LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Joyce-less

Morning Angels fans. Have some links.

Angels News

Angels lost yesterday. They are 3 wins away from avoiding 100 losses. Angels never lost 100 games before. Ever.

With that loss, the Angels are officially eliminated. It is official, the Angels won’t go to the playoffs yet again. Haven’t been since 2014.

Ben Joyce is on the IL now. Hurt his shoulder throwing so hard.

Oh and Rendon is hurt too. But that is a given at this point. He won’t play more games this year than he did in 2021 after all. Unless he heals fast enough for the last 5 games of the year.

Around Baseball

Schwarber has the new MLB record of most leadoff HR with 14. And who said that power hitters were bad leadoff hitters?

Marlins will get a new City Connect jersey next year. Which makes 9/21/24 the last time you will see these.

Yoshi is back for the Dodgers. Right before the playoffs.

Meanwhile ReyLo is hurt. Right before the playoffs.

White Sox so bad that the Celtics had more wins than them since March. Watch as the Angels lose to them 4 times.

Manny Machado is now the Padre all time HR leader. Yes, really. 164 HR is embarrassingly low. 8 Angels have more than that, for comparison.

Seven more loses. The White Sox can totally DO IT! Man I wish we could get 100 losses so we could truly be as bad as we act like we are….

We could get tattoos and shit…..

Change the name of the team?

so looking at the teams that lost 100 games….

the last time Brooklyn did it, in about 1905, they changed the name from Superbas to Dodgers the very next year. and the Dodgers never lost 100 games.

The last time NYY did it, in about 1911, they changed the name from Highlanders to Yankees the very next year. And the Yankees have never lost 100 games either.

Now i don’t think we’ll lose 100 games this year, but got me thinking – maybe we change the name of the team to change the fortune.

Los Angeles Gorillas (of Anaheim)

nah – just start getting navy blue back to the unis.

The name is the only thing keeping me around. It just needs to be the California Angels and I completely agree that the Navy blue must return.

Unlikely MLB would allow it to happen. As there are (for now) five teams in California, including another American League team (vs none in 1966), why should the Angels be the single team to represent the entire state? Bringing back the proper blue (not the Disney blue) would be nice.

Wagaman wearing #34…is nothing sacred?

other people have worn the number since

What happened to him is tragic, but it’s not really a sole reason to retire a number or prevent people from wearing it.

Zach Plesac wore #34 this year – they kept it off the roster for over 10 years until Thor in 2022. Wagaman will be the third one.

This day still gets to me. 23 years later and I both want to cry and feel my blood boil.

I pray we never have another day like we did on September 11th 2001 again.

Me too. I spent that day in a hotel bar watching the news and talking through the state of our world with a close friend. His business trip got cancelled as all travel did so we invited him to stay at our house. Shortly after we arrived home my brother called to tell me that our mom had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I’m a pretty high capacity guy but that was my limit.

He’s a former MLB player so we spent that evening in schoolyard behind our house throwing each other BP. Nothing made sense that day but I knew that I knew how to hit a baseball.

We’ll always remember where we were. I was working for a grocery store and it happened to draw the super early shift for the milk delivery. Normally I would have been asleep.

The delivery driver told me a bomb went off in the Pentagon and we found a tiny black and white TV and watched the second plane hit live. Me, my manager also named Jeff, and this random guy.

Sacramento was a ghost town that day. Remember, 2 of the highjacked planes were bound for SF. I remember walking around downtown and seeing fighter jets but no people.

Forgot about that. I was working across the river from downtown Portland and F15s were flying aircap over the downtown highrise buildings for several days.

I was at home when I saw the second plane hit, just as I was putting on my shoes. On the drive to work, passing Ontario Airport, I couldn’t help but wonder if a plane would fall from the sky. Then, Bill Handel came on the radio and said the tower had collapsed—it was gone. I spent the day with my math students, listening to the radio and talking about what might happen next. I remember telling them that there would probably be war with at least one country, maybe two. On the way home, it struck me how eerie it was to see no planes landing at all.

The Angels have no third base prospects and Rendon’s contract is not going away. I fully expect Anthony to be back with the MLB club in Tempe.

Ideally we sign another third base capable player, use Rengifo to start the year at second base, and end up with Moore at second and prospects for Rengifo.

Yoan Moncada is the guy I’d sign. There’s a piece of my Perry formula in advance.

Roy Hobbs

It’s not about prospects, his contract, or lost money. The money is already gone and Rendon provides negative value. Keeping him will not help the club move forward and he is not about our future. I agree that what you said is probably what they will do but all it does is waste time. I don’t like Rengifo at 2B but I do like him at 3B. Whether Moore comes up or not next year, I don’t think he’ll be close to ready. So more minor league ball at the the major league level. There is also no guarantee Moore can actually stick at 2B. Let’s find solutions at 2B and 3B going forward for now and if we have players in the minor leagues that are ready then we will have a nice problem to have. Waiting and hoping is a bad plan. We need to start adding pieces 1 at a time, otherwise it may be 10 years or never before the team is capable of competing.

