LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Freeway Series

Morning Angels fans, not much time left for the season. Have some links.

Angels News

Well, it was finally time. Ohtani back at the Big A. As a Dodger. The Angels did show appreciation on the board and such, even though they said they won’t.

I miss him

There was also a video. More of a slideshow really.

Anyway the Angels lost the game. In extras. Bummer.

Around Baseball

The White Sox are so bad that even the jokes are going stale. The Angels might have double the wins of the White Sox by the end of the year. THAT is nuts.

Speaking of them, they DFA-ed former Angel Touki Toussaint. To be THAT bad that you can’t make it as a White Sox means your career is over.

Verlander and Scherzer are not healthy and Father Time reins supreme. For once, this is the opposite of a LOLZ Mets.

MLB may sue Diamond Sports for not being able to pay teams for broadcast rights. Bankrupt them!

How does catch probability work anyway? Here is a breakdown.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

Brett Kerry just gave up his 2nd hit of the game in the 7th. Rocket City up, 6-1

Kudos to anyone brave enough to go to this game. High probability of a double shit sandwich. The canning experience and hoards of doyer fans salivating all over themselves. Yikes!

I truly do not understand why Drury is playing everyday at this point. He’s likely not on the roster next year. It really seems like we should see if Stefanic might be worthy of a roster spot next year while the team waits on Moore or trades Rengifo.

Kavadas DH again tonight. I would much prefer a slumping Pillar

Last night was a rough night for Angels employees dealing with abusive Dodger fans. Alcohol sales will be cut short again and the police presence will be quite heavy, more than even a normal Dodgers visit

I was shocked by that, and so was management when they had the scoreboard go blank for a minute before they changed it back 😭

Tonight Mookie goes deep against Cann’ting……..$2,000,000 Ippei Bucks on MookieBetts please.

We need to get one of those 129lbs roid’ed multi positional players for next year, that can hit 35 bombs for us.

can’t say for sure, but looks like Detmers “fixed” his pausing issue that he had when he lifted his front leg. Causes the weight to move forward without letting the arm catch up.

Also looked like he was sacrificing some velo for better command, which is great to see as well!

velo was actually really solid last night. Consistently sat 93-94

it was good, but it’s down from the 96-97 he was throwing earlier in the season. I wish the slider was a little slower to have some differential but, I’ll take the results

Fingers crossed he won’t relapse. Still think a lot of his “thing” is between the ears.

Would be huge if we could count on Detmers to replicate last nights performance on a consistent basis next year.

Heavy lean that most of the money and effort for 2025 needs to be spent on increasing our run production. Get some run producers.

Support this improving pitching staff with more RUNS. Give them a night off few times a week, score some runs late, increase the 2 run lead to 4 every F’ing once in a while, make life easier for the Arms.

yup. Hard to be a pitcher knowing you have to be almost perfect or you’re on the hook for an L

Yah. He looked good. Surgical. Not trying to throw 99 MPH.

Well it looks like the fanfare is coming to an end for Schanuel. In his last 25 games and 108 plate appearances hes batting .204/.306/.290 with 1 HR. The Angels can get any number of schmoes to do that at first base for the team next year. With Niko at DH they make a formidable duo.

Granted Nolan’s .247 BABIP is probably somewhat unlucky but if you dont hit the ball very hard they’re going to catch it.

I had the Dodger feed on because that’s the one that auto-recorded for some reason. Eric Karros made a comment roughly along the lines of “yeah but those don’t count” when Buehler struck out Adell and Niko in the second inning. Dick move by Karros to publicly slight anyone who is good enough to even play in the bigs.

BTW: Karros career WAR 10.7, Chone Figgins WAR 22.0 despite playing in 500 games less in his career.

Karros has always hated the Angels.
He’s a low grade, grass fed and finished dick.
But his quafted hair is beautiful. He’s a Dapper Dan man.

Baseball is a long season with ups and downs … just look at the difference for Adell between 1st half and 2nd half. I would not give up on Schanuel based upon a slump. Slumps happen.

To everyone.

The key is how he pulls out of it. The guy has shown he can be a decent hitter. Whether or not he can be a top of the order guy over a full season is a different question.

Our commentary during the game last night were about what a weak ass, anemic swing he has. Shades of Reggie Willits in a much bigger frame.

Jeebus Christina you fking hens cluck the stupidest shit when you get together and start furrowing your brows.

