting pitchers in spring against division opponents fairly often when they played them 19 times a year.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  cookmeister

So you’re saying that for the last half of ST teams didn’t throw roster arms at division opponents (all of whom are in the Cactus League) and also avoided teams they’d play early in the season? Or when, as the last half of ST comes along and 2/3 of the ABs are roster guys, they didn’t throw their roster arms? They all just pitched B games?

That must have been in the 70s cause I missed that shit.

cookmeister

when the Angels played the Mariners, A’s, Rangers later in spring, they wouldn’t throw a start ALL the time. You really must have missed it.

and again, almost every one of those guys in the lineup for the white sox yesterday will be in the lineup opening day

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  cookmeister

What I’m really saying is that it doesn’t matter, even if those guys are all in the starting line up for the Sox for the next five years and you’re either thinking of the last week of ST or you’re trying too hard to be right. Because what you’re bitching about really doesn’t matter.

Keith Law believes in Jo

“… his overall trend of making more contact, making more hard contact, swinging less and swinging-and-missing less will continue“

Jo Adell, OF, Los Angeles Angels

If Adell breaks out this year, or ever, it’ll be one of the great prospect comeback stories of the last decade, as it looked like the Angels had completely messed him up by rushing him to the majors in 2020. He played regularly for the first time in 2024 and had his best season by any measure, getting up to 0.9 WAR and cutting his strikeout rate to a manageable (if high) 27.9 percent with a 90 wRC+ that was his best in any season, even the partial ones. He even played solid-average defense.

His 2024 might have been his breakout season if he’d just held serve against fastballs; he didn’t hit them as hard last year as he had in limited time in 2022-23, even though he whiffed on them less. I’m assuming that’s just noise, and he’ll see improvement there that more than makes up for any lost ground against offspeed stuff, and that his overall trend of making more contact, making more hard contact, swinging less and swinging-and-missing less will continue.

Logan O’Hoppe, C, Los Angeles Angels

He already broke out last year with a 2.7 bWAR season and 20 homers in his first truly full season in the majors. He did wear down in the second half, though, going from .276/.328/.472 at the All-Star break to .196/.266/.312 after it. I expect him to hold his production better this year, between just having the physical and mental experience of playing a full season before and the presence of Travis d’Arnaud as a backup who can give O’Hoppe more days off from catching.

I completely agree on O’Hoppe. You just never know with Adel. He is a very hard worker though so it is possible and would be a giant win for the future.

I don’t think he’ll ever be mistaken for Juan Soto, but you’re right. adell has never stopped working on his entire game. Plus he is VERY talented. You can see a big difference in his approach and confidence from say 2022 to 2024 and if that continues there’s no reason not to expect an .800+ OPS even if he strikes out a lot and only hits .235 or something. He could actually end up a 30/30 guy without much extra help.

On top of that I just like him. He seems really cool, and he’d be the ultimate example of overcoming the mountain of Angels Fan Shit Ju Ju.

Like a 15 year old white girl in most movies these days, he could be the key to it all.

PedroCerrano

With Adel it’s hard to know what he would look like now if hadn’t been rushed up. With all of his talent, it’s fairly likely that he had never truly failed and failure at the highest level can leave you guessing. I don’t think most folks understand just how great of a player the worst MLB bench guy is. I thought that he had way to many holes in his game to overcome, especially on defense but he has made huge strides. I’d guess that he’s a hard working, high character guy with a solid shot at this point.

Law has the same issue I have. Jo just LOOKS like he could explode at any moment and basically be Jorge Soler with a solid glove at any time. He has serious power and bat speed and “all” he has to do is make regular contact. That’s all. I’m really rooting for him. If the PTP era changes to the Angels eventually result in a good Jo it’s a big win for our roster construction.

I really think the swinging and missing less comes from the revamped swing.

I heard a great interview with Chipper Jones and he basically said that the less a guy’s head moves the better of a look he gets and the more selective he can be. The other swing mechanics are far less important than the amount of head movement.

That really resonated with me and I’ve been watching great contact hitters and he’s correct. Notice how Gywnn’s head didn’t move until after he started his swing.

Yah. I’ve heard that this is why “selling out for power” has such an effect on BA. Remember when it seemed like Trout might win batting titles? As soon as you jerk your head a little to start your swing and get a little more load up ahead of your swing it likely effects a lot of hitters.

It’s likely a result of guys the size of Rengifo trying to hit 20 HR a year to stay relevant when they really have the body and forearms of a guy who hits 10 HR a year. Like pitchers go for max velo, hitter go for max pop and lift with the slight head bobble involved.

I’d still take a line up with a .290 BA/.350 OBP and an average of 15 HR over what everyone is trying now. Throw in an average of 10 SB per season for that line up…. ummmm good.

I can remember one of the few hitting lessons I received as a yute….guy watched my take about 10 swings in the cage, told my to drop the bat, swing at the pitches, as he held my head firmly with his hands, me swinging without a bat…..told me the biggest key was keeping my head still.

Soon after that he told me give up the dream and go back to basketball….and he told me I sucked, and he’d seen better swings on a gate.

Sure, it can stunt their growth. But unlikely that’s what happened to Adell… and the idea the Angels screwed him up by giving him a few ABs in 2020 is one of the enduring fables of CtPG. Yes, he played in 38 games in 2020 as a 21-year-old, in his fourth year of pro ball, which is a fairly typical track for high-performing prospects drafted out of high school. The alternative was to have him see no competitive pitching in 2020, since the minors were mothballed. That would have helped his development? I don’t think so. Granted, he sucked in 2020, but he came back to post a .700-plus OPS in 2021 in 140 ABs, which remains his high water mark in the Majors. He simply regressed and fell into some bad habits. It happens to some players, irrespective of coaching. I can’t say it’s impossible those 124 ABs in 2020 ruined him for three years, but it feels like science fiction.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Nope. Any prospect that comes out of our system and fails is Arte’s fault.
Mike Clevinger sucks now? Delayed Arte.
Clevinger was good. Got away from Arte.
Hell, I’m pretty sure prospects on other teams that flop are Arte’s fault even if they never came here. Like Marte in Cincinnati, or Dillon Tate.