It took Dipoto and Eppler little to no time to find new gigs.

Being an Angels GM is great for future prospects. You can take credit for any gains while blaming Arte for all failures. And you get that all important experience on your resume.

We are pretty much locked into the #3 spot in the draft odds. We would have to absolutely tear it up and Washington to stink to drop to #4. In the same token, we would have to really stink and the Rockies would have to be amazing to crack #2.

Hopefully the ping pong balls bounce our way.

Humorous. BTW why do fans care if Rendon plays in the minor league style games the rest of this season? Joyce almost certainly won’t. Trout won’t. Nor Adell, Rengifo, etc. This time of year is really to see what non-established players can look decent to maybe have a chance next year. Let the kids play and see if the others are healthy next year.

Thanks. Perspective is the key.

Back in the aughts wins and losses mattered. Every game was one step closer or further from an AL West title and post season berth.

This year is all about development. Really, only the results of a few players mattered. So I concentrate on how the future looks more than the present.

Pipeline says we have the fourth-best crop of pitching prospects in baseball. I’m not sure if that speaks more to the org or to the iffy state of MLB pitching? https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/top-organizations-based-on-pitching-talent-2024?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

I think this is a big deal

Dana
Aldegheri
Klassen

But TGA is coming and I’d expect Dakota and maybe Barret Kent to improve to prospect status.

I’m interested in the kids on the DSL team. There might be 6-7 pitching prospects in the pipeline next year not including Urena, Erla, Kerry etc.

I’ll give it to Perry. But he has to start cutting the chord on guys like Sandoval and Canning.

I do wonder if he’ll start using a few prospects to land some offense. They have no offense prospects although I’m interested in Randy De Jesús and Rio Foster. I wonder if they’ll end up at AA next year. I’m starting to lose faith on Rada… he’s just so undersized I’m not sure that he becomes strong enough to be consistent on offense.

Need guys like SandyCann so that you can roll out prospects, let em take a beating, but have someone to eat innings a couple times a week.

I’m definitely going to recycle this for Weekend Links.

Dana and Klassen are legit prospects.

Bachman is healthy, TGA and Kerry have good stuff.

Add in Detmers and Silseth and there’s enough to dream on a decent rotation and bullpen mix.

Hopefully Joyce is just an abundance-of-caution thing… or even better just a save-him-for-next-year thing. Threw 53 innings between RC and Anaheim this year… not exactly Seaver-esque, but a career-high including college.

DMAGZ13

I was not sold on Joyce at first because he never pitched on back to back nights in college. I’ve always worried about his load. He’s pitched a lot more than I thought he could. I just think he needs to shut it down until next year. Save it for next season. Hopefully he can make the early saves that Estevez blew this season.

I kind of doubt he’ll be a constant closer. I think the pen should go 90 Reds style and have three leverage arms that can close if needed. Can also rest one if needed. We kind of have the mix of prospects and Quesadilla types to maybe see that develop. Some crazy years where Torres, Joyce and Quijada all have over 15 saves…. or something.

Strikeouts are still a little too high and these are really small sample sizes but the big palooka may just make it as a viable MLB LH power bat for years to come .

Rendone nor Canning should return next season.

Rendone –
2021 (58 games): .240 / .329 / .382 / 6 HR
2022 (47 games): .229 / .326 / .380 / 5 HR
2023 (43 games): .236 / .361 / .318 / 2 HR
2024 (57 games): .218 / .307 / .267 / 0 HR 😂

It’s comical how bad this fucking (Sept) guy is. He is an embarrassment. DFA DFA DFA !

Griffin Canning has the third-worst ERA (5.35) among 60 qualified starters and the worst FIP (5.26).

Canning is the only qualified starter with a FIP over 5.

When your team sucks as bad as the Angels do you need distractions. I like to guess at just what guys talk about.

I imagine it went down like this:

Washington to mound: “Griff…gonna need you to wear it today”

Washington to coaches after his return to the dugout: “I told that f**ing AAAA scrubb he needs to suck up some innings.Last thing we need is for any of our real prospects to get hurt…Damn Perry went and released Guillorme, now that guy knows how to pitch when you’re getting boat raced! “.

For what?

I think leaving Canning in plus pinch hitting for Ward, Neto, and Schanuel in succession was some sort of meltdown for Wash. it wasn’t just not chasing wins, it was chasing a loss.

Consider: down 10-4 but two on, no out. I can imagine a scenario where Ward walks, Neto doubles, Schanuel singles and it’s 10-8. Instead we had 3 scrub pinch hitters who all struck out.

It’ll go hardly noticed in this losing season but it was weird. I believe in trying to win. If Wash wants to see what Wagaman can do, start him