He’ll probably finish with 15 HR and 20 2B…. far from “power” but also far from Reggie Willits. He’s also in his first full season of ANY pro ball.

The bingo ladies in the game threads need to chill.

Again, he’s in a slump. Everybody’s swing looks bad when they’re slumping.

You mean Hes in ANOTHER Slump. Nolan’s had over 525 Plate Appearances in 2024. Hes only have one prolonged stretch from Early June to late July where his OPS has been over .600. I guess the other 350 Plate Appearances this year have just been one big giant slump.

Gotcha.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Actually, his .OPS is over 700 for that entire 525 plate appearances….

He hits. They adjust. He hits. They adjust. He hits. They adjust. You know, like how baseball works.

But he’s doing it in the MLB. I actually have hope cause he always eventually adjusts thus far and he hits the shit out of the ball once he does. His swing doesn’t get all screwy and then he tries a leg kick and then blah blah blah. He adjusts in simple ways. I think, if we’re lucky, we’ll see the chunks of good hitting get longer and longer as he sees more and more MLB pitching.

He’ll get his OPS up into the mid to high .700s and be average for a 1B next year most likely. Jake Cronenworth, Yandy Diaz territory. I actually like how he doesn’t sell out for power. His swing is really controlled. He’ll get a little stronger and I think his contact will get a little more confident/powerful. By year 4 of Shamwow it wouldn’t shock me to see him with a really high OBP and 20+ home runs. I’m talking actual .300/.400/.450/.850 type guy.

…. or Angels Fan JuJu will get him and he’ll catch Dengue Fever in California and die.

A great comeback game by Detmers. That’s why this kid is so confounding – needed 3 months to figure out what’s wrong with him in AAA, then blanks the powerful Doyers lineup with 2 runs and 10Ks. The talent is there, clearly, no question. Just need to learn to be more of a pitcher.

I’ll be glad when this whole spectacle is over. Wayne salivating over that guy when the Angels IBB’ed him in the 10th was all kinds of 🤮🤮🤮. Sure, he got a 3B, but he also got both a K looking and a K swinging. Sweet.

And Walker Buehler, enjoy being in Detroit or White Sox next year. Thanks also for saying you guys try to buy championships as much as you can, and so far you only have your 2020 joke WS to show for.

Bill Plunkett
@billplunkettocr

#Dodgers Walker Buehler throws shade at Anaheim then does financial breakdown on intentional walk: “I think there were a little more people and more enthusiasm than typical down here. … But Shohei playing for us now, I think is really cool. …” 1/2

“Yeah it’s a tough situation to walk a guy that got 700 (million dollars) to get to the guy that got 350. He’s pretty good at baseball, too.” 2/2

I really wonder if Detmers was tipping pitches. You don’t normally see this much disparity so quickly going both ways.

Just his curve ball. It’s why he stopped throwing it is my guess. Right when the announcers mentioned it, he threw one to freeman and he was all over it and upset with himself he didn’t smash a HR.

Newcomb had talent too. Until it’s displayed consistently over multiple seasons, it remains “potential”.

Just sayin’.

Epic 9 innings last night. A shame it was ruined by the abominable ghost runner.

My Dodger fan buddy who I attended the game with about Ben Joyce, “Who’s that?!? He’s my new favorite pitcher.”

Detmers was phenomenal, Ben Joyce brought the house down once again. Fun stuff.

Detmers looked good against a solid lineup and pitched well enough to win. 5 hits by his teammates did him in.

The fans got their Ohtani closure with the video slide presentation in the first inning. Hazzah. Ohtani got his closure a few years earlier when after seeing what losing did to Mike Trout, decided that playing for team that could actually win a championship was most important.

I love Ben Joyce – he was a great draft choice by Perry. However the human arm was not constructed to throw 105+ MPH. Is Ben Joyce not human; destined to spend quality time with arm and shoulder medical professionals; or both?

A show of hands: who wants to see Roansie in an Angels uniform next season?

You can be Roansie Whiny all you want but in his previous 16 games before last night he posted a 1.59 ERA 0.87 WHIP and a .541 OPS against. So Contreras to your Desireras, he aint going anywhere, SG

Agreed. Not bad for a dumpster dive but the Angels will need to come up with better high leverage options for 2025 if they want to even consider competing ( or .500 for that matter)

Bingo. If he’s an option for high leverage situations, it’s clear Perry and his Minions are not serious about competing.
